Today we wrap up our discussion of our March book, Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles. We loved rediscovering this classic text and spent two full episodes diving in. The themes in this novel still resonate today and Hardy was ahead of the curve in his understanding of the plight of women. We also announce our April book which we are so excited about -- it is a big departure from Tess! And of course, our usual banter and life updates - join us! Find us on Instagram! Today Sophie and I begin discussing our February and March book, Tess of the D'Urberville's by Thomas Hardy. This was a re-read for both of us and we were surprised at how relevant it still felt -- some themes will always resonate. There are no end of novel spoilers here - we only talked about the first 3 phases (about half the book) and will finish up at the end of March. We also continue with our regular segments! It was so fun to get academic about this infamous text - join us! Find us on Instagram! We were absolutely thrilled to welcome Joanna Biggs, the author of our January book, A Life of One's Own: Nine Women Writers Begin Again. Sophie and I connected with this special book on so many levels and to have the opportunity to talk with Joanna brought our reading full circle. Joanna shares her inspiration for this project, why she chose the authors she featured, and her hopes for how this work might inspire other women. We also heard how the cover art was chosen and it was such a poignant part of our discussion! We were very taken with both this book and its author - we think you will be too. Join us! Today we have a special guest! As most of you know, we welcomed a baby to the family two months ago! Our oldest daughter and her husband brought Adeline Mae into the world and we've all been soaking up all the love and joy that accompanies life with a newborn. As we are a podcast dedicated to the Generations, and we just added one, we thought we'd talk with Olivia and hear her thoughts and early reflections about this very special time of life. Join us for a candid conversation about the decision to have a child, the highs and lows of pregnancy and postpartum, and how perception matches reality. We will even talk about how reading fits into a new mother's world - and it does! Also, don't miss the announcement of our February/March book - classics lovers where are you? Join us! Wow, how are we at the point of making "top of" lists?!! This year has both been a whirlwind, and dragged its feet on the way out. But, it certainly was unprecedented when it comes to reading. On today's episode, we get an insider look of what happens behind the scenes during a celebrity auction at a major auction house. Sophie's job is incredibly interesting and she's had a busy fall due to some very unique estates going up for sale. Today she shares what happens when the art and ephemera of big name figures go to auction! This episode is a bit shorter than usual because Mr Wiggins got very wiggly! We chatted briefly about a couple books - one of Deb's 2023 favorites and one of Sophie's beloved classic favs. Join us!
Today's episode is Deb's October book wrap up! Of the 9 books I read this month, there is only one that left me flat - the others I both highly recommend and connected deeply with for many reasons - this is an eclectic bunch! From 600 page tomes to TWO short story collections, and some absolutely beautiful novels about motherhood, it was a good month! Join me! Find us on Instagram! We had a lot to talk about today. Given the horrific events unfolding in Israel, it's hard to know what to say. Sophie and I talked it through and she discussed how the terrorism is affecting life in the city. Wiggins has now been in NYC for one month! Hear the highs and lows of puppyhood and apartment life, and why we both won't be choosing singing as a career...this will make sense at the end of the episode! Fall reading is the best. Sophie just listened to one of the biggest books of the fall literary scene - hear what she has to say! This is not only a longer book than we normally read together, but the first book takes up a significant part of the page count. So, we decided to divide our discussion between July and August so as to give each section its due. On today's episode, Sophie and I discuss our June book, The Fortnight in September by R.C. Sheriff. We both found this to be an almost perfect summer novel and we share some of the reasons it struck all the right notes, despite being close to a century old. On today's episode we discuss our May book, A Woman's Story by Annie Ernaux. Ernaux won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022 and yet neither of us had read anything she'd written, so we decided to change that. We spent the month not only reading (and re-reading) this beautiful book, but learning about her life, her inspirations, and her very unique writing style. Many of you will know her as the face behind the account @sixminutesforme. Jaclyn is Australian by birth, lived in Houston for a few years and is now back in Melbourne, but we've continued our connection over the miles. We talked about why she began her IG account, how it's changed over the years, and we asked the probing question “what does sixminutesforme mean?” Join us! In our final ode to Virginia Woolf, today we compare our feelings for The Hours, the 1998 Pulitzer Prize winner that was inspired by Woolf's Mrs Dalloway. Today we welcome Alexandra Kelebay to the podcast! I bet the people who listen to us know Alexandra from the world of Bookstagram, where Alexandra is known as @TheBookishGlow. Today we're excited to have her with us for what we are calling our “seasons of life” episode. Between the three of us, we are at very different places in our lives and we thought it would be interesting to share what we treasure about those phases and what we miss or look forward to in others. This is our final episode of 2022! We are doing a bit of a wrap up and best of memories! Deb: Best memory: Waking up after surgery and hearing Dr Wells say “it went great.” And my first bike ride with a new hip Best meal: Amelie in NYC with Sophie (twice) Best day: Hannah's white coat ceremony Best trip: 4th of July girls weekend in NYC with Sophie when walking was pain free. Best book: Trust by Hernan Diaz: Classic writing style, interesting format, wonderful author… 2023 goals: To be less stressed by my IG page; always feeling like I need to race to finish a book. To try and worry less (I'm worried I can't do it lol) Sophie: A fun thing to do is to go through your archive on instagram and see all of your stories from the past year. Best memory: Finding the perfect reading spot in Central Park - now that Eli works Saturdays when the weather is nice out I got into a rhythm of going to the park with my book. Using the park as my backyard has been such a nice way to relax and unwind. Best meal: Contramar in Mexico City Best day: Eli's gallery opening with everyone in attendance! Best trip: Mexico City Mini trips: Summer weekends in Saratoga (blueberry picking, long warm days, evenings on the porch) Best book: Also A Poet by Ada Calhoun 2023 goals: To be more involved in women's rights organizations rather than just donating - either volunteering or attending events To dedicate small bits of time throughout the day to learning (duolingo, newspaper article, reading a chapter of a book, etc) To hosting people at our apartment more for dinner/drinks https://www.librarything.com/ https://www.ameliewinebar.com/ http://www.contramar.com.mx/ https://www.duolingo.com/ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/articles-of-interest/id1455169228 https://bookshop.org/p/books/perestroika-in-paris-jane-smiley/14455736?aid=4835&ean=9780525436096&listref=books-mentioned-on-my-generations-podcast
