Go to https://ExpressVPN.com/Piers and find out how you can get 4 months of ExpressVPN free John Oliver stirred controversy this week by hosting a special on what he calls a right-wing obsession with trans athletes in women's sports. JK Rowling told him to “read the effing room” and shared a post which slammed his 45-minute special for claiming there's basically no advantage for male athletes and that men almost never beat women. On that same night, the UK Women's Pool Championship Final was contested by two people who were born as men. So who is obsessed? And who is right? For a debate that gets personal, Piers Morgan hosts feminist writer and the co-founder of Justice for Women Julie Bindel, The Crucible host Andrew Wilson, journalist Emily Austin and trans rights advocate Stassia Underwood. This time on the podcast my guest is Tina Backhouse, General Manager at Theramex. Tina joined Theramex in 2020 to lead the UK Women's Health business, helping to establish them as the largest supplier of HRT & Menopause Products in the UK. She is passionate about ensuring equality of care for all women regarding their health in the UK, and that women have choice in their healthcare options. She joins us to discuss the recent research the company funded to investigate disparities in access to menopause support: for example, just 5% of black women are on HRT vs 20% of white women, and individuals in areas of social deprivation are significantly less likely to be prescribed the newer, safer forms of HRT. We also cover some of Tina's ongoing frustrations at the lack of prioritization and funding available for women's healthcare - such as the fact that NHS England developed a public health campaign for menopause that was never launched due to lack of funding. Would it surprise you to know that the UK currently has the largest gender health gap in the G20? We also have a staggering 35% gender pension gap. The report, published in April 202 interviewed a range of clinicians and allied healthcare professionals, and is available to download at: https://www.theramex.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Theramex_Tackling-Unequal-Access-to-Menopause-Care.pdf - we discuss the five recommendations that the report concludes with, including better training for GPs and other allied healthcare professionals, and the creation of a national formulary to end the current postcode lottery whereby some newer HRT is available in some areas but not others. In 2023, the UK Alumni Association is celebrating 135 Years of UK Women in honor of the graduation of its first female, Belle C. Gunn, in 1888. The first event to kick off this initiative was a Luncheon and Panel Discussion featuring four prominent alumnae: Jennifer Barber, Dr. Laneshia Conner, Dr. Ima Ebong and Ouita Michel. UK Student Government Association Vice President Amelia Pace served as the discussion moderator. These women shared personal experiences from their career journeys as well as practical advice for the audience of current students and alumni. Nationally, March is designated as Women's History Month, a time set aside to honor the contributions of women throughout American history. On campus, in 2023, we are celebrating the 135th anniversary of UK's first female graduate, Belle C. Gunn, as well as the numerous women who have followed in her footsteps in making a positive impact upon UK. This historic event marks the beginning of a year-long remembrance of the numerous ways women have made strides toward equality in higher education. This month's From the Blue podcast features a conversation between UK Alumni Association Executive Director Jill Smith and Associate Director for Administration and Strategic Initiatives Christina Yue, who discuss a little of the history of women at the University of Kentucky.
