Reimagining Affordable Healthcare with Mark Newman of Nomi Health In this compelling episode, Michael connects with Mark Newman, co-founder and CEO of Nomi Health, to tackle the unsustainable state of the U.S. healthcare system. Mark shares a bold vision: rebuilding healthcare from the ground up to be 30–50% more affordable. With every American contributing $1,600 annually to Medicare, Mark emphasizes that we can't afford not to innovate. Together, they unpack how business-minded strategies can drive healthcare transformation—making it not only more cost-effective but more accessible for everyone. Cutting Through Complexity: Transparent Pricing in Healthcare Michael and Mark dive deep into one of the healthcare system's most pressing pain points: the lack of pricing transparency. From surprise bills to excessive admin burdens, they expose how the system drives up costs and burns out providers. Mark offers a refreshing solution—transparent, upfront pricing with no copays or deductibles. This model empowers patients, increases provider compensation, and saves employers and families money. It's a call to action for simplicity and clarity in care. Preventative Care: The $500 Billion Solution What if we could save half a trillion dollars a year by focusing on prevention instead of reaction? Mark presents a transformative idea: double the compensation of primary care providers and pivot the system toward proactive, preventative care for every American. The initial investment—around $200 billion—pales in comparison to the potential economic impact: a trillion dollars returned annually to businesses, families, and government. Michael and Mark explore how prioritizing wellness today can dramatically reshape our health and financial future. Fixing What's Broken: A Smarter Approach to Healthcare Wrapping up the conversation, Michael and Mark shine a light on the root inefficiencies plaguing today's healthcare ecosystem. From misaligned incentives that reward reactive treatment to outdated administrative processes, it's clear the system needs a redesign. Mark calls for a healthcare model that prioritizes simplicity, efficiency, and preventative care. He encourages listeners ready to be part of the solution to learn more at nomihealth.com.  Mark Newman Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, Nomi Health Mark Newman is a visionary leader who is reshaping the healthcare landscape as the co-founder and CEO of Nomi Health. Mark Newman, CEO of Nomi Health, focuses on building an operating system for self-insured healthcare to lower costs, remove friction, and simplify the transaction process for employers and providers. Nomi emphasizes holistic preventative healthcare by eliminating barriers like deductibles and copays to encourage the utilization of primary care, mental health, and other services.  The company leverages technology, AI, and asynchronous care to improve access to diverse communities, including Spanish-speaking and low-income workers. Mark explains, "Our model, starting from scratch and starting from a blank sheet of paper, is focused on getting providers out of the collection business so they can focus on the care business. Simplifying the entire transaction of buying and paying for healthcare has been a revolutionary way for our customers to cut their healthcare costs by 20% to 30%. And someday, I think we can hit 50%." "Last time I checked the cost curve in American healthcare has not slowed down and has done nothing but accelerate. So, in my book, I think value-based care has pretty much failed and has been more of a pipe dream versus reality. Our world is how do we take the same doctors, same care and cut 25% of the cost out of it by removing all the friction and pain points and ambiguity and noise as it relates to what an employer pays for healthcare and what a provider collects for delivering that healthcare. We're betting on our model and hope for the best on things like value-based care or other models, but we haven't seen the results delivered yet."  #NomiHealth #HealthcareIndustry #HealthInsurance #Healthcare #HealthcareCEO  nomihealth.com Download the transcript here

If you clicked on this episode, then I'm guessing that you already know WHAT the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists membership exams are. Maybe you're considering sitting them, or perhaps you've already put your hand up for 2025, but you still have so many questions. Like, how much time would I need to commit, how much study is required each week, HOW hard is it actually, WHAT do I need to study, and how do I set myself up for success? Should I do a course, how do I utilise me mentors, or my study group, and perhaps the most important question… WHY would I even put myself through it?! This episode is made up of multiple conversations about surgery membership, and it will answer all of those questions and more. We talk to specialist surgeons Dr Chris Tan and Dr Mark Newman, as well as membership candidate (at the time of recording) Dr Stephen Mansour and recent successful membership candidate Dr Justin Ward. While the conversation focuses on surgery memberships, most of the information will be applicable to any of the specialties.  If you need an on-the-go study aid for your surgery membership prep, or if you just want to take your surgery theoretical knowledge to the next level, check out our advanced surgery podcast at cutabove.supercast.com Oh, and if you were just curious about what membership exams are: the ANZCS (Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists) membership exams are rigorous assessments designed to evaluate the clinical knowledge and expertise of veterinarians who want to level up in their field of interest. Anyone with a degree that is eligible for registration in Australia or New Zealand and with more than 3.5 years in practice can register to sit memberships. [If you enjoy this podcast, please give us a rating and review on Apple Podcasts, so more people will find The Rational Wellness Podcast. Also check out the video version on my WeitzChiro YouTube page.]  