“I like me. My wife likes me. My customers like me.” Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) directed by John Hughes and starring Steve Martin and John Candy Next Time: The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We'd like to kick off the holiday with the (sort-of) only Thanksgiving movie, the John Hughes 1987 classic, Planes, Trains and Automobiles. We dissect Steve Martin's slow descent into madness, John Candy's weaponized cheerfulness, and the eternal question: why does every mode of transportation hate these men? You also get to hear Gil experience a new level of hatred. Give us a listen on your way to get stuffed with Thanksgiving food! Happy Thanksgiving! Today Mrs. Chucklehead and myself sit down and just talk about Thanksgiving memories and how much we love the holidays.! Thanks for listening!
Few movies capture the chaos, heart, and humor of the holidays quite like Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Steve Martin's tightly wound Neal Page and John Candy's endlessly lovable Del Griffith deliver one of the greatest odd-couple road trips ever put on film — a journey packed with missed flights, broken-down cars, and moments that somehow make you laugh uncontrollably and tear up at the same time. It's loud, ridiculous, heartfelt, endlessly quotable, and somehow only gets better with age. This movie isn't just a Thanksgiving watch; it's a Thanksgiving tradition that reminds us that sometimes the people who drive us the most crazy are the ones we're most grateful for. From all of us here at Kibbe & Friends, we want to wish you and your family a warm, happy, and safe Thanksgiving. Whether you're traveling across the country or just heading down the street, we hope your week is filled with good food, good laughs, and the kind of memories that only come from time spent with the people who matter most. Drive safe, hug your people, and don't forget to enjoy the ride. The post K&F Show #347: Thanksgiving Special Car Movie Review – “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!” first appeared on The Muscle Car Place.
Burning Bright and Chris Paul sit down for a spirited Thanksgiving-week discussion of Planes, Trains and Automobiles, unpacking John Hughes' classic through humor, film analysis, psychology, and cultural commentary. They break down the movie's “comedy of errors” structure, the over-the-top schmaltz of its emotional beats, and how Steve Martin and John Candy embody two archetypes forced together on a chaotic hero's journey. The hosts dive into the film's mythic storytelling roots, its portrayal of 1980s Americana, the contrast between Neil's polished corporate frustration and Del's messy human warmth, and the way both men represent missing pieces in each other's lives. Along the way, BB and Chris veer into side-rants about Reagan-era prosperity aesthetics, the lost art of character-driven movies, airline misery, AI shaping society since the 1950s, the asymmetry of technology, how modern films misunderstand character, and even how turkeys, pardons, Venezuela, and election narratives tie into today's psyop-ridden media landscape. A sharp, funny, reflective episode blending film breakdown, cultural analysis, and classic Badlands banter.
The transportation travails in PLANES, TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES reveal both hilarity and heartache in a two-hander Thanksgiving classic that always feels like home to us. Happy Turkey Day!
Während seiner Reise lernt Neal den Duschvorhangring-Vertreter Del kennen… and its all downhill from there.
Eric, Jeff, Styles, Sheek and Jadakiss got together in Yonkers to break down the 1987 John Hughes road trip comedy starring Steve Martin and John Candy. In one of the funniest episodes yet, we discussed John Candy's perfect balance of being annoying and good-hearted, what makes someone a good salesman, whether Steve Martin could have made it home on his own, what was really in John Candy's trunk, the most annoying things that Steve Martin and John Candy do, the best lines in the film, debated whether this is a Thanksgiving classic and so much more!!! This week it's a 'State of Thanks' as we try and find the ultimate Thanksgiving movie. First up it's a cast that's as stuffed as a Thanksgiving turkey in 'Home For The Holidays' but this bird might be a bit under done, next is the most accurate representation of the true story of Thanksgiving in history in 'Addams Family Values' up against Ryan's nightmare holiday scenario with the stone cold classic 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles'. Time to put on those eating pants and gorge yourselves on two great movies and also 'Home For The Holidays' Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Send us a textIt's Thanksgiving, and we're carving up some Planes, Trains and Automobiles, and it's not just as a holiday classic, but as a masterclass in comedic discomfort delivered by two legends at the peak of their powers: Steve Martin and John Candy. Martin is a symphony of simmering fury. A brilliant performance of the slow-motion dissolution of a WASP executive's sanity. Meanwhile, Candy's a bulldozing force of good-natured, oblivious optimism. Martin's precise, explosive rants are only possible because of Candy's seismic, childlike sincerity. Elevating what could have been a simple road trip comedy into a biting, yet ultimately heartwarming, testament to the fact that even the most insufferable human beings deserve a little mercy... but only after they've endured absolute hell.
