NEW BOOK -- The Price of Becoming Buy it -- www.LearningLeader.com/Becoming The Learning Leader Show with Ryan Hawk This is brought to you by Insight Global. If you need to hire one person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world has the hustle and grit to deliver. Jim Collins is the author of some of the most influential business books ever written — Good to Great, Built to Last, and Great by Choice. His concepts have become part of the leadership vocabulary. Level 5 Leadership. The Flywheel. First Who, Then What. The Hedgehog Concept. He spent more than a decade at Stanford as a professor and has advised CEOs, four-star generals, and heads of state. His new book is What to Make of a Life: Cliffs, Fog, Fire, and the Self-Knowledge Imperative. It is the product of ten years of research and is the most personal thing he has ever written. We flew to Boulder, Colorado, to record this one in person with Jim. Key Learnings Jim's grandfather wrote his own death story. Jimmy Collins was a test pilot in the 1930s. He told Jim's grandmother, Dolores, that if he died, she should pull the last chapter from his desk and publish it. He died in a test crash. After the service, she pulled out the chapter. The title was "I'm Dead." The last chapter, written in first person, described the plane coming out of the sky, the screaming wings, the crash. The final words, by his own pen: "I am dead now." For seven decades, his grandmother never cried. When Jim asked her in her nineties to tell the story of his grandfather, she cried and said, "Thank you for that. I've never cried before." She'd been a single mom in the middle of the Depression. Of all the things Jim feels good about in his life, asking her to tell that story before she died at almost 100 years old is one he's most proud of. A cliff is an event that alters the trajectory of your life and forces you to reconstruct everything that comes after. Jim's first big cliff: he lost his father while his father was still alive. Jim's father took the family to San Francisco in the 1960s. They lived a few houses down from Haight Street. When a man was shot dead on their doorstep, Jim's mom moved them to Boulder. They lived in a cold basement with cots and a hot plate. They couldn't afford a Christmas tree, so Jim and his brother rolled a boulder into the basement and called it their Christmas rock. The Greyhound bus moment. In high school, Jim took a Thanksgiving turkey on a Greyhound bus down to New Mexico, where his father was living in an adobe hut with a dirt floor. He had this romantic vision: they'd cook the turkey, share Thanksgiving, bond as father and son. The whole weekend, his father had no interest in him. He spent it trying to convince Jim to convince his grandmother to give him money. On the bus ride home, looking out the window into the fog, Jim realized: there will never, ever be a father there. No male role models. No frameworks. No guidance. "I've got this one life. What do I do with it?" The inflection point in Jim's life is Joanne. They got engaged four days after their first date. He'd admired her from afar for years but never had the courage to ask her out. Once they were together, Jim began a conscious process: I need to become a person worthy of being married to her. He didn't know exactly what that meant or how to get there. But he knew that was the work. Forty-six years later, it's still a never-ending journey. What Joanne does brilliantly: she sees what needs attention. Jim is encoded to hear it. Someone once asked Joanne what she thought Jim's greatest strength was. She said: "Jim takes critical feedback better than any person I've ever met." Joanne sees what needs attention. Jim hears it. Then they adapt and adjust. That's the inner flywheel of their marriage. Circle the wagons together. Guns pointing out, never at each other. When life gets really difficult, whether it's disease or other cliffs. You are always together. Always on the inside of the wagons. Never aimed at each other. Joanne won the 1985 Hawaii Ironman by 92 seconds. With a hamstring injury that limited her running training to 16 miles a week, she came off the bike with a 10-minute lead. Then mile by mile, the lead shrank. Nine minutes. Eight. Seven. With a few miles left, she stopped in the middle of the lava field, massaging her legs, almost pleading with them to run. She looked up at the sky. Then her gaze fixed somewhere down the road. She started to run. You're racing for self-respect. Joanne told Jim afterward: in the end, you're racing to know that you couldn't have run a step faster. Only you'll know. If you know you couldn't have run a step faster, that's actually winning. When Jim writes, he's on the lava fields. When he finishes a book, he wants to know he couldn't have written one sentence better. When you're on the lava fields, this is the moment you want to quit. Don't. Writing is thinking. When the writing isn't working, the thinking isn't clear. Go back to the data. Find the through-line. There are three types of luck: What luck. A cancer diagnosis. A guitar left in an empty house. An event that breaks your way. Who luck. The people who walk into your life. Joanne. Morten Hansen. Jerry Porras. Bill Lazier. Zeit luck. When what you're doing intersects with the surrounding zeitgeist. Jimmy Page was in Surrey when the British rock explosion happened. Luck is an event you didn't cause, with significant consequences, and an element of surprise. The big winners weren't luckier. They had a higher return on luck. What you do with luck events matters more than the luck itself. Bill Lazier: the closest thing to a father Jim ever had. Jim ended up in Bill's class at Stanford because the class he was trying to take was full. The random course-sorting mechanism threw him into the first class Bill ever taught. Pure WHO luck. Jim did not cause that.  