A World Cup semi-final that gave England everything… except the ending they wanted. It's 1990, and after 24 years of hurt, England are back in the last four of a World Cup. Italia '90 has captured the imagination of a nation, and standing between Bobby Robson's side and a place in the final are the opponents they always seem to meet when the stakes are highest: West Germany. In this episode, we revisit England vs West Germany, a semi-final filled with drama, tension and some of the most iconic images in English football history. We break down how England recovered from a shaky start to the tournament, how Bobby Robson built a side around resilience and togetherness, and how players like Paul Gascoigne, Gary Lineker and Peter Shilton carried the hopes of a country that was beginning to believe. We relive Andreas Brehme's deflected free-kick, Lineker's cool equaliser, and a gripping extra-time battle where both sides came agonisingly close to winning it. We also explore the moment that defined the night for many England fans — Gazza's yellow card, the tears that followed, and a young midfielder suddenly becoming the emotional heartbeat of a nation. And then comes the penalty shootout. England's first at a World Cup. Stuart Pearce. Chris Waddle. Millions watching through their fingers. Was this England's finest World Cup performance since 1966? Did they actually outplay the Germans? And why, more than three decades later, does this defeat still occupy such a special place in the memories of England supporters? This is The Semi-Final Countdown — a podcast dedicated to the great finals (and the occasional semi-final) from the annals of football. Each week your hosts, Adam and Lewis, dive deep — with a generous helping of nostalgia and humour — into one of football's greatest showpieces.
Max Rushden and Charlie Baker step into the hot seats bringing you a packed podcast of football chat. They are joined by England legend Gary Lineker to dive deep into all things World Cup. Gary gives his definitive predictions on exactly where the Three Lions will finish, who he expects to lift the trophy as tournament favorites, and reflects honestly on the ethical issues that have surrounded past World Cups. Plus, as a man who knows a thing or two about elite goal-scoring, Gary explains why he believes Harry Kane is currently the absolute best number 9 in world football, and shares his candid thoughts on the prospect of Kane shattering his own historic England World Cup scoring record.Follow us on socials:X/Twitter: @tSHandJInstagram: @tSHandJYouTube: talkSPORT Hosted on Acast. How Great Were England 1986? Bobby Robson, Maradona and the World Cup That Became MythWas England's 1986 World Cup campaign a glorious failure, a missed opportunity, or simply the moment Bobby Robson's side ran into Diego Maradona at the peak of his powers? In this traditional end-of-season England special of By Far The Greatest Team, Graham and Jamie are joined by Steve Double to place Bobby Robson's England 1986 under the ranking microscope. From the chaos of Mexico's heat and altitude to England's stuttering start, Bryan Robson's injury, Ray Wilkins' red card, Gary Lineker's Golden Boot surge, and the tactical reshuffle that accidentally brought Peter Beardsley, Peter Reid and Steve Hodge into sharper focus, this is a deep dive into one of England's most fascinating World Cup campaigns. And then, of course, there is Argentina. The quarter-final at the Azteca gave football two of its most famous goals: The Hand of God and The Goal of the Century. One England could never forgive. One England could never deny. We revisit the build-up, the Falklands shadow, Maradona's genius, Peter Shilton's protest, Terry Butcher and Terry Fenwick's pursuit, and the late arrival of John Barnes — whose cameo almost changed the entire story. We also explore the afterlife of the match, including Steve Hodge's swap with Maradona and the famous shirt that decades later sold for a world-record fee.Key TakeawaysHow Bobby Robson was viewed before Mexico 86Why England's original shape struggledHow injuries and suspension forced a better tactical balanceGary Lineker's rise from pressure to Golden Boot winnerWhy England vs Argentina became more than just a quarter-finalThe two Maradona goals: controversy, genius and football immortalityJohn Barnes' late impact and the great “what if?”Steve Hodge, Maradona's shirt and the mythology of football objectsWhere England 1986 belongs in the Greatness RankingsKeywords: 1986 World Cup, England football, Bobby Robson, Diego Maradona, Hand of God, Goal of the Century, England vs Argentina, Gary Lineker, Steve Hodge, John Barnes, Ray Wilkins, Bryan Robson, football history, World Cup analysis, By Far The Greatest TeamIf you enjoy these podcasts, please don't forget to subscribe and give us a rating and also tell everyone about them!

