Human has a deep connection not just to their fellow human beings, but also with nature as a whole and across different species. Christy Cashman explores our relationship with animals in her debut novel, The Truth About Horses. Sitting down with Corinna Bellizzi, she discusses her coming-of-age story about a young woman facing life's unexpected challenges. Christy also shares about her non-profit organization mentoring young creatives in nurturing their artistic expression, shaping inspired individuals who know how to navigate the worlds of arts and entertainment properly. About Guest:Christy Cashman is an author and mother with a diverse background in film, encompassing producing, acting, and screenplay writing—a journey that inspired her debut novel. Alongside her literary pursuits, she actively engages in various organizations, serving on the boards of the Associates of the Boston Public Library and the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, and supports numerous charitable endeavors, including Raising A Reader. Her debut novel, “The Truth About Horses,” released in August 2023, has garnered heartfelt acclaim from readers, literary circles, and the equestrian community alike. Additionally, Christy has authored two children's books: “The Not-So-Average Monkey of Kilkea Castle” and “Petri's Next Things,” both inspired by the true story of a heroic monkey who resided in that historic Irish castle. In 2021, Christy established YouthINK, a nonprofit dedicated to nurturing and mentoring young creatives, bridging them with industry experts to foster mentorship, inspiration and artistic expression. Originating in Ireland, YouthINK made its U.S. debut in August of 2023 in Boston with the immersive workshop “Decisions We Make—Macbeth.” Furthermore, she launched YOUthink Creative Wellness Retreats in 2024, providing guests with a spiritual, creative, and physical sanctuary while supporting YouthINK's teen mentorship programs. As the second youngest of ten children, Christy's upbringing in North Carolina sparked her lifelong passion for horses. When not immersed in writing or leading YouthINK workshops and YOUthink retreats, she can be found riding horses throughout New England and Ireland. Alongside her husband, Jay, and their two sons, Jay Michael and Quinn, along with their beloved trio of dogs and six horses, they divide their time between Boston, Ireland, and Cape Cod. Currently, Christy's working on her second novel, “Beulah,” and her third children's book, “The Cat Named Peanut Shrimp Cookie Fry Muffin Who Lives on Staniel Cay. Startup Whisperer (0:00:00) It's a dream that's been in the back of your mind for years, but your stable job and feeding your family seem to get in the way of starting your own business. But what if you were able to make your dream a reality?  Dr. Okasana Malysheva and Joe Merrill are the co-founders of Sputnik ATX and their mission is to fund and mentor other entrepreneurs who might never have access to the capital they need to get their companies off the ground otherwise. Let Them Play (0:16:25) Parent's all want the same things for their kids—don't they? We want them to be successful, happy, well adjusted—all that jazz. But what can we do to make sure that our kids get there? It might not be the first thing you think of when you're worrying about your child's development, but playtime is really so important for young minds. Here to tell us a little more about why that is and how we can make sure we're encouraging good, productive playtime for our kids is Dr. Magdalena Battles, author of Let Them Play! The Importance of Play and 100 Child Development Activities. Bibliotherapy (0:30:51) I think everyone needs therapy at some point in their lives, and therapeutic experiences can come to us in many different shapes and forms. Today, we're talking about a type of therapy that's a little out of the box. Instead of laying on a couch and spilling your feelings to a doctor, can you gain therapy and healing from laying on a couch with your favorite book? Here to tell us more about the practice of bibliotherapy is Nancy Knapp professor and co-author of The Psychology of Reading: Theory and Applications.  Raising a Reader (0:49:22) There's nothing better than getting lost in a good book. There's nothing quite like just being able to be totally immersed in a story, is there? As parents, of course we want our kids to enjoy this experience as well. But what can we do if our kids just don't seem that interested in reading? Here to help us learn how we can raise readers is Janssen Bradshaw, former children's librarian, founder of Everyday Reading and a free course on Raising a Reader. Activating Your Imagination (1:03:10) Imagination is something that is encouraged in children, but often forgotten in adulthood. Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” So maybe it's time to tune into our childhood selves and figure out how to activate our imaginations. Scott Jeffrey helps successful people access their higher potential. He wrote an article about accessing the imagination that caught our attention, so we invited him on the show to discuss how we, as adults, can access our imaginations. Mini Book Club (1:19:03) Rachel Wadham, host of Worlds Awaiting, shares the best books to give as gifts. Family Literacy (1:27:44) What if you weren't able to complete a job application, understand important food labels, or even read to your child? About half of the United States adult population possesses literacy skills that are described as “challenged” and find these everyday tasks difficult to complete. We live in such a literacy-based world that we thought this issue was important to bring up. In 2002, Michelle and David Baldacci started the Wish You Well Foundation – a non-profit organization with the mission of supporting family literacy in the United States. We're joined by David to talk about it.