Discover your encodings. An encoding is a durable capacity of your intrinsic construction that resides within, awaiting discovery through the experiences of life.  Jim has done over 300 online courses on every imaginable subject. Constitutional law. Napoleon. World War I. The history of China. He started them to learn how to teach. Then his curiosity took over. That's what an encoding looks like in the wild. You have a constellation of encodings. Like stars. When your life captures a bright set of those encodings, you're in frame. When it doesn't, you're out of frame. The same person can look amazing in frame and not very amazing out of frame. The most important finding from this book: don't follow anyone else's advice. Their advice is well-meaning. It may have worked beautifully for them. But it worked for them because it flowed from their encodings. And their encodings are not your encodings. Barbara McClintock and Grace Hopper. Two women who won the Nobel Prize and shaped computer science. McClintock was encoded for solitary work. She didn't even have a phone. She heard about her Nobel Prize on the radio. Hopper was encoded to work through people. She kept a pirate flag in her office and once stole furniture for her team in the middle of the night. Two completely different encodings. What they shared: their lives were in alignment with their encodings. Leadership is the art of getting people to want to do what must be done. It's not a trait. It's a choice. Anyone in any organization can lead, depending on their desire to make a difference. Nobody needs to wait for a title. Ryan's encoding is "the relentless persistence of invitation." Jim observed that Ryan has incredible encodings for what he'd describe as attractive persistence. Not pushy. Not aggressive. But persistent and welcoming. The invitation never goes away. The way you lead should be different from everyone else. Because you are encoded differently. Trust your encodings, not their playbook. Roger Sherman saved the U.S. Constitution. Twice. He created the bicameral legislature compromise. He insisted the Bill of Rights be amendments, not rewrites. Yet most people don't know his name. He almost never spoke. He listened in committees and waited for the precise moment to introduce just the right point to turn American history. Quiet. Behind the scenes. Uncharismatic. Unglamorous. Enormously effective. That was his encoding. You should largely ignore what other successful leaders did. It's marvelous to listen to. It might give you ideas. But everything that worked for them reflected their encodings, not yours. The work isn't to copy their playbook. The work is to discover your encodings and trust them. The color of Jim's fire changed. When he was younger, his fuel was rage, fury, and a sense of terror with no safety net. He used to worry that if he ever lost it, he'd lose his drive. What replaced it was a different kind of fire: the joy of curiosity, of being lost in giant projects, of marvelous conversations, of sharing what he's learned. His drive is higher than ever. It just feels a lot better now. The 3x3 reflective practice. After almost any conversation, teaching moment, or significant interaction, Jim writes down three things that went well and three things he could have done better. He's done it for years. He's now systematizing it. He doesn't pause to celebrate. He pauses to learn quickly and move on. At the top of Jim's notes for this conversation: "The biggest reminder for today, reconnecting with an old friend." That's the celebration. What could be a better celebration than reconnecting with somebody you've had marvelous conversations with? Reflection Questions What is your most significant cliff? What did you reconstruct on the other side, and what are you still rebuilding? What are your encodings? Not what you've been told you should be, but what genuinely flows from your intrinsic construction. When have you felt most in frame? Like Jim with Joanne, is there a person or purpose you are actively trying to become worthy of? What would that work look like this week? I don't want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran! – @realDonaldTrump (Apr 07, 2026, 6:06 AM) Based on conversations with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir, of Pakistan, and wherein they requested that I hold off the destructive force being sent tonight to Iran, and subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE! The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East. We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate. Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated. On behalf of the United States of America, as President, and also representing the Countries of the Middle East, it is an Honor to have this Longterm problem close to resolution. Dann Minidisc. Opa Kolb in Hochform. Star Trek in Neon. Die 70er explodierten in Buntheit. Und irgendwann wurde die Zukunft weiß. Kubricks weißer Raum in „2001". Slick, glatt, organisch.