Podcast Highlights 1:48  Dried urine testing or DUTCH testing uses a dried sample for convenience, which is a big advantage over the other leading type of urine hormone testing, which is the 24 hour urine test that requires carrying around a jug of urine that you keep in the refrigerator all day.  This is very inconvenient and you lose the the changes in those hormones levels, esp. cortisol, that vary throughout the day using a 24 hour sample.  The dried urine test you collect samples throughout the day so you can look at the cortisol pattern, which correlates with what is seen on saliva in studies that have been published.  And the urine testing of hormones allows you to see the metabolites of estrogens and androgens that you can't see on blood testing.  And there is a DUTCH complete test that includes markers in urine for melatonin and B12 and B6, etc. that allows us to see a fuller picture of the hormone story.  For example, this complete testing is helpful if you have a patient who has fatigue you can find out if it is related to testosterone or cortisol or B12. 4:57  On the other hand, dried urine testing does not allow you to measure SHBG, which can be measured through blood, such as when a woman is on birth control and this drives up her SHBG, which drives down her free hormones. Urine testing is also not a good way to measure thyroid hormones. Also, if your kidneys are not functioning well, then you are not excreting urine as well as you should and this can impact urine testing. Also, saliva has some advantages for the cortisol awakening response (CAR), so DUTCH plus includes saliva for the first two samples of cortisol, since for the CAR you need an instantaneous sample when you first wake up within the first five minutes.  DUTCH uses a cotton swab that soaks up saliva instead of having to spit into a tube like other labs use and fill it with 3 ml of saliva after waking up without rinsing your mouth and without drinking any water and for most people this takes 15-20 min, which negates the value of the CAR test.                                Mark Newman, MS is a recognized expert and international speaker in the field of hormone testing. Mark spent nearly 25 years developing and directing urine, blood, and saliva-based hormone testing along with other biomarkers like organic acids. His unique experience led him to pursue a revolutionary way to test hormones; so Mark began his own lab, Precision Analytical Inc., to create the latest innovation in hormone testing, the DUTCH Test® (a Dried Urine Test for Comprehensive Hormones). In pursuit of the most accurate, evidence-based testing and best practices, Mark has co-written multiple peer-reviewed research papers and abstracts, highlighting the accuracy and clinical utility of dried urine hormone testing. Mark's primary educational goal is to find and communicate truths about HRT monitoring to help providers care for their patients. He understands that each form of testing has its own strengths and weaknesses, which is why he encourages clinicians to follow the evidence even when lab testing isn't clinically helpful. For clinicians to learn more about the DUTCH test, go to DUTCHtest.com.  Patients can find a referral to a DUTCH Lab provider to order and interpret the testing for them. Mark Newman is the second CEO of Chemours, a chemical company that spun out of DuPont in 2015. Chemours is now a global company with almost 7,000 employees, $7 billion in revenue and has three industry-leading businesses. Chemours may be best known for producing Teflon, a chemical coating associated with non-stick surface on pots and pans. Teflon is also considered a polyfluoroalkyl substance. Polyfluoroalkyl substances (better know as PFAS) are a class of chemicals considered “forever chemicals” meaning they don't break down in the environment, and are linked to a number of health problems. Production of some of these chemical has landed Chemours in legal and regulatory trouble in the past, but Newman thinks Chemours can right its past environmental wrongs and has worked to weave sustainability into the company's next chapter. Math and music share their mystery and magic. Three notes, played together, make a chord whose properties could not be predicted from those of the separate notes. In the West, music theory and mathematics have common origins and a rich history of shaping and informing one another's field of inquiry. And, curiously, Western composition has evolved over several hundred years in much the same way economies and agents in long-running simulations have: becoming measurably more complex; encoding more and more environmental structure. (But then, sometimes collapses happen, and everything gets simpler.) Music theorists, like the alchemists that came before them, are engaged in a centuries-long project of deciphering the invisible geometry of these relationships. What is the hidden grammar that connects The Beatles to Johann Sebastian Bach — and how similar is it to the hidden order disclosed by complex systems science? In other words, what makes for “good” music, and what does it have to do with the coherence of the natural world?Welcome to COMPLEXITY, the official podcast of the Santa Fe Institute. I'm your host, Michael Garfield, and every other week we'll bring you with us for far-ranging conversations