Craft Collaborations inspire Nappy Roots to open Atlantucky Brewing If you're a regular listener of the show then you've heard us talking with the Nappy Roots crew a few times before. We met the guys back in 2017 as they brewed a collaboration with Monday Night Brewing, Front Porch Pale Ale, to go along with the album of the same name. We were a young show at the time and thrilled to land an interview with the Grammy-nominated quartet. Fish Scales, admittedly the most passionate craft drinker of the group, had a thirst for more beer knowledge. We started chatted regularly about beer, attending festivals, and brewing in Scales' garage. We may not be the typical friends for a couple of rappers, but never underestimate the power of beer. Originally, the plan was to brew collaboration beers to help promote the group. Find a brewery near one of their upcoming shows and brew a beer with them. Through these collaborations they discovered they really loved to brew beer and found many similarities with the music industry in pursuing your creative side. The idea shifted from promotion to a business plan for Atlantucky Brewing. Just like any brewer, the guys learned a lot through process and Skinny shares some tips and pitfalls for those that are looking to start a brewery. Daily operations are handled by Skinny and Scales as they're in Atlanta, but B. Stille and Ron Clutch are behind the project as well, just from their old Kentucky home. You'll see them at the brewery for special events and occasional concerts. Nappy Roots hasn't left the rap game to pursue brewing. They balance a full schedule with studio time early in the week and they're back in the brewhouse later in the week. They have had to cut back on their shows some, performing about two a month compared to 6ish prior to opening the brewery. If you're only familiar with their old stuff, make sure to check out some of their newer music as well. The Atlantucky Brewing Taproom For the most part, taprooms are generally the same. Atlantucky brings a special twist to their space adding an art gallery, event space and, of course, concert venue. They're located just a stone's throw from Mercedes Benz stadium so if you're in town for a game or concert you've got a great spot to pre-game. The location also attracts other artists to work at the brewery. As Skinny says, the space allows them to be around other creatives and continue their passions while having a job.
