You can tell it is spring when the Ospreys return to the Chesapeake Bay. And you can tell it is summer when Bands in the Sand takes over the beach at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation! We took the opportunity to record this podcast in the Merganser Room at the Foundation while watching the Osprey swoop and dive for food as they rebuild their nests. We also took the chance to look out to where THE party will be held on June 14th! Hilary Harp Falk, the President of CBF, joined me along with Billy Sadtler, the GM of Presenting Sponsor, Annapolis Subaru, to talk about the event, but equally important, the why. Annapolis Subaru has been the Presenting Sponsor since the event's inception, and cimulatively, Bands in the Sand has raised more than $5.5 million to help protect and preserve the Bay we all hold so dearly. Education and advocacy are the names of the game, especially in the current environment. Thousands of children (and adults) take part in learning about the ecosystem and the Bay in general each year. Thousands of hours are volunteered every year to keep up the fantastic work CBF has done for 60 years. And helping is not that hard. Volunteer, become a member, donate, or simply be more mindful at home. But as for that party on June 14th.... headlining is none other than Sister Hazel along with Tony Roy and Yawd Lynk(fantastic reggae band) and perpetual crowd favorite Misspent Youth to close out the night! On top of the entertainment included with your ticket is sand between your toes (and after this winter, we ALL need that), along with unlimited food from the Boatyard Bar & Grill, Caliente Grill, Timber Pizza, The Bell House Catering, and Always Ice Cream. Need an oyster fix? Head to The Choptank's Oyster Reef! And to wash it all down, your selection of water, sodas, beers, wines, and ready-to-drink cocktails from Katcef Brothers! It is truly an all-inclusive evening- even down to the free parking and free shuttle to take you to the beach! With Earth Day coming up, it is a perfect time to secure your tickets and celebrate Earth Day by supporting the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. All tickets purchased prior to May 1st are discounted to $25! But enough of this... Have a listen! This week, to celebrate the 100th episode of My Weekly Mixtape, I am creating "The Ultimate Mixtape" along with 65 guest curators, all of which were either previous My Weekly Mixtape guests, friends of the show or one of the amazing Patreon Mixtapers. And, because I simply couldn't celebrate 100 episodes in one sitting, this week will consist of three brand-new episodes!  Now, to create this Ultimate Mixtape, I started by asking these 65 different people the same question: If you had to choose one song for the ultimate mixtape (any song / any genre), that would be locked away in a time capsule for others to discover years or decades for now…which song would you choose and why? Now, I'm not lost on the fact that the question is just a spin on the “desert island song” question that a lot of my guests have been asked countless times. The twist for the next few episodes is: I am taking those 65 song choices (all of which are from various bands, artists, decades, genres and tempos), and curating them into what I hope will be a properly sequenced playlist from a musical perspective!  At the very least? This was a fun & unique twist on a question as old as interviews themselves. But at its best? Congratulations, you're listening to The Ultimate Mixtape!!  Guests appearing in Vol. 1 (in no particular order): Robin Wilson of Gin Blossoms, Jim Loughlin of moe., Drew Copeland of Sister Hazel, Don Jamieson of RockStrap & VH1's That Metal Show, Coco Kinnon of Winona Fighter, Bryan Scott of Union Underground, Britt Lightning of Vixen, Sandy MacKinnon of Royal Tusk, Christian Swain of Rock & Roll Archaeology / Pantheon Podcasts, Joe Milliken, Author of “Let's Go! Benjamin Orr & The Cars”, DT Carel of SpaceCastle, Ed Cunard of Fawkes & Friends, Steve of Something For Nothing: A Rush Fancast, Zack Derby of NeatCast, Ben Montgomery of Records Revisited Podcast, Matt Kennedy of XRadioX, Tony G. of Podioslave, Miles Schuman of Rock Camp: The Podcast, and last (but certainly not least!) two of the incredible Patreon Mixtapers: Seeker & Tom Hutchinson. Be sure to visit MyWeeklyMixtape.com to hear all of the songs we discussed in this episode, and join the My Weekly Mixtape Discord Server via the link on the episode page! Rock Boat Lineup Reveal and Artist InsightsLet's all get lost in the Jungle together…Join us in this TRB XXIV preview, recorded in sea-cret from an undisclosed location on-board the Norwegian Pearl. This episode is a real treat as we sit down with Sixthman Jen, Trae Vedder, and Sister Hazel's Ken Block to reveal the incredible lineup for the next Rock Boat and share some behind-the-scenes insights into the event's planning and artist dynamics.SummaryWe kick off the episode reminiscing highlights of TRB XXIII, where artists and fans alike built lasting memories over the span of a few magical days. An annual highlight for many is the