Send us a textWhen Jen Conrad first sponsored a child in Sierra Leone, she never imagined it would lead to adoption proceedings, heartbreaking visa denials, and eventually creating a groundbreaking program that's changing lives across the country. Her story reveals the hidden aftermath of institutional care that few people consider: what happens when orphaned children become adults? After traveling to Sierra Leone multiple times and forming deep bonds with two siblings, Jen and her husband pursued adoption. Despite gaining full legal guardianship in Sierra Leone's courts, their hopes were crushed when U.S. immigration repeatedly denied visas for their children. Suddenly faced with parenting teenagers across an ocean, Jen discovered an even greater problem - young adults aging out of orphanages had nowhere to go and no skills for independent living."There were more resources available for someone coming out of prison than a child transitioning from institutional care," Jen explains. Without basic life skills, budgeting knowledge, or mental health support, these young adults faced nearly impossible odds. When rumors spread that the transition program would be ending and children might be sent back to families unprepared to receive them, Jen knew she had to act. She worked with a local Sierra Leonean NGO, Child and Family Permanency Services, to create a program to assist care leavers suddenly facing life outside the institution with no supports.Named in honor of her mother who never gave up hope that her grandchildren would come home, Mamaw's House now provides comprehensive support to young adults leaving orphanage care. Managed as a program of an established organization that provides family strengthening, child reintegration and child protection services, Mamaw's House offers care leavers from Sierra Leone orphanages continuing education, connections to find basic housing and necessary services, mentorship from former care leavers, life skills training, and mental health services. Within its first year, it has already helped over 20 young adults. As Sierra Leone considers legislation to close orphanages entirely, Mamaw's House stands ready to expand its crucial work. "I think their stories are going to be very powerful," Jen says of the resilient young people finding their independence through the program. "I'm really encouraged that they're going to break the cycle and be part of this change." Garrett writes "So I'll just start from the beginning, I moved to Tennessee with my mom around the age of 8-9 we've lived here ever since. I began a fascination with Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, a few years later after me and my Mamaw would watch finding Bigfoot on Tv almost every night. Being a kid and growing up watching the show, of course my first instinct was to go and try the things they did and of course that didn't really get much of anything. A few years later me and my buddy got back into the show and we decided to give it a try again. We went to the woods and did the wood knocks and the howls and eventually we got something that sounded like a knock. That was it for that day so we really couldn't say what it really was, but we continued this for weeks and everyday we'd get a knock. Now keep in mind, this area is now huge and while there are big patches of woods a lot of them are getting torn down and developed into schools/houses/neighborhoods. But at the time of this first incident it was still fairly new development with plenty of deep woods. The knocks eventually escalated into whoops and howls as responses and we thought it was the coolest thing ever when we got that first whoop that kinda confirmed to us that we had a Bigfoot in the area. This again continued for weeks until one night we were out there doing the whoops and the knocks and we got this one loud knock that sounded closer than usual, we took a second and did a whoop of our own before we heard thundering footsteps and branches crashing down toward us, we booked it out of the wood line and back to the cul-de-sac that the wood line connected to and made it about 20 yards from the wood line before turning back around to face it. There is a house in that sits directly next to the woods and it had to be around 9-10pm so they had their outdoor flood lights on, we continued to stare until we saw a hand reach around one side of a tree and it stepped out into the flood light revealing itself kinda leaning out from behind the tree. I would estimate it would have to be around 7-9 feet tall but it had a very strong facial resemblance to Patty, I believe it was female I couldn't tell exact hair color as it was dark and I wouldn't have been able to see it at all if not for that flood light, the thing that sticks with me most was I could feel the eyes even though I couldn't see them because they were sunken in its brow. It felt as if they almost burnt a hole in me and that's the one thing I can always remember from that. Fast forward a few years and me and my dad are fishing a