John is joined by Spencer Collins, Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer of Arm Holdings, the UK-based semiconductor design firm known for powering over 99% of smartphones globally with its energy-efficient CPU designs.  They discuss the legal challenges that arise from Arm's unique position in the semiconductor industry. Arm has a unique business model, centered on licensing intellectual property rather than manufacturing processors. This model is evolving as Arm considers moving “up the stack,” potentially entering into processor production to compete more directly in the AI hardware space.  Since its $31 billion acquisition by SoftBank in 2016, Arm has seen tremendous growth, culminating in an IPO in 2023 at a $54 billion valuation and its market value nearly doubling since.AI is a major strategic focus for Arm, as its CPUs are increasingly central to AI processing in cloud and edge environments.  Arm's high-profile AI projects include Nvidia's Grace Hopper superchip and Microsoft's new AI server chips, both of which rely heavily on Arm CPU cores.   Arm is positioned to be a key infrastructure player in AI's future based on its broad customer base, the low power consumption of its semiconductors, and their extensive security features. Nvidia's proposed $40 billion acquisition of ARM collapsed due to regulatory pushback in the U.S., Europe, and China.  This led SoftBank to pivot to taking 10% of Arm public.  Arm is now aggressively strengthening its intellectual property strategy, expanding patent filings, and upgrading legal operations to better protect its innovations in the AI space.Spencer describes his own career path—from law firm M&A work to a leadership role at SoftBank's Vision Fund, where he worked on deals like the $7.7 billion Uber investment—culminating in his current post.   He suggests that general counsel for major tech firms must be intellectually agile, invest in best-in-class advisors, and maintain geopolitical awareness to navigate today's rapidly changing legal and regulatory landscape.Podcast Link: Law-disrupted.fmHost: John B. More importantly, how big of a donation will the loser have to make to breast cancer awareness? Also, a special shoutout to our sponsor, Rise & Grind Coffee and their Suffrage Blend – a medium roast sourced from women-owned farms that supports literacy programs. Subscribe for Exclusive Content or to DonateContact Us:Frank: contempconserv@gmail.comReid: contempconserv2@gmail.comFollow Us on Twitter X @contempconservFollow Us on Truth Social @contempconservOur Links:The Wicky Wacky Radio Show on Red CircleThe Wicky Wacky Radio Show on YoutubeConservative Conversations PodcastConservative Conversations on YoutubeSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/contemporary-conservative-audio/exclusive-content

The Mystery Behind Large Graphs

Our guest in this episode is David Tench, a Grace Hopper postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, who specializes in scalable graph algorithms and compression techniques to tackle massive datasets. In this episode, we will learn how his techniques enable real-time analysis of large datasets, such as particle tracking in physics experiments or social network analysis, by reducing storage requirements while preserving critical structural properties. David also challenges the common belief that giant graphs are sparse by pointing to a potential bias: Maybe because of the challenges that exist in analyzing large dense graphs, we only see datasets of sparse graphs? The truth is out there… David encourages you to reach out to him if you have a large scale graph application that you don't currently have the capacity to deal with using your current methods and your current hardware. He promises to "look for the hammer that might help you with your nail".