Sixthman Sessions at Sea. Camaraderie and music created during these sessions have left an indelible mark on the artists and those privileged to witness the live performance. Our conversation then shifts to the Positivity Jam, led by the incomparable Brian Fechino. Termed the hidden gem of the Rock Boat,we spotlight this incredible late-night jam session, which sees a majority of the artists on the boat come together in a unique display of collective energy and spirit. We also touch on the Rock Boat Family - a community that is fostered between boats through the event's social platforms and the many “ripples” of TRB. The episode takes a moment to send love to Twigger from Gaelic Storm, emphasizing the support and unity within the TRB Family. As we dive into the lineup reveal, we share our excitement for the return of familiar favorites and the introduction of fresh faces. We discuss the careful curation process, aiming to balance the lineup with a mix of genres and vibes to cater to all tastes. We're thrilled to announce that Happy Landing, Hotel Fiction, and Nicotine Dolls are among the new additions, bringing their unique sounds to the boat. We also reveal the return of TRB vets like Red Wanting Blue, Welshly Arms, Tonic, and Will Hoge, who have become synonymous with the event's ethos. The episode builds up to the grand reveal of headlining acts, including Walk the Moon and Echosmith, and American Authors who promise to bring their infectious energy and hit songs to the high seas. "Behind the Scenes with Michael Lombardo: Banking on an Incredible Rock Boat XXIII" Welcome back, fellow music enthusiasts, to another episode of our podcast. Today, we're wrapping up season three with a bang, featuring our final rock boater interview before we sail into season four. Our guest, Michael Lombardo, joins us from Bellingham, Washington, to share his incredible journey through music, mentorship, and the magic of the rock boat community. Michael's story begins in Los Angeles, where his passion for music led him to work at the iconic K-Rock radio station. Michael's love for music never waned, even as he transitioned into a banking career. He and his wife, Michelle, have been deeply involved in mentoring bands since 2005, offering advice on fiscal responsibility and survival tips for life on the road—like the indispensable value of Ziploc bags. Michael was introduced to the Rock Boat five years ago and has been hooked ever since. He's attended several Sixthman cruises, but TRB holds a special place in his heart. Michael shares his experiences of the unique environment where artists and fans mingle as equals, breaking down the barriers that often exist at traditional concerts. During our conversation, Michael recounts his first Rock Boat experience, which came at a time when he was rediscovering his personal joys post-divorce. He was invited by friends to set sail, despite his initial skepticism about cruises. The trip turned out to be a surreal experience that he wouldn't trade for anything. Michael also highlights the importance of The Rock Boat Family's community and how it supports artists beyond the cruise itself. He shares a personal story of helping the band Fox Royale during their European tour with Young the Giant, showcasing the deep connections and support system within the Family. We delve into the evolution of the rock boat experience, from the booking process to the customer service improvements made by Sixthman over the years. Michael praises the organization for its enhanced communication and the bold move of booking Young the Giant for the upcoming cruise, which he believes will bring a fresh dynamic to the event. As we discuss the anticipation for the next rock boat, Michael expresses his excitement about introducing a new boater to the community and the thrill of witnessing their first-time experience. He also shares his hopes for spontaneous collaborations between artists on the boat, which he feels are the essence of the rock boat's charm. Finally, Michael offers some insider tips for future rock boaters, including the best way to spend time before and after the cruise. This week, we welcome former Elektra Records recording artist Vaughan Rhea to the podcast! Vaughan was the founding member and lead vocalist of the rock band Vonray. Listen in as he walks us through how learning to play guitar in high school and performing in dorm rooms and fraternities in college led to pursuing music full-time, culminating in a record deal in late 2001. We discuss the highs and lows of "making it" in the music business, including recording at the storied Cello Studios in LA, touring with acts like Creed and Sister Hazel, and being featured on the hit TV show Smallville, only to end up leaving the business at the height of his success. We go on to talk about the ways the music industry has changed since Vaughan left, how he has continued to create, now as a high-end custom knife maker, and much more! In this episode, Laura and Tracy sit down with songwriter, producer and publisher Luke Laird. Luke talks the magic of writers' rounds, being reluctant to ask for