Nile Zacherle of Mad Fritz Beer and Melissa Luci of Alexander Valley Hop Farm join Steve Jaxon and Herlinda Heras on Brew Ha Ha. It's hop season! Mad Fritz Beer is known as a cult brewery, since it is small and has a dedicated following. Mad Fritz is based in Napa. Nile has brought some beer made with fresh wet hops. The hops come from Alexander Valley Hop Farm. Melissa Luci has been on BHH before, on this episode almost exactly a year ago, on Sept. 15, 2023. See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. Alexander Valley Hop Farm is located on a lot that has an unusual shape, it is very long and narrow, but the hops don't mind that. The AV website is small but their Instagram page is great. The plants are trained to crawl up 18 feet of a string made of coconut fiber, that are 15 feet apart. Their goal is to have it reach the top by summer Solstice, so that the branches that produce the cones will mature at the right time. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Brewers can only make wet hopped beers at this time of year at hop harvest time. They have to get the hops from the farm to the brewery as fast as possible. Starting at sunrise, they deliver to the brewer the same day. Nothing is left from this year's harvest! Nile and his wife are partners in the brewery. Their two children Madeleine and Fritz gave Mad Fritz the name. The Ost House IPA is always available at their tap room and brewery. It uses Triumph hops, 100%, grown at AV Hops. They age the beer in neutral French oak, to allow the beer to settle to a clear beer, slowly.

Hello, and welcome to the BeerWise podcast, I'm your host, Mark DeNote, and I am the editor of Florida Beer News.In this episode, I am joined by Nile Zacherle, the President and Master Brewer of Mad Fritz Brewing Company in Saint Helena, California. I was introduced to Nile via one of his beers sent by a friend. The beer was so close to the line between wines and beers that I was intrigued, so I looked up the brewery.  I was able to get some time with Nile to speak about Mad Fritz Brewing and the philosophy of “Origin Beer.” Mad Fritz and their beers, according to Nile, is a reflection of the beer's ingredients, not the recipe. In addition to making the beer, Mad Fritz malts their own barley and sources water from different wells and springs, often close to the brewery. Nile feels that the beer that emerges from this process is a reflection of the land it was grown on and the people who had a hand in making it. You can listen to the podcast online here or on your favorite podcast platform. What do you get if you cross the mindset of a winemaker and the talented hands of a brewer to create a perfect blend of single-origin beers? You get a style-defying, exceptional brewery set deep in the heart of Californian wine country. The beers produced from this farm-style brewery are easy on the palate, but with enough character and nuance to be served in some of the finest restaurants in Napa. Beers like this require a mindset that puts ingredients first with a focus on the land and process. While winemakers often say it takes a lot of beer to make wine, in the case of my next guest, I’d say it takes a lot of wine to make beer like Mad Fritz. While the world demands hazies, IPAs, lagers, and even trendier beverages, there is a lesser-known trend of better beer made in collaboration with the farmers who provide better ingredients. Keep an eye out for beers like this. They may be hard to find, but are worth the effort. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jeremy-storton/message

For episode 100, we’re digging into the archives for choice clips from the first six couples we interviewed: Ryan and Crystal Waugh of Waugh Cellars and Waugh Family Wines. They’re the first interview that made us think, Wow, we need to be a better couple. And during the interview, we swear we watched these two fall in love all over again. Robin & Jim Whitney of Whitney Advertising in Park City, Utah. They met in big New York advertising, and for over 20 years, they’ve been running their ad agency in Park City, and do most of the creative work themselves. They work directly with small business owners—a job that has unimaginable impact on the client. Sam and Mary Giveen of Dr. Sam's Eye Care had dated as teenagers, reconnected at middle age, and she became Director of Operations at his clinic, growing the brand. Mary’s an extravert, Sam is an introvert, and she spends a lot of time making him nervous. Trish and Jared McMillen of McMillen Galleries are landscape photographers who share a brain. They literally spend days together in the wild, preparing to shoot the same photograph. Their gallery is filled with huge, fine-art landscapes that take your breath away. Nile Zacherle and Whitney Fisher run Mad Fritz, the Napa Valley nanobrewery, infusing it with a winemaker sensibility. This is not your dad’s fizzy yellow beer. Linda and Charlie Graves of Athletic Republic. It’s a unique training gym franchise, with over 120 training centers on three continents. They are dynamic and driven and probably in much better shape than you are.

