Frankie Vaughan seemed to be constantly present on British Television in 1960s. Mr Moonlight they called him. He had a big voice and a big stage presence, top hat, bow tie and tails. He had many hits during the 1950s and had a brief career in Holywood. Most notably opposite Marilyn Monroe in Lets make Love. Here he gives us The Green door. Lita Rosa- Hernando's Hideaway. Rosa started her stage career at the age of 12. At 24 she was lead female singer with Ted Heath. A strong voice which probably never reached its full potential with the material she was given. Variety is the spice of life on Forgotten Songs. So next up is Tom Wright with Driving into Glasgae in a sour milk cairt. Its billed as traditional on the Beltona label. It's not but was written in 1914 by Tom Johnstone for the comedian J.C macDonald. It's in broad Scots. Two from a F.S favourite, Kay Starr- Too busy and If you love me. Dickie Valentine was a popular crooner in Britain through the 50s. Like many British singers he existed on a diet of American covers. He died in a car crash in 1971. Joan Regan and The Squadronaires give us Ricochet. The Squadronaires were the R.A.F big band. There is some confusion of her birth name and exactly where she was born. Again she did a lot of American covers through the 50s but her U.S recorded version of Don't talk to me of love become a Northern Soul classic. Languishing in the F.S colection has been this piece of US Billbord chart history from Tommy Edwards. It's all in the game was the first number one by an African American in the chart. Released in 1958 it was the biggest hit from this singer- song writer. He sadly died young at 47. Frank Ferera with Beautiful Love. He was a Hawaiian music pioneer. We go all posh with Air on a G string with Norbert Wethmar on violin. The only information I can be certain of about him are two references from The Radio Times in the late 1930s. Two performances with the BBC Orchestra. Florrie Forde was the Australian born grand Dame of British Music hall. Whose career spanned Victorian variety theatre to entertaining the troops in Aberdeen in 1940. She died after the performance, aged 64. Her songs included- Hold out your hand you naughty boy, Down at the old Bull and Bush and I do like to be by the seaside. Here she gives us When we were strolling around town. Maurice Winnick was another Manchester born musical child prodigy. As a teenager he was a band leader on a transatlantic liner. He had a succesful career through the 1930s and 40s. He died in 1960. He plays a lovely version of The Waltz you saved for me. The Platters need no introduction and neither does the song- Smoke gets in your eyes. Okay its not forgotten but how often do you hear it directly from the original 78?

The great Hawaiian slack-key guitarist, George Kahumoku Jr. is on the show this week! George has been playing around the Hawaiian islands for decades, but came to prominence in the 80's and 90's when Dancing Cat records started putting out records by the foremost traditional slack-key players. George was one of the main ones, but we were alo introduced to his brother Moses, Sonny Chillngworth, Keola Beamer, Ledward Ka'apana, Barney Isacs, Cyril Pahanui, and quite a few more. George is one of the greats of the fingerstyle slack-key genre - he grooves, he has an amazing voice, he plays almost exclusively on a 12-string and he has his own F-tuning that suits the style so well. The first part of this interview includes some really interesting Hawaiian history that was mostly news to me, so I hope you enjoy that! George is very active still and plays a weekly show on Maui called Masters of Hawaiian Music. He is also a multiple Grammy award winner, not to mention a celebrated farmer. His latest album is called Rennaisance Man, and he's also going on tour this fall around the western states. You can get all of that info at kahumoku.comListen to the accompanying playlist for this episode here, which features the artist's own music, plus many of the songs that were discussed during the show. This episode is brought to you by Izotope - check out their amazing recording software at: www.izotope.comThanks for your support, and your fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at: www.stevedawson.ca

