We're back baby. That's right, Luke and G are reunited for the first official Watts Occurring of 2025. The season starts now. And, of course, there is a lot to catch up on - first and foremost, Sunday's Roubaix. And it was a cracker. Mathieu van der Poel won his third on the bounce (how nuts is that?) and Tadej Pogacar showed the world that one day he could well add it to his palmares. Luke's day was equally eventful and he told G all about his first Paris-Roubaix as a Sport Director. Attention now switches to the Ardennes - and G's eyeing up a final ride at Liege-Bastogne-Liege. What do you reckon: should he do it? Let us know by emailing gtcc@crowdnetwork.co.uk. We'll be back next week with a bumper pod. Want to try NordVPN? Head to https://nordvpn.com/gtcc for a special sign up deal. We're also hosting a retirement party for G at the Millenium Centre in Cardiff on Sunday 16th November! Voices In My Head (the Rick Lee James Podcast) Episode 545: Mark D. Conklin THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK BRINGS SCRIPTURE TO LIFE WITH MUSIC'S TOP NAMES Gloria Gaynor, Rita Wilson, The Fisk Jubilee Singers, Rhonda Vincent and Ernie Haase & Signature Sound Among Star-Studded Guests Uniting a veritable who's who of Gospel, soul and country music luminaries for a uniquely inspired collection of song and spoken word, The Gospel According to Mark is set for release May 17 from StowTown Records. Created by and featuring acclaimed singer/songwriter Mark D. Conklin, the project's 12 standout musical collaborations are interwoven with 12 Scripture vignettes voiced by iconic songstress Gloria Gaynor. Produced by Conklin who also wrote or co-penned each musical selection and GRAMMY winner Mark Prentice, the project offers fresh perspective on the New Testament book of Mark, chronologically conveying the account of Jesus' life, death and resurrection. With Gaynor's narrations anchoring every song, The Gospel According to Mark showcases musical contributions from renowned actress and singer Rita Wilson; internationally revered collegiate ensemble The Fisk Jubilee Singers; Gospel trailblazers The Fairfield Four; the “Queen of Bluegrass” Rhonda Vincent; Southern Gospel leaders Ernie Haase & Signature Sound; GRAMMY-winning recording artist John Berry; and ‘80s country hitmaker T. Graham Brown, among many others. “While serving as the director of the GRAMMY Museum Experience at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, I had the privilege of sitting down with the legendary recording artist Gloria Gaynor in 2020,” Conklin recalls. “After spending time with her album and speaking with her about her unwavering dedication to the Lord, an awakening occurred within me. It ignited a long-dormant desire to embark on my own worship project dream I had put off for years.” “Later, as I edited the audio of my interview with Gloria for a podcast, it hit me like a bolt of lightning,” he adds. “I knew THAT voice, HER voice, was the one! To my great delight and surprise, she graciously agreed to join me on my musical journey, and I will be forever grateful.” “I'm so honored to have been asked to narrate The Gospel According to Mark and lend my voice to such an uplifting project that Mark D. Conklin has brought to life,” Gaynor shares. “To be part of such an amazing gathering of talent to share the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is truly a blessing for me.” The Gospel According to Mark is highlighted by lead single “The Greatest is Love,” which is now available on digital platforms. Featuring acclaimed recording artist Wendy Moten, a runner-up on NBC's “The Voice," the retro rock 'n soul track embodies the nostalgic sounds of Memphis and Muscle Shoals. Additional album standouts include the Rita Wilson spotlight “Through the Storm”; “Oh, Lonely Day,” a stirring Good Friday anthem with vocal contributions from John Berry and Rhonda Vincent; and the soulful “Take This Cup” with The Fairfield Four, an emotive musical rendering of Jesus' struggle in the Garden of Gethsemane. Conklin has also authored an exclusive devotional companion for The Gospel According to Mark. Unpacking scripturally-rooted insight behind each of the album's 12 songs, the devotions present encouragement for daily living, reflective questions and directed prayers. ABOUT MARK D. Faster cars, faster internet, faster technology and faster results…do you ever feel like you're running on a clock going at 100X speed, or like you're on a treadmill running on the fastest setting? That's the culture we're living in…it's more acceleration, less appreciation. More pushing than presence. Here's the problem: when we focus on speeding up, any sense of connection and presence disappears. Adrenaline is addictive, it's like having Hershey bars as your only source of nourishment. And yes, shifting to another fuel source is a project, but it is worthwhile. We get to not only exist in the present, but actually savor it deliciously. So how do we slow down, connect and just be, instead of running so fast that we run ahead of ourselves? In this episode, we talk about how to start moving at the pace of essence, not acceleration. Adrenaline is more addictive than any drug scientists have yet invented. It's an imperative project to shift to a new fuel source. -Katie Hendricks Three Things You'll Learn In This Episode: - Forget what's next…what's here and now? When we're so focused on driving forward, on achieving or buying the next thing, what gets lost in the process? - Nourishing Energy vs. Explosion Real