Everybody talkin' Freedom, but Freedom got a Price Tag—and it's spelled R-I-S-K. JESUS paid it in blood. MLK paid it with his life. Malcolm paid it with truth. And in the financial world? It's the same battlefield—different weapons. Madam C.J. Walker risked it all when Black women had nothing, became the first self-made millionaire. Robert F. Smith walked into private equity when the doors weren't even built for him—now he own the building. Tyler Perry slept in his car chasing vision over comfort, now he own the studios they used to shut us out of. Nipsey bought back the block before it was trendy. Every one of them said: I'll go first. With more than 96 billion dollars in assets under management (as of March 31st 2022), Vista Equity Partners is one of the world's largest and leading software private equity firms. As Founder, Chairman and CEO, this success has helped Robert F. Smith become one of the most respected investors of his generation, being named by Forbes as one of the ‘100 Greatest Living Business Minds' as well as one of the most generous philanthropists of his time. Robert describes his upbringing in Denver, how he secured his first work experience at Bell Labs whilst still at school and his education at Cornell University and Columbia Business School, taking him from engineering to finance. Robert describes working in technology at Goldman Sachs Investment Banking, which included advising a then-troubled Apple as it pivoted to become a platform technology company. He then explains his decision to leave and found Vista Equity Partners in 2000. He talks about the signs that software's importance would mushroom and how today, Vista's 80+ portfolio companies have circa 90,000 employees globally, together comprising one of the world's largest enterprise software companies when combined by revenue, serving over 300 million users. Robert goes on to examine why software has been the most productive economic tool in the last 50 years and explains why he describes today's epoch as the ‘4th Industrial Revolution'. After covering the underlying meaning behind ‘digitization', he provides examples of how his companies have prospered, why their growth trajectory is still so exciting and why software companies are helping to re-shape supply chains and industries across the world. He discusses the merits of private equity versus public listings, the huge gains investors have made in their funds, and why he believes the investment opportunities are still so significant. Robert then talks about his philanthropic work, his view on reaching those communities who have been underserved and what needs to be done and committed to in order to create lasting change for good. The Broncos are for sale. Top officials came out today and quietly announced that the Broncos will be going on auction sometime soon. What happens now? Who is a real candidate for the next team owner? Could it be Jeff Bezos or possibly or a person with local ties like Robert F. Smith? The Broncos retained a powerful team to broker the deal so things could move quickly. Later, Brian Flores is suing the NFL and the Broncos were named specifically in the suit. Nick and John take time to unpack the very unique case the league is now facing. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Broncos named in Brian Flores's lawsuit against NFL for discriminatory hiring practices, Broncos officially on the market, Robert F. Smith not interested in ownership right now, Tom Brady retirement now official, TB12 among greatest QBs and football players of all time, Caleb Williams follows Lincoln Riley to USC, UNC transfer troubles, Winter Olympics are here
Coach Hardaway is sick of y'all asking dumb questions. The guys ponder if the NFL is ready for a Black primary owner with the possibility of Robert F. Smith tossing his name in the hat for the Denver Broncos. LSU hires former TSU standout Cortez Hankton. Divisional weekend is probably the best weekend of football most of us have ever seen. Norwood sees a ton of QB's in the transfer portal and wants Florida to get 1 or 2. Arch Manning is already a million dollar man. Tate Martell aka the college football journeyman retires from NCAA Football. Reggie isn't thrilled Stenson Bennett is returning for an encore. Nobody has been paying attention, but the Luka's Mavs are good. Kevin Ollie is waiting on that direct deposit to hit. Embiid Olujawon is good...and the guys told you so. Grayson Allen is a chump. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays will remain in St. Pete only. BLM wins a horse race and the minor leagues are trying out robot umpires. Sign up to our newsletter for more in-depth insights | Follow us on LinkedIn With more than 77 billion dollars in assets under management (as of March 31st 2021), Vista Equity Partners is one of the world's largest and leading software private equity firms. He talks about the signs that software's importance would mushroom and how today, Vista's 70+ portfolio companies have circa 75,000 employees globally, together comprising one of the world's largest enterprise software companies when combined by revenue, serving over 300 million users.
Robert F. Smith is the Founder, Chairman and CEO, Vista Equity Partners. Vista is a private investment firm that focuses entirely on enterprise software companies and manages $75 billion in assets across private equity, permanent capital, credit and public vehicles. Taken together, Vista's current portfolio companies are about 70 in number and house 70,000 employees, 700,000 customers across 175 countries, and 200 million global users. Its combined revenue would make the portfolio one of the largest enterprise software companies in the world. Our conversation covers Robert's background, the special characteristics of enterprise software, screening potential targets, adding value through industry expertise, assessing management teams, employing operational and financial leverage, and exiting investments. We then turn to managing Vista and the competitive landscape, and close with reflections on Robert's past mistakes and impact through philanthropy. Like many of you, I still remember those teachers that had a positive impact on my educational upbringing. Today's episode is special because we spend time with Virginia Commonwealth University Professor Carlton Goode. Dr Goode taught me the importance of cultivating relationships, he's the reason Ali and I share a friendship, and he's made a career helping young men of color find their way on campus and beyond. Roll Call: Knight, Russ, Ali Guests: VCU Professor Carlton Goode Professor Goode shares how current students at Virginia Commonwealth University feel about the Somebody's Son Podcast. [1:15] Kris reflects on his journey from VCU and challenges the University in a good way. [6:51] The guys praise Chris Langley, and Esmel Meeks for making time to speak to current VCU students. [10:57] Professor Goode explains why he started a class at VCU to develop men of color. [15:23] Ali asks how important is it for universities and academic institutions to develop underrepresented talent on their campuses? [20:01] Kris highlights the importance of bonding across cultures and the opportunity of getting outside of your comfort zone. [23:58] Sincere thanks to Robert F. Smith, Henry Louis Gates, and the team behind Black History in Two Minutes. QUOTES Our content is being circulated in the classrooms that groomed us. [6:40] I've never felt like a professor cared more about me than Mr. Goode did. [13:34] The influence you're having on those kids, even if you don't see the fruit immediately, what you're planting is still worth it. [19:02] Imagine you have a son, what is that one thing you'd give to your son that's not material, the one thing he can keep in his back pocket, that he can pull out, when he's in middle school, college or marriage? [44:50] No matter what I might've accomplished in corporate or in business, I still have another responsibility, beyond my son. Loser Meghan McCain Meghan McCain is asking fans on the west coast to NOT watch today's episode of The View - because fans on the east coast are complaining, after she gave away some pretty major spoilers for Game of Thrones. Winner Robert F Smith An American billionaire technology investor delivered a commencement speech that stunned everyone in the room. Robert F. Smith surprised 400 graduating seniors at Atlanta's Morehouse College by announcing yesterday that his family will pay off all of their student loans. He pledged to wipe out student debt estimated at up to 40-million dollars for the entire class of 2019 at the all-male, historically black college. All he expects in return is for students to someday pay it forward.
Robert F. Smith's life has taken him from the newly de-segregated classrooms of suburban Denver, to Columbia Business School, Goldman Sachs, and eventually to his own private equity firm, Vista Equity Partners. On this episode of the David Rubenstein Show, Smith discusses working as an intern at Bell Labs when he was below the minimum age requirement, becoming the first Goldman Sachs employee to focus solely on M&A in the tech sector, and more.
