Have you ever considered the fact that Christians have a real influence on how other people relate to God's revealed Word? What kind of influence are you having among those you know?Dr. John Whitcomb challenges us today with the example shown by the Apostle Paul, as he continues his series called "God's Truth Circles"—here on "Encounter God's Truth."Dr. Whitcomb turns to Paul to show that he followed the model that Christ displayed during His earthly ministry.Following the lesson, host Wayne Shepherd followed up with a question to Dr. Whitcomb, asking how Paul's various relationships within Judaism tied to his unique role as "the apostle of the Gentiles" (Rom. 11:13).God's Word is true from the beginning to the end! Thank you for listening to it today here on "Encounter God's Truth" – and please share this program with a friend.

Gospel Mark 16:15-18 Jesus appeared to the Eleven and said to them: "Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages. They will pick up serpents with their hands, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Reflection Baptism is the symbol of what happened to Jesus as he began his ministry, the Holy Spirit, descending into him. That's what salvation is all about. About God living inside of us. And when we have that power within us, we do things that we could never imagine doing. We can actually drive out demons, speak new languages, deal with things that are destructive, that won't destroy us, and we have a healing power within us. That's what salvation is. It's not getting into heaven. Condemning is being not going to hell necessarily, but it's whether we live a life of rich fullness or whether we live a life of emptiness. Closing Prayer Father, to believe is a gift. It is not something that we have the capacity to do. All we need to do is to say, I long to. I want to. I choose to believe in you. And when that happens, then there is a flood of energy in life that flows into us. And then we know what it feels like to be a believer. The lack of anxiety, the lack of shame, the lack of fear. It's a gift. And all we need to do is to say yes when it is offered. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen.

+ Holy Gospel, Acts 22: 3 – 16 "I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought up in this city. At the feet of Gamaliel I was educated strictly in our ancestral law and was zealous for God, just as all of you are today. I persecuted this Way to death, binding both men and women and delivering them to prison. Even the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify on my behalf. For from them I even received letters to the brothers and set out for Damascus to bring back to Jerusalem in chains for punishment those there as well. "On that journey as I drew near to Damascus, about noon a great light from the sky suddenly shone around me. I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, 'Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?' I replied, 'Who are you, sir?' And he said to me, 'I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are persecuting.' My companions saw the light but did not hear the voice of the one who spoke to me. I asked, 'What shall I do, sir?' The Lord answered me, 'Get up and go into Damascus, and there you will be told about everything appointed for you to do.' Since I could see nothing because of the brightness of that light, I was led by hand by my companions and entered Damascus. "A certain Ananias, a devout observer of the law, and highly spoken of by all the Jews who lived there, came to me and stood there and said, 'Saul, my brother, regain your sight.' And at that very moment I regained my sight and saw him. Then he said, 'The God of our ancestors designated you to know his will, to see the Righteous One, and to hear the sound of his voice; for you will be his witness before all to what you have seen and heard. Now, why delay? Get up and have yourself baptized and your sins washed away, calling upon his name.' The Gospel of the Lord