Empathy Fatigue (0:00:00) When you're fatigued, depressed, or going through a hard time in our life, there is no better feeling than to have someone next to you for a shoulder to cry on. But sometimes when we're so focused with showing love for those around us, we forget to care for ourselves. Not only does this make it harder to care for those we know that are struggling, but we may find ourselves struggling ourselves. Luckily, there are ways that we can manage being compassionate to those around us while taking care of ourselves at the same time. We've invited Dr. Veronika Tait onto the show who has a PhD in Social Psychology and is whose currently research is focused on emotional well-being and empathy.   History of Popcorn (0:15:04) What snack can jump up to three feet on its own when heated? What does the average American eat 45 quarts of in one year? POPCORN!  Ask any age group, and they will agree that popcorn is one of the most versatile, cheap, and healthy snacks on the market. But where did this delicacy come from? Here with us is Wendy Boersema Rappel of the National Popcorn Board, an entire non-profit organization dedicated to spreading awareness for the unlimited potential of this delightful popping whole grain. Gift Ideas for Kids (0:35:26) Friend of The Lisa Show, Carrie Ann Rhodes, shares some of the best, unique gift ideas for kids. Raising a Reader (0:50:32) There's nothing better than getting lost in a good book. Recharge Your Home (1:06:38) Picture this: you come home from work and the living room is a disaster, your makeup drawer is full of a bunch of stuff you don't use, and you're just feeling blah overall. You feel like you need a change. Sound familiar? Maybe it's time to recharge your home. Kristin Vaselacopoulos is an interior designer with unique and effective ideas on how to organize homes. We've invited her onto the show to give us some tips on how we can recharge the homes we already have. Latest Automotive Trends (1:25:19) Nothing beats the excitement of stepping into a new car. The feeling of the soft leather and that beloved new car smell. While it all seems wonderful, picking out a new car can be a serious commitment. Before doing so, it's important to know what features are available and the upcoming cars that might fit your needs perfectly. Michael Harley is the executive editor for Kelley Blue Book. He is going to tell us everything we need to know about the latest in automotive.

The home environment plays a critical role in a child's oral language development. We know from research that oral language development is the foundation for learning to read and write. The conversational turns and verbal interactions parents have with their children have a far greater impact on language skills than simply reading to or with a child. Students who have quality conversations with their parents or grown-ups build their vocabulary and this, in turn, leads to stronger predictors of future reading success. The How-To will include what parents need to know about quality conversations for language development: authentic praise and encouragements v. discouragements or negations, thinking out loud, etc.About the SpeakerMs. Fussell grew up in the Panama Canal Zone and brings over twenty years of experience in teaching and administration to the Lower School. Classrooms should reflect the students and teachers who inhabit them. Everything from the posters on the walls to the books on the shelves, to the toys in the room, and even to an adult's body language can send subliminal messages. We want those messages to say, "We all belong here." This How-To will offer a few simple strategies for ensuring inclusivity. For example: learning to pronounce every student's name correctly, daily and weekly check-ins, developing rapport with parents, provide a space for questions, understanding one's own values, biases, and ability to empathize.