His latest album, "Pulama: Legacies of Hawaii," is inspired by his heroes from the Hawaiian music renaissance, including George Helm, Gabby "Pops" Pahinui and Dennis Kamakahi. “Practice like you've never won. Perform like you've never lost.”I was recently invited to be a special guest of the https://www.andywangmusic.com/show/masters-of-hawaiian-music/ (Masters of Hawaiian Music in New York City). In the photo above, I'm in the center, seated between 5-time Grammy award winner https://kahumoku.com/ (George Kahumoku, Jr.) and master ‘ukulele instrumentalist https://www.herbohtajr.com/ (Herb Ohta, Jr.) We each played a solo set and then jammed together to close the show. (Play the embedded podcast player at 0:24 to hear a music clip.) Getting on stage is a lot like podcasting. It can force you out of your comfort zone. Playing alongside full-time professional musicians had my imposter syndrome running high too. After the show, a friend asked me, “How much did you practice.” My answer, “By myself? Quite a bit. Together? Not at all.” He responded with a socially distanced high-five. One of the greatest acoustic guitarists of all time, https://tommyemmanuel.com/ (Tommy Emmanuel) once told me to never practice in front of friends or family. “They'll get sick of hearing you play the same song over and over again. Please spare them and preserve their enjoyment of music.” True pros know the value of woodshedding. The term comes from the idea of going out to the “woodshed” in the back yard (or some similar, solitary place), and working at something, over and over again, until it's perfected. Practice with intense repetition by yourself. Then make it look like a breeze in front of people. That's a great trick! ISOLATIONTo perform with these legendary Hawaiian musicians was a dream come true. The universe has a wicked sense of humor though. Cold-like symptoms for one musician led to a positive COVID test. Organizing live events during a pandemic is not for the faint of heart. The tour ended prematurely with a bunch of postponed shows. The CDC says that I do not need to quarantine — just wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure. My family prefers that I not eat with them, prepare food, or wash dishes. I definitely don't miss the dishwashing. As I write this, I'm isolating myself in the basement for the week. https://giphy.com/gifs/southparkgifs-l2SpWTQyOaTnqrHzO (via GIPHY) PRACTICEIt's not all bad. In fact, my man cave has everything that I need. I've got my work from home set up, a TV, workout equipment, a camping mat to sleep on, and en suite bathroom. An air purifier and space heater keep me company. You don't need a potential COVID exposure to practice. We podcasters can woodshed too. AUDIO ENGINEERINGMake time to get better at your DAW My digital audio workstation for editing audio is Reaper. I read a post at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1331712173584193 (Podcast Editors Club) and learned that I can edit video in Reaper too. This blew my mind. Optimizing audio and rendering video in the same program simplifies my workflow and saves me a lot of time. I also learned that I can render an mp3 audio file and mp4 video file at the same time. Thank you Steph Fuccio for the tips. Try new plugins http://imp.i114863.net/x9Z9zd (Izotope RX Elements) is one of my favorites. I use Voice De-noise (reduces background noise) and De-click in almost every episode that I edit. When it's on sale, it's a steal at $20! I like Elements so much that I grabbed a promotion to upgrade to http://imp.i114863.net/15gjox (RX Standard). I frequently use Breath Control and De-Reverb. This week, I was editing an interview with a guest whose laptop mic resulted in harsh, high-frequency S and Sh sounds. A little RX De-ess worked like magic. It was the first time, I've used that plugin. See if woodshedding can make your podcast sound better and improve the overall quality of your show. You might find that you can do things faster too. In the meantime, from my...
In this episode of Nobody Knows Your Story, I visit with Hawaiian music legend, Henry Kapono. We talk about his early years growing up in the shadows of Honolulu, developing a love of music from a church choir and playing lots of sports. But Henry really grew up during a two-year stint in Southeast Asia entertaining the troops playing in a rock band. There's nothing quite like playing on a base in Vietnam with rockets going off, that won't change the way you view life. I'm excited to introduce my listeners to Henry's music, and I've included several of his songs in this episode. If you've spent time in Hawaii, it would be hard to not have heard Henry's music as his career has spanned close to fifty years. Henry first found success as a part of the popular duo Cecilio & Kapono, and later with a successful solo career that has produced 21 albums. Actually, make that 22 as a new compilation CD, “HENRY'S POSITIVE WORLD” comes out today, November 24, 2021. You can check it out, and all of Henry's music at Henrykapono.com.(I snuck in a favorite of mine Na Makua from Henry's album the Wild Hawaiian at the end of the podcast.)

