Do you know what it feels like to be underrepresented? Although it is 2021, Women still face gender inequalities when choosing to study or work in fields like Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). While gender stereotypes and gender bias seem to drive girls and women away from pursuing STEM related degrees, women are resilient and persistent. This podcast highlights women throughout the world in the realm of STEM and allows them to tell their stories of the inequality they've faced and to also put a spotlight on their fascinating work. This is a weekly podcast interviewing women throughout the world. We look forward to you tuning it!

    Siria Ysabel Bojorquez is a first generation, highest ranking, cum laude honors bachelor's degree graduate from Texas Tech University. She also holds a Master's in Green Energy, Management, and Corporate Social Responsibility from Università Bocconi in Milan, Italy.  Her former employer positions include, working for the US Department of Education under TRIO, working as an environmental and international policy intern for former congressman Beto O'Rourke, and being a PBS Kid's Club TV Host (where she directed and stared in educational science clips). She has held several pageant titles all of which originated from her passion for sustainability. United Nations and Peace Corp Representative for 24th World Miss University, Miss Teen Earth United States (2010), Miss Earth United States (2012), Miss Lubbock Texas USA (2014), Miss Multiverse (2016) and Miss Sun City for Miss Texas USA (2021).    She has had several research publications including one on the United States Agency for International Development's Food Aid program and the Environmental Services Department in Texas.     Gabrielle Sousa is a Brazilian living in Berlin, Germany. She moved to Bonn, Germany where she pursued her second masters in Governance and Regulations at the University of Bonn where her international experience truly began. After her studies, she focused on a career in ESG, Environmental, Social, and Governance topics, where she worked not only for the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) but other international organizations as well. Currently, she is working on sustainability topics within the renewable energy industry.     Mary-Kate Smith holds a Bachelors and a Masters in Aerospace Engineering from Mississippi State University. She specializes in Mission Design and Digital Engineering. She has worked in NASA Mission Control supporting the astronauts on the International Space Station, developed digital engineering structures for drones, and has climbed around Navy submarines supporting Mission operations for Trident Missiles at Lockheed Martin. Currently she works at Emergent Space Technologies as an aerospace engineer continuing her digital engineering work. She is passionate about STEM outreach and has recently started a YouTube series called TheRocketeerLady, where she tells stories of her experience as a woman in industry.     Rachel Stottmann is a Civil/Environmental engineering student at the University ofLouisville's JB Speed School of Engineering. Rachel will graduate in May 2022 with her secondBachelor's degree. She previously graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in drawing and painting. Rachel is a huge proponent for the outdoors and has started a project called “Tread the Red” that focuses on the Red River Gorge in Kentucky. Her love for the outdoors and hiking were key in her decision to continue her educationin the world of Civil/Environmental engineering and also her sole purpose for creating Tread the Red. The project has been an outlet for her to share her experiences at Red River Gorge and highlight stories of the people who make up the amazing community.     Chien-Shiung Wu & Grace Hopper - Physics and Computer Science

    Tune in this week to hear  the stories of Chien-Shiung Wu and Grace Hopper. These women have taken part in forging a way for women in the STEM field and allowing women today to do what we love. Chien-Shiung Wu was a Chinese American particle and experimental physicist and she made significant contributions in the fields of nuclear and particle physics. Grace Brewster Murray Hopper was an American computer scientist and United States Navy rear admiral who made contributions to programming Mark I, II, and III. She also developed along with her team the first computer language "compiler" and  coined the phrase "debugging" as she was taking apart Mark 2 with her team and found a moth, hence "debugging" the computer. Tune into this two-part series to hear their remarkable stories and how they forged a path for women in the STEM field. Without women like Chien-Shiung Wu and Grace Hopper fighting for their place and indirectly the place of all women in the STEM field we could have been stuck in a society where women weren't allowed to contribute.     Meet Ndidi Edeh- Larberg, a Maternal and Child Health Epidemiologist for Summit County Public Health Department. She comes with experience in investigating and advising other health officials, government, and communities on birth outcomes. In addition to working at the Summit Country Public Health Department, she is also currently working on her PhD to determine if racism is the root cause for poor birth outcomes for African American women. We discuss heavy topics like infant fatality, embedded racism in women's health, and different programs families can apply for with some facts you probably didn't know.     Biomedical Engineering - Ti'Air Riggins

    I'm so excited to introduce to you Ti'Air Riggins, a Biomedical Engineering PhD candidate at Michigan State University. Ti' investigates implantable electrodes to tune immune responses in the brain, (AMAZING!) in the REIL lab under the direction of Dr. Erin Purcell. She is a current NIH F99/K00 fellow and was named a fellow in the Society for Neuroscience from 2016-2018. Additionally, she is in the speaker's bureau for the Rape and Incest National Network.     Welcome to the first episode of Mind your STEM! Our first episode focuses on Alyssa Flynn. She works in the technology field, more specifically the broadcast industry. She was born and raised in Canada where she obtained a diploma in Television Broadcasting and received a certificate in Digital Post Production at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, Canada. After graduation, she worked in post production facilities, dubbing houses, and broadcast centers, as well as working on live sporting events.
