Nick has six novels and a collection of short stories under his belt, but A Forty Year Kiss may be his first love story.  His mind was set to wondering after he overheard a passionate conversation in his favorite local bar between two older people, a conversation that made him blush just a little. He began playing with the idea of what this couple's back story was. Nick's book asks readers to consider the difference between first love and love between mature adults, how life's baggage affects personal relationships, and whether people can really change.    Nick also talks to us about his rural Wisconsin roots, why he read Babysitter Club books in his childhood, and the debate on whether he should wear a cape.     For our book recommendation section of this episode, we decided to find some of our favorite books we've read as a result of being in a book club together for two decades. For the most part, our book club chooses novels, but there is one memoir in the lot, as well as contemporary fiction, historical fiction, sci-fi, and a classic.    Books Discussed in this Episode:   1- A Forty Year Kiss by Nickolas Butler   2- Shotgun Lovesongs by Nickolas Butler   3- A Paris Year by Janice MacLeod   4- Godspeed by Nickolas Butler    5- Love, Hope & Carnage by Nick Cave and Sean O'Hagan   6- The Fertile Earth and the Ordered Cosmos edited by M. Book: “The Hipster's Legacy” Website(s): www.plumtreetales.com Facebook: Lorraine Gibson Cohen Facebook LorraineGibson Cohen, daughter of Harry the Hipster Gibson — a zany, 1940s jazz pianist who claimed to have coinedthe term “hipster” — welcomes audiences into her eccentric family of offbeatartists and musicians in her nostalgic, humor-filled memoir, The Hipster's Legacy: A Memoir of Dreams, Jazz and Family in1960s California. Please refer to the pressrelease below for additional information, and let me know if you would like toreceive a copy of The Hipster'sLegacy for inteview and/or reviewpurposes. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE The Hipster's Legacy aColorful Memoir Characterized by 1960s Nostalgia, Humor and Eccentricity NEW YORK, March 17, 2025 — Immersing oneself in the pages of LorraineGibson Cohen's captivating memoir, TheHipster's Legacy: A Memoir of Dreams, Jazz and Family in 1960s California, would be akin to reading Betty Smith's coming-of-age A Tree Grows in Brooklyn andGerald Durrell's endearing My Familyand Other Animals at the same time. Cohen is the daughter of1940s jazz pianist Harry the Hipster Gibson, who claims to have coined the term“hipster,” and in her book, she recalls her years in a funky, red-shingledcottage next to a landfill in Southern Californiawhere her life was rife with eccentric characters and aburdly humoroussituations. “When I was 22 years old, I started writing in an old grayloose-leaf notebook while I was living temporarily with my older sister, herthree little children and my younger brother in a small beach town in Southern California,” Cohen recalled. “I wrote downthings as they happened. All the funny things and the not-so-funny. There wereshort stories, character studies of people and things, even a song or two.Sixty years later, I found the notebook and started writing again. Before Iknew it, I was writing a book.” A memoir that reads like anovel, The Hipster's Legacy includes 15 illustrations (by Cohen herself) and 35 familyphotos to help bring to vivid life the coming-of-age story of a late bloomer and quiet dreamer. Born into a musical family and raised on dreams of fame andglory, 22-year-old Cohen finds it tough going on her own when she moves to Hollywood. Acceptingdefeat, she takes the 20-mile ride back home. But home isn't quite the same at 230 Culper Court. In her absence, her mother has moved out to live “in sin” with a used carsalesman named Bob. Replacing her at the cottage is Cohen's older sister,Arlene, her three kids, and Cohen's younger brother, Jeff. Cohen's life takes adifferent turn as she learns to fit in with her newly re-arranged family andtheir quirky friends, exotic oddballs, hapless misfits, and the flotsam andjetsam of strange and talented people who pass through the little red cottageby the sea. The Hipster's Legacy isan intriguing and often humorous memoir of a unique family influenced by ahard-working mother who just missed being a saint and a father, the wild jazzpianist and entertainer known as Harry the Hipster, whose amazing abilities andcrazy style influenced the evolution of Rock and Roll.

Probably not.   == CREDITS == Soundtrack "Scepter Drones" by Sayer Roberts "High Scepter" by Sayer Roberts "Walking the Distance" by Jay Varton, Epidemic Sound "No Way Around This" by Real Heroes, Epidemic Sound "Reasons to Love" by Miles Avida, Epidemic Sound "Wrong Platform" by Anthony Earls, Epidemic Sound "From the Dust" by Jon Bjork, Epidemic Sound "Japanese Garden" by Sight of Wonders, Epidemic Sound "The Notebook" by Frank Jonsson, Epidemic Sound "On the Horizon" by Damon Greene, Epidemic Sound "Vessels" by Craft Case, Epidemic Sound "Push n' Shove" by Deskant, Epidemic Sound "Just Be Curious" by Jerry Lacey, Epidemic Sound "Bats and Rats" by Ludvig Moulin, Epidemic Sound "Marie" by Howard Harper-Barnes, Epidemic Sound "What My Hands Can't Hold" by Francis Wells, Epidemic Sound "The Wind is Changing" by Howard Harper-Barnes, Epidemic Sound "Tinder" by _91nova, Epidemic Sound "Somnolence" by Ambientalism, Epidemic Sound "Final Heartbeat" by Experia, Epidemic Sound "Shaman's Hollow" from Tabletop Audio "Twinkle Mind" by Stationary Sign, Epidemic Sound "Trapped in the Stream" by Jerry Lacey, Epidemic Sound "Forest Flute" by Leimoti, Epidemic Sound "Sushi Master" by Sight of Wonders, Epidemic Sound "Cherry Blossom Waltz" by Trevor Kowalski, Epidemic Sound "Fractions of Light" by Rebecca Mardal, Epidemic Sound "Godsend" by Johannes Bornlof, Epidemic Sound "The Butterfly" by Dawn, Dawn, Dawn, Epidemic Sound "A Foreboding Presence" by Martin Klem, Epidemic Sound "High Treason" by Deskant, Epidemic Sound "Power Up" by Phoenix Tail, Epidemic Sound "Overdrive" by Hampus Naeselius, Epidemic Sound "Command Pattern" by Max Anson, Epidemic Sound "Compete to Complete" by Experia, Epidemic Sound "First Shooter" by Bonnie Grace, Epidemic Sound

That all helps build empathy." - Karina Yan Glaser Karina Yan Glaser is always emotionally honest in her stories. Pulling largely from her own experiences, she lets her feelings seep onto the pages in a way that makes it impossible not to feel as a reader. But despite writing for children, she doesn't hide any of those hard emotions such as anger, sadness, and grief. She believes in the power of stories to help kids practice empathy and be prepared for the tough situations we all face in life. Her takes on community, diversity, and hardship are what make her series The Vanderbeekers such a success. In this episode of The Reading Culture, she joins to share how her own reading journey has shaped who she is as a writer and how she approaches building empathy into her stories.Karina has also developed a reading challenge in partnership with Beanstack for listeners and Beanstack partners.