with our worldwide network of rigorous researchers developing new frameworks to explain the deepest mysteries of the universe. This week on the show, we speak with mathematician and composer Dmitri Tymozcko at Princeton University, whose work provides a new rigor to the study of the Western canon and illuminates “the shape of music” — a hyperspatial object from which all works of baroque, classical, romantic, modern, jazz, and pop are all low-dimensional projections. In the first conversation for this podcast with MIDI keyboard accompaniment, we follow upon Gottfried Leibniz's assertion that music is “the unconscious exercise of our mathematical powers.” We explore how melodies and harmonies move through mathematical space in ways quite like the metamorphoses of living systems as they traverse evolutionary fitness landscapes. We examine the application of information theory to chord categorization and functional harmony. And we ask about the nature of randomness, the roles of parsimony and consilience in both art and life.If you value our research and communication efforts, please subscribe, rate and review us at Apple Podcasts, and consider making a donation — or finding other ways to engage with us — at santafe.edu/engage. Virtuoso Slide Guitarist & Powerhouse, Ace Stringman Mark Newman on how to DeliverAs I navigate the musical waters of the Long Island Sound, more often than not I'm blessed to find some great music well up in my wheelhouse.  And that's how I felt as I experienced Mark Newman's music Growing up in New York, Mark Newman's musical journey has taken him around the world several times as both sideman and singer/songwriter. This ace string man (guitar, lap steel, mandolin, dobro) and accomplished songwriter is the type of singer whose warm and expressive voice sounds like an old friend. He put it all together on 2006's “Must Be A Pony”   In 2010 he took a quantum leap forward with the stunning “Walls Of Jericho”   and has just released, “Brussels”, a live solo EP. “Empirical Truth”, his latest CD was released in June, 2018 (Danal Music, LLC, by WBA Records). It won best CD from the Long Island Blues Society. Sharing the stage with such notables as soul legend Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), John Oates(Hall and Oates), Jim McCarty (Yardbirds, Renaissance),the late Willy DeVille (Mink DeVille), Bobby Whitlock (Derek and the Dominos) and Sam The Sham, has given Newman the perspective to craft an individualistic sound framed in straight-from-the-hip rock'n'roll, simmering with the subtle flavors of blues, R'n'B, funk, folk and soul.(New York, NY) — It was announced today that The Long Island Blues Society has named EMPIRICAL TRUTH by Mark Newman their 2019 CD Challenge winner. As the local winner, EMPIRICAL TRUTH will represent the Long Island Blues Society in the International Blues Challenge's Self-Produced CD Contest; which happens in Memphis from January 28th to February 1st, 2020. Empirical Truth is also currently #1 in its category on the Reverbnation charts.  Listen to Empirical Truth on Spotify here:https://open.spotify.com/album/3Y5bQm8AOQPoFGmRyyaPVB It can certainly be said that a labor of love is not much of labor at all, and with singer/songwriter and guitarist Mark Newman's latest release “Empirical Truth” (via Danal Music) this is very much the case, as he's proven once again his power of true musicianship.Connect with The Long Island Sound Podcast:Website: Https://GigDestiny.com/podcast Follow Steve Yusko, GigDestiny.com, and his adventures:  Website: https://www.GigDestiny.com  Twitter, Instagram,  YouTube, FacebookSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/21aCeQWDmD4fkucpfVf9Email: Steve@GigDestiny.com Intro/Outro song in this episode:“Fading out Fast” from Mike Nugent's album, The growth of The Long Island Sound Podcast has been exponential. In Desegregating Dixie: The Catholic Church in the South and Desegregation, 1945-1992 (UP of Mississippi, 2018), Mark Newman draws on a vast range of archives and many interviews to uncover for the first time the complex response of African American and white Catholics across the South to desegregation. In the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century, the southern Catholic Church contributed to segregation by confining African Americans to the back of white churches and to black-only schools and churches. However, in the twentieth century, papal adoption and dissemination of the doctrine of the Mystical Body of Christ, pressure from some black and white Catholics, and secular change brought by the civil rights movement increasingly led the Church to address racial discrimination both inside and outside its walls. Far from monolithic, white Catholics in the South split between a moderate segregationist majority and minorities of hard-line segregationists and progressive racial egalitarians. While some bishops felt no discomfort with segregation, prelates appointed from the late 1940s onward tended to be more supportive of religious and secular change. Some bishops in the peripheral South began desegregation before or in anticipation of secular change while elsewhere, especially in the Deep South, they often tied changes in the Catholic churches to secular desegregation. African American Catholics were diverse and more active in the civil rights movement than has often been assumed. While some black Catholics challenged racism in the Church, many were conflicted about the manner of Catholic desegregation generally imposed by closing valued black institutions. Tracing its impact through the early 1990s, Newman reveals how desegregation shook congregations but seldom brought about genuine integration.