energy feels different to the explosion of adrenaline. How do we tell if we're in a nervous system hijack instead of our own essence? - How to leave the Accelerator Culture behind We don't realize the damage of using adrenaline as our constant fuel source. How do we shift to a better fuel source? After a horrific Hamas terrorist attack, Israel is at war. We talk about the current conflict, trying to give context for "both sides" and examining issues like: how progressives are responding in the US, the role of religion and apocalypticism, how this situation is different from others involving aggrieved people groups (civil rights movement, apartheid, etc.) and more.Andy Stanley is causing controversy once again after his Unconditional conference, which struck many as "too affirming" on LGBTQ issues. We discuss and go deep on the broader topic, how optics and truth relate re: the faith and evangelism, whether LGBTQ issues in the church could rightly be "don't ask, don't tell," how our own views have evolved, etc.We also do a bit of general pop culture riffing, involving Calvin & Hobbes, Metallica and the Detroit Lions : )(The podcast Matt was thinking of that discussed C.S. A recent controversial article about sex gets pulled from The Gospel Coalition... Why is it that talking about this topic can be so difficult for the church? We take an in-depth look at the article "Sex Won't Save You (But It Points to the One Who Will)" by Josh Butler, and then use it as a springboard to discuss touchy topics surrounding sex and a Christian view of sex in general. We also dig into some recent pop culture faves: Minecraft, Hogwarts Legacy and HBO's The Last of Us. Church attendance continues to decline, yet new research from Barna indicates that Americans are more spiritually open than ever. So it's 2023. What's new? Nothing, really. Well, except one thing. What is it? What's actually, really, truly new? Find out in this mindbogglingly exiting, fast-paced Season 5 opener.Topics covered include: McCarthy and the same-old political divisions; how Jesus offers a third way vis-a-vis divisions; how to not let the culture wars steal our joy (a la Trevin Wax) because we're "citizens of Heaven and fight Mordor with the joy of the Shire in our hearts" (a la Tolkien - happy bday, professor!); btw that's at least two French phrases used so far in this description (oui oui!); rewatching Mad Men and the providential, still-small-voice moment involving "The Door" where you can discover the actually, really, truly new thing (spoiler, it involves the gospel and Jesus and all that, as per usual w this podcast :) ); the new Avatar and how some movies really change things; probably other topics come up in there as well, but who's to say really? listen and find out I guess.Come along for Your Sunday Drive - quick conversation about current events, politics, pop culture and more, from the perspective of a couple of guys trying to follow Jesus.Hosts: Matt Hill and Nate Polzin. Big Sky Astrology on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube Timestamps [1:08] Mercury (29°3' Sagittarius) squares Jupiter in Pisces on December 5th at 11:05 pm PST. Mercury is on the Sabian symbol 30 Sagittarius, The Pope and Jupiter is on 30 Pisces, The Great Stone Face. See if you can find a way to integrate the image you present and what you may be growing into internally. [2:38] Mercury enters Capricorn on December 6th at 2:08 pm PST and will be in this sign until February 11, 2023. Mercury's extended stay in Capricorn is due to its retrograde period (Dec. 29, 2022-Jan. 18, 2023). Use Capricorn's steadfast focus on a project that you've been wanting to complete, but leave room for variations to occur. [3:43] Moon Report! The Gemini Full Moon is on December 7th at 8:08 pm PST, at 16°01' Gemini. This Full Moon illuminates the intentions we may have set during the New Moon at 9° Gemini on May 30, 2022. This is also the Full Moon of the Lunar Phase Family that began on June 10, 2021 at 19°47' Gemini. (If you need help finding the Gemini area of your natal chart, April's instructional blog post and video might help.) [7:12] This Gemini Full Moon will closely conjoin Mars (Gemini 16°07'). Look out for relational conflicts that may ultimately prove helpful. The Sun, Moon and Mars also apply to a square to Neptune at 22°39' Pisces. It's time to take off those Neptunian rose-colored glasses and face the music. [10:02] Void-of-Course Moon periods (VOC). On December 6th, the Moon (Taurus 29°04') sextiles Jupiter at 11:02 am PST. It will be VOC for almost two hours before entering Gemini at 12:49 pm PST. Albeit brief, this lovely aspect would be an excellent time to give form to your big ideas. [11:05] The Moon (Gemini 29°11) squares Jupiter in Pisces on December 8th at 10:13 pm PST. The Moon will be VOC for just about an hour and a half before it enters Cancer at 11:49 pm PST. This combination might behave like Mercury is retrograde, so back up your devices! [11:50] On December 11th at 10:49 am PST, the Moon at 29°20' Cancer trines Jupiter in Pisces. This short but sweet VOC period will last just a little under an hour and a half before the Moon enters Leeeeeooooo at 12:09 pm PST. Bring on those snuggly, domestic bliss vibes. [12:42] The Sun makes its exact opposition to Mars on December 7th at 9:42 pm PST at 16°5' of Sagittarius and Gemini. This is an important point in the Sun-Mars cycle that began with their conjunction in October of 2021. Take note of the changes you've seen and lessons you have learned. [14:16] On