Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for October 14, 2024 is: taciturn • TASS-uh-tern • adjective Taciturn is a formal word that describes someone who tends to be quiet or who tends to speak infrequently. // One of the twins was taciturn and shy, while the other one was more outgoing. See the entry > Examples: “Joan Didion looks straight at the camera, with her fist curled in front of her mouth—as if to indicate it is through her hands that the taciturn thinker speaks.” — Evelyn McDonnell, The World According to Joan Didion, 2023 Did you know? Even if you consider yourself a person of few words, taciturn is a good one to keep in your pocket, if for no other reason than it's an efficient way to describe your own particular deportment. While ramblers ramble and babblers babble, the taciturn among us turn things down a notch, preferring to keep mum rather than add their voices to the verbal hubbub. Taciturn traces back ultimately to the Latin verb tacēre, meaning “to be silent.” While English users were quicker to adopt other tacēre descendants such as the adjective tacit (“expressed without words” or “implied”) in the 1600s and even the noun taciturnity in the 1400s, taciturn wasn't on anyone's lips until the 1700s.

Evelyn had been talking about writing this book for some time with her publishers. Trying to write a biography of a person who's still alive is never easy, especially for such a vaulted figure as Joan Didion.  After her death, the book had a context of also trying to explain Didion's legacy in the wake of many articles that came out on Didion. Evelyn wrote this book because there was so much interest in Joan Didion, but also hype around her.Listen in to hear more about Didion's Contrasts and Transformations including significant connections between Evelyn and Joan.

In Evelyn McDonnell's The World According to Joan Didion, readers will find an intimate exploration of the life, craft, and legacy of the revered and influential writer Joan Didion. As a groundbreaking journalist, essayist, novelist, and screenwriter, Didion was a writer's writer—a keen observer of life's telling little details. Her insights continue to influence creatives and admirers, encouraging a close observation of the world by unsentimental critics and meticulous stylists. McDonnell is an acclaimed journalist, essayist, and critic herself. A native Californian, feminist, and university professor, she regularly teaches Didion's work and thus is well able to interpret her legacy for readers today. Inspired by Didion's own words—from both published and unpublished works—and informed by the people who knew Didion and whose lives she helped shape, The World According to Joan Didion traces the path she carved from Sacramento, Portuguese Bend, Los Angeles, and Malibu to Manhattan, Miami, and Hawaii. McDonnell reveals the world as seen through Didion's eyes and explores her work in chapters keyed to the singular physical motifs of her writing: Snake. Typewriter. Hotel. Notebook. Girl. Etc. Hat & Beard editor and fellow traveler Vivien Goldman introduced me to McDonnell's work a decade ago. Being a big Didion head myself, I couldn't wait to talk to McDonnell about this smart, elegant, and undeniably readable biography—the first published since Joan's death in December of 2021.

Taylor Swift and Beyoncé have achieved a degree of power in the music industry that singer/songwriters of earlier eras like Joan Baez—as the folk icon tells us—never even contemplated. Six decades ago, Baez was part of a folk revival that regarded music not merely as entertainment but as a vessel for political engagement and social change. In the documentary Joan Baez: I Am a Noise, the now-83-year-old musician and activist reflects on her career and legacy. Smithsonian senior editor Jennie Rothenberg Gritz interviewed Baez about the film and about the shifting intersection of art and activism. We present excerpts from that conversation in this episode. Then, veteran music critic Evelyn McDonnell discusses how the political dimensions of pop music have changed since Baez's era, and what it means that many fans now look Beyoncé and Taylor Swift not just for great music, but for comment on the state of the world. Clips from Joan Baez: I Am a Noise in this episode are used with permission from Magnolia Pictures & Mead Street Films. Learn more about that film here. In this episode we welcome acclaimed critic, author and professor Evelyn McDonnell and invite her to discuss her new Joan Didion book, along with the Motels, Britney Spears and California's pop history in general. Evelyn talks about her early L.A. memories and childhood move to Wisconsin before we hear how she progressed from her college paper in Providence, RI, to becoming the pop critic for the Miami Herald. We also note books such as her Runaways biography Queens of Noise, a suitable jumping-off point for a long conversation about her fellow Californian, Didion. Mark and Martin reminisce about the impact of Didion's extraordinary essay collections Slouching towards Bethlehem and The White Album, after which we follow her career through to the bestselling Year of Magical Thinking. The L.A. theme continues as we hear two clips from Steve Roeser's 2001 audio interview with Motels singer Martha Davis, putting that band into historical context with discussion of the pre-punk D.I.Y. "Radio Free Hollywood" shows in 1976. From there we fast-forward to the very different "L.A. Woman" that was and is Britney Spears, which in turn prompts our guest to give her very pertinent take on the [Jann] "Wennergate" debacle of the past month. At a significant remove from all this Hollywood Babylonia was avant-jazz giant Carla Bley, whose death we mark in a conversation about 1971's extraordinary Escalator Over The Hill. Finally, Mark mentions pieces he's recently added to the RBP library, including interviews with Laurie Anderson and the Byrds' Roger McGuinn, and Jasper rounds the episode off with remarks on pieces about Herbie Hancock and Steve Goodman's Hyperdub label.  Many thanks to special guest Evelyn McDonnell. The World According to Joan Didion is published by HarperOne and available now. Pieces discussed: Hollywood Swinging: Joan Didion in '60s L.A., The Runaways, The Motels' Martha Davis audio, Britney Spears at Staples Centre, Britney Spears interviewed by Steven Daly, Carla Bley interviewed by Brian Case, Carla Bley at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Dwight Twilley Band, Dwight Twilley: Magical Mystery Man, Queen Latifah/DJ Mark the 45 King, The Byrds, Laurie Anderson, Steve Goodman & Hyperdub and Herbie Hancock.

