ASHLEY ORLANDOLouisiana native Ashley Orlando is a classically trained soprano and public relations professional who found herself in a musical rut 4 years ago. During an unexpected trip to Hawaii, she discovered the magic of the ukulele and hasn’t put the instrument down since. While her voice and communication skills have afforded her the opportunity to sing and teach in the U.S., Canada and Europe, adding the ukulele to her arsenal of skills has propelled Ashley to new musical heights centered around her first love: jazz. Now based in Houston, Texas, she enjoys inspiring others to realize their own personal and professional dreams. Ashley performs throughout the Greater Houston Area with her band, Vintage Point; builds community as a co-leader and outreach organizer for Houkulele, Houston’s Ukulele Club; speaks and educates through the Greater Houston Area District of Toastmasters International; and shares about the healing power of music as an advisory board member for the Ukulele Kids Club. Ann Hannan, MT-BC, is a board certified music therapist and developed the first music therapy clinical program at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health beginning in 2000. She has been the director of the Riley Cheer Guild and Music Therapy Programs since February 2016. With over 20 years of pediatric music therapy clinical expertise, Ann specialized in neonatal and infant intervention. She has presented at local, state, regional, and national conferences on topics such as infant development and bonding, family-centered care practices, professional collaboration, clinical service triage methods, music therapy program development, music therapy advocacy, medical ethics, and professional self-care. Ann supervises the pediatric music therapy clinicians at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana and serves on various hospital-based committees with a special focus on enhancing the hospital experience for patients, their families, and the staff who care for them. She completed her medical ethics fellowship in 2015 with the Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics. Ann currently serves as an at-large member on the state board for the Spina Bifida Association of Indiana and as a national advisory board member for the Ukulele Kids Club organization. 065 Bob Tigert—Ukulele Kids Club Kids in Hospitals, Music, the Real Deal—What’s Not to Like? Bob Tigert just "sorta fell into" his volunteer position on the board of the Ukulele Kids Club. "When they asked me, I had never heard of it. 'What is that?' I had to ask." A ukulele (and guitar and bass) player, Bob quickly decided the organization was the "real deal"—grassroots, amazingly noble, and very effective in the execution of its mission, which is two-fold: To bring music into the lives of hurting children To support the work of music therapists who work with children in hospitals Less than five years old, UKC has already changed the lives of nearly 5,000 children in close to 200 hospitals in multiple states and now Canada simply by providing music therapists this simple instrument. The ukulele allows them to teach the children how to make music while confined to their hospital bed. Small enough to be easily held, ukuleles are super easy to learn to play. With the help of the therapist, patients quickly begin playing tunes and singing. They have something creative, uplifting, and fun to focus on instead of what is wrong and hurting. Music becomes part of their healing. Volunteers do not go to the hospitals to help the children directly. That is the role of the professional music therapists. Volunteers put their efforts into raising the funds to buy the ukuleles that the therapists will use with the child and then leave for the child to continue to play at home. Purchased through a special arrangement with an instrument-making company, each ukulele costs only $40. Volunteers get to use their creativity too in raising funds. Often the event is a concert by musicians—a natural fit. But in New Orleans, the tattoo parlors each take a ukulele and paint it with their special artistry and then sell the "tattooed" ukes online, last year raising $15,000. Volunteers use whatever skills they bring in support of the fundraising efforts. Bob's career had been as a videographer. He has put his skill back to work to tell the story of the Ukulele Kids Club. But like Bob, you simply need to care about kids in hospitals, recognize the power of music to bring healing, and value being part of a real-deal organization that is definitely changing lives.
