Courtney Doyle is my first friend to be on God Stories this year and her second time on the show. In this conversation she shares her story in the middle of currently walking through the grief of losing both parents within 67 days. She shares powerful ways God has spoken to them in this midst of great pain and how He has been there all along. What a gift it is to sit down with Karina and hear her God story. What He has done is nothing short of a miracle. Growing up in an abusive home, then God leading her and her mom and brother to rescue and then leading her family to restoration and reconciliation is truly amazing. Alicia met God and already cultivated a relationship of dependence on Him starting at age 4. She knew Him as Father. Not long after He gave her a heart for the fatherless. She learned about the one child law at age 9, started learning Mandarin by age 11 and started traveling to Taiwan and China at age 15. She moved to Taiwan at age 22 to tell the fatherless they have a Father. The Lord gave her that goal and vision at age 11. Already knowing that growing up spared her from a lot of things. Hearing her heart for Father and for others is stunning. Alicia then shared about how she met her husband and the 9 year journey they shared becoming parents themselves. She shares, “there's something so overflowing of joy in life when we haven't tried to keep it because we do lose our life when we try to keep it but we find our life when we lose it.” She said, “When scripture says, “when we lose it”, that means when we surrender it to the Lord.” Alicia's story is so full of His hope and encouragement and love. About a year ago Rachel went to be with the Lord. Before she passed, she said “yes!” to sharing her God story on my podcast. Unfortunately she passed before we were able to record. My mom, one of Rachel's good friends, had the idea to have some of the closest people to Rachel share on her behalf about Rachel and her story. Tarsha, Ginny and my mom, Terri share what they loved about Rachel, how she impacted them and what they know of her God story. Words like “fighter”, “determined”, “gracious”, “great mom”, “intentional”, “no fear of death”, “faith filled” and more were all used to describe Rachel. Courtney described her relationship with God as “surface level” until she really needed him after having her twin boys at 26 weeks. Through that experience she grew in relationship and dependence on Him and really began to trust Him. Courtney shared how “sometimes God requires of us to be in a painful place but He is going to be there with us.” She believes that if God has ordained something then He will purpose it to work for His good. Tarsha shared her story of growing up in church and learning God's ways in a deeper way as she started taking some classes and going through some really hard trials. She sought the Lord and sought His wisdom and He was faithful in teaching her and so kind to bless her in new ways after hardship like divorce. She is passionate about living her life in God's ways now and encourages us to do the same. Life with God won't always be easy but the difference is that we can have His peace when we are following Him and His way. Kia grew up going to a church where any belief about God was encouraged. She described feeling a hole in heart where nothing could truly answer the questions she had and satisfy her soul. The Christians she encountered were mostly showing her judgement rather than love which wasn't leading her to God at all. The Lord was so kind in drawing her in over the years and the walls she had built up slowly came down and she got to know Who Jesus truly is. How her life has changed since is beautiful. The peace that Kia has and the love that she shows because of God's love is awe-inspiring. We can all learn a lot and be encouraged through her God story. Tiffany Embers-Holubec shares her story of a rough childhood starting as a pre-teen knowing of her moms affairs and how that ultimately led to the death of her dad and later her mom. She shares how suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems and is never the answer. Tiffany's pain led to her making her own bad decisions that caused more pain. God radically saved her life and did gorgeous things in and through it. It's been almost 4 months since I've released an episode and I'm so excited to be back with you. I recorded this in January while on bed rest. God gave me a message about “focal points”. I greatly enjoyed my conversation with Regina this month! I first heard Regina share her story at a Story Tellers Live gathering and loved getting to hear more in our conversation together. Regina shares about the importance of having a good tribe. That we are better together. She said, “Not just being in proximity but building intimacy and relationship over time. That is what being in community and living life together really, really looks like.” Regina shared how community really helped her during some hard times like navigating the criminal justice system for years and pleading her brother and best friends innocence. Regina said that good and hard can co-exist and God doesn't waste a thing. She shares a time when her daughter and all girls of color at their school got a threatening text message filled with hate during lunch. Regina decided to follow the Holy Spirit's guidance instead of her flesh. The way her response impacted the community and brought unity and change still has positive effects to this day. We talk about how our responses teach our kids and how she really wants to reflect God well in all she does. Like Romans 8:28 talks about, He will use all things to work together for our good and His glory. Jocelyn had her first real encounter with the Lord while in Bible College where God spoke to her about her identity. Before that she didn't feel seen or heard. After hearing God, she stopped caring what other people thought of her. She now knows the only One that really matters sees her and loves her. He led her to start a business, Risen Customs where she gets to spread God's word. This is a very personal one for me! I share words my dad wrote on his phone for me after I told him he should write down all of the amazing stories he had. Personal stories from his life. I also share a couple of clips from a recording I took at the beginning of August of my mamaw talking. Little did I know she would pass 3 weeks later. I also share the words I spoke at her funeral. Courtney and I met through my mom and I was instantly eager to hear more of her story. She has amazing stories. We started this conversation talking about how she was first introduced to Jesus through a special woman named Havana. I first saw Mrs. Rhonda Williams on stage powerfully and