In this podcast we explore and discuss various spiritual questions in a casual and relaxed format. All views and beliefs are welcome here. We're interested in tackling life's tough philosophical questions and exploring who Jesus is together.
Did Jesus really claim to be God in Mark 6 when he stood on the waves during a storm? Some translators depict Jesus as using God's divine name "I AM" to identify himself, while others translated his words as "it is I." As it turns out, both are valid translations. In part 1 we discussed the context of this story and why it supports a depiction of Jesus as God. In part 2, we'll explain why Bible translators may have opted for the translation "it is I" instead of "I AM," and discuss questions surrounding the translation of Jesus' words from Aramaic to Greek. Did Mark pull a fast one on readers and change the story? Some say yes, but let's put this question under investigation! Sources: Word Biblical Commentary 34a by Robert Guelich. This episode discusses questions about Jesus' use of God's name "I AM" to identify himself in Mark 6:45-54. A commonly-held belief is that only John, the author of the last gospel reported Jesus believing himself to be God, but here in Mark there are several statements of Jesus' divinity that are sometimes difficult to find. We'll help uncover them here and discuss common questions we receive. This episode builds on the concept of the Angel of the Lord introduced in the previous episode; the idea that Jesus actually appeared in the Old Testament. We'll focus on where Jesus showed up in the book of Exodus and how it impacts the story where God's followers escaped from slavery in Egypt and became the nation of Israel. Plus, we'll explore what this story has to do with us! This episode features live audio from Nathan's presentation at Asbury Church on July 2, 2023. Related scriptures: Exodus 23:20-21 Jude 4-5 (ESV) Matthew 16:24-25
Did you know there's a strong case that Jesus actually led the Exodus and the conquest of Canaan himself? Scripture might actually back that up! There was an old forgotten Jewish view called the Two Powers in Heaven that described God appearing in the form of a man or angel in the Old Testament. It's a view that can be found throughout the Old Testament in many book, particularly in the first five books of the Bible. On this podcast we'll discuss this views as well as some counter opinions by John H. Walton. We hope this will give you a good understanding of both views and help you decide which view you think makes the most sense. Your decision on this issue could actually help connect the Old Testament to the New Testament and reconcile many tough questions about the Bible. Did the Gospel of Mark present Jesus as merely human or as God? Mark 1:1 presents Jesus as the Son of God, but some say that title means he was simply a believer in God. Others say it means he was the literal son of God Himself. So which did Mark mean? It's easy to miss what Mark was trying to say because Mark didn't write his gospel using modern language and phrases. Because of this, we have to work quite a bit harder to understand what Mark was really trying to say. We'll look at some historical and cultural context that will help us unlock the original meaning of Mark 1:1. There's more packed into this single Bible verse than most realize! Mark 1:1 (ESV): The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Want to study the Bible with your friends?