For better or worse, Wagner is often considered the most widely influential figure in the history of music. Around 1900, the phenomenon known as Wagnerism saturated European and American culture. Anarchists, occultists, feminists, and gay rights pioneers saw him as a kindred spirit. Then Adolf Hitler incorporated Wagner into the soundtrack of Nazi Germany, and the composer came to be defined by his ferocious antisemitism. In this livestreamed conversation, music critics Alex Ross and Ann Powers took a nuanced look at Wagner, with reflections from Ross’s book, Wagnerism: Art and Politics in the Shadow of Music. They discussed how the composer of such colossal creations as The Ring of the Nibelung, Tristan und Isolde, and Parsifal came to have such a many-sided legacy. In a journey of passionate discovery, they invited us to consider how artistry can be undone by an ideology of hate—and urging us toward a more honest idea of how art acts on the world. Alex Ross has been the music critic for The New Yorker since 1996. His first book, the international bestseller The Rest Is Noise: Listening to the Twentieth Century, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and won a National Book Critics Circle Award. His second book, the essay collection Listen to This, received an ASCAP Deems Taylor Award. He was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2008 and a Guggeinheim Fellow in 2015. Ann Powers is NPR Music’s critic and correspondent. Her books include Good Booty: Love and Sex, Black and White, Body and Soul in American Music, Weird Like Us: My Bohemian America, and (with the artist) Tori Amos: Piece By Piece. She is the co-editor, with Evelyn McDonnell, of Rock She Wrote: Women Write About Rock, Rap, and Pop, the first published anthology of women music writers. One of my personal favorite groups of all time, Heart, was formed in 1970, featuring sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson. The Wilson sisters have plenty of success with the band that they formed out of the ashes of “White Heart,” the original group’s name from Seattle. In 1973, the band began their most famous lineup of superstars, pushing out hits like Crazy on You, Magic Man, and Barracuda. But the Wilson sisters have also had interesting and tumultuous personal lives. Ann Wilson had quite an affair with their sound manager, Mike Fisher. At the same time, Nancy was dating Fisher’s brother Roger, who just so happened to be the lead guitarist for Heart. In 1979, Ann was the one to fire Roger from the band. In the 80s, Nancy made an appearance in the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and ended up marrying screenwriter Cameron Crowe in 1986, and then separated in 2008. Like most band members in the US, you get your start in music having worked in fast food. Ann once worked in a KFC restaurant, and was fired before the band hit it big. But if she hadn’t been fired, the band wouldn’t have materialized and turned into a success. Ann says at one time, she considered sending a Platinum record to Colonel Sanders to thank him for receiving that pink slip. At some point of the height of the band’s success, Heart's manager and male bandmates implored Nancy to talk Ann into losing weight, arguing that the extra pounds were affecting the band's record sales. Nancy refused and instead helped her sister - who was picked on for her weight in high school - overcome stage fright and body-shaming-related panic attacks. According to the 2018 book Women Who Rock by Evelyn McDonnell, Nancy would stand nose-to-nose with Ann, saying, "Hello, hello, come back come back, come here come here, I'm with you, look at me, keep looking at me," and Ann would. And, if you can believe it, one of the Wilson sisters had quite the stuttering problem as a child. Ann Wilson says her childhood stutter disappeared when she started singing more often.