In this episode of The 5G Factor, our series that focuses on all things across the 5G ecosystem, we review key 5G ecosystem developments including T-Mobile's $4.4 billion acquisition of UScellular's wireless operations, NVIDIA kicking P5G tires, AI-RAN Alliance considerations, and what Fortinet's cybersecurity portfolio brings to wireless/mobility environments. Our analytical review drilled down on: T-Mobile Acquires UScellular Wireless Operations: Good News for Rural Users. T-Mobile will pay approximately $4.4 billion for the assets being acquired from UScellular in the transaction that combines cash and up to $2.0 billion in debt to be assumed by T-Mobile. Upon closing, T-Mobile's 5G network will expand to serve UScellular customers, especially those in underserved rural areas, by moving from a roaming experience outside of the UScellular coverage areas to nationwide access. We explore why the additional capacity and coverage generated by the combination of T-Mobile/UScellular spectrum and wireless assets and capabilities can stimulate competition for wireless services across rural areas, particularly in relation to Verizon and AT&T service offerings as well as help reduce the digital divide.  Private 5G Momentum: NVIDIA Kicks Tires and AI Considerations. The June 2024 Top500 supercomputer list was released at ISC 2024, and there is a lot to unpack. The latest Top 500 Supercomputers list highlights significant trends in the supercomputing landscape, as NVIDIA takes 7 spots with Grace-based systems, including 3 of the top 20. Although the balance between Intel and AMD remains static, there is a shift towards co-packaged CPUs and accelerators just as Intel announces they will sunset Ponte Vecchio, their entry in this space, and skip the next generation. Interestingly, HPE was a big winner here, leading in new systems and enabling 8 of the 10 Grace and MI300A entrants. And we see Arm well-represented here, with 8 new servers on the list. On this episode of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast, we dive into how AI technology is being used to combat illegal fishing, ultimately reducing the risks migrants from Africa face when crossing into Europe. Discover the innovative work of Dyhia Belhabib from Algeria, who has revolutionized enforcement against illegal fishing practices. Tune in to learn more about the impact of her efforts. Link to the article: https://www.popsci.com/technology/ai-marine-conservation/ AI technology is revolutionizing the fight against illegal fishing activities, a critical issue with far-reaching implications beyond marine conservation. As highlighted in the podcast episode, individuals like Dahia Belhabib showcase how AI can effectively combat illegal fishing. By developing sophisticated AI-powered databases like Spyglass and utilizing tools such as the GRACE AI risk assessment tool, authorities can now track vessel movements in real-time and predict the likelihood of environmental crimes at sea. Reducing illegal fishing activities is crucial not only for protecting marine ecosystems but also for the livelihoods of artisanal fishers in African countries. These fishers rely on sustainable fishing practices to support their families, and illegal fishing depletes fish stocks, leaving them without a viable source of income. This often leads to dangerous migration of African migrants to other countries, risking their lives on overcrowded boats. By leveraging AI technology to crack down on illegal fishing, the goal is to create a more sustainable fishing industry that allows local fishers to thrive in their communities. Preserving fish stocks through effective enforcement enables artisanal fishers to continue their traditional practices and provide for their families without needing to migrate for better opportunities. This not only safeguards marine biodiversity but also addresses the root causes of migration, ultimately reducing the risks associated with dangerous migration routes. The use of AI technology in monitoring and tracking illegal fishing activities is a powerful tool in the global fight against this issue. By enhancing surveillance capabilities and enabling real-time data analysis, authorities can more effectively detect and apprehend rogue fishing vessels. This proactive approach not only protects marine resources but also contributes to the safety and well-being of African migrants who might otherwise undertake perilous journeys in search of a better life. Dahiya Belhabib, a remarkable woman from Algeria, has made significant strides in combating illegal fishing by harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI). Belhabib's innovative approach involves creating a comprehensive database to monitor criminal activities of industrial fishing vessels. This database, known as Spyglass, is the world's largest registry of criminal history related to illegal fishing operations. Belhabib's journey began with her doctoral research, which revealed the alarming extent of illegal fishing activities supplying Chinese and European markets. Recognizing the urgent need for action, she established the Spyglass database. This initiative has revolutionized the enforcement of illegal fishing laws by providing real-time tracking of vessel movements and identifying potential environmental crimes at sea. Through her collaboration with co-founder Sogol Godin, Belhabib developed an AI-powered risk assessment tool named GRACE, in honor of the pioneering coder Grace Hopper. This tool predicts the likelihood of environmental crimes committed by vessels, enabling authorities to take proactive measures