This week on DtW, it's holiday travel at it's best/worst in Planes, Trains and Automobiles! Dan and Raul braved the winter wilds of 80s airports and depots to follow fast frenemies Del and Neal played by John Candy and Steve Martin respectively in this classic story about a trip home for Thanksgiving. The two travelers are seemingly as mismatched as their trip is fraught with implausible calamity, but they make an incredible duo on screen and might actually be just what each of these Chicago castaways needs. This one is beloved for a reason, and if you needed a reason to pop this on around turkey time, this podcast serves as an appetizer OR dessert!
This year's Thanksgiving episode finds Justus and David discussing the classic John Hughes comedy that, despite its title, features precisely ONE plane, ONE train, and multiple automobiles. Plus, they recount their own Planes, Trains and Automobiles-esque experience driving in an electric car that almost caused a seismic rift in their friendship. Remember Del Griffith's motto: like your job, love your wife, and listen to the Greatest Movie Ever Made!Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) is directed by John Hughes and stars Steve Martin, John Candy, Laila Robins, Michael McKean, and Dylan BakerMusic: “Fractals” by Kyle Casey and White Bat Audio
In this special Thanksgiving-season episode of The Shadows Podcast, we break down the emotional intelligence inside Planes, Trains & Automobiles through three powerful lenses: gratitude, grief, and those unforgettable shower curtain rings. What begins as a holiday comedy becomes a masterclass in human behavior — from emotional outbursts and ego clashes to empathy, perspective, and the quiet grief people carry behind the scenes. Inspired by the iconic journey of Neal Page and Del Griffith, we explore why this film hits so deeply today: because we've all been stuck in our own “travel delays,” misunderstood by others, or overwhelmed by the weight of holding ourselves together. You'll hear insights on:✨ How gratitude rewires your emotional reactions✨ How grief shapes connection, compassion, and perspective✨ How small interactions (and yes, shower curtain rings) reveal the masks we wear✨ What Neal Page teaches us about ego, triggers, and self-awareness✨ What Del Griffith teaches us about authenticity, connection, and emotional resilienceWhether this movie is a holiday tradition or you're watching it with new eyes, this episode invites you to slow down, reflect, and approach the season with more presence, patience, and heart. If you loved our episodes on Donnie Darko, Nightmare Before Christmas, or Drake vs Kendrick… this one will hit home.

Author Ed Daly (The Christmas Book) returns to talk about easily one of the most celebrated holiday movies ever, John Hughes' Thanksgiving classic "Planes, Trains and Automobiles." This movie was the career-changer for the late, great John Candy and this episode gets into the hows and whys of that turning point, as well as how the movie was ultimately saved in the editing (as many films often are, but here especially). Would you consider yourself more of a Neal or a Del? What is the most important deleted scene that could've been left in? Which country still rates the movie a PG-13 in spite of the legendary nineteen F-bombs? What is everyone's favorite John Hughes movie? TVC 712.6: Paul Myers, author of John Candy: A Life in Comedy, talks to Ed about two instances in the film career of John Candy in which art imitated life—the scene in Stripes in which Candy's character, Dewey Oxburger, reveals his motivation for joining the Army; and Dell Griffith's "I like me" speech in Plains, Trains, and Automobiles—and how the latter particularly illustrates how director John Hughes understood who Candy was as a person like few others. Guest: Dr. Rachel MuncriefWhen we think about tackling climate change, it's easy to picture solar panels and wind farms. But there's another piece of the puzzle that impacts us all, every single day: how we get from point A to point B. Transportation accounts for a major share of global greenhouse gas emissions, but it's also an area of rapid innovation and urgent opportunity. From cleaner fuels in shipping lanes to electric trucks on highways, the road to a stable climate runs straight through the way we travel and transport goods. Today on Weather Geeks, we're joined by Dr. Rachel Muncrief from The International Council on Clean Transportation, which is an organization leading the charge to transform global transportation systems with science-backed policy and practical solutions. We'll talk about where progress is being made, what challenges remain, and why rethinking transportation is critical for a climate-resilient future. Steve Martin plays Neal Page, an overworked executive just trying to get home two days before Thanksgiving to his family. Del Griffith is a loud mouth overweight blabber mouth salesman that seemingly