This week on Pagecast Michele Magwood is in conversation with John Stewart about his book, the first complete and comprehensive biography of Sir Herbert Baker. More about the book: Architect Sir Herbert Baker left an indelible mark on South Africa and much of the British Empire in the first half of the 20th century. This is the first full biography from childhood and was written with full cooperation from his family and with access to his archive and private papers. After a Victorian architectural apprenticeship in London, Sir Herbert Baker went on to become the most prolific architect of his age in South Africa, where he designed numerous public buildings, churches, schools and private houses, including the Union Buildings, St George's Cathedral and Groote Schuur. Thereafter, he worked in India, Kenya and England where, among many other projects, he designed South Africa House. He was an intimate friend of many fascinating men of his age, including Cecil Rhodes, T. E. Lawrence, John Buchan and Jan Smuts. Lavishly illustrated, this biography offers a compelling picture of an architect whose buildings contribute greatly to South Africa's rich history. More about John and Michele: John Stewart is an award-winning architect, architectural historian and author who, prior to his retirement, was the leader of one of the UK's largest multi-disciplinary architectural practices. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Society of Arts and was twice selected as one of the best 40 Architects under Forty in the UK. He has been writing and lecturing full-time since 2015 and has written six books. John was educated at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, the Oxford School of Architecture and Henley Management College and lives in Buckinghamshire outside London. Michele Magwood is an award-winning journalist and the former Books Editor of the Sunday Times. She has worked in television and broadcasting, and now edits and writes. #SirHerbertBaker #JohnSteward #SouthAfricanHistory #ArchitecturalHeritage #CapeDutchArchitecture #HistoricalBuildings #SouthAfricanPodcast #HistoryLovers #HeritageConservation #ColonialArchitecture #ArchitectsOfHistory #JohannesburgHistory #CapeTownArchitecture #UnionBuildings #SouthAfricanCulture #SouthAfricanPodcast

The architect Takero Shimazaki was born in Tokyo but is a longtime Londoner. He has designed many kinds of buildings – including the London home of the Royal Academy of Dance. It's a warm, open, lovingly designed space and last year, the Royal Institute of British Architects gave it both an RIBA National Award and RIBA London Award, calling it “an uplifting, welcoming and inclusively safe place.” So how do you take a heritage organisation like the RAD and build it a 21st century home? An architect can shape the way bodies move through space, just like a choreographer – so we ask Takero why dance matters to him.Takero Shimazaki is an architect and a director of Takero Shimazaki Architects, t-sa. He studied at University of Wales, Cardiff and The Bartlett, UCL. He has worked for Richard Rogers Partnership, Itsuko Hasegawa and Alison and Peter Smithson, and is a lecturer in Architecture at the School of Art, Architecture and Design at London Metropolitan University.LINKShttps://www.t-sa.co.uk/https://www.ribaj.com/buildings/riba-awards-2024-london-south-west-royal-academy-of-dance-takero-shimazaki-architects-education-wandsworthhttps://www.royalacademyofdance.org/ Hosted on Acast. Welcome to the Institute of Black Imagination podcast, beaming in conversations from the galaxy of Black genius. I'm your host, Dario. Today we're honored to introduce our guest, Professor Lesley Lokko. A distinguished Ghanaian-Scottish architect, educator, and bestselling novelist, Dr. Lokko most recently served as the Curator of the 18th Venice Biennale of Architecture, becoming the first Black-identified person to hold the position. Having a knock-out creative career five decades long is one thing. Setting up a charity to inspire the same creativity in the next generations is another. But the iconic British design duo, who are also husband and wife - Sir John Sorrell CBE and Lady Frances Sorrell CBE - have done just that. Frances and John started their lives in design both aged of 14 when, in different parts of London, they attended free Saturday morning classes at their local colleges of art and design. Neither were from well-off families. John had never been to an art gallery and most of his peers were dropping out of school aged 15 to get jobs. The experience was a revelation that paved the way for full-time study and their careers in design. It was also the prime motivation for the formation of the Sorrell Foundation in 1999 with the aim of inspiring creativity in young people to change their lives and make the world a better place. After meeting through work, the Sorrell's launched their now legendary design studio, Newell and Sorrell, in 1976. They've redesigned some of the UKs most high-profile organisations, including British Airways, The BBC and the Royal Mail. After 25 years in business, they sold to Omnicom, and have spent the past 25 working to give young people pathways to higher education in the creative industries. Their achievements and accolades are too long to list. John is co-founder and chairman of London Design Festival and co-founder of London Design Biennale and is a UK Business Ambassador, appointed by successive prime ministers to help promote Britain's creative industries abroad. John was appointed CBE in 1996, was awarded the Royal Society of Arts Bicentenary Medal in 1998 and holds numerous honorary fellowships and degrees. John was awarded a knighthood in the 2008 New Year Honours List for services to the creative industries. Frances is a