Cristiano Ronaldo has been lighting up the Saudi Pro League and stirring the pot off the field in the past few days. Five days ago, the Al Nassr superstar scored a clinical goal against Al Akhdoud, as shown in Fox Sports highlights, keeping his teams title push alive amid fierce competition. Just yesterday, he nearly pulled off a stunning solo run for a beauty of a goal, according to fan footage from AlfonsoR10 on YouTube, showcasing that trademark flair at 41. On the business front, YouTube reports from sports channels highlight his ongoing rivalry with Lionel Messi shifting to club ownership, with Ronaldo deeply invested in UD Almeria while Messi snapped up UE Cornella, fueling endless debates on whose business savvy reigns supreme. Social media buzzed when England icon Gary Lineker revealed on The Rest Is Football Podcast that Ronaldo unfollowed him on Instagram, blaming it on his honest take that Messi is the greatest ever, Lineker quipping hell get over it. Sky News touched on Saudi Arabias sportswashing era possibly winding down, name-dropping Ronaldo as a key figure in the kingdoms investments alongside the troubled LIV Golf and Newcastle United ownership. No major public appearances or verified new headlines in the last 24 hours, but these moments underscore Ronaldos enduring impact on and off the pitch, from goal-scoring heroics to savvy ventures that could define his post-playing legacy. Gary Lineker needs no introduction. Golden Boot winner at the 1986 World Cup. Sixty-eight goals for England and one of only four players in history never to receive a yellow card. And for thirty years, the most recognisable face in British football broadcasting. And through almost all of it, a quiet persistent voice telling him he didn't quite belong — that sooner or later, someone was going to find him out. What's fascinating about this conversation is how honest Gary is about that feeling, and how completely he refuses to pretend it wasn't there. He talks about the terrifying manager who pinned him against a dressing room wall after he'd scored two goals in a half, and the life lesson that was buried somewhere inside that moment. He opens up about what it was really like at Barcelona — playing at the absolute peak of his powers and still running back to the halfway line thinking he'd just got lucky again. He tells the story of his dad, who said "I love you" for the first and only time as he lay dying, and what that did to Gary standing alone in a hospital lift. And he shares the lesson from Des Lynam that quietly shaped the way he approached thirty years of live television. You'll hear Gary talk on why luck matters more than most people admit. On what it means to go two marriages deep and still consider yourself blessed. On kindness as a non-negotiable. And on why his greatest asset was never his right foot... it was his mind. Welcome back to It Was What It Was, the football history podcast. Co-hosts Jonathan Wilson and Rob Draper continue on from last week's episode with Jan Fjortoft to delve into how things went wrong for Graham Taylor during his time as England manager. In this first part of a three part series on Graham Taylor (following our episode with Fjortoft) we take a look at the high of Italia '90 to the early warning signs of Graham Taylor's troubled England reign, setting up the wider story of his eventual downfall. Central to the episode is Paul Gascoigne's rise into “Gaza mania,” the off-field chaos and disciplinary problems that followed, including the 1991 FA Cup final knee rupture and subsequent setbacks. Taylor struggled to manage both the player and the circus around him. England qualified for Euro 1992 but drew twice, lost to Sweden and Taylor's substitution of Gary Lineker became emblematic as tabloid ridicule culminate in a reputational collapse for Taylor.01:05 The Impossible Job Era07:39 Referees And Rotterdam12:47 Italia 90 Reality Check20:02 Gaza Mania Begins25:31 Euro Qualifiers Begin28:24 Ireland Away Selection30:08 Taylor Press Tightrope35:48 Cup Final Knee Rupture41:46 Euro 92 Sweden Turning Point42:55 Lineker Sub Controversy47:50 Fitness Gap And Refuelling49:32 Turnip Taylor Tabloid Sting Hosted on Acast. Could there really be a world where Jude Bellingham doesn't start for England at the World Cup this summer? With Thomas Tuchel favouring Morgan Rogers in the number 10 role so far, is Bellingham facing a place on the bench? There are also big questions up front. Who steps in as backup to Harry Kane? Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke were both given opportunities against Uruguay but failed to impress, while Ollie Watkins hasn't quite hit top form this season. Does this point to a wider decline in traditional number nines in the English game? Plus, Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards pick their World Cup favourites and assess where England really stand among the contenders. The Rest Is Football is powered by Fuse Energy. Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is historian Tom Williamson, who thinks that the heat is on and the time is right for remembering Going For Gold, Duel by Propaganda, Constructor, the Mr Blobby VHS and The Adam And Joe Show. This week Omid Djalili, Jon Holmes and Colin Shindler discuss the sort of player who should have played for their country but never did, players who lacked the ebullience to stand out from their more aggressive and extrovert team mates and players - wherever they operated in the football pyramid. Players who were the unshowy but reliable… who got the ball, made ground and passed accurately to a colleague in space. On a fictional level the list would start with Blackie Gray who did all the donkey work for Melchester Rovers and provided what we now call the assist for Roy Race, who scored all the goals and was credited with the fancy title of Roy of the Rovers. Today's edition is all about the Blackie Grays of this world. To be fair to Gary Lineker he always credited Peter Beardsley as the creator of many of his goals for England. Bottom of League One side Port Vale stunned Sunderland to prove the magic of the FA Cup is still alive. It's Port Vale's first trip to the quarter-finals since 1954, and goalscorer Ben Waine, a lifelong Newcastle fan even pulled out Alan Shearer's iconic celebration. Elsewhere, Mansfield pushed Arsenal all the way at Field Mill. Sixteen year old wonderkid Max Dowman caught the eye with a brilliant performance, could there be a scenario where he makes the England squad this summer? Plus, Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards discuss Arsenal becoming the first Premier League club to reach 100 goals in all competitions this season, and ask whether some of the criticism surrounding the team is actually unfair. Gary Lineker took questions from the live Full Disclosure audience and nothing was off the table. He discusses the scrutiny that follows every World Cup, including the tournament in the United States, and considers whether sports broadcasters should speak out more in politically volatile times. He also reflects on his own social media controversies, football's growing tribalism, and whether today's game might have suited him better than the heavy pitches and harder tackles of his playing days.Candid, thoughtful and often wry, this is the unfiltered extra from a memorable live show.
Gary Lineker has scored in World Cups, fronted the nation's biggest football programme, and weathered a political firestorm that nearly ended it all. But at the height of his success, turning to a teammate after scoring four for England, his reaction was disbelief: “Why am I so f**ing lucky?”In this live edition of Full Disclosure, James O'Brien charts the full arc of Lineker's extraordinary career. From a market trader's son in Leicester to Golden Boot winner and the face of Match of the Day, Gary reflects on self doubt, ambition, and the surreal reality of becoming a national institution. He opens up about the brutal culture of tabloid scrutiny, the shock of discovering he had been followed by investigators, and the emotional weekend when the BBC stood him down- only for colleagues to walk out in solidarity. He explains why he refused to apologise when he believed he was right, the mistake that ultimately cost him his role, and why speaking out became unavoidable.Funny, disarmingly honest, and unexpectedly vulnerable, this is Gary Lineker as you have never quite heard him before- on luck, loyalty, outrage, and starting again. This episode