Welcome to the Personal Development Trailblazers Podcast! In today's episode, we'll explore practical tips, strategies, and inspiring insights to shift your mindset and discover how your ADHD brain can become your superpowerSue was diagnosed in the very early days of ADHD diagnosis, way back in 1988. She mostly ignored her ADHD, dropped out of high school, struggled through college, a failed business, and weirdly found a successful career in nonprofit finance (seemingly one of the most boring and detailed jobs). Though she was good at it, it wasn't good for her and she reached critical burnout, adrenal fatigue and all.It became abundantly clear that it was time for a career change. You know what she did? She decided it was time to embrace her unique brain and go see an ADHD coach. While in the program she explored her brain, her passions, and what she wanted to do with her life. She rediscovered her early passion of working to empower individuals by helping them to find their inner strengths (Sue's first degree is in Outdoor Education for Social Change).Today Sue is embracing her ADHD and tapping into her strengths. She is a graduate of the ADD Coaching Academy (ADDCA) – the gold standard in ADHD coaching education- and is fostering understanding of all things ADHD and helping her clients stay centered and true to their marvelously weird and wonderful brains.Connect with Sue  Here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sue-day/https://www.instagram.com/pathwaysforwardcoaching/https://pathwaysforwardcoaching.com/Grab the freebie here: https://preview.mailerlite.io/preview/739658/sites/110083921398465621/rx9w0h===================================If you enjoyed this episode, remember to hit the like button and subscribe. * The conversation in this episode is focused on gender. We both acknowledge that gender identity exists on a spectrum but will be discussing gender specifically as the socialized binary of male and female.   This conversation explores the challenges and dynamics of gender roles and expectations in outdoor education. Dr. Steve Sassaman shares personal experiences and insights on how societal norms influence behavior in outdoor settings, the importance of role modeling, and the need for inclusivity in outdoor programs. The discussion highlights the shifting dynamics in participation and leadership roles, particularly among women, and emphasizes the importance of addressing privilege and identity in creating a more equitable outdoor experience. In this conversation, Phil and Steve explore the complexities of masculinity in outdoor education, the importance of redefining challenges to increase accessibility, and the need for intentional programming that prioritizes mental health and community building. They emphasize the value of critique and continuous learning in teaching, advocating for a humble approach that fosters trust and genuine connections with students.   Challenging gender roles is crucial in outdoor education. Personal experiences shape our understanding of gender dynamics. Intentionality in shaping outdoor experiences can challenge norms. Masculinity can be expressed positively without dominance. Role modeling is essential for fostering inclusivity. Privilege can be used to empower marginalized voices. Inclusivity in outdoor spaces benefits everyone. Gender diversity is increasing in outdoor programs. We must address safety concerns for all participants. Creating true inclusion requires ongoing dialogue and reflection. Ego and socialized norms around masculinity are pervasive in outdoor education. Redefining challenges can increase accessibility for all participants. Intentional programming should prioritize mental health and community building. Saying 'no' can be just as impactful as pushing through challenges. Critique is essential for growth and improvement in outdoor education. Building trust requires humility and a willingness to learn from students. The history of outdoor education often overlooks contributions from women and people of color. Creating space for critical thought enhances the learning experience. Outdoor educators should focus on human skills alongside technical skills. Continuous learning is vital for educators to remain effective and relatable. The Amazing Race event can be designed to include project adventure games and challenges that foster collaboration, strategy, and problem-solving. Long-term initiatives and planning are essential for making a lasting impact in team development. The industry needs to focus on being more legitimate and avoid taking on jobs that do not align with their mission and values. Pushing individuals to face their fears, such as heights, is not appropriate in the modern workplace and should be avoided. The industry has become more aware of inclusivity and the need to create experiences that cater to different personality styles and energy levels. In our latest episode of the Healthy Seas Podcast, we explored an innovative approach to education that's not just about learning—it's about living and interacting with the world around us. Our guest, Dr. Aristea Kyriakou, founder of the European Outdoor Education Hub, shares fascinating insights on how outdoor education can transform not only how students learn but also how they connect with their environment.Outdoor education is more than just taking lessons outside. It's a comprehensive methodology and philosophy that places students in natural settings, engaging them directly with their