What happens when kids trade screens for wetlands, woods, and real conservation experiences? The future of hunting, fishing, and conservation depends on something bigger than habitat alone. It depends on people. This conversation dives into how youth outdoor education programs are reshaping the next generation of conservation-minded citizens through hands-on experiences in the woods and on the water. From waterfowl hunting heritage to immersive conservation camps, the focus is on introducing kids to the outdoors at the right age and in the right way. Listeners will hear how structured programs like multi-day camps, school partnerships, and mentored hunts are creating lifelong connections to wildlife, habitat, and the North American model of wildlife conservation. The discussion explores why fourth grade may be the critical window for engagement, how outdoor learning improves mental health and cognitive development, and why conservation literacy is the missing link in today's policy battles. There's also a deeper look at scaling these efforts nationwide. With existing infrastructure like 4-H camps, shooting sports programs, and local hunting clubs, the opportunity to expand hunting education, fishing skills, and outdoor stewardship is closer than most realize. For those concerned about the decline in hunter participation, shifting wildlife management funding, or the future of public lands, this conversation offers a clear path forward rooted in education and access. In this powerful episode of Acta Non Verba, Marcus sits down with John Howell, Super Bowl champion and North Creek Ranch innovator. John shares his incredible journey from small-town Nebraska eight-man football to the NFL, revealing the struggles, setbacks, and mental health challenges that shaped him into the man and leader he is today. From walking onto Colorado State as an unknown to winning a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay, John's story is a masterclass in perseverance, faith, and the power of doing hard things. Now, John is building something even more impactful at North Creek Ranch—a six-generation family cattle ranch transformed into a retreat destination where men can reconnect with themselves, nature, and each other through hunting, leadership training, and authentic fellowship. Episode Highlights [22:48] The Freshman Who Almost Quit - John reveals how he nearly gave up during his freshman year at Colorado State, flunking every class except aerobics and planning to quit football entirely. A Christmas break drive past his high school reminded him of his dreams and the people who believed in him, leading to a pivotal decision to return with renewed determination. [22:49] The Practice That Changed Everything - After arriving at Colorado State as a walk-on, John thought the team wasn't very good—until the fourth practice when the entire varsity squad showed up. This humbling moment taught him the difference between going 100% and understanding practice etiquette, eventually leading to mentorship from All-American Anthony Cesario. [56:17] The Anxiety Attack Before Super Bowl Season - John courageously shares his breakdown the night before training camp in his second NFL season—calling Coach Jon Gruden to say he had to leave. Instead of cutting him, Gruden responded with love and support, saying "I don't know what you have going on, but I want you to know I love you and I'm here for you." John went on to win the Super Bowl that season. [46:38] The Power of Not Quitting When It's Hardest - John's advice to young athletes and men: "Do not quit your freshman year." He explains the difference between stopping something and quitting something, emphasizing that we can live with failure, but regret from quitting when things are hardest will haunt us forever. John Howell is a Super Bowl XXXVII champion who played defensive back for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under legendary coaches Tony Dungy and Jon Gruden. After an improbable journey from eight-man high school football in rural Nebraska to walking on at Colorado State University and eventually being drafted in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, John spent five seasons in professional football. Today, John is the visionary behind North Creek Ranch, a six-generation family cattle ranch in Nebraska that he's transformed into a world-class retreat destination and hunting lodge. Through North Creek Ranch and his nonprofit Herd Bull University, John creates transformative experiences for men, teaching them to embrace challenge, build confidence, and live with purpose through hunting, outdoor skills, and leadership development. John is a man of deep faith, a devoted husband and father, and a passionate advocate for mental health awareness in athletics and business leadership. In this conversation, Phil and Lisa explore the complexities of defining what makes a group great in a facilitation context. They discuss the role of the facilitator's ego, the subjective nature of group dynamics, and the importance of evaluating success beyond personal feelings. The dialogue emphasizes the need for facilitators to balance their own experiences with the goals of the group, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of participant engagement and learning outcomes. A great group often means the facilitator felt liked. Facilitators' egos can influence their perception of group success. Group dynamics are subjective and can vary by facilitator. Struggle in a group can lead to greater learning experiences. It's