was recorded at The Royal Geographical Society to raise money for charity Make Some Noise. It was a good day for Newcastle as they beat Villa in the 4th Round of the FA Cup, but the headlines were stolen by a staggering display from the officials at Villa Park. With no VAR in operation, the big question is unavoidable: have referees become too reliant on technology? Is VAR the worst thing ever introduced to the game? There was magic in the cup as Mansfield Town stunned Burnley to reach the Fifth Round of the FA Cup for the first time since 1975. The guys question Scott Parker's decision to make nine changes for the Clarets. Plus, Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards debate whether Dominik Szoboszlai truly deserves the “world class” tag. And the big question… Gary, Alan or Harry Kane? Happy New Year to you. This time last year I did something I'd never done before, which was to publish my New Year's resolutions.I was nervous about doing it because, despite constantly putting stuff out on the internet, I'm actually quite private about some things, and it made me feel quite vulnerable publishing them. However, publicly stating goals pushes you to achieve them. You're making yourself accountable, so you're more likely to deliver. It also clarifies what you're actually looking for, and solidifies goals beyond abstract ideas. It can also prompt those reading them to help in some way, whether through advice, introductions or collaboration.I'm glad I did it, and I'm sure it helped me achieve a lot of those goals. Here they are, in case of interest:The health, body and mind stuff I pretty much succeeded at - I stayed fit, I drank even less (to the point of barely drinking at all), my fasting fell by the wayside and so my weight has crept up a little. I hit my reading target - just - though really I should read a lot more.Money was also a goal hit with gold, silver and most Flying Frisby tips all performing well (though let's be honest last year was a bonanza year for pretty much everyone except bitcoin maximalists). On the love and family side of things, I think I did ok - you'll have to ask my kids and mother if I have been a good father/son. My other big target of settling down with a certain Miss Downing was an abject failure, which is probably for the best all things considered, and I am grateful to my Guardian Angel for stepping in there. On the work and career front I should consider the year a success. The live shows were brilliant, sold out, we have a lot of dates in for the spring. The book has also done well. It's coming out in the US next year.Above all I have got Kisses on a Postcard moving forward, which was the most important target of the year. The two big failures were that I didn't finish two writing projects I had in mind - my Gilbert and Sullivan and Peasants Revolt musicals - nor did I do many gigs in the US or practice my uke every day, but I probably asked a bit too much of myself. All in all I should consider 2025 an annus perhaps not quite mirabilis, but certainly bonus, prosperus, felix et secundus - and be very grateful for itSo what are my goals this year? They're not unlike last year.Love and Family* Be a good dad to Samuel, Eliza, Lola and Ferdie, and to daughter-in-law, Millie.* Be a good grandad to Cecilia.* Be a good son to my mum.* Get a girlfriend.Kisses on a Postcard* Get the script as good as it can possibly be (happening as we speak).* Get a s**t hot director and cast* Raise 10 million quid* Shoot the next great musical.Easy!MoneySame as last year. Invest well and grow my net worth - and the net worth of Flying Frisby readers - by at least 20%. I beat that by some margin in 2025 in what, looking back, was a gift of a year thanks to gold, silver and the miners. If you live in the Third World Country such as the UK, I urge you to own gold or silver. The pound is going to be further devalued. The bullion dealer I recommend is The Pure Gold Company. Pricing is competitive, quality of service is high. They deliver to the UK, the US, Canada and Europe or you can store your gold with them. More here.Hard to see things being as easy in 2026, but I've got my eye on a few things. I will keep you very much in the loop. You know you should.Work & Career - Laughter, Acclaim, Opportunity* Grow the Flying Frisby by 20% in subscribers and revenue. Break into the Top 50. (Currently 60th)* Comedy - keep storming the gigs, land more tour dates in bigger venues selling more tickets* Promote The Secret History of Gold really well in the US when it launches in May* Build my online presence as both comic and commentator - I've got a specific plan for this* Keep writing songs and material, get better at the uke and make a start on guitarHealth, Body & MindI'm 76kg (12 stone/167lb). My weight has crept up these last few months, mainly since my habit of fasting has fallen by the wayside. I hit 67kg (10 ½ stone, 147lb) at one point in 2024 leading to several interventions from friends telling me I looked like a lesbian Gary Lineker. Maybe. But I felt great. I reckon my ideal weight is 72kg (11st 7, 160lb). So get there and stay there. Which means:* Fasting more regularly* Weights two or three times a week* Something aerobic two or three times a week* Daily stretching - dead hangs, pelvic floors, neck exercises* Stay off the booze* Eat more protein and starve that sweet tooth* Play more racket sports (good for the brain apparently). More tennis and table tennis, get into padel and pickleball.PLUS* Morning breathing practice and regular meditation/prayer* Read another 15 booksWish me luck! What about you - what are your goals for the year? Stick them in the comments if you fancy making yourself accountable tooIn the meantime, let me wish you a happy, healthy and prosperous 2026.I'll be back mid-week with my annual predictions piece.Until next time,DominicPS I was planning to take Christmas and New Year off. Never mind.PPS The tax loss trade is now positioned and ready to go. Take a look. This is a public episode. He's one of the most recognisable faces in the UK for his work on - and off - the pitch. A prolific goalscorer for England turned host of the BBC's iconic Match of the Day TV programme. Now embarking on a new chapter with his hugely-popular The Rest is Football podcast, Gary Lineker sits down with John Obi Mikel and Chris McHardy to reminisce. And there's plenty on the agenda. From his fallout with Johan Cruyff to his close bond with Terry Venables, and from the embarrassment of shitting himself at Italia ‘90 to the heartbreak of losing a World Cup semi-final. And there's questions. What hurt more? Defeat to Diego Maradona's Argentina in ‘86 or that loss to Germany in ‘90? Who is better - Scholes, Gerrard and Lampard? And why is Cristiano Ronaldo not on Lionel Messi or Maradona's level. He also speaks powerfully about his son's childhood leukaemia battle, how it changed his outlook on life, and why being able to look himself in the mirror matters more than any headline. #KemiBadenoch #ToryConference #StampDuty #BritishPubs #NigelFarage #Jon Gaunt #MargaretThatcher #GaryNeville Kemi Badenoch has exploded onto the national stage with a powerhouse conference speech that's shaking up British politics. Her promise to scrap Stamp Duty and defend our Great British pubs has people calling her the new Iron Lady — the next Margaret Thatcher. Meanwhile, Gary Neville is under fire for his attacks on the National Anthem and our flag, with fans demanding that Sky TV sack him. Tonight, Jon Gaunt is LIVE at 6.30 — fiery, unfiltered, and unapologetic — as Britain debates whether Kemi Badenoch is the future of Conservatism and whether Gary Neville has finally gone too far. Kemi Badenoch's knockout conference speech has lit up British politics! Her promise to scrap Stamp Duty will be cheered in every home — and her defence of our great British pubs has the nation raising a glass. Finally, a Tory with backbone and belief! Could this be the rebirth of real Conservatism — and is Kemi the new Iron Lady, the next Margaret Thatcher? Meanwhile, Gary Neville — once an England hero — has turned into a national embarrassment. From refusing to sing the anthem to sneering at our flag, he's insulted the very fans who made him rich. Sky TV must act — viewers are cancelling in disgust. Neville's morphing into another Gary Lineker with a chip on his shoulder and sixth-form politics in his head. Join the debate LIVE — Kemi's rise, Neville's fall, and why Britain's fighting spirit is back!

