The American three-tier distribution system can be a bit of a confusing beast to comprehend, with different rules in each state and more variances than any individual human could ever remember. Good friend of the show Kevin Abbott of Barrel of Monks in Boca Raton, FL joined Cee for a deep dive into the three-tier system and how it works, why they decided to close Odd Breed Wild Ales, why so many breweries are closing in Florida, why it's so tough to make money in the beer industry, how distributors split up territories and why their contracts are for life in Florida, how to select the best retailers and licensees for your brand, and why making great beer just isn't enough. They got into two boozy gems from Barrel of Monks - Trip Sitter Barrel-Aged Barleywine (from their 7th anniversary) and Parade of Souls Imperial Stout. This was packed with jewels - enjoy!   BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

One of our most watched videos on YouTube is about the life of a craft beer sales rep, and strangely it's something we've never explored at length on the podcast before. Micah Overton of Lilypad, a "CRM crafted for beverage suppliers and distributors to stay organized and sell more liquid", joins Cee to talk about a day in the life of a beer sales rep, the difference between self-distributing and having distributor partners, how a sales rep decides where to go every day, how to approach current or potential clients, his experience with wholesalers, the pros and cons of the 3-tier system, some fun stories from his days as a sales rep, and why and how technology can help beer sales teams do their job. Micah provided some killer Florida brews for the session - BarrieHaus Beer Co. Bublina Czech-style Pilsner, Angry Chair Vodnik Czech-inspired Pilsner, Coppertail Hop Quest Cold IPA, and Hidden Springs Ale Works A Hot Dog Is Most Definitely A Sandwich. This was fascinating - cheers!   BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

We made it through the holiday weekend unscathed and are almost done with this short work week.  Nice.On this week's show we recap Brian and Nate's trips to Florida and the beer they got into on their travels.  Smalls and I stayed here but Smalls threw a party so we had some grilled meats and beers with friends and then I binged the rest of Ted Lasso.I sip on a new Scofflaw brew called Hop Shatter.  Here's what the brewery has to say about the beer.Originally brewed for the 2023 Craft Brewers Conference, this potent IPA showcase CGX Cryogenic Lupulin Pellets, jam-packed with resins and oils for Flavor and Aroma and less environmental impact and production waste. Featuring Motueka CGX, Amarillo CGX, and Cashmere T-90 for notes of zesty citrus, with a touch of floral, white grape, and fresh berries.Interesting. Very tasty beer, too.We discuss Sima, also known as Finnish Spring Mead.  It's a very low alcohol beverage brewed for May Day festival, known as Vappu in Finland.  Brian tried a commercial take on the style this weekend but it's also a very easy one to brew at home.A bill is up to allow shipping alcohol by USPS.  We won't get too excited for that just yet as it's been talked about before, but we'll see.  Brewers are buying their breweries back from Big Beer.  Quite the turn of events, I wonder if we'll see more of it?And the monks are really sick of people reselling their beer and they're cracking down.  If you go to the Netherlands and buy a Trappist ale at a convenience store don't be surprised when a bunch of guys in robes come after you.  You've been warned. The Beers of the Week are....Deadwords Brewing - Timberline Pacific Northwest IPABeer Zombies - Zombie Duck Hunter (WC IPA)J. Florida craft beer is buzzing right now, and one of the hottest breweries in the south is Doral, FL's Tripping Animals. Founded by a quad of Venezuelan homebrewers in 2018, Daniel Chocron, Ignacio Montenegro, Iker Elorriaga, and Juan-Manuel Torres, the brewery has become a destination for hype-chasers and, generally, lovers of fire craft beer. Cee hung out with Juan-Manuel to chat about their humble South American origins, their approach to beer and how that changed over time, the help they received from their community, why they chose Doral (30 mins west of Miami), the styles that they're renowned for, their Irie Jungle festival, and their killer barrel program. They crushed their Cooler Than A Polar Bear's Toenails Lager, Dark No Mames Mexican Lager, Ever Haze NEIPA, Daytripping Double IPA collab with Other Half, and Twisted Sail smoothie sour. The Tampa Bay beer scene is among the country's most exciting. I've visited the Tampa - St. Pete region at least once a year for most of my life. It's where my family vacationed during spring breaks and it's where my folks retired. So as I grew up and started getting interested in craft beer, I naturally used my trips to Florida to explore the local Tampa Bay beer scene. I'd sneak away to check out the local bars and liquor stores in search of something interesting. And in the early days, it was pretty bleak. I'd be excited to find Yuengling or Michelob Amber Bock in the local Publix or some dusty craft beer bottles in some seedy convenience store. I was excited when I found Ybor City Brewing Company. But progress was slow. Until it wasn't. Tampa Bay is now one of the country's liveliest places for beer, representing an eclectic array of producers of everything from classic wheat beers and easy drinking IPAs to monster barrel aged stouts. So I'm excited this week to sit down with two gentlemen who possess an impressive trove of information and insights into the Tampa Bay beer scene. Sean Norquist is the executive Director of the Florida Brewers Guild, a role he has had since 2017. He is responsible for growing membership, coordinating events (including the excellent annual conference that I attended a few years back, as well as representing breweries and their interests before the state legislature in Tallahassee. Before taking on that role, he was a beer writer and also helped run Tampa Bay Beer Week.Mark DeNote is a freelance beer writer and