help, letting go of jealousy and the nitty gritty details of his early publishing deals. Laura also shares the story of a pivotal moment that lead to her being a songwriter. Ferocious talent, wit, and sincere humility rarely come together like they do in Grammy winner Luke Laird. Since moving to Nashville from a small farming town in Pennsylvania, Laird has become one of country and pop's top songwriters and producers. The numbers are staggering: 52 radio singles –– 24 of which were Billboard No. 1 hits and 5 of which were in the Top 5 –– 2 Billboard No. 1 singles as a producer, and more than 125 released cuts fill his catalog. In four separate years, every single released that Laird wrote peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. He earned ACM Songwriter of the Year honors in 2015, and was named BMI Songwriter of the Year in 2012.   As a producer, Laird has helped shape some of music's most critically acclaimed projects of the last decade. He co-produced Kacey Musgraves' 2013 debut, Same Trailer, Different Park, which garnered Grammy honors for Best Country Album and an ACM Album of the Year win. In 2015, he returned to the studio with Musgraves to co-produce her triumphant sophomore release, Pageant Material. Laird earned his second Grammy for Best Country Song with Musgraves' “Space Cowboy” in 2019. He also has producer credits on Thomas Rhett, Ingrid Michaelson, Brett Eldredge, Steve Moakler, Everette, Kassi Ashton, Anna Vaus and more.   A slew of Grammy, ACM, CMA, and other nominations line Laird's resume, which also includes six CMA Triple Play Awards, four NSAI “Songs I Wish I'd Written” Awards, the 2012 BMI Country Song of the Year trophy for Rodney Atkins' “Take a Back Road,” and more. His list of No. 1 singles reads like a carefully curated playlist of soulful contemporary country: “Hard To Forget” (Sam Hunt); “Fast” and “I See You” (Luke Bryan); “Head Over Boots” (Jon Pardi); “T-Shirt” (Thomas Rhett); “Gonna” and “Hillbilly Bone” (Blake Shelton); “Talladega,” “Give Me Back My Hometown,” and “Drink In My Hand” (Eric Church); “American Kids” (Kenny Chesney); “Sunshine & Whiskey” (Frankie Ballard); “One of Those Nights” (Tim McGraw); “Downtown” (Lady Antebellum); “Somebody's Heartbreak” (Hunter Hayes); “Beat This Summer” (Brad Paisley); “Pontoon” (Little Big Town); “You” (Chris Young); “A Little Bit Stronger” (Sara Evans); “Take A Back Road” (Rodney Atkins); and “Temporary Home,” “Undo It,” “So Small,” and “Last Name” (Carrie Underwood).   Other artists who have recorded Laird-penned songs represent a jaw-dropping grab bag of genres: George Strait, Maren Morris, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Brandy Clark, Toby Keith, Jake Owen, Steve Moakler, Sister Hazel, Ingrid Michaelson, Ashley Monroe, Sam Hunt, Angaleena Presley, Nikki Lane, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Sheryl Crow, Brett Eldredge, Florida Georgia Line, Ne-Yo, Neal McCoy, Amy Grant, and many more.   Laird recently released his own record, Music Row, that offers an intimate look into his journey from Hartstown to Nashville. The first-ever record from one of music's most trusted creators and collaborators, Music Row is a songwriter's story, traversing childhood, grief, addiction, family, and the community he loves. The songs are deeply personal and sometimes raw, all delivered by the songwriter himself.   Today, Laird writes for and co-owns Nashville-based publishing and management company Creative Nation with his wife, Beth.   Learn more about your ad choices. Collective Soul's Will TurpinIt's an honor for the BoatCast to welcome Will Turpin (bass/backup vocals) of Collective Soul to the podcast. He shares his excitement about playing the upcoming Let's Go Music Festival and relives his memories of the Rock Boat. Collective Soul is an iconic American Rock band of the early 90s who have not only released 4 platinum records but also won multiple Billboard music awards. Will leads off by talking about how the band has evolved and how they continue to take so much pride in making sure they are the most reputable live rock band they can be. Will, whose father Bill was a lifelong musician and founder of Real 2 Reel Studios in Jonesboro, GA, truly understands the power of music. After Will's father passed in late 2018, he went on to co-own his father's studio and takes deep pride in that endeavor. It's also amazing to hear the history of the studio, as Ed Roland (lead singer) and Collective Soul essentially originated from this studio. Will tells another amazing story about how he was in a pizza shop with Jett and Ryan of Sister Hazel when they told him about how they were going to charter 1/2 a boat. Will remembered thinking how cool the idea was but "had no idea it would turn into the franchise and the juggernaut that is now The Rock Boat". He talks about how much he and the band enjoyed their experiences on the Rock Boat and how they still have life-long friendships with people they met on the boat.Let's Go Music Fest 2023!Collective Soul will be a headliner at Let's Go Festival on Friday June 2nd in Crownsville, MD with LIVE and Filter!
