This week on Pagecast Michele Magwood is in conversation with John Stewart about his book, the first complete and comprehensive biography of Sir Herbert Baker. More about the book: Architect Sir Herbert Baker left an indelible mark on South Africa and much of the British Empire in the first half of the 20th century. This is the first full biography from childhood and was written with full cooperation from his family and with access to his archive and private papers. After a Victorian architectural apprenticeship in London, Sir Herbert Baker went on to become the most prolific architect of his age in South Africa, where he designed numerous public buildings, churches, schools and private houses, including the Union Buildings, St George's Cathedral and Groote Schuur. Thereafter, he worked in India, Kenya and England where, among many other projects, he designed South Africa House. He was an intimate friend of many fascinating men of his age, including Cecil Rhodes, T. E. Lawrence, John Buchan and Jan Smuts. Lavishly illustrated, this biography offers a compelling picture of an architect whose buildings contribute greatly to South Africa's rich history. More about John and Michele: John Stewart is an award-winning architect, architectural historian and author who, prior to his retirement, was the leader of one of the UK's largest multi-disciplinary architectural practices. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Society of Arts and was twice selected as one of the best 40 Architects under Forty in the UK. He has been writing and lecturing full-time since 2015 and has written six books. John was educated at the Mackintosh School of Architecture, the Oxford School of Architecture and Henley Management College and lives in Buckinghamshire outside London. Michele Magwood is an award-winning journalist and the former Books Editor of the Sunday Times. She has worked in television and broadcasting, and now edits and writes. #SirHerbertBaker #JohnSteward #SouthAfricanHistory #ArchitecturalHeritage #CapeDutchArchitecture #HistoricalBuildings #SouthAfricanPodcast #HistoryLovers #HeritageConservation #ColonialArchitecture #ArchitectsOfHistory #JohannesburgHistory #CapeTownArchitecture #UnionBuildings #SouthAfricanCulture #SouthAfricanPodcast

The architect Takero Shimazaki was born in Tokyo but is a longtime Londoner. He has designed many kinds of buildings – including the London home of the Royal Academy of Dance. It's a warm, open, lovingly designed space and last year, the Royal Institute of British Architects gave it both an RIBA National Award and RIBA London Award, calling it “an uplifting, welcoming and inclusively safe place.” So how do you take a heritage organisation like the RAD and build it a 21st century home? An architect can shape the way bodies move through space, just like a choreographer – so we ask Takero why dance matters to him.Takero Shimazaki is an architect and a director of Takero Shimazaki Architects, t-sa. Having a knock-out creative career five decades long is one thing. Setting up a charity to inspire the same creativity in the next generations is another. But the iconic British design duo, who are also husband and wife - Sir John Sorrell CBE and Lady Frances Sorrell CBE - have done just that. Frances and John started their lives in design both aged of 14 when, in different parts of London, they attended free Saturday morning classes at their local colleges of art and design. Neither were from well-off families. John had never been to an art gallery and most of his peers were dropping out of school aged 15 to get jobs. The experience was a revelation that paved the way for full-time study and their careers in design. It was also the prime motivation for the formation of the Sorrell Foundation in 1999 with the aim of inspiring creativity in young people to change their lives and make the world a better place. After meeting through work, the Sorrell's launched their now legendary design studio, Newell and Sorrell, in 1976. They've redesigned some of the UKs most high-profile organisations, including British Airways, The BBC and the Royal Mail. After 25 years in business, they sold to Omnicom, and have spent the past 25 working to give young people pathways to higher education in the creative industries. Their achievements and accolades are too long to list. John is co-founder and chairman of London Design Festival and co-founder of London Design Biennale and is a UK Business Ambassador, appointed by successive prime ministers to help promote Britain's creative industries abroad. John was appointed CBE in 1996, was awarded the Royal Society of Arts Bicentenary Medal in 1998 and holds numerous honorary fellowships and degrees. John was awarded a knighthood in the 2008 New Year Honours List for services