Okay, yesterday I shared a lot of news that’s happened this week in the hobby. I’ve re-added it here just in case.In this episode though, I go overMy opinions on the whole Fanatics thingWhat it means for Topps/PaniniWhat it means for creators and hobby business ownersThe main middle men that’ll cop most of the heatA little on the PWCC thingBut most importantly, my hobby news this week - because in a week where PWCC was kicked off eBay, you all want to hear about me bidding for Christian Vieri cards. A lot of this is my opinion - in fact, that’s all pretty much any of us have at the moment. I don’t think I’ll talk too much more about any of this as it’s just speculation. If more news comes out, I’ll discuss that when it’s relevant. However, I didn want to talk about how it relates to soccer cards. It’ll be a very interesting topic going forward.Fanatics Buys the HobbyPWCC took headlines for like 48 hours or so…Until Fanatics just came in and flopped their dick on the table and showed who is boss.*Chaos ensures**again*This was more out of left field - friend of the show, Darren Rovell, broke the news at the Action Network. The Action Network: MLB Set to Give Exclusive Trading Card License to Fanatics, Ending 70-Year Run for ToppsSports Card Daily: Reports: Fanatics in Deals to Take Over Trading Card Licenses in Multiple SportsThis news kinda broke in parts.First the Topps baseball part came out and that was huge.Baseball Collector (Mike from Breaker Culture):Then, a few hours later, the it came out Fanatics are also in conversations with NBA and NFL about their rights too.Massive.This is still five years away though, and as it seemed to come out of left field, there’s still a lot of time for this to play out.I have my views on this, but as far as sharing them - I’ll wait until there’s a bit more solid news and less doomsday prepping.Topps Having a 200m Loan Due Next Year?!Most of what you see is just unfounded talk and opintion.Again…Again, if you want to help out, there’s a few ways you can support the newsletter.Shop at eBay (affiliate link, I’ll earn a small percentage off any purchase - at no extra cost to you)Submit Your Card to Goldin AuctionsTry SoRareCheck out Market Movers Subscribe at soccercardsrock.substack.com

I wasn’t going to record this week - but I had an hour or so free - so here we are. It’s a great opportunity to do an episode type I’ve wanted to do for a while but never really felt was the right time. Oh well.Today I start to look at underappeciated sets of decades past. We start with Panini Calcio 96 (affilaite link). The set comes from a time when Serie A was king - and was where some of the greatest players on the planet called home. I chat a little about the set, the leage at the time, and open a pack from the set and discuss the players who featured. You can Find Panini Calcio 96 Cards on eBayLet me know what you think about this type of episode - it might be something I do more of. Along with that, I go into some hobby news:PSA and Goldin meeting upCSG investments and what it means for usI also look into a weird old mailday. Bryan and the lads from Sunday League Investors are all insanely cool guys - since day dot with the newsletter, they’ve been super supportive of everything I’ve done - and gave my first podcast appearance back in the day. Since then, they’ve been some of my better friends in the hobby - and working with them is always a dream. Bryan and I chat cards in this rundown. It’s not often you get the chance to interview one of your favorite soccer people. This episode I got that chance. And I’m thrilled about it. I’ve had a lot of people that are somewhat interested in Australian soccer in some way or another. Not to mention all the awesome Aussie listeners and readers I have.Anyway, I wanted to have an episode that’s less hobby-central, but a bit of a dive into Aussie soccer. There was only one person I wanted to talk to… Simon Hill. So, I went and got the voice of Australian soccer to chat the sport with. A really fun episode today. Damian Olivera, who owns the biggest collection of Messi cards - shares stories from his collecting, including a run-in with Ronaldinho. Then, you can hear two men in their 30s gush about the first five years of Lionel Messi’s career. You might recognize Damian from this image….But there’s much more to his story than just one picture. He’s an awesome guy, and I had a lot of fun with this chat. There’s definitely scope for a part two.You can follow Damian on Instagram here.If you want Lionel Messi cards, you can find them on eBay (affiliaite link) here.Become a Friend of the PodSubscribe if you haven’t.Share this with a friend.Give me a rating on your podcast app of choice.Looking For Other Ways to Support the Pod?I don’t want to charge you for listening to podcasts or reading newsletters (not that I'm against anyone that does - it just isn’t my thing). However, having said that, there’s a few ways you can help out.For starters, if you’re looking at eBay to make any purchases, please click here to do so (or copy https://ebay.us/3ZeaOV into your browser). I chat with Darren Rovell about the hobby, tickets, his background in the hobby and making it as a sports journalist. It’s funny that Rovell chatted about creating a list of tickets that he wanted in his collection, and slowly started chipping away at that - I think that’s an awesome strategy and one that I definitely recommend. In fact, it’s kinda what I did with ideal podcast guests for this show, and Rovell was definitely on my list - so this was a real thrill. Buy tickets on eBay (affiliate link). Really excited to have Brendan from QCB Soccer Cards on the pod today. Brendan was one of the very first blokes to reach out and start chatting when this pod started, so it was a thrill of mine to get him on the pod.You might remember Brendan from his work on the Fantasy Soccer Card Folio. In this episode, we chat about Brendan’s career in the hobby, and then pivot to chatting about American soccer prospects - and the MLS in general. Honestly, I am really intrigued by the MLS. It’s a different system than what I’m used to, and there are a few parallels to soccer in Australia (how to run a league where soccer isn’t the top sport in the country). And, more importantly, I’m keen to lean more about how the MLS are going in developing so much top talent. Now, you’re seeing guys go from the MLS straight to European starting squads. Some of those MLS sets from a few seasons ago are brilliant too - SO MANY PROSPECTS. You can find MLS cards on eBay using this affiliate link (I’ll earn a small commission from purchases - it’s no extra cost to you and helps keep this free). A huge thanks to Brendan - You can see Brendan on Instagram here. https://www.instagram.com/qcbsoccercards/Your Next StepsHonestly, if you’re reading this - can you please leave a rating and review on your podcast app of choice. Really pumped to share this episode with you today. We had Alex Stewart from the TIFO YouTube and Podcast. Personally, I’ve been a huge fan of TIFO for many years, and I think you can definitely see their work as an influence in what I try to do. Alex and I have a great chat about a range of topics:How TIFO started, and his background in creating videos/podcasts.A massive deep-dive on scouting. We go over the process that Alex uses when creating the ‘sensible transfers’ video series. This process will 100% translate into prospecting for cards. How to watch soccer on TV. It sound dumb, but there’s actually a bit of a science to watching a soccer match on TV if you’re looking at watching a player (or a team), then this is really valuable info. Alex is a great dude, and a wealth of knowledge about the sport. While we don’t specifically mention cards here, there’s plenty of ideas that you can translate directly into the hobby. In fact, that’s why I love having guests like Alex on the show - you can pick up skills and strategies from other areas that you can use in the hobby. To check out the TIFO YouTube Channel, it’s one of the best out there.