environment. Unlike traditional classroom-based instruction, which often relies on theoretical learning, outdoor education emphasizes experiential learning. This approach allows students to interact with their surroundings, engage multiple senses, and gain practical understanding through hands-on activities.Aristea's work with Healthy Seas in our Operation Ghost Farms exemplifies this methodology. By combining cleanups of abandoned fish farms with educational activities for kids, the program not only addresses immediate environmental issues but also fosters a deep, personal connection between students and their natural surroundings.Listen to the full episode to learn how outdoor education can revolutionize learning and inspire future environmental stewards. If you enjoyed this episode, please be sure to subscribe, rate and review it! Sandy Colhoun is the President of the National Outdoor Leadership School, also known as NOLS. - Founded in 1965 by legendary mountaineer Paul Petzolt, NOLS is widely considered to be the world's premier wilderness school, and its mission is “to be the leading source and teacher of wilderness skills and leadership that serve people and the environment.” NOLS operates in many of the world's wildest outdoor classrooms, and it provides the highest quality instruction in many outdoor skills, including wilderness travel, mountaineering, rock climbing, sea kayaking, and more. But perhaps most importantly, through these outdoor adventures, NOLS students learn the foundational and all-important life skills of leadership, teamwork, humility, and responsibility. - Sandy was named the seventh President of NOLS in October of 2023, after serving as the interim President and, before that, as a member of the NOLS Board of Trustees. Prior to his work with NOLS, he had spent much of his career in the worlds of education and journalism, most notably leading a $750 million fundraising campaign at Colby College in Maine. Sandy is also a proud graduate of a NOLS Wind River Mountaineering course, and he's no stranger to hardcore outdoor adventures– he worked as a ski patroller in Park City, climbed in Alaska, Nepal, and Bolivia, and cycled up and over the Himalayas from Tibet to Nepal. As you'll hear in our conversation, he's focused, driven, and lots of fun, and he's s fully committed to leading NOLS into the future. - I'm a proud graduate of a 1999 semester-long NOLS course, which was hands-down one of the most formative and valuable experiences of my entire life. Yes, I learned plenty of outdoor skills that have served me well for nearly 25 years now, but the most important lessons were those that taught me the value of good exhibition behavior, being comfortable in uncomfortable situations, and keeping a positive attitude when life gets difficult. If not for that semester, I highly doubt I would've ever moved out west, worked in conservation, or started this podcast. So, I'm obviously a superfan of all things NOLS. - I was so excited to chat with Sandy, and we covered a lot in our hour-long conversation. We discussed the history of NOLS, what separates NOLS from other wilderness schools, risk management, exhibition behavior, expanding one's comfort zone, a description of the ideal NOLS student, Sandy's own leadership style, his vision for the future of NOLS, how he will measure success, leaders that Sandy admires, favorite books, and much more. In this episode of the Pre-Accident Investigation Podcast, Todd Conklin presents a comprehensive discussion on the risks and consequences associated with outdoor recreational activities, especially school trips to the lake. The conversation emphasizes the crucial need for understanding risk management and implementing practical safety measures in group outdoor settings. Joining the discussion is Associate Professor Mike Brown from Auckland University, an expert with over three decades of experience in outdoor education. He highlights the fatal consequences of underestimating risks in outdoor activities and introduces listeners to his refined process of identifying and preventing accident patterns specific to outdoor education scenarios using real-life examples from coroner's case studies. The episode explores the thrilling allure of outdoor activities versus the imperative of safety, striking a balance between fun and responsible outdoor learning. It offers a profound understanding of the factors that can turn an exciting outdoor adventure into a tragic event, and discusses preventative strategies for future educational excursions. Diving deeper into practical examples, guest Mike Brown discusses a program involving water activities such as stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking, stressing the importance of adequate safety precautions, particularly when engaging with water. Delving into free-time vulnerabilities, complexities around supervision, and the dangers of unpreparedness and uninformed decision-making, the conversation alerts listeners to the critical importance of familiarity with water environment dynamics and adopting a 'fatality prevention mindset'. Concluding on a note of caution, the episode advises that while outdoor activities are mostly enjoyable and successful, the participants need to remain vigilant at all times to avert unfortunate incidents. This thought-provoking episode heightens understanding of the precarious balance between adventure and safety in outdoor education, prompting listeners to think critically about their own safety behaviours.