“Saul, my brother, the Lord has sent me, Jesus who appeared to you on the way by which you came, that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 9:17Saint Paul (who in Hebrew was known as Saul of Tarsus) was a devout Jewish Pharisee who vigorously defended the law. After Jesus' Ascension into Heaven, the newfound Christian faith began to grow rapidly. As a result, Saul of Tarsus vigorously tried to end this new religion which he perceived as erroneous. He traveled about looking for followers of Jesus to arrest and imprison. Saul even gave his consent to the stoning of the deacon, Saint Stephen, the first martyr. However, on one of his journeys, Saul had a vision of the risen Christ Who spoke to him gently, saying, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” (Acts 9:4). It was in that encounter that Saul was left blinded for three days. The line quoted above are the words of Ananias, a devout disciple of Jesus. Ananias had also received a vision from Jesus Who told him to go to Saul of Tarsus and to lay his hands on him so that he would be healed. Ananias was also told that Saul was “a chosen instrument” through which the Gospel would be preached to the “Gentiles, kings, and children of Israel.”Though there are many fascinating aspects to the story of Saint Paul and his conversion, it is also inspiring to reflect upon the way in which God first converted him. Jesus was not harsh with Saul. He was not condemning. Instead, he saw the goodness and vigor of Saul and knew that he would respond if he were given the opportunity. Though Jesus used the powerful action of striking him blind, He did so because He saw so much potential for good within Saul. This same truth applies to our lives. Each one of us has incredible potential for good, and God does see this. God is aware of all that He can do with us and is seeking to draw us into His mission of sharing the Gospel with those in need. The question to ponder is whether or not you have responded to the ways that God has spoken to you and invited you to serve Him with your life. Saul's encounter with Jesus was powerful and transforming not only because he was blinded by this vision—it was powerful and transforming, first and foremost, because Saul wanted to serve God but was trying to do so in an erroneous way. And once that error was corrected, Saul responded in an immediate and complete way. As a result, Saul became one of the greatest evangelists in the history of the Church.Reflect, today, upon the desire in the heart of Jesus to invite you into His mission. Though you may be unaware of the many ways God can use you, Jesus is fully aware. He sees all of your gifts and knows who He wants to draw to Himself through you. Say “Yes” to Him this day and do so with every fiber of your soul. Doing so will allow God to do great things through you. Lord, I do love You and desire to be used by You in the way that You choose. Help me to convert my heart more fully to You so that I can be led by Your gentle and powerful hand. I accept whatever mission You give to me and pray that my life will give You true glory and further Your glorious Kingdom on earth. Jesus, I trust in You. Delivered by Marsha Callista and Jesson Jons Lesmana from Saint Peter's School Jakarta in Archdiocese of Jakarta, Indonesia. Acts of the Apostles 22: 3-16; Rs psalm 117: 1.2; Mark 16: 15-18 WHEN THE EYES OPEN   The theme for our meditation today is: When the Eyes Open. We want to explain this theme from two points of view. From a physical point of view it shows how the two eyes open and able to see around with pleasure. Another point of view is the spiritual one which deals with certain mental or spiritual ability. A spiritual sight of course, goes beyond the physical eyes that occurs through the help of the divine power.   At the moment of Saint Paul's conversion that we celebrate today as a his feast day we witness two abilities of seeing from the apostle Paul himself. The two viewpoints are certainly different but in many ways they must need and support each other. We want to reflect on how the two complement each other.   We want that our eyes remain healthy and to function well in seeing. The function of our eyes is not only to see things or people at a time and in a place. Besides we can see what is around us, there should be also awareness and sensitivity within us that are able to collect data then to be directly processed by the mind and accepted by the heart. The next process would be the decisions we make to justify what we have seen to be something good, right, wrong, good, beautiful, challenging, or dangerous.   These outcomes of our sight and our awareness of them are to be illuminated by the gift of faith and guided of the Holy Spirit, in which we can see it again in a deeper process, namely seeing and understanding with spiritual ability. So our physical eyes prepares data or material for a process of the spiritual eyes, which ultimately brings about a new truth. We can just imagine, if our physical eyes are not able to justify something to a good one, for example on the choosing a vocation for life, then the spiritual process of this choice will not happen as expected.   Likewise, the spiritual sight and understanding really need the ability of the physical sight so that the goodness and truth of faith can be well put into practice. We know well that mercy, brotherhood, and generosity are very noble virtues that the Lord wants us to practice them in our life. How can we practice them rightly and fairly, if the eyes of our bodies are not open to a sinful person to be forgiven, a sick person to be comforted, or a person desperate to be given hope! So the eyes of mind or the eyes of faith really needs the eyes of the body to help our faith grow healthy and useful.   The two functions of our eyes help each other. This is just one simple advice that can be meaningful to us: let us use our eyes of the body properly and correctly, because it is the la porta, or the door that gives us way to come to God.   Let's pray. In the name of the Father. O Jesus Christ, may our eyes not bring us into sin but always look upon the glory of God in us and around us. Glory  to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit ... In the name of the Father ... --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/media-la-porta/message

Doing so will allow God to do great things through you.Lord, I do love You and desire to be used by You in the way that You choose. Help me to convert my heart more fully to You so that I can be led by Your gentle and powerful hand. I accept whatever mission You give to me and pray that my life will give You true glory and further Your glorious Kingdom on earth. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2023 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