beautifully singing at Second Baptist Church. Years later she became the Director of Women's Ministry. I met with her a few times while my son attended pre-school there and she poured into me. I loved getting to know her more. In this episode she shared how she married her husband at 18 and the struggles they faced. She talked about having a “truth teller” in your life and what that did for her. Rhonda shared walking through hard times and walking by faith and not sight. She shares that real faith sometimes is moving out in-spite of fear. It's not always being fearless but learning to step out when God has called you so you can accomplish what He has called you to do. Chardae is a warrior woman who adores the Lord and knows Him as her all in all. Chardae learned intimacy with the Father at an early age and even more so as she faced really hard circumstances. She learned how not to blame God for man's mistakes and how not to be bitter towards man as well. We talk about hardship, speaking in tongues, knowing God in all areas and how to invite Him in to our broken spaces. This conversation is a deep well as is Chardae. It was such an incredible blessing for me to sit across the table from Aaron and his wife, Alicia Um to hear his God story in their home. Aaron grew up in South Korea until his family relocated to Spain when he was 17. There he met his now wife of 33 years. He shares with us the hardship they faced with strong cultural differences and people fighting to keep them apart. Aaron's family was very traditional in Korean culture which presented a lot of challenges for him when he fell in love with a woman from Spain. What God did in his life before he even knew God was amazing. He then shares how he began real relationship with the Lord and how transformative that was in all areas of his life. To listen to Hannah's story is to hear God's faithfulness. Her last words of this conversation are “He is faithful”. That sums up her story. What an incredible one it is. Hannah had a need for acceptance and in her words, had a “massive hole” in her heart. She was always wanting more and more and nothing would fill the empty hole. She found herself facing addiction to alcohol. Hannah said that she often looked great on the outside but felt very lonely inside. She faced anxiety and no peace. God kept pursuing her through her hard circumstances and being faithful answering her questions to Him. He lead her to truly understand Who He is, that He's real and then He freed her from the doubt and torment she faced as well as her addiction. No words can capture her story like she can tell it. Rebecca grew up with no stability in her home and craved that love and security which she finally found at the age of 15 when she met her Father God and gave her life to Him. Alix visited America for the very first time in 2001. She was supposed to be in the twin towers the morning of 9/11. God had other plans for her and her tour guide overslept. Alix saw the second plane hit the building with her own eyes. You don't want to miss her story. But what happened after that for her is especially special! Her encounter with Jesus changed the very trajectory of her life. Kelli Lomax shares her story of healing and how once God healed her, He then used her as a healing agent to other people as she says in our conversation. We talked a lot about how He led Kelli to inviting people of different faiths and cultures into her home and genuinely loving and caring about people. Alicia Searl went from being a homeschool mom for years to now being a published writer with 3 girls in Elementary, Middle and High School. She shares her story of motherhood and writing. Alicia struggled with infertility, postpartum depression, and unexpected pregnancy. She started writing to help herself get through struggles of motherhood. At some point she felt God calling her to share her writing with others but faced some doubt. He opened doors in beautiful ways assuring Alicia that this was Him. Kara Potts grew up in an Air Force, Jesus loving family that she was adopted into. She moved around her whole life until her and her husband started having children. Kara shares about living on mission and what it means to “go beyond”. She also shares how she was content and so happy with her life and how it had been pretty easy until 2018. She shares “the storms” that happened that year and how because of knowing God and His faithfulness well before then, she was able to still praise Him and have joy. Doreen Mellor joins us from the U.K. sharing her story of forgiveness towards her dad who she didn't spend much time with growing up. She said he was more absent than present. Rolf Stegemann grew up in Venezuela witnessing his dads anger and abuse to his mom. Rolf swore that when he had kids he would never talk to them or his wife like that. Jake Hassell shares his powerful story of freedom from a long, gripping pornography addiction. He said that he doesn't use the word “addiction” lightly. This was consuming for him and he planned his days around it. A friend invited him to a campus ministry event where Dr. Tour shared his story of freedom and this gave a little hope to Jake. One night in January 2014, Jake fully surrendered and the Lord instantly freed him. He shares at the end how time spent with God is so important and never wasted. I sat down with my friend Ryan McMillian and heard his God story for the very first time. He shared how life wasn't pretty for him for many years and how he lived a life that was self serving until he met his wife, Jordan. She shared part of their story in Episode 3 and now he shared his. Wow is all I've got to say! How the Lord used her in his life is incredible. Ryan said, “I can't tell you about how many amazing things have come from being on the right side with the Lord. I had the privilege of sitting down with Carla Della Femina and getting to know her a little bit on my podcast! Leigh shares about her son Henrik and all that he's gone through in his 11 months of life already. He was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis as a newborn and has faced many attacks from the enemy. His parents have warred for him in prayer and have seen miracle after miracle take place. Like Leigh says, she used every negative report as a platform for prayer. One thing I've appreciated about Clayton Jennings throughout the years is his authenticity. He is real and like he expresses in this episode, he does not water down the gospel when he shares it. Clayton shares how he became a Jesus follower and what that has looked like for him sharing full time through the years including highs and lows. Becca Stegman was a gymnast for 22 years and then worked in journalism with gymnastics after college.