spill way in Taylorsville Kentucky, it's a pretty remote spillway that comes directly from a large dam so it maybe had 2-3 other people there that day. It was probably around 5-6pm when we started hearing knocks up in the woods and my dad was never a bigfoot believer but I pointed them out to him and we listened as it continued to this, we then could hear it walking around just out of eye sight in the wood line very large heavy methodical footsteps but you could tell it was on 2 legs, it was pacing for maybe 5-10 minutes before a Red Bull can came flying out of the woods and landed behind another fisherman that was fishing directly in front of the woodline; but after it did that, that's was all for that day. Cut to next day and we went back to the spillway but this time we hiked down stream up in the woods to a launch ramp where we found a crappie hole. We had been catching them cast after cast for maybe half a hour when around the bend of the creek where we couldn't see, we heard what sounded like something jump in the water and cross the creek. We didn't think much of it as there are deer and other animals out there since it is very far out in the middle of no where. After that, a very large oak tree up the hill of the other bank that I would say was probably 6-10 feet around starts shaking and not just like the wind because no other trees are moving, this thing is just rocking back and forth violently and I told my dad “that's the Sasquatch they do that as an intimidation display”. It did it for a few minutes before it stopped and then we could hear it pacing back and forth inside the woodline on the other bank, it then started growling/grunting and threw a few rocks before my dad decided we needed to get out of there. We both came to the conclusion that it wanted our fish we were catching as that place is full of invasive Asian carp and you aren't allowed to put them back after catch so most people leave them on the bank to die. Fast forward to about a month ago, I'm 21 and just had my first baby and me and fiancée had just moved into our house in March of this year. The house we live in now is about 10 driving minutes away from where I came face to face with the first Sasquatch for context. We have a 1 year old German Shepherd and as you know they are highly alert and protective dogs. Our property backs up to one other house and a farm followed by woods and the farmer has birds of all kinds- turkeys, chickens, ducks, etc. Well about a month ago my fiancée took the dog out while I was at the gym and she said she got this really uneasy feeling like she was being watched and that our German Shepherd (Bear) wouldn't stop staring at the woodline. After I came home from the gym it was probably 1:30am, not my usual time as I was off schedule and running behind. Most of the time the latest the dog would go out was around 10-11pm. After I got home and got settled I took the dog out, he was in the yard when he froze and normally with him being a German Shepard he'd bark first and think later, but this time he froze and all of his hair slowly stood up before he went into this crazed angry barking toward the woods where I had to pull him back inside, stuff like this continued for about a week until I went to gym and got home late again. This time it was around 2am and I took him out again and to paint the picture for you a little better there's a barbed wire fence separating our property and the farmers property, but as we got outside I heard those same crashing footsteps as I had heard years earlier this one was much bigger probably 8-10 feet tall but so much wider I couldn't get any details other than that and the long hair hanging off the arms because of the light in the yard from the house behind us. But anyway this thing ran up to the fence line and slammed its fist into a tree and let out this deep grunt/growl. I was petrified and I didn't know what to do in the moment and my “guard dog” was frozen in place not barking or making a single sound my first thought was it was going to kill us. My dog wouldn't come to me after I got to the point of maybe I should go inside so I had to go out in the yard with this thing still standing there staring at us and grab my dog and drag him inside. I have more details about that exact encounter and some other stuff that happened leading up to and after that. Last thing I will share is I believe I have a video of the Sasquatch banging on the side of the farmers barn trying to get to where he stores the birds I'll attach it below but you can hear deep thuds followed by the birds freaking out and that video was taken around 1am also so I can confidently say it wasn't someone using heavy machinery or anything like that. Anyway thank you for listening and if your interested I'd love to share more."