loves only to talk people to death, followed by enjoying life as a perpetual slob. But this odd couple gets stuck together, and they have the road trip of a lifetime via planes, trains, buses, and automobiles. Along with way hands are shoved into butts, the F-Bomb is laced together in a way that'll make your mother cry with tears and your dad cry with laughter, and six different Dodge LeBaron's give their life to become so famous as the best buddy car of all time that it ended up in Deadpool and and Wolverine. This is an absolutely perfect, quotable, re-watchable, funny, thoughtful, sad, loving, and hilarious movie that we'll all watch on Thanksgiving until we die. 10 Turkey Rolls! Legit Movie Car Facts: -Six custom-painted, green 1986 Dodge 600 convertibles served as comic relief throughout the movie modified with the Lebaron grille, headlights, taillights, and wood siding. . The cars were re-branded as a fictional Gran Detroit, Farm and Country Edition. -Chrysler wanted no part of any relationship with the car. -No actual Town & Country convertibles were destroyed during filming because the studio found plain '86 Dodge 600s and Chrysler LeBarons, painted them green, and then applied the stock wood trim afterward. -Special “D” hood badges replaced Chrysler ones on convertibles used in the movie. -It is so famous that it made a cameo in Dealpool vs Wolverine -The enormous wire wheel covers were a joke. -The color green was chosen by John Hughes himself to go with the wood siding. The car is a nod to another famous Hughes movie car, the Family Truckster from National Lampoons Vacation. -Only one of the cars survived and was repainted a cream color. It was last seen in Los Angeles in 2009. ======================================== Join up via Patreon at patreon.com/KFSHOW Kibbe, Corndog, and the Bern! This week we're traveling all the way back to 1987 to look at, perhaps, the best Thanksgiving movie and buddy comedy ever made, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. A control freak marketing exec and a loudmouthed shower curtain ring salesman team up for the world's most disastrous road trip. What begins as a simple flight home for Thanksgiving spirals into a cross-country journey filled with fiery rental cars, broken trains, and one particularly intimate motel bed scene. Along the way, they endure hilariously awkward mishaps, exchange epic insults and eventually bond over the sheer absurdity of their misfortunes. Rob, Dave and Kurt will take a humorous look at all of the best and maybe not so great moments from this iconic holiday movie. It's the ultimate holiday travel nightmare, equal parts frustration, hilarity and heartwarming bromance. By the time they reach Chicago, you'll never look at a pair of stolen socks or a burnt car the same way again. This is a re-airing from November 24, 2021. The definitive Thanksgiving movie, right?? The travel, the trouble, the good the bad, and laughably maddening scenarios that can only come from the mind of John Hughes. With two comedic giants at the forefront, does this buddy-travel movie hold up and speak through generational lapses? What's Neal's wife's problem? What's in Del's trunk?? How many f**ks does it take to f**k yourself? All this and more while we break down Planes, Trains, and automobiles. •0:00:00- Introductions/Reviews/Chats •0:05:45- Pertinent movie details •0:09:15- Memories of first viewing •0:13:00 - Critical and fan reviews •0:21:00 - Scene by scene breakdown •1:20:15- Modern day ratings —————————————————————— Learn more about your ad choices. In 1987, what is arguably the best Thanksgiving movie ever made, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles hit theaters. Like many people who saw it, I instantly fell in love with it and over the years I have watched maybe over a hundred times. Its a heartfelt comedy, that isn't afraid to go over the top with humor (or its language). So I am very happy to be able cover it on this newest episode of the Retroist Podcast. I start the episode talking about my brush with being the class clown and how that tied into the film. Learning you don't have what it takes to be the funny one in class is a tough lesson, but one I needed to learn. Then I move on the film itself. I discuss the plot, its production, the stars of the film, its reception and much more. For all the years I worked in the video store, this was one film you could count on people renting or buying during the last two months of the year. Even if they weren't, we only needed to put it on the in-store tv to get people interested. Despite this forced watching, I never grew tired of this film. These characters, especially Candy's is just so endearing, its just nice to have them around, even in the background. This is a revisiting of an episode I did back in 2010. Its one that people have mentioned they might like to hear me redo. Its a bit longer than the original, so I hope you like how it turned out.