tour de force in her own right. She is Chancellor of the University of Westminster, London, has Honorary Fellowships from the Royal Institute of British Architects, Falmouth University, Hereford College of Arts and Plymouth College of Art. She holds Honorary Doctorates from the Open University, Coventry University and University for the Creative Arts, and has been a visiting Professor at University of the Arts London. As Creative Director at Newell and Sorrell she won over a hundred awards for creativity and effectiveness. Listen in as Vince, Sir John and Lady Frances Sorrell discuss; cold calling BP fresh out of art school and designing their exhibition stand at the Paris Air Show six weeks later, growing up on the same working-class council estate as Rod Stewart, and why you have to put your money where your mouth is if you really believe in something. TALK ART EXCLUSIVE! We meet Sir Antony Gormley OBE RA to discuss his forthcoming solo show 'Aerial' at White Cube New York, USA and his epic new 'Time Horizon' public installation of 100 sculptures which has just opened at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, UK. We explore his entire career across this intimate, highly detailed, feature-length special episode recorded in person at his London studio.Antony Gormley is widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. Gormley's work is concerned with the experience of being in the world and an expression of how it feels to be alive. Through a critical engagement with his own physical existence, Gormley identifies art as a place where new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise. For him, art can be a place of becoming where, collectively, we can think about our role as creators of the future: ‘I want it to be about life. I want it to be about potential.'We explore his new works made for ‘Aerial', an exhibition by Antony Gormley in New York, in which the artist considers sculpture as an instrument for proprioception – the body's innate capacity to sense and perceive its position, movements and orientation in relation to itself and the environment. The exhibition features two recent developments in Gormley's practice: one explores physical proximity in mass and scale, where two over-life-size bodies merge as one, while the other endeavours to catalyse space almost without mass.Whilst 'Time Horizon', one of Antony Gormley's most spectacular large-scale installations, is currently being shown across the grounds and through the house at Houghton Hall in Norfolk. Featuring 100 life-size sculptures, the works are distributed across 300 acres of the park, the furthest away being approximately 1.5 miles on the West Avenue. The cast-iron sculptures, each weighing 620kg and standing at an average of 191cm, are installed at the same datum level to create a single horizontal plane across the landscape. Some works are buried, allowing only a part of the head to be visible, while others are buried to the chest or knees according to the topography. Only occasionally do they stand on the existing surface. Around a quarter of the works are placed on concrete columns that vary from a few centimetres high to rising four meters off the ground.Gormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, an Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity and Jesus Colleges, Cambridge. O arquiteto britânico é membro do Royal Institute of British Architects e membro honorário tanto do American Institute of Architects quanto do Bund Deutscher Architekten.

Summary: In this episode, our host Adrian Ellis speaks with Vincent Chang, Deputy Chairman and Partner at Grimshaw Architects. Together, they explore the distinctive contribution of architecture. Having been with Grimshaw for over 20 years, Vincent also talks about his role managing the practice, and how vital it is for all to share a strong commitment to process – emphasizing the importance of understanding projects more holistically, as well as the butterfly effect that can happen by investing time and capital on initial concepts. Later in the episode, Vincent shares how to create successful future developments by revisiting and observing past projects over multiple periods of time. He recognizes that architects contribute not only to the technical integration of assets but must also prioritize generating an emotional response and one's relationship with a space. Vincent talks about the importance of movement modeling when designing a space, which allow architects to understand intended paths of travel as well as ensure an adequate level of service with relation to people moving throughout an area. He states that spaces should have intuitive movement, while also allowing users to pause and observe their surroundings. Adrian and Vincent conclude the episode by speaking about the architectural legacy of the pandemic. Interior designers are well respected for their creativity, but much less so for their business practices. Most design studios are micro businesses whose owners are often too busy designing to pay sufficient attention to contracts and other key project documents. So, what do designers need to do to tighten up their business practices in order to be seen as true professionals? And where can they turn to for advice? The British Institute of Interior Design in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects has commissioned a new, comprehensive guide to professional practice for interior designers, called ‘The BIID Project Book. The author of this publication, none other than podcast co-host, Susie Rumbold, a Past President of the BIID and Creative Director of London firm, Tessuto Interiors, joins us on the show to explain more about the project and tell us what we can find inside 'The BIID Project Book'.