December 9th, Venus (Sagittarius 29°12') squares Jupiter in Pisces at 4:55 am PST. Later that day, Venus enters Capricorn at 7:54 pm PST, echoing Mercury's transits from earlier in the week. What can you create during this last month of 2022 to leave this year feeling happier and better prepared for 2023? How should we be reacting? In a sad season of far too many mass shootings, we discuss details of the incidents, their complex causes, related political and cultural issues, possible solutions, and more. How may our overall crisis of meaning be leading to a crisis of gun violence? What role does the church play?Nostalgia rears its head yet again, as Top Gun: Maverick rules at the box office, while Stranger Things 4 and Obi Wan Kenobi take over streaming platforms. We talk about these stories, the positives and negatives of nostalgia, and why *now* might be such a fertile time for the familiar to find favor. Have you ever wondered "Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid" ? We attempt to give an answer by looking at a popular Atlantic article with that title from cultural commentator Jonathan Haidt. Points of discussion include social media, its influence and some possible ways to curtail its negative effects.Sure... social media is a problem and has amplified our fragmentation, like languages at the Tower of Babel, but isn't there a deeper issue? Yes - what's currently being discussed as "The Meaning Crisis" by a growing number of voices, such as Jordan Peterson, Bret Weinstein, Jonathan Vervaeke, Paul Vander Klay, Johnathan Pageau, Tim DeRoche and others. We look at this current moment, try to unpack some of its causes and history, and ultimately contextualize it with the Christian faith.Popular (and excellent) show This Is Us reaches its final few episodes and Nate has thoughts. What does our current pop culture have to say about things like love and marriage? How should a Christian respond when non-Christian ideas about such topics are presented and even celebrated in our pop culture? With Russia's invasion of Ukraine, there is war in Europe. We discuss the current crisis, asking questions such as: How should Christians think about war and physical conflict in general? Is pacifism the right way? Is there ever a time to *not* "turn the other cheek?" What is it about such times that evokes powerful ideas about good and evil, heroes and villains? What deep truth lies behind these conflict-borne intuitions? We also take a moment for the pop cultural pulse, quickly covering The Batman, Elden Ring and In Search of a Kingdom. Paid In Full, 1991 - present, a Gospel Trio from New Albany, Ms., will be the featured artists this week on The Gospel Jubilee.Listen to the Gospel Jubilee on your Echo device by saying, Alexa, play the Gospel Jubilee on Apple podcast.Or go to: https://api.spreaker.com/v2/episodes/48584733/download.mp3Paid In Full began their professional ministry while still in high school, singing in area revivals and camp meetings. Soon they were singing three nights a week all over the South, and were appearing in concert with some of Gospel music's finest artists, including The Gaither Vocal Band, The Happy Goodmans, The Martins, The Cathedrals, and the legendary Jake Hess. Jake first heard them in 1996, and immediately took Paid In Full under his musical wing, bringing them to his home church in Georgia for a concert, and introducing them to industry leaders and many of today's top Gospel musicians.Soon they were appearing in Gaither Homecoming Concerts all over the country as well as in such prestigious showcases as “Howard and Vestal Goodman and Friends” and “The Grand Ole Gospel Reunion.” They were performing in venues which are usually reserved for Gospel artists with much more experience and a longer list of credentials than such a young group can claim. As musical ambassadors since 1991, Paid In Full has been privileged to sing in churches with diverse denominational identities and has been widely accepted by each congregation. Celebrating what all Christians have in common, Paid In Full has worked to unify the body of Christ. As Southern Baptists, Paid In Full has been equally accepted by their own denomination. They have appeared at numerous LifeWay events and conventions as well as evangelism and pastors' conferences across the country. They have also sung in some of the nation's largest Baptist churches, including Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tennessee, and First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi.Utilizing the talents of renowned Nashville producers Woody Wright and Michael Sykes, Paid In Full has released six major recordings, including four original Gospel projects, a Christmas collection, and an acoustic recording of hymns and favorites. Some of the industry's finest song writers have contributed their best original tunes to the group, helping Paid In Full produce over 10 Top 80 hit songs, as well as rave reviews from Gospel Music peers, press, and fans from all over the United States. Now, more than ever, Paid In Full is focused on presenting the Gospel of Christ through music. On television, in large metropolitan churches, or in small country churches, the mission is the same: share what Jesus Christ has done in their lives, and what he can do in the lives of every human being who will allow it. This is the message Paid In Full wants to deliver in their concerts and recorded music.Today's group members: Brock White, tenor, Lance Moore, lead, Bradley Littlejohn, baritone.