communicator who runs Florida Beer News, a site dedicated to the state's emerging craft breweries, thriving breweries, and the craft beer history of Florida. Mark is also the author of two books about Florida craft beer, The Great Florida Craft Beer Guide and Tampa Bay Beer: A Heady History. This Episode is Sponsored by:Pub Culture BeercationsStop living vicariously through other people's social media posts and get out and make some memories of your own! It was a fortunate coincidence that I had my recorder handy during August's Florida Brewers Guild Conference, as both men were in attendance and had some time to sit down and talk about their journeys as brewers and record some of the names of brewers who have come and gone from Florida breweries. Ron and Madison talk about what it was like sharing information between breweries before email and the internet and other differences between their start in brewing and their current state of affairs.Ron Raike is the brewmaster at Playalinda Brewing Company and Madison Roane is the Vice President of Production at Florida Avenue Brewing Company. The two brewers have each been brewing beer professionally in the Sunshine State since the 1990s and have traveled worked with and worked for many other brewers and breweries in Florida History. Ron began his career brewing in the Orlando area, including a stint at what may have been the first airport brewery that brewed beer onsite at an airport - the Shipyard Brewpub in Orlando International Airport - and has transitioned between several breweries to his present position at Playalinda Brewing. Madison began brewing at McGuire's Brewpub in Destin and "followed a girl down to Tampa" and worked at Cigar City Brewing for years until transitioning to his current position at Florida Avenue Brewing in Wesley Chapel. The initial interview was Ron's idea - except this was before COVID, and it took several years to get both of these guys in the same room.  The interview is worth a listen if only for the banter about hard seltzer and milkshake IPAs.You can listen to the podcast online here, or on your favorite podcast platform. In this episode, I am joined by Dave Doble of Tampa Bay Brewing Company. One of Tampa Bay's iconic and well-visited breweries, Tampa Bay Brewing Company is celebrating 25 years in July 2022. Visited by both Michael Jackson and Guy Fieri, many visitors know TBBC for its welcoming pubs in both Ybor City and Westchase. In the mid-1990s, the City of Tampa did not have many options for craft beer until John and Vicki Doble put their faith in their son Johnny's vision of opening a homebrew store called the Brew Shack. Johnny and his family grew that store into a brewpub and one of Tampa's first ‘destination' breweries. Once the pub opened, Johnny was the head brewer and Dave Doble left the family business to train as a pilot. Dave talks about when his brother tragically died in a fire in 2003, how he decided return to the brewery his family had founded. In our interview, Dave talks about that return and how he and his family decided to grow TBBC's business to its current heights. Dave also talks about changing the TBBC beer lineup and how the brewery's growth has been helped by Reef Donkey, a GABF Bronze-medal winning pale ale named for the Amberjack, a game fish which lives in Florida's wrecks and reefs. You can listen to the podcast here, or on your favorite podcast platform. Prison Pals Brewing makes a break for it in Miami In 2018 Argentinian businessman and race car driver Juan Pipkin was dreaming of starting a business in America.  He'd grown tired of the challenges in his home country and feeling like a prisoner in his own land.  After some consideration he decided craft beer was the goal.  Pipkin admits he had zero background in beer before the idea for Prison Pals Brewing started, but he saw a great opportunity and he knew how to put a powerhouse team together. Pipkin reached out to Diego Setti and Bruno Laperchuck to join him on the adventure and the duo joined as Brewmaster and Head Brewer/Lab Manager to open their brewery in Miami.  Originally, the plan was to operate much like breweries in Argentina - skipping the taproom and brewing beer to send out to bars and restaurants in distribution.  Prison Pals started under that model but quickly realized a taproom was the key to success for American craft beer.  Now they have two, with more on the way. Setti brings an impressive list of credentials to the team.  He's a BJCP Beer Judge and has served as the Latin America Regional Representative and Associate Director since 2019, a Certified Cicerone, Doemens Akademie Biersommelier, and started Zeta Atelier de Cervezas (a beer education institute) and Mental Brewing Co., a gypsy brewery only brewing historical beer styles.  Deep breath... And, he's participated in major competitions such was the World Beer Cup, Great American Beer Festival, and Brussels Beer Challenge.  Whew. Don't fight the Smoothie hype Given his choice, Setti would stick to brewing classic beer styles and exploring his love of lagers.  When he was first asked him to brew a Smoothie beer he responded with an emphatic, "No."  Prison Pals now has a line of Smoothie beers with plenty of hazy IPAs and heavily fruited sours in the lineup.  You gotta give the people what they want, Diego. We also learn a bit about the craft beer scene in Argentina.  The most popular style is Honey Beer, typically a Blonde Ale with honey, it's the beer that pays the bills for most breweries.  Argentinian brewers struggle to get imported ingredients and have to rely on limited availability of malts and yeast.  Of course, as it goes with craft brewers, this brings in a lot of creativity to get the styles they want.  Setti tells us the quality is still top notch and they are starting to see some growth in domestically available ingredients. Due to time, we had to cut some info on what's next for the brewery.  Pipkin tells us they'll open more taprooms offering their beers and some tasty eats, brew more beer, and expand distribution.  Things are just getting started for Prison Pals.