to the creative industries. Frances is a tour de force in her own right. She is Chancellor of the University of Westminster, London, has Honorary Fellowships from the Royal Institute of British Architects, Falmouth University, Hereford College of Arts and Plymouth College of Art. She holds Honorary Doctorates from the Open University, Coventry University and University for the Creative Arts, and has been a visiting Professor at University of the Arts London. As Creative Director at Newell and Sorrell she won over a hundred awards for creativity and effectiveness. Listen in as Vince, Sir John and Lady Frances Sorrell discuss; cold calling BP fresh out of art school and designing their exhibition stand at the Paris Air Show six weeks later, growing up on the same working-class council estate as Rod Stewart, and why you have to put your money where your mouth is if you really believe in something. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

TALK ART EXCLUSIVE! We meet Sir Antony Gormley OBE RA to discuss his forthcoming solo show 'Aerial' at White Cube New York, USA and his epic new 'Time Horizon' public installation of 100 sculptures which has just opened at Houghton Hall, Norfolk, UK. We explore his entire career across this intimate, highly detailed, feature-length special episode recorded in person at his London studio.Antony Gormley is widely acclaimed for his sculptures, installations and public artworks that investigate the relationship of the human body to space. Gormley's work is concerned with the experience of being in the world and an expression of how it feels to be alive. Through a critical engagement with his own physical existence, Gormley identifies art as a place where new behaviours, thoughts and feelings can arise. For him, art can be a place of becoming where, collectively, we can think about our role as creators of the future: ‘I want it to be about life. I want it to be about potential.'We explore his new works made for ‘Aerial', an exhibition by Antony Gormley in New York, in which the artist considers sculpture as an instrument for proprioception – the body's innate capacity to sense and perceive its position, movements and orientation in relation to itself and the environment. The exhibition features two recent developments in Gormley's practice: one explores physical proximity in mass and scale, where two over-life-size bodies merge as one, while the other endeavours to catalyse space almost without mass.Whilst 'Time Horizon', one of Antony Gormley's most spectacular large-scale installations, is currently being shown across the grounds and through the house at Houghton Hall in Norfolk. Featuring 100 life-size sculptures, the works are distributed across 300 acres of the park, the furthest away being approximately 1.5 miles on the West Avenue. The cast-iron sculptures, each weighing 620kg and standing at an average of 191cm, are installed at the same datum level to create a single horizontal plane across the landscape. O arquiteto britânico é membro do Royal Institute of British Architects e membro honorário tanto do American Institute of Architects quanto do Bund Deutscher Architekten.

Summary:  In this episode, our host Adrian Ellis speaks with Vincent Chang, Deputy Chairman and Partner at Grimshaw Architects. Together, they explore the distinctive contribution of architecture. Having been with Grimshaw for over 20 years, Vincent also talks about his role managing the practice, and how vital it is for all to share a strong commitment to process – emphasizing the importance of understanding projects more holistically, as well as the butterfly effect that can happen by investing time and capital on initial concepts.  Later in the episode, Vincent shares how to create successful future developments by revisiting and observing past projects over multiple periods of time. He recognizes that architects contribute not only to the technical integration of assets but must also prioritize generating an emotional response and one's relationship with a space. Vincent talks about the importance of movement modeling when designing a space, which allow architects to understand intended paths of travel as well as ensure an adequate level of service with relation to people moving throughout an area. He states that spaces should have intuitive movement, while also allowing users to pause and observe their surroundings. Adrian and Vincent conclude the episode by speaking about the architectural legacy of the pandemic.  