JOHN McCUTCHEON AND TOM PAXTON JOIN FORCES TO CREATE THEIR FIRST JOINT RECORDING TITLED ‘TOGETHER' John McCutcheon and Tom Paxton have been pals for decades, but it was COVID and Zoom that turned them into a songwriting team. Every Monday at 2PM they'd tell jokes, reminisce about old friends, and, of course, talk lots of sports. What happens when two of folk music's most beloved and prolific songwriters join forces? Songs about history, the news, baseball, cowboys, America, love, the remembered, the forgotten. The arrangements are compelling, the production pristine, and the performances stunning. From the stirring “Ukrainian Now” to the hilarious “Same Old Crap,” the immigrant story of “In America” to the heart stopping finale, “Together,” each song shines as would be expected of this partnership. John McCutcheon & Tom Paxton together have seeded the folk music landscape with hundreds of songs, sung by thousands for decades. With the album ‘Together', they add another bunch of great new ones to the repertoire of our time. And, given the bounty of those Monday afternoons, this is only the beginning. PLEASE WELCOME TWO FOLK LEGENDS JOHN MCCUTCHEON AND TOM PAXTON TO INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS … PURCHASE THE LATEST ALBUM BY Tom Paxton and John McCutcheon entitled ‘Together' The long-awaited collaboration between two of folk music's most beloved and prolific songwriters. The COVID pandemic finally brought these two old friends together via weekly Zoom cowriting sessions. This fourteen-song collection released on Appalsongs Records, barely scratches the surface of the hundred-or-so songs John & Tom came up with. With pristine production and world-class musicianship, the songs cover ground from Ukraine to Ellis Island to Shakey's Pizza to a cowboy campfire. Why would a guitar shop still be closed to the public in 2023? In today's episode we're discussing a topic that Maury found while watching Casino Guitars on YouTube. During the pandemic, guitar shops were forced to close their doors. Many learned to leverage their internet presence to make up for the lost foot traffic. Here at Maury's Music, we were already focusing almost all of our efforts online anyway. Now it's safe to allow customers to visit again, but some stores never pivoted away from the online-only model. We hope to begin scheduling appointments again sometime soon & the timing of the Casino Guitars video fits perfectly into our most recent episode. Why are some guitar shops still online only? Or by appointment? Sit back & relax as Maury & Spoon get their guitar shop chat on. This podcast features the conversation and opinions of musician T Spoon Phillips. A writer by trade, Spoon's longtime association with professional musicians, luthiers, and music historians affords him a richly unique perspective on all things acoustic guitar. This includes decades of close friendship with executives and employee at C. F. Martin & Company, past and present, and the host of this podcast, Maury Rutch of Maury's Music.

Episode 202 features Stephen of Truly Strings Guitar Shop. He is a local luthier based out of Laurel, MD and has been the O.G. sponsor of this show. I've wanted to get him on the pod for a long time and we finally made it happen. He's got a cool story behind how he got into working on guitars and we also talked some of the other things he's into such as Yoga, songwirting, and “finding the muse.” I featured two live recorded acoustic tunes that Stephen played after the conversation. The first one you'll hear is called “Stone Cold” and the one at the end, which we touched on in the interview, is called “Friday Night.” As I say every episode, I take all my guitars to Stephen and if your guitars ever need some attention you can email him at stephen@trulystringsandthings.com and he'll get back to you quick. You can also find Truly Strings on Instagram and Facebook. They received the Golden Buzzer from guest judge Olivia Munn for their rendition of "Baba Yetu." Series creator and judge Simon Cowell praised them as "one of the best choirs we've ever had." The choir touched nearly 20 million viewers with its rich sound and compelling message of unity and diversity. In 2010, a photographer named Reuben Cox moved to Los Angeles to start Old Style Guitar Shop. In the years since, the instruments that he continues to repair and sell have come to define the sound of the LA indie folk scene among artists like Blake Mills, Andrew Bird, Madison Cunningham, Ethan Gruska and Phoebe Bridgers. Reuben's guitars are Frankenstein-esque creations, cobbled together from spare parts and neglected