Kelly Boy has toured all over the world spreading that electrifying Kapena music that fans first fell in love with. He is a multiple Na Hoku Hanohano award winner and has come out with over 20 CDs. Kelly Boy has been bringing that feel good island music to the world for over 30 years! He plays throughout Hawaii seven nights a week and he still tours all over the world. Prior to opening the main discussion the host contextualises the current delta variant lockdown that is resulting in an online semester delivery that Dr. Andrea Low is helping out with. There are a couple of examples given of early 20th century commercial representations of the Pacific and issues of skilled performances and musical innovation entangled within race, power, and colonialism. Discussion with Dr. Low begins at 14:16 Curator and ethnomusicologist Andrea Low joins this episode to discuss the invention of the kīkā kila (Hawaiian steel guitar) by La‘ie, Oahu local Joseph Kekuku, as well as her grandfather the ukulele maestro Ernest Ka‘ai, and more. We explore Hawaiian musical inventions, contributions, and global transmission, such as traveling troupes. Early 20th century commercial musical production drew from many sources across various racial and cultural lines, whose marginalised interactions led to crosscurrents of exchange and inspiration. From Mexican/Paniolo/Latin vaqueros (cowboys) arrival in the Kingdom of Hawai‘i, bringing Spanish guitars, to the musicians that emerged after the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani's monarchy, who travelled around the world performing their unique musical styles. The kīkā kila and slack key guitar sounds from Hawai‘i found their way across the region and the world, influencing various Pacific/Moana/Wansolwara musics, delta blues, country western, and more. We end on the ideas of cosmopolitanism during this period and some local adaptations, such as Bill Savesi and the legacy of the orange ballroom in Auckland.

He swept the Hawaiian Music Awards in the late 90's winning Best Performance By A Rhythm & Blues Artist, New Artist of the Year, and Honorable Recognition for his version of the classic song “Crazy Love.” Justin made his directorial debut with the documentary, My Hero's Shadow: From Hitman to Hero, based on the untold story of Shane Stant – the infamous hitman that “clubbed” Nancy Kerrigan. Told from the perspective of his much younger sister Maile, (who was two at the two of the incident) it is a personal story of childhood trauma, the cycle of child abuse, and where it leads.
Podcast Show Notes and Links: https://ukuleleunderground.com/2021/04/finding-the-fun-element-uup9/ This Week, the Team is on the search for the "Fun" Element, and Hawaiian Style. Before they embark on this journey, they start off the podcast with Song Submission reviews. It's part two of defining Hawaiian Music when the guys attempt to explain characteristics of Hawaiian Style. This proves to be just as difficult, and Aldrine goes slightly off track explaining his Ukulele Heroe's Styles. Speaking of heroes, Aldrine makes a special announcement for a future guest, and discusses the new Uke Lending program for Hawaii State Libraries. When a member asks how to get out of a rut, Aldrine and Kahai suggest trying new things, and Aaron suggests being happy with how far you've already improved. UU ties up their advice with recommending looking for the Fun in whatever you do. A "Mad" new songwriting challenge is issued, and the podcast ends with another cliffhanger question.

Frank B Shaner was born and raised in Honolulu, I grew up in Kapahulu around Hawaiian Music. His love for this music, unique to any other in the world, led me to a career in radio, where I have spent over 35 years behind the microphone. He produced the Frank B. Shaner Falsetto Contest for 11 years. All proceeds from these events went to support Aloha Festivals around the State. He also recorded “The Adventures of Leimomi”, a Hawaiian satire of turbulent times in 20th century Hawaiian history. For which received the the Na Hoku Hanohano award for best Comedy Album of the Year. In addition to radio, his other passion is painting. It all began on September 11, 2001, when the World Trade Centers were destroyed. I had been covering the news for hours, and when I left I was beyond exhaustion. For some inexplicable reason, I found myself parked in front of an art supply store. I went in, bought, paints, brushes and canvases, then went home and started painting. And I’ve painted every day since. People ask me if I have a style, but for me, style is a prison and technique a trap. I paint what I feel in my na’au and let it come through in various subjects and mediums. Website: “frankbshanerart.com”