References: Penn Station Expansion – A commuter-first plan to transform Penn Station into a first-class transit hub that better serves passengers with more space, new retail and amenities, and improved accessibility options. ASCOLTA L'INTERVISTA! Interior designers are well respected for their creativity, but much less so for their business practices. Most design studios are micro businesses whose owners are often too busy designing to pay sufficient attention to contracts and other key project documents. So, what do designers need to do to tighten up their business practices in order to be seen as true professionals? And where can they turn to for advice? The British Institute of Interior Design in partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects has commissioned a new, comprehensive guide to professional practice for interior designers, called ‘The BIID Project Book. While architects have had so much influence on how our cities, buildings and social spaces are constructed, their influence has not quite reached the virtual world. This is perhaps why we haven't seen examples in the Metaverse of landmarks, versatile multi purpose spaces, or places that have outlived the specific game, use case or event that it was created for. Lara Lesmes and Fredrik Hellberg of Space Popular are pioneers within the architectural field, having developed curiosity for what virtual reality will emerge to become years before anyone was talking about the Metaverse. They integrate their expertise in traditional architecture with speculative and conceptual work to help people imagine where the future may be headed. Their perspective is unique, especially for the world of consumer tech, and helps create a completely new paradigm for thinking. In the episode, we cover a breadth of fascinating topics from:The architectural point of view, and how it transitions from traditional architecture to how it should be thought about in a limitless virtual realmA vision of the future where architecture will happen at the speed of the the spoken wordWhy portals will become the one of the most common design elements moving forward, the same way cars were in the past eraABOUT THE GUESTSpace Popular is a research driven art, design, and media studio that explores the future of spatial experience through virtual reality, film, exhibitions, speculative writing, as well as buildings and objects. The pandemic has changed the way we work and shop meaning a growing number of offices and retail outlets are empty. So, what do we do with them? Knock them down and start again or find a sustainable way to reuse them? The buzz word is ‘retrofit': redesigning and refurbishing an existing building. Elsie Owusu is an architect and, in this episode of Costing the Earth, she explores this current and contentious issue. It's usually cheaper to build new, so what can be done to encourage developers and architects to change their plans. She visits Selkirk House on Museum Street in London. Developers want to demolish this 1960s concrete tower-block and build something bigger in its place. Campaigners say that a vast amount of CO2 emissions would be saved it the building is retrofitted. Architect, Peter Fisher, takes Elsie to a 1950s, concrete, former print-works which is being refurbished. Just five years ago Peter says the decision would have been made to demolish but, times are changing, and by choosing retrofit CO2 emissions will be reduced by 50%. Smith Mordak takes a wider view of the debate, arguing that a cultural shift is needed across architecture and the associated disciplines. The automatic response to a design challenge of building new, or even building at all, should be rejected; there are more creative and greener ways of thinking to explore first. Contributors: Simon Alford of the Royal Institute of British Architects; Howard Crawshaw of the Knight Property Group; Jim Monahan of Save Museum Street; Simon Sturgis of Targeting Zero; Peter Fisher of Bennetts Associates; Smith Mordak of Buro Happold. US President Joe Biden signed an executive order on December 8 outlining a multi-billion-dollar plan for the federal government to achieve ‘net zero' by 2050, The Verge reports. Under the plan, the US government will switch to electric vehicles, upgrade federal buildings, and use the power of the government to shift to cleaner forms of electricity. The government will stop purchasing petrol-powered passenger cars in 2027 but would only achieve 100 percent electric vehicle purchases by 2035. Biden's order will direct the government to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent by the end of the decade before reaching full carbon neutrality by 2050. Amazon has been fined € 1.13 billion ($1.28 billion) by Italy's anti-trust regulator, CNBC reports. The Italian competition regulator, AGCM, has found that Amazon abused its market dominance by promoting its own logistics service, called Fulfilment Amazon. It claimed businesses had to use the FBA service to access benefits such as selling products with Prime delivery and participation in Black