Donald Trumps Vize-Kandidat J.D. It's Tuesday, November 5th, Election Day, A.D. 2024, a critical moment in the history of this country. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Chinese Communists crack down on house churches Last month, one of the largest house churches in China, the Beijing Zion Church, was subjected to more raids. The church was banned by the government in 2018, but has continued to meet. The most recent arrests included a church elder and 11 members. Also, 25 members of Taiyuan Xuncheng Reformed Church in Shanxi province were arrested, fined, and sentenced to 15 days of administrative detention. The members had refused to sign a statement that they would no longer participate in church activities. North Korean soldiers face first combat in Russia's Kursk According to Newsweek, a Ukrainian senior official has reported the nation's armies firing upon North Korean soldiers in Kursk on the border of Russia. This was the first action involving North Korean troops in the Ukrainian war. North Korea launched Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Speaking of North Korea, it launched another Intercontinental Ballistic Missile last week — setting another record of 86 minutes in flight. This was the first missile test in a year. This time the missile hit a record altitude of 4,776 miles and a distance of 621 miles, according to the official KCNA news agency. The Intercontinental Ballistic Missile has a range of 8,100 miles, capable of reaching the United States. North Korea also touts the fourth largest army in the world, complete with 5,000 tons of chemical weapons. The military has already conducted a 35-kiloton nuclear test, twice the power of the nuclear bomb which was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945. Experts believe that North Korea is in possession of as many as 200 nuclear weapons. Rasmussen polling: Trump ahead of Kamala by 3% Here in the United States, one of the few conservative polling organizations, Rasmussen Reports, has Donald Trump ahead of Kamala Harris by 3% going into today's presidential election. Rasmussen also has Trump ahead in Pennsylvania by two percentage points. Plus, the former president leads in North Carolina by three points and Nevada by two. A billionaire election Today's election will be a billionaire election. Kamala Harris has received backing from 83 billionaires and the Trump campaign counts 52 billionaires, reports The Independent. The role of political action committees Super PACs, which take in donations of $5 millions and higher, are far more involved in the presidential race this year, as well. The political action committees backing the Donald Trump campaign have given $522 million more than they did in the 2020 campaign — a 300% increase. And the super PACs backing Kamala Harris have raised 50% more than they did for the Democratic presidential ticket in 2020. Kamala raised $1 billion; Trump raised $400 million Speaking of presidential donors, Kamala Harris raised over one billion dollars for her campaign, and Kamala Harris and Joe Biden together have spent $1.9 billion in this election. By contrast, Trump has spent $400 million. Republican Bob Dole spent $70 million on his campaign for president back in 1996. And George W. Bush spent $180 million in 2000. Bloomberg reports a total of $15 billion has been spent in the 2024 elections, up from $14 billion in 2020, and up from $6 billion in 2012. Dramatic contrast in celebrity endorsements for Kamala vs. Trump America's entertainment cast of celebrities also showed up for this election, almost in unison, endorsing Kamala Harris in political advertisements and cameo appearances at rallies. These included Beyonce, Usher, Jennifer Lopez, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Taylor Swift, Ricky Martin, Eminem, James Taylor, Stevie Nicks, Willie Nelson, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Don Cheadle, Leonardo DiCaprio, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Harrison Ford, George Clooney, Robert DeNiro, Jeff Bridges, Will Ferrell, Jennifer Lawrence, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Elba, Cher, Billie Eilish, Matt Damon, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Morgan Freeman, Jason Bateman, Dave Bautista, Jamie Lee Curtis, Alecia Keys, John Legend, Jon Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, Spike Lee, Ben Stiller, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Keaton, Bryan Cranston, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, J.J. Abrams, Whoopi Goldberg, Nick Offerman, and Samuel L. Jackson. Those names were compiled by Breitbart and Forbes. This is the worldview of Hollywood and the pop music scene in America, supported by Christians who watch the movies and listen to the music. By contrast. the handful of celebrities who have stated support for Donald Trump in this election are Mel Gibson, Dennis Quaid, Jon Voight, and Rosanne Barr. Psalm 33:10-12 reminds us that “The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing. He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. The counsel of the Lord stands forever; He plans of His heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His own inheritance.” J.D. Vance articulates his