SHOW NOTES Knight shares how work became a distraction? [1:30] How does one navigate away from distractions. [2:22] The power of prayer and meditation? [20:37] QUOTES Work was my distraction from fulfilling other responsibilities. [4:27] God will sometimes put you in a place where you’re forced to be present. [7:18] Social media provides people with the same gratification and it’s still a distraction. [11:03] I can see how social media molds what content these larger companies put out. [13:53] I can’t complain about what’s out there if I’m choosing to follow the junk. [15:26] CIRCLE CHALLENGE We encourage you to identify your distractions and make it a priority to address them. On this episode we explore how living a productive and meaningful life is a balancing act. With the pressures of today’s demanding and high paced world, most people struggle to find a reasonable balance. We can easily be drawn away from our priorities when one aspect of our life consumes the bulk of our time. To a large extent, it is much like walking a tightrope. When we drift too much in one direction or the other, we become unbalanced. The guys share a few tools on how to sustain what we value most in our lives. We want you to find your balance in order achieve your purpose and goals. Enjoy. SHOW NOTES Russ goes all in on transparency by highlighting how he maintains distant relationships. [1:46] Who and what would you say is in your social diet? [2:22] Lang challenges the guys on how to balance work and everything else. [3:24] Family, friends, and frolleagues? [9:02] Russ poses a question, does our community look for ways to create wedges in healthy relationships? [18:06] QUOTES Sometimes people remind you why you haven’t seen them in a while. [1:47] I have learned how to love people from afar and accept them for who they are, and I don’t have to critique or judge them for where they are, I can just appreciate them from far away. [2:05] Sometimes you feel like the odd man out or the stranger in a room full of people you’ve known for 10 years. [3:02] Is it ok that we spend most of our time away from the people who we are committed to doing life with? [3:37] My 5 to midnight is more important than my 9 to 5. So often, having a mentor can help you navigate this life journey better, but not all mentors are good for you. Our conversation today focuses on how growth often leads to a shift in who you listen and look up to. We have found that if you open a door for someone, they’ll often walk out on their own. SHOW NOTES Russ shares what happens when you experience the wrong mentor. [0:58] Lang poses the question, can informal mentorship have the same impact on people the way formal mentorship does? [4:04] Knight salutes Dre for being a guide that gives him advice both formally and informally. [6:04] The guys talk about how informal mentorship can be powerful and how being intrinsically motivated influences one's actions. [8:30] QUOTES I have benefited from being in certain rooms that my performance, work ethic and last name did not earn. It’s simply been based on the fact that someone thought enough about me to want to pour into my life. [3:13] If they were a great mentor, you’d look for opportunities to sing their praises. [3:54] One of the things that I’m realizing is that you can’t necessarily go to the internet and find wisdom. I prefer to learn from tried, tested and true wisdom from someone who's experienced it especially if they’ve gone through this journey in a body or form similar to mine. [8:51] I’ve gone through some things because I’ve let go of some relationships that got me to where I was. [9:22] There’s invaluable information and knowledge that you can gain from another person and it doesn’t have to be formal. [10:20] The people I look up to the most are the people I cannot reach. [11:20] CIRCLE CHALLENGE How can you encourage men in your life to seek self-development? In what ways can we create more opportunities for women leaders in business? If you have a mentor, cherish them. If you don’t, try to find one, but always remember, the lack of formal mentorship does not have to prevent you from reaching your destination. And don’t forget to give us 5 stars and hit that subscribe button! SHOW NOTES Lang shares how he sought to find mentors and how finding Ken Anmpy became a catalyst for his business and beyond. [1:12] The guys highlight how Carlton Goode has influenced generations of men from VCU including Ali, Lang and Knight. [2:34] Ali tackles the differences between mentors you can call or meet with rather than those you learn and connect with from a distance. [6:13] The guys share how to find the mentors you want and need. [10:48] The tables turn and the fellas outline the importance of not wasting the time of those who choose to mentor you. [14:01] The guys discuss how all leaders can close the gap between those who aspire to reach where you are but think it’s unattainable? [18:40] Ali shares an aha moment where he realized his life has actually changed because of mentorship. [21:42] QUOTES I have benefited so much from mentors and leaders that have pulled me to the side and help cultivate certain skill sets I have. [0:42] Finding a mentor is so important because you will find yourself growing in areas you either neglected or didn't even know was there. [5:38] The connection makes a difference, it makes it special. [6:50] I could’ve been able to navigate the valleys a little bit more efficiently and effectively if i would've had that person who was able to grow with me during this stage in life. [9:29] You know the areas in which you want to be mentored, you can be mentored in various areas of life, spiritual mentor - business mentor, identify potential mentors in closer proximity and reach out.