Friday sales. Amazon said, it "strongly disagrees" with the decision, and would appeal. Instagram's chief Adam Mosseri has called on US lawmakers to help regulate the platform, at a Senate hearing on December 8, which examined the harmful impact of social media on the mental health of teen users, BBC reports. Mosseri argued that Instagram is actively working to address the app's negative effects. However, he called for the creation of industry-wide regulations to police how social media platforms can operate. The round saw participation from all existing investors, including Akamai Technologies and Glasswing Ventures, as well as new investors Allstate and the Minderoo Foundation's Frontier Technology Initiative. At Inrupt, Berners-Lee, the creator of the standards of the world wide web, and co-founder John Bruce are attempting to “reshape the internet” by building a platform that gives users control of their data. The 10-year old startup describes itself as an online whiteboard platform for team collaboration. Miro's ‘infinite canvas' enables teams to lead engaging workshops and meetings, design products, and brainstorm ideas. Miro claims 25 million users worldwide, including more than 100,000 enterprise customers and 95 percent of the world's 100 biggest companies. Miro was founded by Andrey Khusid and Oleg Shardin in 2011. Meanwhile, Pleo, a Danish startup that makes expense management tools aimed at SMBs, has raised $200 million in fresh funding that doubles its value to $4.7 billion, TechCrunch reports. Jeppe Rindom, Pleo's co-founder and CEO, said it will use the money for acquisitions, accelerating expansion to new markets, adding more functionality to its product. Pleo helps SMBs issue company cards and better manage how employees spend money. Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi has been awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects' Royal Gold Medal for 2022, Dezeen magazine reports. A city that is good for children, is good for everyone. A concept that has begun to gain more traction as cities look to new urbanism principles to apply to their respective cities. It’s one Tim Gill, author of Urban Playground: How Child-Friendly Planning and Design Can Save Cities, has been championing since the nineties. Based in the UK, he has laid a foundation for a career in research on the topic and was the former director of Play England, a children’s play council. In Tim’s book, he asks questions like “what type of cities do we want our children to grow up in? Car-dominated, noisy, polluted, and devoid of nature? Or walkable, welcoming, and green?” He emphasizes that “as the climate crisis and urbanisation escalate, cities urgently need to become more inclusive and sustainable”. His book helps us “look at cities through the eyes of children while strengthening the case for planning and transportation policies that work for people of all ages, and for the planet”. When reviewing Tim’s book ahead of this episode, we found ourselves projecting my own childhoods onto much of what he shared in his work—an experience I think anyone might share upon reading. He invites us to look at cities through the eyes of our inner child, and revisit childhood memories of play. Tim’s book, Urban Playground: How Child-Friendly Planning and Design Can Save Cities, was published this year by the Royal Institute of British Architects. -- Design and the City, is a podcast produced by reSITE about the ways we can use design to make cities more livable and lovable. reSITE is a global non-profit and platform connecting people and ideas to improve the urban environment. COVID-19 is an x-ray of racial injustice, inequality, and ineffectual government as well as a rehearsal for climate catastrophe. It exposes a modern mind that maintains the myth of solutions, newness, freedom, and universals. That mind gives authority to new digital technologies, econometrics, and law, to segregate and eliminate problems. COVID graphically models the productive entanglement between problems as well as forms for re-tuning and redesigning those entanglements. Interplay itself is the form—protocols of interplay that resist solutions or modular methodologies. Unfolding over time and indeterminate in order to be practical, they generate lumpy mixtures of different kinds of artifacts in space. Consider design protocols that deal with, among many other things, automation, migration, police defunding, cooperative land tenure, coastal retreat, reforestation and compounding reparations. SPEAKERSKeller Easterling is an architect, writer and professor at Yale. Her most recent book, Extrastatecraft: The Power of Infrastructure Space (Verso, 2014), examines global infrastructure as a medium of polity. A recently published e-book essay titled Medium Design (Strelka Press, 2018) previews a forthcoming book of the same title. Medium Design inverts an emphasis on object and figure to prompt innovative thought about both spatial and non-spatial problems. Other books include: Enduring Innocence: Global Architecture and its Political Masquerades (MIT, 2005) which researched familiar spatial products in difficult or hyperbolic political situations around the world. Organization Space: Landscapes, Highways and Houses in America (MIT, 1999) which applied network theory to a discussion of American infrastructure, and Subtraction (Sternberg, 2014), which considers building removal or how to put the development machine into reverse. Easterling is a 2019 United States Artist Fellow in Architecture and Design. She was also the recipient of the 2019 Blueprint Award for Critical Thinking. Her MANY project, an online platform facilitating migration through an exchange of needs, was exhibited at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. Her research and writing on the floor comprised one of the elements in Rem Koolhaas's Elements exhibition for the 2014 Venice Biennale. Easterling is also the co-author (with Richard Prelinger) of Call it Home: The House that Private Enterprise Built, a laserdisc/DVD history of US suburbia from 1934–1960. She has published web installations including: Extrastatecraft, Wildcards: a Game of Orgman and Highline: Plotting NYC. Easterling has exhibited at Henry Art Gallery, the Istanbul Design Biennale, Storefront for Art and Architecture, the Rotterdam Biennale, the Queens Museum and the Architectural League. Easterling has lectured and published widely in the United States and abroad. The journals to which she has contributed include Domus, Artforum, Grey Room, Cabinet, Volume, Assemblage, e-flux, Log, Praxis, Harvard Design Magazine, Perspecta, and ANY. Shumi Bose is a teacher, curator and editor based in London. She is a senior lecturer in history and theory of architecture at Central Saint Martins, and teaches Critical and Historical Studies at the Royal College of Art. She is also curator of exhibitions at the Royal Institute of British Architects. Exhibitions include Freestyle: Architectural Adventures in Mass Media, a RIBA commission by Space Popular, currently on both virtual and shuttered physical display, and Conservatism, or The Long Reign of Pseudo Georgian Architecture, with Pablo Bronstein in 2017. . Shumi co-curated Home Economics at the British Pavilion, for the 15th Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2016, exploring the future of the home through a series of 1:1 domestic proposals. Staging Magic in English Catholic College Drama Ushaw Lecture by Professor Alison Shell (University College London) --About the Lecture Dramatised magic was popular in early modern theatre, and never more so than within the dramatic corpus of the English Catholic colleges set up in continental Europe after the Reformation. Many of these colleges were controlled by the Jesuit order, who played a major role in developing stage technology in this era. Written for performance by the young scholars at these colleges, these plays constitute a kind of children’s literature, and frequently draw on magical themes. They have a didactic message, pitting devil-worshippers against followers of Christ, and the fantastic element must also have appealed to the schoolboy imagination. Audiences of these popular civic events, whether or not they could understand the Latin in which the plays were performed, would have enjoyed the opportunity for spectacle provided by maguses and conjuring tricks. This lecture is organised by the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies and the Centre for Catholic Studies, Durham University, in conjunction with Ushaw College. --About the Speaker Alison Shell was educated at the North London Collegiate School and Oxford University (B.A./M.A. and D.Phil.). After a period as Rare Books Curator at the Royal Institute of British Architects, Alison became a British Academy Post-Doctoral Fellow at UCL between 1994 and 1997. Her first permanent academic post was at the University of Durham, where she worked between 1997 and 2010. Alison is an editor for the Pontifical Institute of Medieval Studies’ series ‘Catholic and Recusant Texts in Early Modern England’. She reviews for the Times Literary Supplement, the Church Times and a number of academic journals. --About the Ushaw Lecture Series The Ushaw Lecture Series celebrates the cultural and research significance of the remarkable bibliographical, archival and material-cultural collections at Ushaw, and the wider history of which they are expressions. The lectures cover music, art, drama, poetry and literature, architecture, material-culture, politics, science and theology.