faith At an October 26th town hall meeting in Rock Church in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Pastor Joshua Robertson asked Trump's Vice Presidential pick, Senator J.D. Vance, about his faith. PASTOR ROBERTSON: “Political candidates aren't always clear about their faith. How do you define your faith and what do you believe?” VANCE: “I'm a devout, practicing, church-going Christian. I was actually baptized for the first time in 2019. So, that wasn't always true. “I was raised by my Mamaw because my mom struggled with opioid addiction for a big chunk of my life, and she was a woman of very profound Christian faith. She didn't graduate from high school, but she thought more about what the Bible required of her than any person that I've ever met in my life. “I served four years in the United States Marine Corps, and then, by around the time that I got out of the Marines and was starting college at Ohio State, I started to think that I knew more than Mamaw did. I started to think that to be educated, and to be knowledgeable in the ways of the world, meant that I had to discard the Christian faith that Mamaw had raised me in. “As I became a more mature young man, and you start thinking about the big questions: What do you want to be as a father? What do you want to be as a husband? What is required of me to be a good man? And I kept coming back to the answers were found in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So, that led me back to my faith. “If you work hard and play by the rules, whether you agree with my religious faith or not, you ought to be able to provide for a family, you ought to be able to give your kids a good education, and you ought to be able to build a life in this country that all of us love. That to me is the politics of the common good, and it's very much influenced by my Christian faith.” How a woman's suicide attempt leads to her courtship and marriage And finally, here's an inspiring story of a British nurse who was about to commit suicide on a summer afternoon in 2019. Charlotte was standing on train tracks, waiting for the end. But little did she know that the engineer, Dave Lay, had other plans. He stopped the train short, descended from his cab, knelt down beside the woman, and struck up a conversation. He said, “Hi! My name is Dave. Are you having a bad day?” He got her some help, but later Charlotte looked him up to say thank you. They spent a few months meeting in coffee shops, and just getting to know each other. Today, they're happily married with a couple of children, reports BBC News. But even more important is this lesson from Proverbs 11:30. “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Election Day, Tuesday, November 5th, in the year of our Lord 2024. [This is the podcast version of an already posted story]It's too late for me. I followed the feminist lie through most of my life, only to wake up much too late to have lived it a better way. You see, it takes a while to realize that it really is about the warm body next to you. It is about the laughing children and grandchildren. It is about the stories, the recipes, the memories, the picnics, the vacations. No, life is never going to be perfect. There will be problems with every family, unforgettable tragedies, broken hearts, and dreams deferred. And there are sometimes mothers who become addicted to drugs. Not everyone grows up easy. Some of us barely make it out alive. As I watched The Machine surround JD Vance like a pack of hyenas going in for the kill, I was disgusted on so many levels. I am sure if the Right had that kind of power, they'd probably abuse it, too. People are people, and power corrupts. But still, the level of depravity was shocking, even for them. The absence of empathy in a culture defined by trauma is what defines the new Left. Their trauma. Someone else's trauma. Trauma from our past. Every kid growing up on the Left will be fed one psych med or another. When Donald Trump was shot, there was just a moment where there was a pause. Wait, they all seemed to think, are we supposed to feel something?Yes, you are supposed to feel something. It's called humanity. Empathy. I have been cursed with too much empathy. I get a double dose from each of my parents. My dad loved his cat Freddy so much he couldn't bear to get him “fixed,” so he let him out to produce untold amounts of wild kittens. One day, Freddy was hit by a car, and my dad never really recovered. He loved that cat. My mom had so much empathy that for a while there, she couldn't bear to see her chickens sitting on unfertilized eggs, so she went to the pet store and bought fertilized eggs so they could hatch. But she kept producing too many roosters and didn't know what to do with them, so she moved the roosters to another property she owned. I joked with her that it was like a male prison. Please, send over some hens. And me, well, I can barely clip the leaves off of a basil plant without feeling bad about it. I save spiders. One video of an abused dog will ruin