Gary Lineker boots Ant and Dec off their 23-year throne to win Presenter of the Year at the NTAs – and in doing so, delivers a perfectly tailored two fingers to the BBC. We bask in his glory before plunging into darker waters: the shocking murder of Charlie Kirk in Utah, the grotesque opportunism that followed, and the rank hypocrisy of those who once worshipped at the altar of “free speech.”Then to London, where Tommy Robinson and Elon Musk headline the biggest far-right rally in years – complete with MAGA hats, flag-burning and chants of “send them home.” We pick through the bile, the lies about numbers, and what this march tells us about the hollowing out of our national life. Jemma and Marina discuss at length what follows a very bleak week of news and find it cathartic. They hope you do too. Plus: Trump shows his usual lack of empathy, a US pastor nails the Kirk debate in a way few others could, and Sonny Green delivers our pudding with This Is England.Thank you for sharing and do tweet us @MarinaPurkiss @jemmaforte @TheTrawlPodcast Patreonhttps://patreon.com/TheTrawlPodcast Youtubehttps://www.youtube.com/@TheTrawl Twitterhttps://twitter.com/TheTrawlPodcastIf you've even mildly enjoyed The Trawl, you'll love the unfiltered, no-holds-barred extras from Jemma & Marina over on Patreon, including:• Exclusive episodes of The Trawl Goss – where Jemma and Marina spill backstage gossip, dive into their personal lives, and often forget the mic is on• Early access to The Trawl Meets…• Glorious ad-free episodesPlus, there's a bell-free community of over 3,300 legends sparking brilliant chat. And it's your way to support the pod which the ladies pour their hearts, souls (and occasional anxiety) into. Summer's over, the kids are back at school — and frankly, some adults in Britain could do with joining them. In this Trawl, Marina Purkiss and Jemma Forte sift through the week's chaos on social media, from Reform UK's genius plan to cut deals with the Taliban, to Rylan's unexpected audition for GB News, to a bread shortage that isn't quite a crisis.Expect satire, sharp commentary, and clips that will make you laugh, groan, and possibly scream into the nearest pillow. Along the way, we meet Malcolm — who gifts us with the ultimate Schrödinger's immigrant argument — applaud Rosie Holt's pitch-perfect parody, and tip our hats to the great British sense of humour in the face of utter nonsense and a lot of painted roundabouts. As ever, the Trawl delivers: politics, parody, and plenty of posts you might have missed but definitely won't forget.Jemma and Marina would love you to cast your vote for Gary Lineker as best presenter in this year's NTA's - here's the link - voting ends Sep 12th. Today on The Two Matts podcast, Matthew d'Ancona and I again respond to your queries. After this week's exclusive interview with Gary Lineker on Gaza, the BBC and podcasting we discuss whether sport - and sports personalities - can ever be truly apolitical. Also, has political podcasting now become more influential than newspapers?Plus, we talk about whether cancel culture has peaked and what advice we'd offer 16 and 17-year-olds before voting for the first time. Finally, as Harry Frankfurt's classic philosophical book, On Bullshit, is being republished to mark its 20th anniversary, we ask whether there is more bullshit around today than there was in 2005.Have a question to stump the two Matts? Former BBC football presenter Gary Lineker is once again at the centre of controversy — but is he being celebrated for challenging power, or exposed for double standards? Journalist Jonathan Sacerdoti joins me to unpack what's really happening behind the scenes at the BBC. We discuss: • Why Gary Lineker's departure puts the BBC in an awkward position • Claims of crass, ugly behaviour (Peter Bleksley's damning article) • The hypocrisy of BBC alumni like Emily Maitlis, Owen Jones & The News Agents • The quiet integrity of comedians like Jimmy Carr • The strange silence on anti-Semitism and grooming gang scandals • The rise of ideologically driven media figures who once relied on BBC credibility • We also explore the broader issue: Can journalists still have private opinions without backlash? Eni Aluko was the darling of the woke establishment—until one comment about Ian Wright brought it all crashing down. After our explosive debate on Heretics, she sent me a barrage of private messages, revealing far more than she intended. What started as a polite disagreement became one of the most controversial moments in sports punditry. Why was Eni really forced out of the Women's Football Awards? Why did the media turn on one of their own? And how did she become the target of the very outrage culture she once championed? In this video, I break down: - The viral moment that got Eni cancelled - Her private messages to me—and what they reveal - Why her comment about Ian Wright was the wrong target at the wrong time - The silent rebellion inside football against woke orthodoxy - What this saga tells us about race, gender, and power in modern media This is more than a media scandal—it's a story about identity, hypocrisy, and the fragile rules of the woke game. And for once, Eni Aluko wasn't holding the cards.