Aloha Everyone,To the best of my knowledge, when it comes to how one chooses to put together a podcast, you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want. This has pretty much always been my approach so, it works well for me.Typically I'm the one asking the questions though I have been on both sides of the mic in the past. Having said this, I really do prefer asking the questions. I want to say thanks to Doug Jardine for agreeing to interview me for my podcast. Whenever we get together, many laughs are shared and it was no different during this exercise. The dudes like a cousin to me. Perhaps it's because, he is a cousin to me. :)Before anyone asks, yes I know I somewhat stayed on the periphery of the subject of Hawai'i. There's a reason. It's because I am planning on doing a Hawai'i In My Life podcast down the road. I did however strategically insert a couple of my favorite Hawai'ian songs in the podcast. In particular, I included my good friend Braddah Ernest Puaa singing a version of White Sandy Beach. This is the song my daughter Tatum asked Ernest to sing as I walked her down the aisle on her wedding day back in 2017. Finally, I just want to thank each of you who listens to what I have to say and invite you to reach out to me if you ever want to talk story. Aloha,Larry

Four-time Grammy award-winning musician talks about how being an entrepreneur and living with ancient Hawaiian values brings him success. Guest Biography There’s a reason he’s been called Hawaii’s Renaissance man: George Kahumoku Jr. is a multiple Grammy Award & Na Hoku Hanohano Award winning master slack key guitarist, songwriter, world-traveling performer, high school teacher, artist and sculptor, story-teller and writer, farmer and entrepreneur. He hosts a weekly show on Maui called George Kahumoku Jr’s Slack Key Show: Masters of Hawaiian Music. George is currently living on Maui with his wife, Nancy, at a beautiful upland farm on the pristine north side of the West Maui Mountains. He recently retired from 40 years of teaching at risk kids, art, ceramics, guitar & ukulele at private and public schools over the years including the historic Lahainaluna High School and directing the inception of the Institute of Hawaiian Music at UH Maui College. Farming being in his blood, George now spends quality time maintaining his 3-acre farm growing fruit and vegetables, dry-land taro (for his famous home-made poi) and tending his goats, chickens, ducks, and miniature horses. True to his Hawaiian heritage, wherever he goes George always brings bundles of fresh produce to share with friends and students. “George Kahumoku, Jr. is one of the great Hawaiian slack key guitarists, as well as a wonderful composer, songwriter, song interpreter, vocalist, and storyteller.” – George Winston “Mr. Kahumoku assumed a natural role as the evening’s host, peppering the show with charming, picaresque stories (“I grew up with 26 cousins in the same household,” went the setup to one of these), and speaking with ease about the origins of the songs. Before singing “I’ll Remember You,” a beloved Hawaiian standard, he recalled his debt to its songwriter, who gave him his first break at age 11. At every turn he got a richly chiming tone from his acoustic guitar and favored a light, easeful flow of rhythm.” – Nate Chinen, New York Times Show notes: http://www.inspiredmoney.fm/079 In this episode, you will learn: Why being an entrepreneur makes you a better musician. Get a glimpse George's morning routine that starts at 3 AM. How Hawaiian values can help you live better in the modern world. Two new movies pay tribute to musical instruments and/or traditions that haven't always gotten their due in mainstream USA. In part one, Tad Nakamura, director of "Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings." It's a moving portrait of the musician who's taken the ukulele—-sometimes wrongly dissed as a novelty instrument—-to virtuosic heights. In part two, Tom Gunderson director of "Mariachi Gringo," the tale of a young man from the midwest who falls in love with Mexico and devotes himself to mariachi music. Lead actor Shawn Ashmore devoted himself to the music too, going to school on vihuela. The film also includes Mexican diva Lila Downs.