my entire year. It's a curse—too much empathy. But that's what I feel when I think about JD Vance, what he's gone through in life, and how he's come out of it such a fine young man with a beautiful family and a promising future. It reminds me of that wonderful scene in The Shawshank Redemption, written by Stephen King before he became Trump deranged, and back when Hollywood could still make great movies. JD Vance said something, so what? You can't grow up with a foul-mouthed Mamaw and not fire off a zinger now and again. I grew up with that kind of mother, a mouth so foul she'd make a sailor blush. I often remember her screaming at cars that drove by, “You mother f*cking c*cksucker!” That's probably why I can't shut up. And probably why JD can't either. But that's not why he's my hero. That's a different story entirely. It has to do with growing up like a weed. You don't really belong any place. You grow up strong anyway because something in your DNA makes you a survivor. No hothouse flower was he, nor carefully tended garden plant, but a fast-growing, persistent, ever-present weed. I grew up not that differently than he did—the kind of family where the men leave, and the women go a little crazy. At least there were no drug addicts, but I know what it is to long for normalcy so bad it aches. I know what it is to visit “normal” families and feel envious that there were two parents, that they sat down and ate dinner, and there was lunch money.I know what it is to keep going, no matter what ghosts chase you. I know what it is to be underestimated by everyone, but never let anyone stop you. I never fought in the Iraq war like he did. I couldn't last one day of training to be a Marine. And I'm pretty sure I couldn't become a Senator like he did, much less a candidate for the Vice Presidency. But I know what it is to try at life anyway. JD Vance is my hero because everything he's done so far in life has not killed his faith in himself, his family, his mother, and his country. I would say in his God, but I don't know if he is religious, and I would feel like a phony if I said it that way. I'm not quite there yet. I guess I just mean this life can take you down. If you can somehow survive it, it's a miracle.Donald Trump said JD Vance cares about family to explain away why he is adamant about supporting mothers with kids. You'd have to grow up the way he did and the way I did to understand why someone would be so protective of the family unit. He did not have it growing up, but it was something he longed for. I know that because I felt the same way.If the worst thing he ever did was generalize about “Childless cat ladies,” that's not that big of an offense. The second part of it was specifically about politicians who have less of a stake in the future. Yes, it will probably alienate some voters, but honestly, is that really how you go about voting? Something someone said turns you off so you'll vote for the totalitarians?Maybe Trump could have picked someone who would pull in a swing state, as the Democrats do. He could have picked “a woman.” But I'm glad he picked a survivor, a tough Marine who can take whatever they have to throw at him. We know that because he's already survived the worst of it. We hope.I don't know what will happen in this crazy election. It's the totalitarians vs. the populists. But anyone who blames JD Vance for Trump's loss, should he lose, is a fool. Trump and Vance aren't running against other candidates. They're running against an entire system. Don't kid yourselves. They will attack and destroy anyone who threatens their power. So here's to you, JD. Thanks for fighting the good fight.END// This is a public episode. Chapter 1:Summary of Hillbilly Elegy"Hillbilly Elegy" is a memoir by J.D. Vance that tells the story of his life growing up in a poor, working-class family in Appalachia. Vance's story highlights the struggles and challenges faced by many people in this region, including poverty, substance abuse, and family dysfunction.Vance chronicles his difficult childhood, marked by his parents' troubled marriage, his mother's addiction issues, and the instability of his home life. Despite these challenges, Vance ultimately finds success through hard work and determination. He joins the military, attends college, and eventually graduates from Yale Law School.Throughout the book, Vance reflects on the cultural and societal factors that have contributed to the problems facing his community, including a lack of economic opportunity, a sense of hopelessness, and a cycle of dysfunction that is passed down through generations. Despite these obstacles, Vance ultimately finds a way to break free from the cycle of poverty and create a better life for himself.Overall, "Hillbilly Elegy" is a powerful and poignant memoir that sheds light on the experiences of working-class Americans and offers insight into the complex issues facing this community. It is a compelling and thought-provoking read that explores themes of family, identity, and social