guitar bodies found in flea markets and estate sales. The sounds that these make, though, are as eccentric as their source: the strings are laid on top of Reuben's signature, a rubber bridge. This sound, and the mythos of the rubber bridge guitar, has turned Reuben into a local celebrity and put Old Style at the center of Los Angeles's indie music scene. In this episode of Switched on Pop, host Charlie Harding explores that sound and the man behind it all. Beyond being the final guest of season 1 of The Load Out music podcast, who is John McEuen? He's one of the founding fathers of the alt-country movement, which largely stemmed from a collection of immensely talented southern California musicians in the mid-1960s such as Merle Haggard, David Crosby, Jerry Garcia, Roger McGuinn, Gram Parsons, Jackson Browne and many others. As co-founder of the Grammy-winning Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB), McEuen has been continually performing since 1964, making more than 40 albums and appearing on some 25 others. Throughout his 55-year-career, he's earned four platinum and five gold recognition awards, numerous Grammy nominations and wins, CMA and ACM awards and an Emmy nomination. He not only taught legendary comic Steve Martin to play the banjo – but produced Martin's album The Crow which won a 2010 Grammy award. Arguably, McEuen's greatest accomplishment may be his instigation of what Rolling Stone called “The most important record to come out of Nashville” and what a 2004 ZAGAT survey called “the most important record in country music”- NGDB's 1972 album Will the Circle Be Unbroken, which is in the Grammy Hall of Fame as well as The Library of Congress. In our interview, we cover a range of topics – from the transference of musicians to comics as leading cultural political voices to teaching Steve Martin how to play the banjo, meeting his fellow Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founders in McCabe's Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, Calif., his relationship with Grateful Dead founders Garcia and Bob Weir, and we even get a lesson on D-tuned "double thumbing" of the five-string banjo The host of the popular “Acoustic Traveler” show on Sirius/XM's The Village, we also discuss McEuen's newest solo record Made in Brooklyn, which won an Independent Music Award for Best Americana Album of 2017, and his book “The Life I've Picked”. So sit back and enjoy a conversation with a legend: John McEuen.

I did a Frankel-Tele build last summer so I'll tell about that. I posted a video this week as I changed out the original CTS speakers in my 1974 Vibrolux with Celestions. By request, I tell a few short Guitar Shop Stories.
Episode 3 - A Guitar Shop's Guide To…The Gibson Bankruptcy. Nate and Jeremie are joined by Geoff Metts, co-owner of Five Star Guitars, to talk about Gibson's rise and fall and a recent Music Trades interview with Gibson's former CEO hero-turned-villain Henry Juszkiewicz. After some reminiscing on favorite Gibsons, Jeremie and Geoff realize their dream guitars are vintage Gibsons but Nate goes rogue and picks a Tele. Seriously, on a Gibson episode, he picked a Tele. To pull back the curtain on the inner workings of Five Star Guitars, it's revealed that the process for removing the G-Force tuners from 2015 models was internally referred to as the "Gibson Robotomy." Ouch!
Episode 2 - A Guitar Shop's Guide To...Your First Guitar. How do you choose your first guitar? What questions should you ask while trying out new instruments? How do you determine an appropriate amount of money to spend? Nate and Jeremie arm you with the tools to get started on your search to find the right guitar for you. Nate suggests some great models for beginners, and they guys role play a customer/salesperson conversation on finding the right guitar for a young player. What did WE learn? That they have a lot of great advice for parents and first time shoppers, and that they care more about making a musician than making a sale. Also, they suck at fixing cars.
Episode 1: A Guitar Shop's Guide To...Transitions. Nate and Jeremie introduce themselves and kick off the inaugural episode with a talk about what first attracted them to the guitar and what playing music has meant to them over time. How have their musical interests, goals as players, and relationships with the guitar evolved? Jeremie admits he started playing as a selfish endeavor and then goes deep on parenting and spirituality, and Nate opens up about how music has helped him to overcome insecurity. At some point, the guys finally realize that they're both just failed horn players.