[11:19] When we say being worth time, this is something anyone can change in a matter of seconds. Just being committed to your goals is being worth time. [17:32] You can sense the level of hunger some people have. [17:48] Make it meaningful... and you have to be willing to meet people where they are. [18:40] Constantly be observing especially if somebody is going to pour into you their time, talent, and treasure. [23:51] CIRCLE CHALLENGE Do you have mentors? SHOW NOTES Knight thanks Lang for helping him deal with stress in the midst of the storm even when he didn’t want to. [1:03] Ali talks about adjusting to college life and how meditation helped him prepare for the distractions that come along with being a freshman. [3:20] The fellas share that if you take a pause and be still, you're allowing yourself to react differently to negative situations whenever they occur. [5:21] Ali shares how the breathing exercise they practiced before the episode helped him in more ways than one. [9:15] Have you heard of Yogaville? [11:32] The guys share what they breathed in and what they released out during their deep breathing exercises. [15:31] How do we navigate a society that tells us we’re not worthy? [18:15] Don’t allow anyone to put you into a box. [20:53] The guys share what happens when you “Be Still” to become the best version of you. [25:16] QUOTES Just because the tool is there doesn’t mean in the right place to use it. [2:45] I’m not saying that you’re going to have a problem, meditate and immediately your problems will be solved. But, you will gain clarity. [6:09] Creating that break between what I feel and how I respond will completely change how you start to respond to the emotions you feel. [8:47] Formal education is important. Mentorship, guidance, coaching, teaching is important. There’s somebody who has figured this out already at least this little piece you’re going through. [12:09] Ego hides humility. [14:57] I know who I am, and I know who I belong to, and that's enough. If you give me the title, that's cool, but it's not required anymore. [17:10] You’re here to serve other people but you can’t serve their expectations. [19:54] Part of my mindfulness journey was learning perspective, getting out from within myself. [1:31] Ali says, reflecting helps him clear his head, and he uses the app Headspace to set time on his calendar daily. [3:44] Lang expresses how he’d tell his younger self how to balance the climb and grind with being mindful. [8:56] The fellas talk about how prayer and the act of releasing from the inside out can feel so therapeutic. [10:18] Prayer writes your heart, prayer exacts your words in ways that you aren’t consciously doing every day, and that’s sometimes is the most beautiful space we can be in. [12:58] Lang shares his personal journey which proves to be quite encouraging because of his transparency. [13:58] Ali shares how a float tank helped him recalibrate stress through sensory deprivation. [24:29] The guy's conversation reveals that men are taught to handle pressure but need help learning how to relieve it. Let us know you handle pressure. QUOTES In order to achieve the transformation we are all seeking, a constant go as you grow, you have to set time aside and apply consistent effort with a full heart. [4:17] I had to get out of my own way… I had to look myself in the mirror and tell myself I can't hoop all my problems away. [8:20] Do whatever you have to do to figure out how to center yourself, know who you are, and then let the best of you be reflected in this world. [9:46] My mom was so focused on preparing me for the outside world that I don’t know if I was prepared to win on the inside. [11:07] I was prepared to face war on the outside, but I was not prepared to win the war with myself. [11:30] You don’t know what you’re not prepared for until it’s time for you to face it. [17:03]   Lang says women who successfully lead single-family homes are microCEO's and men should look to invest in them. [18:58]   G salutes his father for the example of perseverance and sacrifice he demonstrated growing up. [22:18]    QUOTES You can't win a war if you're always fighting. [5:46]   It's our responsibility to change the culture in ways that we think are necessary and healthy. [7:33]   Champion those alongside you, build those up behind you and those before you honor them. [19:30]   QUOTES People undervalue what it means to bring life into this world [1:18]   I had to leave home for me to appreciate how beautiful life is. [3:31]   I want to be the change that I want to see in the community... I want to be a good dad because I know what it feels like not to have it. [6:18]   Thank God that women are the strongest beings on this planet, because of their strength, it has become normal for men to run from their responsibilities. [7:53]   What I went through this past week, the way I’ve been able to respond, is only the result of how He’s been faithful to me. [12:07]   God births you on a soul level, this color and these cultures that we choose to relate to is only surface deep.
