With the recent release of Deathloop, it only makes sense for the Revival Club to look back at the games that helped shape Arkane as the respected development studio that it is today. We went back to 2006 to take a look at a game that feels distinct from the games that define the studio today (Dishonored, Prey, etc). Of course, that game is Dark Messiah of Might & Magic; a game that is full of high-fantasy tropes like orcs, mages, and demons yet still full of that signature Arkane DNA! For this discussion, Nick is joined by recurring Revival Club guests, Steve and Green.

We're pushing back our Halloween game a few week so we can get our latest obsession onto the pod: DEATHLOOOOOP! Definitely enjoying this latest hit from Arkane, so hopefully you get a chance to play it for a bit.  After the intros, Jason lead us through development (7:15), before we get into a LOT of the gameplay (19:30), and finally get deeeep into spoilers (1:10:30). For an episode with so much Deathloop talk, you would think it would have inspired the episode title... but Chris Davis threw that out the window when he let his enthusiasm for I Am Fish bubble over... In the 2nd segment, we talk Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Bonfire Peaks, and of course, the big news dump from the latest Nintendo Direct! You know the one...

After getting a taste last week, both myself and Matthew have spent the last few days in Blackreef. We've been enjoying doing the same things over and over. Yeah, Deathloop is pretty good.   Before we chat about our looping adventures in Arkane's FPS, we discuss the recently leaked Nvidia GeForce Now list. You're not going to win any prizes for guessing that some of these games will come to PC, but the prospect of others is a little bit more exciting. I mean, I know I could really go for some Titanfall 3. But, it is all pure speculation at this point. But, everyone loves a bit of that, anyway, don't they?   For the second week in a row, the game that makes up the majority of our conversation is Deathloop. We've both played it now and mostly agree it is a belter. There are a few minor caveats, but overall it's one you should definitely make time for. Also, I've been playing Kena: Bridge Of Spirits. And, yeah, The Rot are definitely the highlight.   This week's Mystery Steam Reviews focuses on video games with robot protagonists. And we round out the show by opening The Weekspot mailbag to answer your Burning Questions on comfort food, games we replay, and fursonas.   00:00 Intro 08:13 Information Snacks For Your News Gobs 17:51 Titanfall 3, God Of War, and the leaked GeForce Now list 32:43 Sir Clive Sinclair of ZX Spectrum fame passed away 36:43 Deathloop Review 1:04:33 Kena: Bridge Of Spirits Review 1:19:59 Mystery Steam Reviews 1:46:52 Burning Questions

