Today on The Two Matts podcast, Matthew d'Ancona and I again respond to your queries. After this week's exclusive interview with Gary Lineker on Gaza, the BBC and podcasting we discuss whether sport - and sports personalities - can ever be truly apolitical. Also, has political podcasting now become more influential than newspapers?Plus, we talk about whether cancel culture has peaked and what advice we'd offer 16 and 17-year-olds before voting for the first time. Finally, as Harry Frankfurt's classic philosophical book, On Bullshit, is being republished to mark its 20th anniversary, we ask whether there is more bullshit around today than there was in 2005.Have a question to stump the two Matts? In episode 298 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with Garry Miller. Garry is a communications professional and worked as a publicist in the BBC Sport communications team at the same time our Founder Freddie worked at the BBC. Garry's first proper job was working for Wigan Council, where he cut his teeth across a range of areas including policy, project management and investigating benefit fraud. His big break came when England hosted the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. The organisers put a call-out for volunteers, including one role of press officer for the tournament. Garry applied for the role and was successful. He then took 6-8 weeks of annual leave just to do the role. After the World Cup finished, he went back to his day job but it wasn't the same. He had got the sport bug and wanted to get back in the industry. He started volunteering for the Wigan Warriors rugby league team to help with their game day operations and unfortunately was then made redundant from the council. Afterwards, he landed a job with the Rugby Football League, the sport's organising body in England and worked for them for four years. He had the opportunity to work with the England national team and at all major events for the sport, including the Challenge Cup tournament, ‘Magic Weekend' and the Super League Grand Final. After four years, he felt he had done everything he could in that role and he saw an opportunity at the BBC in their Sport team. From there, he worked on every big BBC Sport announcement and campaign you can probably think of, as well as podcasts and setting up interviews for all the titans who worked there at the time, including the likes of Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer. In 2022, Garry left the BBC and moved to a new role with the Trust Alliance Group (TAG). Based in Warrington, TAG provide a range of products and services to build, maintain and restore trust between consumers and businesses. In this episode we discuss Garry's career from Wigan Council days to where he is now, the glitz and glamour years in the Beeb, and why he wanted to leave to do a role which provided him with more purpose and impact. For Garry's mental health, we discuss a period of struggle he went through whilst working at the BBC around five or six years ago. We discuss the factors behind it, being prescribed medication, which he is still on now, the positives its brought and the side-effects and the support he had at that time in work and outside of it. We finish by discussing his partner's post-natal depression when his son was born. We talk about the impact that witnessing her mental health difficulties had on him and how he supported her through taking on more caring responsibilities for his son until his partner was able to overcome what she was going through. Gary Lineker has given his first interview since leaving the BBC to The New World. The Two Matts reflect on the wide range of issues he touches on - not least his sacking from the BBC and accusations of antisemitism he faced. “I'm not antisemitic,” he says. “I'm anti the killing of children.” Also this week - how good were Oasis at Wembley (superb) and how mad was the visit of Trump to Scotland (surreal). We're joined by an icon of the game for the final episode of Season 4 of The Football Museum! Gary Lineker opens up on his exit from Match of the Day - so how will he spend his Saturdays now? The England legend recalls the ups and downs of playing for the Three Lions - hear what he remembers about Diego Maradona's infamous 'Hand of God', and what he wanted to do after the Argentine's stunning second goal against England back in 1986. Gary's record of most goals at World Cups for England could soon broken by Harry Kane - will he be hate-watching the finals in 2026? Gary also remembers his life-changing hat-trick in El Clasico, Paul Gascoigne's emu - and tears in 1990 - and as a special treat we allow him to banish two football memories, though one of them he'd much rather have flushed away... The Dead Ringers team are back to train their vocal firepower on the week's news with an armoury of impressive impressions. This week: Greta Thunberg floats her boat at Rachel Reeves, Trump and Elon couple up on Love Island, and Gary Lineker tries something new.Cast: Jan Ravens, Jon Culshaw, Jess Robinson, Kieran Hodgson and Duncan Wisbey. The episode was written by: Nev Fountain and Tom Jamieson, Laurence Howarth, Edward Tew, Tom Coles, Rob Darke, Sophie Dickson, Toussaint Douglas, Jon Holmes, Nicky Roberts, Jennifer Walker, Phoebe Butler, David Whitehead, Rachel E. This episode begins with Jemma and Marina explaining why they weren't aligned this week for pretty much the first time in Trawl history, though their disagreement was quickly put to rest once they'd consulted listeners and asked what you think. There's a quick goodbye to the MOTD version of Gary Lineker and then, it's straight into what's happening in politics here in the UK. However, before they get round to the newly announced Reform manifesto, they feel it's only fair to check in with Tory HQ. Someone's got to after all. There's not a huge amount to report apart from Kemi Badenoch being roasted by Trevor Phillips, Robert Jenrick turning into a London Underground vigilante with more than a dash of Alan Partridge and one very unaware tweet. Then it's time to break down some of what Farage had to say, only you'll be pleased to note that one clip of Natasha Devon will blow your mind and give you hope. It certainly had that effect on the Trawl ladies and begs the question why getting do Reform get so much airtime? When Farage starts lecturing women on what they should and shouldn't be able to decide about their own bodies, it's time to look at the kind of people who agree with him. Some hilarious takes follow; A bumper under rated clip and tweet section comes next and the clip of Trump being insulted and sulking like a petulant toddler is almost as funny as the one of a regretful Musk who is clearly not allowed to play with the big boys at The White House any more. Leader of the Lib Dems, Ed Davey, makes a good point about how well that's gone for him. Pudding ends the episode where it began with one from the Broken News vaults belonging to brilliant comedians, Larry and Paul. Enjoy! Former BBC football presenter Gary Lineker is once again at the centre of controversy — but is he being celebrated for challenging power, or exposed for double standards? Journalist Jonathan Sacerdoti joins me to unpack what's really happening behind the scenes at the BBC. We discuss: • Why Gary Lineker's departure puts the BBC in an awkward position • Claims of crass, ugly behaviour (Peter Bleksley's damning article) • The hypocrisy of BBC alumni like Emily Maitlis, Owen Jones & The News Agents • The quiet integrity of comedians like Jimmy Carr • The strange silence on anti-Semitism and grooming gang scandals • The rise of ideologically driven media figures who once relied on BBC credibility • We also explore the broader issue: Can journalists still have private opinions without backlash? Gary Lineker will leave the BBC this weekend but why has it come to this?On Free State, Joe and Dion look at how Lineker had a target on his back for years but when he spoke out about Gaza, the clock was ticking. They examine how inequality is now hardwired into systems and ask what can be done about it.Joe also has a story of inequality of his own and naturally it involves the Mayo footballers. Eni Aluko was the darling of the woke establishment—until one comment about Ian Wright brought it all crashing down. After our explosive debate on Heretics, she sent me a barrage of private messages, revealing far more than she intended. What started as a polite disagreement became one of the most controversial moments in sports punditry. Why was Eni really forced out of the Women's Football Awards? Why did the media turn on one of their own? And how did she become the target of the very outrage culture she once championed? In this video, I break down: - The viral moment that got Eni cancelled - Her private messages to me—and what they reveal - Why her comment about Ian Wright was the wrong target at the wrong time - The silent rebellion inside football against woke orthodoxy - What this saga tells us about race, gender, and power in modern media This is more than a media scandal—it's a story about identity, hypocrisy, and the fragile rules of the woke game. And for once, Eni Aluko wasn't holding the cards.
