TSFU Ep. 163- Exotic Animal Cults: Doc Antle and "Chimp Crazy"

That's So F****d Up

If you watched Tiger King on Netflix in 2020, you probably remember the a**hole with a long ponytail who constantly dresses like he's on safari and surrounds himself with skinny women who like like Jane from Tarzan, constantly toting tigers on leashes. That man was Doc Antle, owner of Myrtle Beach Safari, the "zoo" that inspired Joe Exotic to open The Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. Antle started off as a magician who got real tight with famous Guru Swami Satchidananda Saraswati, and became somewhat of a celebrity at Swami's Yogaville compound in Virginia. He began claiming to be a doctor and enlightened being, amassing followers and abusing teenage girls, and things only got crazier from there. Antle is a notorious abuser of big cats, but today's story more focuses on Antle himself and the cult that he runs, but calls a "wildlife preserve".TW: Animal abuse and severe maimingSPOILERS:Ash and Fallon also discuss Max's new docuseries Chimp Crazy and one of the most insane stories Ash has ever heard. "Former nurse-turned-exotic-animal-broker Tonia Haddix spends her days caring for animals in captivity, referring to herself as the "Dolly Parton of chimps." However, her limitless love for one chimpanzee spins into a wild cat-and-mouse game with authorities and an animal rights group. Through the experiences of Tonia and other "chimp moms," "Chimp Crazy" is a series that reveals the bonds between owners and their highly intelligent great ape pets, as well as the risks to the welfare of the animals themselves."- WikipediaPlay Bingo with us! The discussion centers on the concept of Dharma, or life purpose, and explores how individuals can discover and align with their true calling. The conversation delves into the importance of listening to the heart rather than the mind, emphasizing activities that bring joy and love, such as community engagement and connecting with nature. Dominique and Avi discuss the balance between selfless service and personal well-being, highlighting the necessity of setting boundaries to prevent burnout. They examine the relationship between the mind and the heart, proposing that while the mind operates based on past experiences, the heart guides toward new possibilities and deeper fulfillment. The episode also touches on societal pressures and the challenges of maintaining faith and peace in the face of financial and practical uncertainties. Ultimately, the podcast encourages listeners to follow their heart and live a life true to their inner purpose, despite external expectations and obstacles.--Dominique Aramati has been practicing yoga for over 15 years, is a dedicated kirtaniya, and an outdoor enthusiast. She first came to Yogaville as an infant to visit her grandmother, Aurelie Knapik, who was a part of Yogaville's community for over 20 years. In addition to her spiritual pursuits, she has explored various hobbies including non-fiction writing, large-scale abstract painting, hiking, snowboarding, skateboarding, and surfing. She enjoys spending as much time outdoors as possible and loves to share this passion with others. Dominique graduated from James Madison University's School of Media Arts & Design in 2016, majoring in Journalism and Creative Writing, with elective coursework in art history and environmental science. Before Yogaville, she traveled extensively along the East Coast in a Sprinter Van, working for ENO (Eagles Nest Outfitters), and spent seven seasons working at ski resorts while teaching yoga. She now owns her own digital marketing company: Hawk Intuitive, where she provides an array of marketing support. Dominique continues to deepen her spiritual practice through kirtan, connecting with nature, and fostering meaningful relationships with others. Hosted on Acast. We're baaaaa-aaaaackkkkk! This week the gals kick off season 8 chatting about Doc Antle, cult leader and possibly the most villainous character from the hit Netflix series Tiger King. Jeepers Creepers! Antle is a notorious abuser of big cats, but today's story more focuses on Antle himself and the cult that he runs, but calls a "wildlife preserve".-For more info about today's story, check out our sources at tsfuthepodcast.com/blog.-To play the new and improved version of "Cult Bingo" with us (for a chance to win a FREE month of Patreon) head over to tsfuthepodcast.com/bingo!-Or if you'd just like to support your gals and the show, you can head over to patreon.com/TSFU and join for as little as $5 a month! Shalom, This week's episode of The Jewish yogi welcomes Harris Lender and Evan Cohn, the couple that created and run the wonderful course "Yoga Yeladim", the only Jewish Kids Yoga program in the country! It is the ultimate fusion of Jewish learning, body awareness and spiritual understanding all rolled up into a Yoga mat. It provides teachers tools to incorporate Yoga and meditation with a Jewish curriculum. Yoga Yeladim is a program that branched out of Kidding around yoga, an incredible comprehensive children's yoga teacher training that is through the Satchiananda lineage. These are 2 great training programs that I highly recommend. Kidding Around Yoga was founded in 2009 by Haris “Harini” Lender (AKA Momma KAY). Haris is a certified Integral Yoga teacher at the 500 level. She has also been certified in Prenatal, Raja, Children's, and Stress Management. She spent 11 years running Camp Yogaville and for the last 9 years at her own summer sleepover yoga camp in Florida. Haris is extremely grateful to her teacher Swami Satchidananda, and to all of the Swamis, friends, and teachers at Yogaville that have helped guide her over the years. She is also thankful for her parents who gave her the insanely creative ability to write songs and invent lots of fun activities for the kids, and her husband Evan… AKA POPPA KAY, who is right there by her side helping her with ALL THINGS KAY! Haris and Evan discuss creating the business and making a program that is authentic yoga while being kosher for Jewish children. Haris also shares about her father, Murray Lender (yes of Lender's Bagels"), and visiting Yogaville for a weekend of The Swami, The Rabbi, ad the Bagel Baker. Sherri began her inner voyage in 2009. Sherri was struggling with her weight (230+ lbs.) and her mental health. Something had to change because her life was no longer working for her. She found a yoga class and bellydancing on Fit TV that resonated and she began to practice. In 2011 she connected to the hula hoop. In 2013, Sherri prayed to be put on her Shamanic path, months later she found herself in prison. She had the opportunity to learn her deepest truths and gain deep innerstanding. She was blessed with the opportunity to read amazing books, become vegetarian/vegan, attended and was honored to learn Lakota tradition and ceremony. She also taught her first yoga class to fellow inmates. Released in 2014, she received her first certification in Herbal Medicine. In 2015, Sherri attended Yogaville and received her first diploma. She also received her Reiki Master/Teacher Certification the same year. In 2018, she moved from South Dakota to Florida. Her travels took her north to Vermont in 2019 where she created Wild Woods Naturally Naked. In 2020 she returned to Florida and ZenfiniTea. Sherri has chosen to make a home here and today she is blessed to give back and honor the manifestation she brought forward from her prison ashram. Humbly, she reminds herself to “practice” 1000 times a day and simply makes each moment an little bit better than the last.