mobility.Chapter 2:The Theme of Hillbilly Elegy"Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis" by J.D. Vance is a personal account that highlights the struggles of growing up in a poor Appalachian family, focusing heavily on social analysis and critiquing the white working-class population in America. Below are the key plot points, character developments, and thematic ideas outlined in the book:**Key Plot Points:**1. **Background and Family History**: J.D. Vance narrates his family origins, starting with his grandparents, Mamaw and Papaw, who moved from Kentucky to Ohio in hopes of escaping poverty and securing a better future. Despite their attempts, the family continues to struggle with various issues across generations.2. **Childhood Experiences**: Vance describes a turbulent childhood marked by his mother's addiction problems and a series of her romantic partners. He highlights the significant role his grandmother, Mamaw, plays in providing him stability and guidance.3. **Education and Escape**: Amidst family chaos, Vance finds solace and guidance in education. His decision to join the Marines after high school becomes a turning point, providing him discipline and a sense of direction.4. **Higher Education and Reflections**: After the Marines, Vance attends Ohio State University and later Yale Law School, where he confronts his cultural identity and feels a divide between his Appalachian upbringing and the elite environment.5. **Career and Adult Life**: Vance discusses his life post-education, including reflections on his Appalachian heritage, the disintegration of his community in Ohio, and his views on the broader socio-economic issues facing the white working-class.**Character Development:**- **J.D. Vance**: The main evolution seen in Vance is his transformation from a troubled youth to a successful law graduate. This change is largely credited to the role models in his life, especially his grandmother, and his own decisions like joining the Marines.- **Mamaw (Bonnie Vance)**: She is a fierce and strong-willed woman who significantly influences Vance's life. Despite her rough exterior and tough love approach, her wisdom and care provide J.D. the stability needed to navigate his challenging circumstances.- **Bev (Vance's mother)**: Her character serves as a cautionary tale about the destructive impact of addiction and instability on families. Although she loves her children, her battles with addiction and her series of relationships...

The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, and then the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, sided with the school district. JD Vance headlined another extraordinary night at the RNC. Donald's granddaughter Kai shared her experience of grandpa. A sweet, thoughtful Donald who checks on her grades, brags to his friends about her, calls her during her school day and sneaks her candy and soda when her parents aren't looking. The Gold Star families, parents and relatives of the fallen 13 at Abbey Gate, shared the same sentiment. President Trump spent 6 hours with a grieving mother, knew all of their names and shared the burden and grief the family was experiencing. A stark contrast to a Joe Biden that refuses to acknowledge the fallen 13 and checked his watch during a moment they were meant to be honored. Finally, JD Vance headlined, sharing a heart-warming story of his grandmother "Mamaw" and his mother's battle with addiction, getting clean and celebrating 10 years of sobriety. She cried tears of joy as she proudly listened to her son. JD also set the tone on a new Republican party, one not tarnished with the Bush-Cheney endless war reputation. A Republican party and administration that only uses its strength when necessary. Our amazing panel gives their thoughts on the night and the continued fallout in the Democratic party. Biden tested positive for COVID and retreated to Delaware. Will he use this moment to drop out of the race? Tonight is the finale of the RNC and President Trump is headlining. Stay around till the end as I share who I think will be a surprise guest tonight. Our 100th episode! We started this podcast shortly after Bryce's 5th birthday more than four years ago. We don't usually have guests but thought having Bryce's grandmother (Mamaw) on the show would be special, since she has two grandsons on the autism spectrum. We also recap our week and some "parent fail" feelings that Sandy experienced. Bryce is a funny, mechanical, HAPPY little guy who was diagnosed with autism at age two and is now nine years old. His pure joy makes this world a much better place! If you are enjoying the show, please take a quick moment to give us a rating and review to help other families find our podcast, too. We are humbled and honored to follow our calling and be Autism Ambassadors while helping others understand our world a little more than they did before listening to the podcast. We also feel called to bring light to a community that has experienced dark days after the "diagnosis".
