#florida #rondesantis #africanamerican #greeklife A bill proposed by Florida state Rep. Alex Andrade that "prohibits a state college, state university, or one of their direct-support organizations, from expending state or federal funds on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs or activities" has generated significant controversy in the U.S. Broadly speaking, the bill increases the authority of the Florida Board of Governors (the governing body of Florida's state university system) to regulate state-funded higher education by terminating the tenure of professors and imposing limits on programs related to "Critical Race Theory" and DEI programs. The Florida state House passed the bill. As of this writing, it was awaiting action in the Senate. The vague language combined with Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis' prior actions in the Florida education sector have led many to raise concerns about the law's effect on classes or organizations discussing or founded around subjects like race. One viral post by comedian D.L. Hughley summarized this interpretation of the bill: AIR-USE COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER: Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, commenting, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. #MSNBC #Viral #News #Food #Grocerystores #Fastfood A food desert is an area with low-access to healthy and affordable food. About 19 million people in America live in a food desert, and it disproportionately affects Black communities. Despite nationwide efforts to improve poor food environments, many of the biggest names in America's grocery industry continue to avoid these neighborhoods. In the midst of a worldwide pandemic and raging protests against police brutality, there's another silent crisis wreaking havoc on America's most vulnerable communities: food deserts. The USDA defines a food desert as a place where at least a third of the population lives greater than one mile away from a supermarket for urban areas, or greater than 10 miles for rural areas. By this definition, about 19 million people in America live in a food desert. The lack of grocery stores in many poor, Black neighborhoods has been a big topic in public policy since Michelle Obama's “Let's Move” campaign in 2010. The initiative was designed to reduce childhood obesity by providing better food in schools and by bringing healthier options to low-income communities using public and private sector funding. Another chief goal of the program was to eliminate food deserts in America within seven years. #SupremelyBlackPodcast #TheSupremelyBlackPodcast #SupremelyBlack #SupremelyBlackPod https://instagram.com/supremely_black_podcast?utm_medium=copy_linkAIR-USE COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER: Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, commenting, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. The F.I.N.D. (Families in Need of Direction) Design is a 501(c)(3) community-based organization founded by Kara James Johnson and Sharese Chapman in 2014. Both black women, who were Michigan natives, were frustrated and saddened by the lack of progress related to safe spaces for black girls and other girls of color in Middle Tennessee. As they saw it, this reality was representative of a bigger problem; the constant failure to understand and "see" black women and how racism, intergenerational trauma, and gender discrimination affect them.