While architects have had so much influence on how our cities, buildings and social spaces are constructed, their influence has not quite reached the virtual world. This is perhaps why we haven't seen examples in the Metaverse of landmarks, versatile multi purpose spaces, or places that have outlived the specific game, use case or event that it was created for. Lara Lesmes and Fredrik Hellberg of Space Popular are pioneers within the architectural field, having developed curiosity for what virtual reality will emerge to become years before anyone was talking about the Metaverse. They integrate their expertise in traditional architecture with speculative and conceptual work to help people imagine where the future may be headed. Their perspective is unique, especially for the world of consumer tech, and helps create a completely new paradigm for thinking. In the episode, we cover a breadth of fascinating topics from:The architectural point of view, and how it transitions from traditional architecture to how it should be thought about in a limitless virtual realmA vision of the future where architecture will happen at the speed of the the spoken wordWhy portals will become the one of the most common design elements moving forward, the same way cars were in the past eraABOUT THE GUESTSpace Popular is a research driven art, design, and media studio that explores the future of spatial experience through virtual reality, film, exhibitions, speculative writing, as well as buildings and objects. The studio is directed by architects Lara Lesmes and Fredrik Hellberg, both alumni of the Architectural Association in London (2011). The studio has completed buildings, exhibitions, public artworks, furniture collections, and interiors across Asia and Europe, as well as virtual architecture for the immersive internet.Clients, collaborators, and commissioners include national institutions such as MAXXI - National Museum of 21st Century Art, Rome, Italy; The Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design –ArkDes, Stockholm, Sweden; Royal Institute of British Architects, London, UK; National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, South Korea; as well as independent galleries such as MAGAZIN, Vienna, Austria; and Sto Werkstatt, London, UK.Lesmes and Hellberg both have extensive academic experience having taught architectural design studio since 2011, first at INDA, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok from 2021 to 2016, at the Architectural Association in London from 2016 to 2021, and currently at Daniels, Faculty of Architecture, University of Toronto sinde 2020, and UCLA Architecture and Urban Design since 2022. The pandemic has changed the way we work and shop meaning a growing number of offices and retail outlets are empty. So, what do we do with them? Knock them down and start again or find a sustainable way to reuse them? The buzz word is ‘retrofit': redesigning and refurbishing an existing building. Elsie Owusu is an architect and, in this episode of Costing the Earth, she explores this current and contentious issue. It's usually cheaper to build new, so what can be done to encourage developers and architects to change their plans. She visits Selkirk House on Museum Street in London. Developers want to demolish this 1960s concrete tower-block and build something bigger in its place. Campaigners say that a vast amount of CO2 emissions would be saved it the building is retrofitted. Architect, Peter Fisher, takes Elsie to a 1950s, concrete, former print-works which is being refurbished. Just five years ago Peter says the decision would have been made to demolish but, times are changing, and by choosing retrofit CO2 emissions will be reduced by 50%. Smith Mordak takes a wider view of the debate, arguing that a cultural shift is needed across architecture and the associated disciplines. The automatic response to a design challenge of building new, or even building at all, should be rejected; there are more creative and greener ways of thinking to explore first. In the Grimshaw Podcast Cities series we have interviewed city-shapers of all kind: architects and urban designers, transport specialists, cultural entrepreneurs, developers, and city leaders. Our series ends the year with that cornerstone of urban development – masterplanning. And who better to discuss this with than Selina Mason? Selina is a masterplanner and architect with extensive experience of delivering complex urban masterplans. She is responsible for driving high quality design and masterplanning across the UK and Europe in the urban regeneration portfolio of major international developer Lendlease, amounting to £30bn end value. Selina is a recognised leader in urban spatial planning and design leadership. She is a UK Design Council Ambassador and has recently been appointed by the Government to the Urban Centre Recovery Task Force. She is the Chair of the Quality Review Panel of Havering Council, a fast growing part of the Thames Gateway on the east side of London, and is a member of several other Design Review panels. She also represents the Royal Institute of British Architects on the Highways England's Strategic Design Panel where she champions investment in better quality infrastructure. Before joining Lendlease in 2017, Selina led a range of city-shaping regeneration masterplans including the new UCL campus at Stratford, a prime legacy of the 2012 Olympics in the area. Until 2014 she was indeed responsible for the delivery of the London 2012 Masterplan and the design and delivery of the post-Games Transformation Masterplan for the Olympic Delivery Authority and subsequently the London Legacy Development Corporation. And before all this, she was Director of Architecture and Design Review at the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) until 2007: CABE's work and approach has been hugely influential internationally. Selina is currently leading on one of the most important urban regeneration projects in Europe, the 50-50 joint venture with London's oldest housing charity Peabody to deliver more than 11,000 homes in Thamesmead in south-east London. With this last podcast of 2021, we encourage you to join us in 2022 for the next podcast series: The Culture Series.