“Don’t talk, just listen.” Jodeci announced themselves to the world on their 1991 debut album, Forever My Lady. They didn’t invent new jack swing but few R&B groups so seamlessly melded the bravado of hip-hop style with soulful pipes that could melt hearts and quicken pulses. Backed by the musical mentorship of Al B. Sure and A&R-ed by a young Uptown intern named Sean “Puffy” Combs, Jodeci all but heralded the end of ‘80s quiet storm respectability and stepped left of the youthful innocence of early New Edition and even the genteel charm of their contemporaries, Boyz II Men. K-Ci, JoJo, Mr. Dalvin and DeVanté Swing were the self-proclaimed “bad boys of R&B” and they wore that attitude on their sleeve and in their songs.   Forever My Lady was the pick of our guest, UCLA professor, Dr. Shana Redmond who studies popular music, race and politics. Her first book, from 2014, was Anthem: Social Movements and the Sound of Solidarity in the African Diaspora and she’s currently working on two new books including Everything Man about the life and legacy of singer, actor and activist Paul Robeson. She discovered Jodeci at the precocious age of 11 and along with Morgan and Oliver, they discussed how Jodeci cut a different path into R&B of the era, whether the album’s ballads or dance jams aged better, and whether or not Jodeci covering the ‘60s pop group, The Association, was a wise decision or not.    More on Shana Redmond Interview on Left of Black with Mark Anthony Neal How Do You Like It? podcast episode alongside Evelyn McDonnell and Alice Bag Website | Twitter More on Forever My Lady “Jodeci “Forever My Lady”: A 25th Anniversary Retrospective” (Dart Adams) “How Jodeci’s ‘Forever My Lady’ Influenced Generations of Male Singers” (The Boombox) “Jodeci’s Forever My Lady Was Revolutionary for Me, a Church Boy From Okla.” (The Root) Show Tracklisting (all songs from Forever My Lady unless indicated otherwise): Forever My Lady Stay Pebbles: Love Makes Things Happen MC Hammer: Addams Groove Come and Talk to Me 112: Cupid It's Alright Interlude (553 - Nasty) Stay U and I Come And Talk To Me Jodeci: Feenin (Remix) The Association: Cherish Cherish X's We Share Forever My Lady   Here is the Spotify playlist of as many songs as we can find there. The Album: Janelle Monae: Dirty Computer (2018) To close out our Women Behaving Boldly mini-series, we brought things all the way up to the present by tackling a 2018 album. Our guest, music writer and journalism professor Evelyn McDonnell wanted to talk about Atlanta's Janelle Monae and her recent LP, Dirty Computer. Between her various alter egos and concept-driven albums, Monae's been a critic's darling since she first broke out ten years ago and the intervening decade hasn't dimmed her creative appeal a bit. Dirty Computer, and its accompany mini-movie of music videos, touches on many of Monae's favorite themes: sci-fi futures (some good, some not so good), fluid identities (including her own evolving sexuality), and some of the most soul/funk/rock/pop concoctions you can imagine. If Monae's recent gem was a perfect capstone to our six weeks of Women Behaving Boldly, it was perfectly matched by the guest who chose it. McDonnell is one of the most accomplished music journalists of her generation, having previously written the books Queens of Noise, about the Runaways, Army of She, which is about Bjork, and Mamarama, which is about Evelyn herself.  Her latest is the massive anthology, Women Who Rock, a 400 page edited anthology that focuses on over 100 of the most important women in pop music history, written by many of our favorite writers including both Lynnee Denise and Ann Powers, both of whom also contributed to our Women Behaving Boldly series. From Madonna to Beyonce, Amy Winehouse to Dolly Parton, women have played an essential and undeniable role in the evolution of popular music. Writer and professor of journalism Evelyn McDonnell joined us for a conversation that champions the 104 greatest female artists who have played critical roles in defining modern music. She shared glimpses from Women Who Rock, a collection of essays that offers an up-to-date history of the evolution, influence, and importance of female musicians, both modern and timeless. As part of the exploration of these essays, McDonnell welcomed legendary music critic Gillian Gaar to read a selection from her work contained in this collection.