Knowing When to go for it with Mike Adolph

Delivering Adventure

How can we ever know when we should turn back or keep going? On paper, the safest decision to make is often to turn around or choose the route that takes on less risk. However, in reality, delivering adventure isn't always about picking the safest choice. At the core of every adventure is an element of risk taking. Being able to decide when to go for it, and when not to, is a defining trait of professional adventure guides and instructors.Helping us to identify when it's okay to keep going is Mike Adolph. Mike is an ACMG / IFMGA Mountain Guide and the current technical director of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. There are a number of factors that can hold us back from continuing onwards towards an objective including self doubt, fear, and uncertainty. We discuss some key strategies with Mike that we can use that can help us to determine if we should abort a plan or whether we are well positioned to keep going.Key Takeaways:How can we know when we should push forward and keep going with a plan when we may feel like doing the opposite? A few of the strategies that can help to guide our decision making include:Set goals around experiences: Instead of hard destinations or milestones, make it about the experience. When it comes to delivering adventure, we can box ourselves in by setting our expectations around achieving certain objectives.Identifying data points that support the decision to continue: This includes the amount of time taken to accomplish a task, competency level of skills, the interest level of group, the weather, the conditions, the amount of risk and the amount risk tolerance within the group.Remove pressure from the leader: Talk to the group for their feedback to ensure you are not the one driving the group or holding them back.If uncertainty is rising, ask yourself why: This uncertainty could include self doubt, the ability level of yourself or the group to handle the situation, the interest level of everyone involved, the conditions, and the actual route or path you want to take.Don't make a decision until you have to: This allows us the opportunity to collect as much information as possible before making a commitment. Guest BioMike Adolph is an ACMG / IFMGA Mountain Guide and the current technical director of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. In addition to guiding custom outdoor adventures for small groups, Mike also works as a guide trainer and examiner for the ACMG's Training and Assessment Program.Mike started in the outdoor industry in 1994 after his family, in a joint venture, opened the Sheiling Mountain Lodge and the Center for Outdoor Education in Nordegg, Alberta. He completed his final ACMG exam and received his IFMGA International Federation of Mountain Guides Association Mountain Guide designation in 2009. He always admired his instructors and examiners, even if they were a bit harsh at times, which lead to him getting involved with the instructor/examiner team in 2012. When the job posting for the interim ACMG technical director came up in 2018, he thought, why not? The mountains have taught him to be open to all possibilities, have several options and go with the flow. I feel lucky to have this as a career and am extremely grateful to my loving and understanding wife Jennifer and our two boys Lucas and Tyler.Guest LinksACMG Technical Manuals: https://www.acmg.ca/03public/resources/publications.aspxAssociation of Mountain Guides: www.acmg.caDavid Thomson Via Ferratas: www.viaferratacanada.comMike Adolph Email:

Have you ever pushed forward with something even when it became clear that you should probably change your plan or abort? If so, you may have succumbed to plan continuation bias. When this happens, we can become predisposed to continue towards completing our original plan, even when conditions change, or new information becomes known that indicates that continuing on is not advisable.Mike Adolph joins us to discuss some of the strategies that we can use to recognize and manage plan continuation bias. Mike Adolph is an ACMG / IFMGA Mountain Guide and is the current Technical Director of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.Mike dips into his extensive guiding and instructing experience to share some great examples and advice.Key TakeawaysWhat is plan continuation bias: It is when a person ignores the fact that conditions or the situation has changed in a way that should cause them to rethink their initial plan, but the person decides to push on towards their objective anyway.Reasons for plan continuation bias: There are often a number of human factors at play including pressure to keep going from others, a need or desire to make money if you are getting paid to keep going, and a belief that we are more likely to experience a positive outcome. We may also end up ignoring or downplaying information that indicates that we should change course.Set key decisions points beforehand: For example, we will decide if we continue once we reach the ridge, or after lunch, or once we have worked on this skill.Removing pressures beforehand: Examples of this can include communicating expectations, decision points and the overall plan beforehand.Guest BioMike Adolph is an ACMG / IFMGA Mountain Guide and the current technical director of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides.