We’re 40! How did that happen? We grew up so quickly….. It doesn’t seem like two minutes ago that Bradley and I recorded the first, very shaky and nervous, episode back in January 2018. A lot has changed since then.Outerfocus started as a way to introduce some photography history, in an easily digestible manner, and to have conversations with photographers, about photography. The two things that helped me most with my own photography were: An understanding of where photography came from, and, what drove photographers to practice. Although the photography history aspect of the podcast has dwindled somewhat in the past few months, I feel the conversations are becoming stronger, and that takes us on to the, ‘why’. The, ‘why’, is what helped me to understand myself and the world around me. I learned more about photography by understanding the philosophies of photographers than I did by looking at their photographs. It made me realise that the idea is important, and the photograph is just a consequence of our study and practice. Maybe not for everyone, but that’s how I came to understand it and it fundamentally changed me as a human being. It also freed me from not just the constraints of industry expectations, but societal expectations, too. So, Happy 40th to Outerfocus! I hope that me passing on some of what I think is important in photography, and life, can raise some questions and create some new ideas for you. I’m not doing this alone mind you. The guests are adding their own unique perspective to the Outerfocus archive, and I’m still learning, a lot, and long may that continue.I expect you all know of the photographers that had an influence on me, but there are some that never really get a mention. Mostly because the genres they work in don’t come up in conversation too frequently. I mean, name one architectural photographer…….I could easily name a few, but that’s because it’s something I have a great interest in. I know who the first one would be, though, and when it comes to individuality there aren’t many better than the rather exceptional, Hélène Binet.Hélène is a Swiss-French architectural photographer living in London, and she is one of the leading architectural photographers in the world. Best known for her work with architects Daniel Libeskind, Peter Zumthor and Zaha Hadid, she has published books on works of several architects. She is the recipient of many awards over her 30+ year career including an Honorary Fellowship of Royal Institute of British Architects, 2008.Most recently she was honored with the Julius Shulman Institute Excellence in Photography Award in 2015, The Ada Louise Huxtable Prize 2019 ..........Full show notes -

In my correspondence with Owusu to arrange our interview, she analogized the issue this way (paraphrased here): an African-American or minority ethnic female actor (her) being nominated for an Oscar, only to have a white actor who hasn't even made a film "parachuted in" and given an award for Best Supporting Actor. I wanted to speak with Owusu about her work alongside issues of diversity and exclusion in practice generally, and also at the institutional level of RIBA. We discuss the allegations, but Owusu is quick to point out that these conversations need to happen regardless of any publicized incidents – keeping these discussions going is vital if the profession is ever going to improve.

China's development and speculation about its future impact on the world are stimulating considerable attention in design-related disciplines internationally. This process has already encouraged various forms of cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary dialogue that will inevitably enrich our understanding of design and improve our responses to future design-related problems. However, much of this discourse tends to focus on either pre-twentieth century themes (e.g. China's ancient sites and cultural relics) or China's rapid contemporary development. Less consideration is given to the period linking these two phases – a period defined by modernisation that witnessed for the first time the synthesis of two formally disparate cultures, summarised albeit inaptly as ‘East' and ‘West'. The symbiosis of these two groups evolved important hybrid design solutions that are unique to China and might usefully inform cultural studies and proffer pertinent lessons for contemporary problem solving in architecture, design and urban planning. Despite the uniqueness of its experience during the first decades of the twentieth century, China remains under-represented among internationally recognised academic studies and published literature, and among organisations whose stated purpose is to improve the understanding of early twentieth century architecture and related design activities. This lack of representation is mirrored also inside China, where only very recently have early twentieth century architecture and urban history in general been viewed as having value (actual and scientific). This trend, together with the widespread destruction or reconfiguration of buildings and spaces taking place in most of China's cities, is prompting more attention to and research of this period. The focus of this research is on the influence of Modernism in China in the first half of the twentieth century. It aims to explore this movement from the perspective of architecture and urban development and assess the impact of ideological transformations that took place between and among Chinese and foreign practitioners during this period. It is also focusing on the impact of Modernism and its various manifestations by investigating the architects and planners, designers and engineers, builders and craftsmen, and artists and writers, who introduced or embraced modernity, and how these impacted upon the distinctive principles and styles of Modernism and how these were assimilated in ways unique to China. The study will consider also the physical, economic, creative and ideological parallels between this epoch and China's contemporary development and what, if anything, such historiographical comparisons can offer current practitioners. This research forms the basis of an exhibition at the Royal Institute of British Architects from July-September 2008, in collaboration with China's leading urban heritage organisation, the Ruan Yi San Foundation, based in Shanghai.

The castaway in Desert Island Discs this week is the architect Maxwell Hutchinson. Unafraid of controversy, he attacked Prince Charles' criticisms of contemporary architecture - a move which secured him presidency of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He'll be talking to Sue Lawley about his love of tower blocks and requiem masses, of 17th-century cottages and his desire to write a number one hit.[Taken from the original programme material for this archive edition of Desert Island Discs] Favourite track: First Symphony In A Flat Minor Slow Movement by Edward Elgar Book: The Four Quartets by T S Eliot Luxury: Guitar