With the big event unofficially kicking off next week with Summer Gamesfest's Kickoff Live, I think it's time to delve into just what we may be able to expect from Xbox's big showing. This week, we lay out our thoughts and predictions about what we could possibly see from Microsoft at Xbox & Bethesda's joint E3 showcase. Will 343 Industries turn the tide in Halo Infinite's favor in regards to the negative feedback it received from its initial gameplay reveal last year? Will Starfield control Bethesda's time slot, or will we see other projects emerge from their umbrella, such as Arkane's rumored project “Omen”? We set the stage for Xbox's return to E3 and much more on the newest jam-packed episode of the Game Pass Gamecast! The "T"’s have been crossed, the "I"’s have been dotted, the ink is dry, which means it’s official: Microsoft has officially finalized their purchase ZeniMax, and in turn Bethesda. So now that one of gaming’s most popular entities is within the Xbox fold, the biggest question remains: What’s next? This week, we explore the acquisition of Bethesda, and with it now finalized, what the future truly can look like with the Rockville, MD publisher & developer, and not to mention their long list of subsidiaries including iD Software, Arkane, MachineGames, and more. When do we expect to see the full backlog of Bethesda titles on Game Pass? Do we envision Bethesda maintaining their identity and have the look of a stand alone figure even now in an acquired position, and of course, the biggest elephant in the room: What franchises did Phil Spenser mean by saying “some” Bethesda titles will be exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem? Plus, Overwatch is getting some serious next gen upgrades for the Series X & S, your original Diablo 2 saves may be coming with you to the new Diablo 2: Resurrected, and much more coming up on the newest episode of the Game Pass Gamecast! It's Official! Microsoft is now the proud owners of a bouncing baby Bethesda (or more precisely it's parent Zenimax, but that confuses the metaphor). Now that things are actually closed (and $7.5B has changed hands), Microsoft can get to the hard work of figuring out just exactly what they are going to do with the likes of Starfield, Elder Scrolls, Arkane, and the rest. Today on the Fix, police are saying "welcome to the Gulag" to a prison escapee who has been captured after trying to purchase the latest Call of Duty. The person in question had been on the run since November, in the UK. He was apprehended while picking up CoD: Black Ops Cold War, in an effort to curb his lockdown boredom. Xbox's Director of Program Management, Jason Ronald, has made clear that unannounced Xbox games are coming in 2021. We still don't know just where those games will be coming from, and if they will be released by some of the studios acquired by Microsoft. Speaking of Microsoft's recent acquisitions, The Microsoft-Bethesda acquisition has taken very large steps towards completion with the SEC and European Commission approving the move. This doesn't mean the merger is final, however, but once Microsoft clears the next steps, Bethesda Game Studios, Arkane, MachineGames, Tango GameWorks, and more will fall under the Microsoft banner.

Keith Thomas is Denver-based a screenwriter and director whose horror feature, The Vigil, was released on February 26 by IFC Films. Starring Dave Davis, The Vigil is about a man providing overnight watch to a deceased member of his former Orthodox Jewish community, who encounters a malevolent entity. After Stephen King saw The Vigil, he approved Keith to direct a remake of King’s 1984 horror film, Firestarter, which will begin shooting this year.  What you will learn: What inspired Keith to write The Vigil.  How his previous career as a medical researcher in nursing homes informed his narratives in both his short film, Arkane, and The Vigil.  How witnessing a hate crime in real life inspired Keith to write a particular scene in The Vigil.  How a very specific world or community with a defined set of rules (like the Hasidic Jewish community in Brooklyn, where this movie is set), can make for a compelling setting in a horror movie. Why Keith rejected an offer to buy the screenplay for The Vigil, instead choosing to direct it on his own.  Why he cast Dave Davis as the lead and what previous roles Davis played that convinced Keith he was right for the part.   How making his short film Arkane, which is still available on YouTube, opened the door to making The Vigil.  How aspiring filmmakers can make short films to open similar opportunities.  Why aspiring filmmakers should NOT take the path taken by Keith into film.   Why a remake of Stephen King’s Firestarter is the perfect classic horror film for him to direct.  Resources:   Keith Thomas’ IMDB IFC Midnight Website for The Vigil Arkane short

We've covered the lead-up to PlayStation 5 on this podcast from every conceivable angle. In reality, there wasn't much of importance left to say, aside from idle speculation and over-analysis. Yet, the time has indeed come: PS5 is finally here, and now that we've gotten our hands on our consoles and spent time with some games, it's safe to assume we're not gonna run out of things to talk about on this show for years to come. The first 90 (!) minutes of this show are dedicated to our impressions of Sony's new console, along with thoughts on games ranging from Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Astro's Playroom to Demon's Souls Remake and Bugsnax. But of course, there's news to tend to as well. Sucker Punch has scored a commercial hit with Ghost of Tsushima, while Crystal Dynamics' Avengers game has cost Square Enix tens of millions of dollars in losses. We now have a better idea of when we can expect PS5's second wave of exclusives, including Ratchet & Clank: A Rift Apart and Horizon: Forbidden West, while a timed third party exclusive in the form of Arkane's Deathloop has been given a more specific release date. Plus: More! But at the end of the day, it all falls back to PlayStation 5. So let's enjoy the moment together, shall we? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