against illegal fishing activities. By leveraging AI technology and customized monitoring systems, Belhabib's efforts have significantly enhanced the effectiveness of policing marine crimes and criminal vessels. Belhabib's dedication and entrepreneurial spirit have transformed marine conservation and paved the way for a more sustainable future. Her work exemplifies the impact individuals can have in safeguarding oceans and protecting ecosystems. Through her pioneering use of AI, Belhabib continues to lead the charge in combating illegal fishing and preserving marine biodiversity for future generations. The Role of AI in Enhancing Illegal Fishing Monitoring and Enforcement The episode highlights the groundbreaking work of Dahia Belhabib, who has leveraged AI technology to combat illegal fishing activities. By combining AI with real-time data processing, Belhabib has revolutionized the tracking and monitoring of illegal fishing vessels. This innovative approach has the potential to significantly enhance enforcement efforts and ultimately lead to the elimination of illegal fishing in the future. Belhabib's creation of the Marine Crimes database, powered by AI algorithms like Ada and GRACE, has enabled the tracking of vessel movements in real-time. By utilizing signals from marine traffic transponders and other monitoring technologies, her team can predict the risk of environmental crimes at sea. This proactive approach allows for the identification of vessels engaged in illegal fishing activities, providing law enforcement agencies with the necessary information to intervene promptly. Moreover, the collaboration with organizations like Global Fishing Watch and the use of satellite imagery have further strengthened monitoring capabilities. By visualizing global fishing activities and sharing data in near real-time, authorities can target suspect vessels and apprehend rogue fishing operations. This comprehensive approach, backed by advanced AI technology, has the potential to transform the landscape of illegal fishing enforcement. The episode emphasizes the importance of AI in processing vast amounts of data efficiently and accurately. With the ability to analyze and interpret data in real-time, AI technology can facilitate quicker decision-making and response to illegal fishing incidents. By triangulating vessel positions and predicting routes, authorities can enhance their surveillance efforts and increase the likelihood of apprehending illegal fishing vessels. Overall, the integration of AI with real-time data processing represents a significant advancement in the fight against illegal fishing. By harnessing the power of technology to track, monitor, and enforce regulations, stakeholders can work towards the ultimate goal of eliminating illegal fishing activities. Dahia Belhabib's pioneering work serves as a testament to the transformative potential of AI in marine conservation and enforcement efforts.

I sit down for a thought-provoking conversation with Kim Crawley, author of "Hacker Culture: A to Z." The discussion serves as a comprehensive guide to understanding the complexities of hacker culture, cybersecurity, and the ever-changing landscape of technology. The episode begins with Kim demystifying the dark web, a term often laden with negative connotations. While it's true that the dark web is a breeding ground for illegal activities such as drug trafficking and cybercrime, Kim points out that it's also a refuge for political dissidents and whistleblowers. This perspective adds a layer of nuance to the conventional narrative, encouraging listeners to view the dark web as a more multifaceted domain. As the conversation progresses, Kim expresses her reservations about the increasing demand for user identification on social media platforms like Twitter. She argues that such requirements could potentially infringe on the anonymity that many users rely on, particularly those who use these platforms as a means to speak out against oppressive regimes or to act as whistleblowers. This leads her to discuss her migration to alternative social media platforms like Mastodon and Blue Sky, which offer more privacy and less centralized control. The dialogue then shifts to the historical aspects of computer programming. Kim highlights the seminal contributions of figures like Grace Hopper, Ada Lovelace, and Margaret Hamilton, emphasizing that the field of technology is built on collective intelligence rather than individual genius. This segues into a discussion of Kim's other book, "Agriculture A to Z," which, despite its casual tone, underscores the importance of recognizing that groundbreaking technologies often have roots in collaborative efforts, including those originating from military projects. Towards the end of the episode, the focus turns to the subject of self-education and continuous learning. Kim shares her personal learning methods, which include spending time online, reading books, and hands-on experimentation with technology. She stresses that learning is a natural process that can be undertaken by anyone, regardless of their background or previous education. This episode with Kim Crawley is a masterclass in understanding the intricate world of hacker culture and cybersecurity. It challenges preconceived notions, offers fresh perspectives, and encourages a more nuanced understanding of technology's role in modern society. Whether you're a seasoned tech expert or a curious layperson, this conversation offers valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities that lie at the intersection of technology, culture, and ethics.