It's because the mind just relaxes - there's no conflict or second guessing like 'was that a good bargain?' * If we're connected to our peace, we can keep everything in perspective, and then if we don't get what we really wanted, "ok, well, maybe something better's coming but it doesn't really matter because I feel content.Mitra Somerville has lived and trained in Integral Yoga communities in Australia, New York and Yogaville, Virginia. She has been practicing yoga since 1990 when she was introduced to Integral Yoga as a Physical Education credit as a Freshman in university. After her studies she traveled and lived all over the world, maintaining her own yoga practice and learning from different traditions. The turning point for her was 13 years after her first yoga experience, in Paris studying Integral Yoga once again. This was the moment that her yoga journey moved beyond a physical practice to a deeper exploration of all branches of yoga and I began studying and practicing at Yogaville, Virginia the teachings of Swami Sachidananda. It was during her training as a Pre and Postnatal Yoga teacher with Uma Dinsmore-Tuli that she truly understood that yoga for women is not modifications of the traditional practice. Instead, the true power of women's yoga is guided by the wisdom and energy in the natural female cycle. Delving deeper into these practices she also trained with Uma in Well Woman Yoga Therapy. Her practice follows the wisdom of the hidden voices of traditional yoga, the Mahavidyas, the female wisdom goddesses, grounding them with a sound understanding of female anatomy, pelvic floor function, and hormone health to create a yoga practice that embraces a woman's natural, cyclical power and energy flow. She draw from what she has learned in her studies, including teachings of Tammy Lynn Kent and Alexandra Pope, and training with Francoise Freedman in Fertility Yoga, and Leslie Howard in Pelvic Floor Yoga. She also followed her dharma to create practices centered around Well Woman Yoga Therapy. After all these experiences, Sharon decided to create her own Pre & Post Natal Yoga Teacher Training with EFV Lab, thanks yo her friend Amanda Dates. "Perhaps most of all, my work is empowering women to support other women." It's important for her practice to continue to study all branches of yoga, and all things related to women's pelvic health. The Buddha (sometimes translated as “the Opened One”) in the East, and Socrates in the West, were more interested in questioning answers than in answering questions. What are the rules for proper engagement in the process of inquiry? What are the right questions? How do we properly hold the answers, and when do we look to others or to the world altogether (symbolic guru) for confirmation? Elizabeth is an authority on the “middle way” teachings, and elegantly shows us how “everything leans,” or arises in dependence on everything else. The conversation explores how seemingly esoteric teachings have tremendous application in daily life. What are the near enemies of openness, and how does openness relate to emptiness? Where does fear fit into all this, and can we bring fear onto the path? The discussion also explores how to work with and digest unwanted experiences (like political and social unrest or COVID 19), and the principle of “authentic consumerism.” Her passion and enthusiasm are on display in this lively conversation, and reveal why Elizabeth is one of the most beloved and sought-after teachers of Buddhism in the West. - LINKS: - "Dreams of Light" Book Study Group: www.andrewholecek.com/dreams-of-ligh…k-study-group/ - Yogaville program [online] Graceful Exit: Preparing for a Good Death: www.yogaville.org/programs/9298/gr…od-death-online/ -The Power of An Open Question by Elizabeth Mattis Namgyel: www.elizabethmattisnamgyel.com/the-power…-question

