In this interview, Laura Boyle shares her personal journey into polyamory, which began at age 19, and how she later became a relationship coach and educator on the topic. The conversation delves into the practical aspects of polyamorous relationships, including managing finances, child-rearing, and cohabitation—the subject of Boyle's latest book. Boyle highlights key findings from her research, such as the prevalence of three-adult households in polyamory and the challenges of navigating custody battles with non-polyamorous ex-partners. The discussion also explores the growing interest in non-monogamy, the stigma surrounding polyamory, and Boyle's philosophy as a relationship anarchist. "In the last couple of weeks, you have repeatedly reiterated your stance that you don't believe in a soul or any other sort of divine essence that could be "dug out" or set free and give people the ability to change. Yet empirical evidence shows that you spend an enormous amount of time talking to people attempting to do just that — showing them the parts of themselves that have been hurt and giving them the tools to protect and nurture those parts in order to heal and improve their lives. You have also repeatedly used phrases such as "selling your soul to the devil", "soul murder", etc."Isn't that evidence that you actually DO believe in a soul (even if perhaps it is not immortal and can be damaged beyond repair or somehow sold for material profit) or some similar construct? Because otherwise, it would seem to imply that all of your work is merely entertainment...""Hi Stefan, thanks for the forum and time you give to the community, you've helped tremendously over the years. I'll do my best to support more of your good works when I'm financially better able. Onwards, my question is what constitutes a genuine or acceptable apology from a parent to a child regarding verbal and physical abuse sustained during the childhood? for example hypothetically would a simple “I'm sorry” cover it? if genuine or would you see it necessary for a more detailed and context based apology? If this has been asked and answered before, feel free to skip if so, and thanks again!""Hi Stef, I've been thinking recently about the idea of living a life guided by rational and moral principles at which point the question emerges. What does it mean to be rational? I think you have done some great work on elaborating on what it means to be moral, but I still find myself unsure about rationality (perhaps due to my lack of research)."As such here is my question. Is it rational for parents to hit their children? If rationality is seen as behaving in such a way that you make a perceived outcome more likely, are parents acting rationally in this case? If what they want is their children's obedience, or to socialise their children to be able to fit into the world as it is, is it irrational for them to hit their children?"Join the PREMIUM philosophy community on the web for free!NOW AVAILABLE FOR SUBSCRIBERS: MY NEW BOOK 'PEACEFUL PARENTING' - AND THE INTERACTIVE PEACEFUL PARENTING AI AND AUDIOBOOK!Also get the Truth About the French Revolution, the interactive multi-lingual philosophy AI trained on thousands of hours of my material, private livestreams, premium call in shows, the 22 Part History of Philosophers series and much more!See you soon!https://freedomain.locals.com/support/promo/UPB2022

Money, parenting, sharing space, schedules, rental agreements… these may not be the sexiest and most exciting aspects of non-monogamy, but they are important. In fact, they're common stumbling blocks, and can cause big relationship issues when left unaddressed for long periods of time. Here's the problem: we rarely get to hear about how other polyamorous people are handling the practical details of their lives. That's exactly what our guest today, author and coach Laura Boyle, is out to solve. Her new book, Monogamy? In this Economy? Finances, Childrearing, and Other Practical Concerns of Polyamory, is based on a survey of nearly 500 polyamorous households and is chock full of the real-life experiences of families with more than two adults. In this episode, we're talking about: — The most common size of polyamorous households (hint: it's not what you might expect!) — Creative solutions for managing space constraints in shared living situations — The importance of open communication about seemingly minor issues before they become major problems — How to navigate the complexities of blending families and introducing new partners to children — Practical considerations around finances, particularly regarding vacations and large gifts for non-nesting partners — The parallels between polyamorous family dynamics and other "non-traditional" family structures like blended families — Why it's crucial to discuss reproductive health and pregnancy scenarios early in relationships — Our own experiences with solving these issues — How relationship anarchy principles can benefit both monogamous and non-monogamous relationships — Addressing jealousy in multi-adult households without overemphasizing or ignoring it Resources mentioned in this episode: — Laura Boyle's new book: Monogamy in This Economy: Finances, Child Rearing, and Other Practical Concerns of Polyamory — Pre-order Laura's book — Laura's website: ReadyForPolyamory.com — Follow Laura on Instagram and TikTok: @ReadyforPolyamory JOIN The Year of Opening community for a full year of learning & support. More adults are now relying on their parents for financial support, career advice and emotional regulation well into their 30s — challenging the notion that a parent is only responsible for their child until age 18. One poll found that about 45% of adults under 30 are living with their parents — “the most common living arrangement for that age group for the first time since just after the Great Depression,” writes Atlantic staff writer Faith Hill. In the past this may have been considered a “failure to launch,” but as families reckon with changing economic realities and delayed maturity milestones, they report benefits from their increased closeness compared with prior generations.” Is your relationship with your adult child, or children, different from the one you had with your parents? Instead of seeking a simplistic partner, men aim to find someone who can effectively nurture and raise their offspring. #267 The Challenges (& Lasting Impact) of the Baby/Child-Rearing Phases on Your Marriage & Parent/Child Relationships

If you're NOT a new parent, you still want to listen to this episode -- because it may help you to understand WHY you have the current relationship you do with your children and/or your spouse because of things that happened or did NOT happen during the baby and child-rearing phases! But this episode came in response to this question which we received: "My husband and I have been married for a little over two years and we are expecting our first baby in the Fall. We've both listened to and loved your podcast even before we were married. Now that we are about to become parents, we are relistening to your podcasts since they've taken on a decidedly new meaning and depth. Understandably, your podcasts talk a lot about older children, teenagers, and your adult children launching into successful lives. What I (wife) was wondering is if you could answer some questions about what it was like to become parents for the first time. I've listened to prominent speakers like Jordan Peterson talk about how wives are essentially "gone" from their husbands for up to six months after the birth of a baby due to the intense vulnerability and helplessness of the new infant as well as the healing mom needs to go through after giving birth. And, while the husband acts as protector of the mother's energy and sanity during these first crucial months, he will just have to be patient as he "waits for his wife to come back to him."First off, what does "gone from him" even mean? How did Rachel overcome the need to be the on-demand mom for so long without neglecting Greg? If she struggled, what did you do about it? My husband says he is not terribly worried about it and has told me to just take the birth and first few months as it comes — that I have his full permission to be there for the baby. However, the worried side of me won't seem to shut off because I don't want to be just the mother of his children, I want to be his wife first and foremost. Maybe six months doesn't sound like a long time to veterans, but it certainly sounds like a long time to essentially "clock out" of wifey duties.  In this episode, Greg and Rachel, parents of 7 children, discuss the challenges and dynamics of becoming new parents, particularly as it relates to intimacy between spouses. They emphasize the importance of understanding the physical and emotional changes that occur during pregnancy and the postpartum period. They also highlight the significance of this time meeting the needs of babies for their mental, emotional, and psychological development. Greg and Rachel stress the importance of support and communication between partners during this time and offer insights on creating a balance between parenting and maintaining a strong marital relationship. The conversation explores the challenges and strategies for maintaining intimacy and connection in a marriage after having a baby. They emphasizes the importance of intentional self-care for the wife and leveling up for the husband. The couple discusses the need for physical and emotional healing after childbirth and the gradual process of getting back into a sexual relationship. They highlight the importance of communication, routines, and meeting each other's needs. The conversation also touches on the impact of parenthood on personal growth and the significance of sex in a committed relationship.