Do you ever find that you're struggling with anger? Fr. Eric speaks about this challenging topic by addressing the role of emotions in the spiritual life, anger from the perspective of St. Thomas Aquinas, and practical tips to how to move forward if we experience feelings of anger in our lives. As a key example, Fr. Eric refers to a movie called "Paul: Apostle of Christ" (2018). Here is a link to the trailler for the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LyOqQZUDdO4. The Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul, ApostleJanuary 25—FeastLiturgical Color: WhitePatron Saint of missionaries, evangelists, writers and public workersOne man can change the worldIn the long history of the Church no conversion has been more consequential than St. Paul's. Paul had not been ambivalent toward the Church before he converted. He had actively persecuted it, even throwing rocks at the head of St. Stephen, in all likelihood. But he changed, or God changed him, on one particular night. And on that night Christianity changed too. And when the course of Christianity changed, the world changed. It is difficult to overemphasize the impact of today's feast. One way to think about the significance of an event, whether big small, is to consider what things would be like if the event had never occurred. This is the premise behind the movie “It's a Wonderful Life.” You compare actual life with a hypothetical “what if” alternative scenario. What if St. Paul had remained a zealous jew? What if he had never converted? Never wrote one letter? Never travelled the seas on missionary voyages? It can safely be assumed that the world itself, not just the Church, would look different than it does today. Perhaps Christianity would have remained confined to Palestine for many more centuries before breaking out into wider Europe. Maybe Christianity would have taken a right turn instead of a left, and all of China and India would be as culturally Catholic as Europe is today. It's impossible to say. But the global scale of the effects of Paul's conversion speak to the significance of his conversion. Some conversions are dramatic, some are boring. Some are instantaneous, some are gradual. Augustine heard a boy in a garden repeating “Take and Read” and knew the time had come. Saint Francis of Assisi heard Christ say from the cross “Rebuild My Church” and responded with his life. Dr. Bernard Nathanson, the father of abortion in the United States, renounced, repudiated, and repented of his life's work and searched for a real Church to forgive his real sins. He ultimately bowed his head to receive the waters of baptism. The details of Paul's conversion are well known. He was thrown from his horse on the road to Damascus (except that Acts makes no mention of a horse). Maybe he just fell down while walking. While stunned on the ground Paul heard the voice of Jesus: “Why are you persecuting me?” Not “Why are you persecuting my followers.” Jesus and the Church are clearly one. To persecute the Church is to persecute Christ. Jesus is the head and the Church is his body. Paul did not convert to loving Jesus and say that the Church was just an accidental human construct that blocked him from the Lord. No, of course not. He believed what right minded Catholics have believed for centuries and still believe today. To love Jesus is to love the Church and vice versa. It is impossible to love the Lord while disregarding the historical reality of how the Lord is communicated to us. The Church is not just a vehicle to carry God's revelation. The Church is actually part of God's revelation.Paul's conversion teaches us that when Jesus come to us, He doesn't come alone. He comes with His angels, saints, priests, and bishops. He comes with Mary, the sacraments, doctrine, and devotions. He comes with the Church because he and the Church are one. And when we go to the Lord we don't go alone either. We go as members of a Church into whose mystical body we were baptized. Thus St. Paul heard from God Himself, and thus we believe today.St. Paul, we ask your openness to conversion when we hear the Lord speak to us as He spoke to you. Assist us in responding with great faith to every invitation we receive to love the Lord more fully, to know Him more deeply, and to spread his word more broadly to those who need it.

The Apostle to the Gentiles.  The Apostle Paul**Note**  Be sure to watch the last list item #10 as that is the most important. Was Paul a mere man?  Well, Yes and No. Yes, Paul was a man in the flesh. And No, Paul was also a prominent spiritual leader in God's plan for the ages. We're going to look at several passages about Paul and make a list from scripture of God's purpose for Saul of Tarsus, the apostle Paul. But first I want to say this. We do we worship Paul!  We worship the risen, glorified Lord Jesus Christ, Period. We do not worship Paul, in fact we worship no man after the flesh, not even Jesus.