important to evaluate groups based on goals, not just feelings. Facilitators should embrace their humanity in the process. The definition of a great group can differ among facilitators. Patience and support within a group enhance the experience. Fun and challenge can coexist in group settings. Questions about group success should be more nuanced. Towards the end of August, secondary school outdoor education teachers were told that the course would be removed from the Education Ministry's general subject list as part of the government's proposed replacement of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). As a result of being excluded from the list of general subjects, outdoor education, which provides direct training and pathways for students looking to enter conservation, environmental science and outdoor tourism careers, would be included in the list of vocational subjects, meaning that the course curriculum would be designed by the Industry Skills Boards instead of the Ministry of Education, stripping schools of the flexibility in designing the curriculum and removing pathways to higher education for students. For this week's Get Action! Wednesday Wire host Oto spoke with Fiona McDonald from Education Outdoors New Zealand to discuss a petition of hers calling on the ministry of education to keep outdoor education in the list of secondary school general subjects. They explore the core impacts of outdoor education, including confidence building and connection with nature, while also addressing the need to shift perspectives on risk and challenge. The discussion culminates in a vision for the future of outdoor education that emphasizes reducing barriers and enhancing learning experiences through outdoor spaces.   Outdoor education should be accessible to all, not just the adventurous few. Experiential learning is key to achieving educational outcomes. Confidence, connection, and skill development are core impacts of outdoor education. The focus should be on creating meaningful experiences, not just flashy adventures. Leadership development is best achieved in low-risk environments. Facilitators should allow discomfort to foster learning opportunities. The situational leadership model can enhance group dynamics. Outdoor education can be integrated into everyday learning environments. The future of outdoor education lies in reducing barriers and enhancing accessibility. Sue Day was diagnosed in the very early days of ADHD diagnosis, way back in 1988. She mostly ignored her ADHD, dropped out of high school, struggled through college, a failed business, and weirdly found a successful career in nonprofit finance (seemingly one of the most boring and detailed jobs). Though she was good at it, it wasn't good for her and she reached critical burnout, adrenal fatigue and all. It became abundantly clear that it was time for a career change. She decided it was time to embrace her unique brain and go see an ADHD coach. While in the program she explored her brain, her passions, and what she wanted to do with her life. She rediscovered her early passion of working to empower individuals by helping them to find their inner strengths (Sue's first degree is in Outdoor Education for Social Change). Today Sue is embracing her ADHD and tapping into her strengths. She is a graduate of the ADD Coaching Academy (ADDCA) – the gold standard in ADHD coaching education- and is fostering understanding of all things ADHD and helping her clients stay centered and true to their marvelously weird and wonderful brains.

The discussion highlights the shifting dynamics in participation and leadership roles, particularly among women, and emphasizes the importance of addressing privilege and identity in creating a more equitable outdoor experience. In this conversation, Phil and Steve explore the complexities of masculinity in outdoor education, the importance of redefining challenges to increase accessibility, and the need for intentional programming that prioritizes mental health and community building. They emphasize the value of critique and continuous learning in teaching, advocating for a humble approach that fosters trust and genuine connections with students.   Challenging gender roles is crucial in outdoor education. Personal experiences shape our understanding of gender dynamics. Intentionality in shaping outdoor experiences can challenge norms. Masculinity can be expressed positively without dominance. Role modeling is essential for fostering inclusivity. Privilege can be used to empower marginalized voices. Inclusivity in outdoor spaces benefits everyone. Gender diversity is increasing in outdoor programs. We must address safety concerns for all participants. Creating true inclusion requires ongoing dialogue and reflection. Ego and socialized norms around masculinity are pervasive in outdoor education. Redefining challenges can increase accessibility for all participants. Intentional programming should prioritize mental health and community building. Saying 'no' can be just as impactful as pushing through challenges. Critique is essential for growth and improvement in outdoor education. Building trust requires humility and a willingness to learn from students. The history of outdoor education often overlooks contributions from women and people of color. Creating space for critical thought enhances the learning experience. Outdoor educators should focus on human skills alongside technical skills. Continuous learning is vital for educators to remain effective and relatable.