Napa Sonoma Live- The Best Things To See, Sip & Savor

Recognizing that wine isn’t the only beverage crafted in California’s wine country, my co-host Jean-Charles Boisset and I talk about the long history of apple orchards in America, and in particular, in Sonoma County—with the heart of the industry in Sebastopol. We also discuss how his family has a history of hop growing, something Jean-Charles still continues to do with hop trellises at his properties. Today, rather than tasting wine, we sample Boisset’s La Captive Cider, produced in Sonoma. We then taste the Oakville Grocery 1881 Pilsner, made with Boisset estate hops, by one of the guests on this episode Nile Zacherle. This episode is made possible by Oakville Grocery, part of Boisset Collection, a portfolio of wineries and lifestyle destinations with strong historical and family roots. Ethic Cider’s Ned Lawton joins us for our first interview covering his hand-crafted hard ciders from Sebastopol. With a commitment to sustainability, Lawton produces small batches of ciders from his certified organic orchards just north of Sebastopol. Using apples indigenous to the region, Lawton’s ciders range from the Golden Rule, Ethic’s signature orchard blend to the Gravitude, made from heritage varieties, to the limited-release pink-colored Scarlett, infused with blackberries and raspberries. Next up is craft beer, or to be more specific, origin beers with Nile Zacherle, founder and brewmaster of the Mad Fritz craft beer from St. Helena. A winemaker at David Arthur, Zacherle imparts elements of winemaking into his beer making, sourcing the barley, water and even hops from specific local purveyors and areas. Mad Fritz bottle labels alone are works of art, replicating detailed drawings from Aesop’s Fables. With 40 different beers rotating in production at a given time, Zacherle continues to add to his count, creating modern takes on several well known beer styles such as pilsner, imperial rice stout, IPA and saison. Currently, Zacherle is producing a private label pilsner lager for Oakville Grocery. Thanks for listening, and stay tuned for more shows in the coming weeks. EP27: Nile Zacherle created Mad Fritz after 25 years of home brewing. Nile Zacherle first began his journey into fermented beverages in 1990 at the age of 18 when he and his father brewed their first batch of beer at home. What began as a father/son home project continued to evolve until he transitioned his schooling from a focus in art and design to a BS in Fermentation Science at UC Davis. While at UC Davis, Nile completed the Master Brewers program passing the 2 day exam issued by the IOBD (Institute of Brewing and Distilling based in the UK) in 1996.Nile currently makes wine for David Arthur Vineyards on Pritchard Hill in the Napa Valley. Nile's wife Whitney brings a depth of knowledge from the wine industry and business skills while handling all farming operations and general management at Mad Fritz. This was an in depth conversation about Mad Fritz's orgin beers and the creativity that goes into making them. www.madfritz.com Visit at Mad Fritz Tap Room is located at 1282B vidovich Ave in St Helena California @madfritzbrewing

Episode 198 - Nile Zacherle, Mad Fritz Brewing Happy Monday, Thieves! The Rocky Mountain high is kicking in. This week, we've traded our booth at the Lagerhaus in Denver for a dining room table inside a hotel suite in Breckenridge. With the snow whipping around outside, we welcomed Nile Zacherle of Mad Fritz Brewing Co. to the show. Mad Fritz is located in California's Napa Valley... so you can guess what Nile and Augie talked about. Still, we did sneak in some beer conversation, talking about terroir, foraging, and the concept of Origin Beer. John was the awkward third wheel while a new brewer bromace blossomed. Thank goodness for hangovers, because we were able to take the whole show slow, let thoughts develop and the conversation took some fun turns. We're already planning a trip to California to visit Nile. Check out the episode and let us know what you think!**Want to support us? We have launched a PATREON Page.
