Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025. Take a hike! A Fayetteville outfitter offers perks to encourage folks to get out and explore the great outdoors…the WV SBDC launches a program to increase access to affordable childcare in coal counties…and learn how Appalachia got its name (hint: it's a mix of Native American, Spanish and French influence)…on today's daily304. #1 – From WOAY-TV – Got those midwinter blues? Shake it off with a hike in the great outdoors.  Hike three trails a month and receive 10% off a store purchase, plus a free coffee drink from Waterstone Outdoors in Fayetteville. The retail store is just a stone's throw from the New River Gorge National Park, which offers  countless miles of hiking trails and breathtaking scenery.  To help kick off the trail challenge, Waterstone Outdoors has partnered with Active Southern West Virginia to host a free group hike every month. To receive your reward, submit proof of the hike. Waterstone Outdoors is accepting photos from the trailhead, in app trackers and mid-hike photos. Read more: https://woay.com/waterstone-outdoors-issues-trail-challenge/   #2 – From BLUEFIELD DAILY TELEGRAPH – The West Virginia Small Business Development Center has launched a pilot program intended to increase access to affordable child care. The initiative, “Childcare West Virginia: Building the Business that Supports Business,” aims to establish new profitable childcare businesses, help existing childcare providers operate more efficiently and allow employers to recruit and retain workers by offsetting childcare costs. The project is funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission's POWER Initiative and is in partnership with the West Virginia Workforce Resiliency Office and private childcare development firm Wonderschool.  The project area for the pilot program will include eight coal-impacted counties: Boone, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Mason, Putnam, Roane and Wirt. According to legend, the name traces back to early European expeditions.  In 1539, a Spanish expedition under the command of Hernando De Soto came across a Native American tribe near modern day Tallahassee, Florida and named them and the province Apalache (Apalachee) as a derivative of the neighboring tribe of Apalachi. In 1540, De Soto's expedition named the mountainous region of Appalachia after the tribe.  As for naming the mountain range Appalachian, the distinction goes to French artist Jacques le Moyne de Morgues, who travelled in the 1564 French Huguenot expedition of René de Laudonnière. While at the mouth of St. John's River on the Florida coast, Le Moyne painted a scene of natives collecting gold from streams running from the “Apalatcy Mountains.” Read more: https://www.wowktv.com/news/local/how-appalachia-got-its-name/   Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. We met Jeannette MacDougall during an exhibition at Calvin College's (106) Gallery at ArtPrize 2015. In this exhibit "Weighing the Landscape", installed by curator Joel Zwart, Jeanette, Armin and I were hanging next to each other. Our friendship began during that time as we all felt our artwork had a very cohesive aesthetic and professionalism. Jeannette now resides in Texas and continues her travels and artist residencies across the nation and internationally. Her background in being the director in France for the art residency program of the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts has given her the expertise to not only pursue her own residency goals but also advise artist who are looking to pursue that lifestyle in their art practice. She also hosts teaching workshops in the countryside of the south of France and in Scotland. "I am an Artist-Painter on a gypsy sojourn. I seek the solitude of the landscape; content to travel the distance through my work to capture what I long for; a sanctuary in nature. I come away with what I can carry in memory and inspiration." states Jeannette. I am a contemporary artist who works in a multitude of mixed paint mediums. My process culminates in the studio but the joyful inspiration comes from seeking out a piece of the landscape that stops me in my tracks. Like a hunter I observe what is hidden. It is in the underbrush and the dark beauty in nature that appeals to me. Dead limbs, fallen trees are evidence of our impermanence. Perfection is unreal but the imperfect is perfectly beautiful.  I build fresco-like paintings in plaster on birch wood panels which can handle the distress of marred surfaces. The application of various layers and removal of pigment is not unlike an excavation. I search for the undiscovered strata beneath the surface only to leave it be and carefully move on to new ground. Southwest School of Art, San Antonio Texas / Graduate of Parsons School of Art NYC / Trinity University SA Texas  Jeannette's Plein Air Workshop in Roane, France is June 11 - 18. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Sunday, Sept. 3  GreenPower Motor Company revolutionizes the Type A school bus…15 counties are added to West Virginia's Communities in Schools program… and swing into an unforgettable musical adventure when the Spider-man concert experience comes to Charleston…on today's daily304. #1 – From SCHOOL BUS FLEET –  Some manufacturers of the Type A school bus -- workhorse of the special-needs transportation system -- have struggled to meet production demand due to shortages of the chassis used to build the buses.  Fraser Atkinson, CEO of GreenPower Motor Company, noted that his company hasn't been directly affected by the chassis shortage when it comes to production of the Type A Nano BEAST, because it is built on GreenPower's EV Star Cab and chassis, making them their own chassis supplier. “What sets GreenPower apart is that all of our vehicles are purpose-built to be battery-powered with zero-emissions,” Atkinson said.  GreenPower Motor Co. operates a manufacturing facility in South Charleston. “We constantly look for new technologies and ways to improve our vehicles for our customers,” he said. “Most recently, we deployed a version of the Nano BEAST that serves the needs of special education students and children with disabilities by including wheelchair lifts and securements while featuring a flat floor to ensure excellent accessibility.” Read more: https://www.schoolbusfleet.com/10205313/revolutionizing-the-ride-a-closer-look-at-innovating-type-a-school-buses  #2 – From WOAY-TV – Schools in 15 new counties are being added to West Virginia's Communities in Schools program. Communities in Schools build community partnerships and bring resources into schools to prevent student dropout and increase graduation rates, according to State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “Communities In Schools has had a life-changing impact on thousands of students in our state,” Blatt said. “The relationships between site coordinators, schools, students, and families are at the core of this success. These students need support and structures that help them recover from setbacks and regain the confidence to believe they can do great things. Communities in Schools is essential to opening options and pathways for those needing hope and a vision for their future.” The new counties are Barbour, Boone, Cabell, Doddridge, Hancock, Jefferson, Marion, Mason, Mineral, Monongalia, Ohio, Pocahontas, Putnam, Roane, Tucker, Tyler, Wetzel, Wirt, and Wood. In Dark Agoras: Insurgent Black Social Life and the Politics of Place (NYU Press, 2023), author J. T. Roane shows how working-class Black communities cultivated two interdependent modes of insurgent assembly--dark agoras--in twentieth century Philadelphia. He investigates the ways they transposed rural imaginaries about and practices of place as part of their spatial resistances and efforts to contour industrial neighborhoods. In acts that ranged from the mundane acts of refashioning intimate spaces to expressly confrontational and liberatory efforts to transform the city's social and ecological arrangement, these communities challenged the imposition of Progressive and post-Progressive visions for urban order seeking to enclose or displace them. Under the rubric of dark agoras Roane brings together two formulations of collectivity and belonging associated with working-class Black life. While on their surface diametrically opposed, the city's underground--its illicit markets, taverns, pool halls, unlicensed bars, as well as spaces housing illicit sex and informal sites like corners associated with the economically and socially disreputable--constituted a spatial and experiential continuum with the city's set apart--its house meetings, storefronts, temples, and masjid, as well as the extensive spiritually appropriated architectures of the interwar mass movements that included rural land experiments as well as urban housing, hotels, and recreational facilities. Together these sites incubated Black queer urbanism, or dissident visions for urban life challenging dominant urban reform efforts and their modes of producing race, gender, and ultimately the city itself. Roane shows how Black communities built a significant if underappreciated terrain of geographic struggle shaping Philadelphia between the Great Migration and Black Power. This fascinating book will help readers appreciate the importance of Black spatial imaginaries and worldmaking in shaping matters of urban place and politics.