This is an opportunity to practice mindfulness - paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, and without judgement. Mindfulness has proven to enhance our communication skills, overall performance, and satisfaction across every area of life. After listening, please let us know how this format affected your ability to connect with the content. SHOW NOTES Knight thanks Lang for helping him deal with stress in the midst of the storm even when he didn’t want to. [1:03] Ali talks about adjusting to college life and how meditation helped him prepare for the distractions that come along with being a freshman. [3:20] The fellas share that if you take a pause and be still, you're allowing yourself to react differently to negative situations whenever they occur. [5:21] Ali shares how the breathing exercise they practiced before the episode helped him in more ways than one. [9:15] Have you heard of Yogaville? [11:32] The guys share what they breathed in and what they released out during their deep breathing exercises. [15:31] How do we navigate a society that tells us we’re not worthy? [18:15] Don’t allow anyone to put you into a box. [20:53] The guys share what happens when you “Be Still” to become the best version of you. [25:16] QUOTES Just because the tool is there doesn’t mean in the right place to use it. [2:45] I’m not saying that you’re going to have a problem, meditate and immediately your problems will be solved. But, you will gain clarity. [6:09] Creating that break between what I feel and how I respond will completely change how you start to respond to the emotions you feel. [8:47] Formal education is important. Mentorship, guidance, coaching, teaching is important. There’s somebody who has figured this out already at least this little piece you’re going through. [12:09] Ego hides humility. [14:57] I know who I am, and I know who I belong to, and that's enough. If you give me the title, that's cool, but it's not required anymore. [17:10] You’re here to serve other people but you can’t serve their expectations. [19:54] Part of my mindfulness journey was learning perspective, getting out from within myself. Today's interview is with Yogeswari Jessica Bertin, founder of Twisted and Found, and it's a *great* one. YJB is one of my dearest friends - we met working in specialty coffee back in 2008 - and she is now also a yoga teacher and practitioner. We laugh because our conversations always skip the "how are you"s and go straight to deep conversations about living our yoga and being present in the world. After she last visited in January, I realized it was time to get her on the podcast, so you could all hear from her wisdom as well. YJB is an inspiration and example of getting curious about your values and desires in this world and then rearranging life to actually live it. You'll hear in this episode why she initially had no interest in trying yoga, what made her start, and what kept her going in the practice and led her to do her teaching training at Integral Yoga in New York City, and to staff and lead retreats and teacher trainings at Yogaville, the Swami Satchitananda ashram in Virginia. There is so much goodness in this episode about being open to the path that unfolds before you and setting up your life to live completely within your values. I hope you enjoy this podcast - I know I'll be listening in multiple times. Bio: Yogeswari Jessica Bertin is the founder of Twisted and Found, where she makes wreaths and crowns from invasive wild woody vines found in woods around the country. YJB is a certified Integral Yoga Teacher, and spends 3 to 4 months each year staffing retreats and teacher trainings at Yogaville in Virginia. A native New Jersian, YJB teaches Yoga workshops across the country, including Yoga for Baristas, having over a decade of experience in specialty coffee. She is a human, educator, and expert in hospitality. It's Weezer week on Radio Ga Ga! The history of this band and its frontman, Rivers Cuomo, is pretty nuts. Cuomo was obsessed with metal growing up, idolizing Ace Frehley of KISS & shredding guitar in his own metal bands. And this was after growing up in the Yogaville ashram, practicing spirituality instead of toys and cartoons. In this episode, I explain how he got from the ashram life, to hair metal, to Harvard, to being the king of modern nerd rock. Bring your singing voice and your Flying =W=.

Swami Satchidananda explains how to apply the philosophy of Vedanta to problems we face when we identify with our minds, our bodies, or our circumstances in life. He shows how in a statement such as “I know my mind is crazy today” we can extract ourselves from the misidentification that can lead to depression and anxiety. We are not our minds, our bodies, our problems. We have minds, bodies, and challenges in life. He also explains the beauty of Yogaville’s vision: to be an oasis—a village of people living together harmoniously and celebrating the unity in their diversity. Yoga Wisdom with Swami Satchidananda

Swami Satchidananda answers a variety of questions on spiritual topics. He explains that all spiritual practice isn't to give you enlightenment but to reveal the inner light that is there. He is asked about the many benefits of pilgrimage. During his answer he mentions the shrine in Yogaville named for the famed Mount Kailash. He compares the practice of Yoga and its benefits to taking a pilgrimage. He answers a question on how to maintain one’s balance. (c)2017 Satchidananda Ashram–Yogaville, Inc. / www.integralyoga.org
