A "must-listen-to" podcast on dating and domestic violence from Bill Mitchell, author of the memoir, WHEN DATING HURTS, which is about his daughter's murder by her ex-boyfriend. Bill and his wife lost Kristin to dating violence when she was brutally killed in June 2005. It was 20 days after her college graduation. FACT: 1 in 3 WOMEN suffer serious physical violence at the hands of intimate partners during their lifetimes. Typically, it happens between 16-24 years of age. But can happen at any age. And it doesn't need to happen. Bill interviews experts with keen insights into dating and domestic violence: • "DV" agency counselors • Law enforcement professionals • Parents of children who were either lost to, or somehow survived, dating violence • Actual survivors of domestic violence After you listen to the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast, share it with those who need to hear it... Remember the 1 in 3 women statistic.

Content Warning & Disclaimer Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised. This is the second part of a two-part story with Erin. We interviewed Erin about three years ago, and her story has remained on our minds ever since. So, we're bringing it back to you. Erin was taken advantage of while she was suffering through a highly sensitive passage in her life. Her mother had just passed away. Charlie presented himself as the right answer at the right time. Like many victims, she was an innocent, generous person. The kind of target predators are looking to lure straight into problematic relationships. She became easy prey. The warning signs of potential danger were there, but Erin didn't interpret them. You will learn plenty from this powerful episode. You will see how difficult it is to break from an accomplished abuser. You need to hear Erin's story. Charlie's control over Erin goes off the charts. His demands are ridiculous, but her generous nature forces her to comply with his every request. Be sure you share this WHEN DATING HURTS episode with someone who's dating. Only through education can we help others to see what is plain sight. Karan told me she spent the past several months healing from a deeply harmful relational experience. She understands how stories like hers bring both awareness and healing, and so she wanted to share with us. What makes her story quite so unique? She is a therapist, which gives her a unique dual perspective. As she states: "both understanding relational dynamics (clinically), and living through the reality of them (personally)." The complications she had to solve will find many of us listening to her story more than a few times. Karan's desire is to take such a painful experience and use it to help others feel less alone, more informed, and more empowered to trust themselves. This was precisely what I was hoping she would do and she did this perfectly. Content Warning & Disclaimer Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised. This is part two, the final episode of a two-part story with Julia. The power in this narrative comes from the fact that our survivor, Julia, is a smart person from a good family living in Canada. If she could be coercively controlled, anyone could. She was raised to respect and be helpful to people, and she wanted to trust that everyone was basically good. It was a wonderful outlook on life until a guy named Damon came along. Damon knew how to put on the mask of a thoughtful, generous guy. A guy who had been wronged several times before by women. His presence completely mesmerized Julia right from their first phone call. As you are listening to this story, keep track of the warning signs that Julia either missed or ignored. There are many. Besides a full display of deception, mirroring, pocketing, manipulation, cohesive, control, future faking, gaslighting, financial abuse, and more, we also hear about the ways he isolated her. There are plenty of lessons to be learned. In listening to this story, we ask ourselves what is going on in Julia's mind. When will she feel she has experienced enough to say she was done with this abusive man? Keep in mind, this is a survivor story. So, no matter how bad it gets, it is good to know she will eventually get out. Content Warning & Disclaimer Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised. Tricia Gray grew up as one of four children in Louisiana, raised by a single mother who was trapped in a cycle of abusive relationships. At just five years old, Tricia became her mother's protector, shielding her through years of violence until into her late teens. Then tragedy struck: her mother was murdered in their own front yard by one of her abusers. Left to save herself, Tricia faced unimaginable pain and adversity. Yet from those darkest days, she forged an extraordinary path of resilience, mental strength, and spiritual growth. Her story is a powerful testament to human endurance and the ability to rise above trauma. In July 2026, Tricia Gray will release her highly anticipated memoir, "The Lotus Legacy". The book details her journey from childhood protector to empowered survivor, sharing the mindset, strategies, and inner work that helped her rebuild her life. In an exclusive interview, Tricia opens up about how she approached life's challenges and the deeply personal process of writing "The Lotus Legacy." Her story resonates with anyone seeking inspiration to overcome hardship, break generational cycles, and create a meaningful legacy. If Tricia could transform such profound trauma into strength and purpose with so few advantages, it challenges the rest of us to examine our own excuses. Her memoir isn't just a survival story — it's a blueprint for anyone ready to stop waiting for perfect conditions and start building a better life. Tricia's website is TriciaNGray.com. Keywords & Themes: childhood trauma survivor, overcoming domestic abuse, single parent family struggles, Louisiana true story, healing from childhood trauma, women's empowerment memoir, resilience stories 2026. We decided to rerelease this story because it gathered so much attention when it first ran. This is part two of a two-part story with Anna Astwood. Anna is a survivor of teen dating violence. It happened about 25 years ago, but she has lived with it every day since. As a survivor herself of sexual assault and teenage dating violence from the ages of 12 to 18 years old, she knows the pain, the trauma, the guilt of what relationship violence brings. Most importantly, she knows the healing that can take place after trauma. Although not an easy task, Anna explains that by taking the steps to heal and being willing to be vulnerable and authentic with what she has experienced, will bring back the power and peace that was stolen from her many years ago. Listen for warning signs in her story. See how not feeling you can go to your friends or family only makes everything worse. Anna suffered emotional and physical abuse. She had to figure out, on her own, what to do about it: How to cope. How to live. Listen carefully, feel the experience, and learn from this true story from Anna Astwood on the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast. The "Love Doesn't Hurt" Mission Statement: Love Doesn't Hurt is a nonprofit dedicated to ending teenage dating violence and supporting those affected through education, empowerment and community support. Content Warning & Disclaimer Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised. Anne offered to tell her story to us. An army veteran, Anne found herself falling for Peter, who was also an army vet. They had a lot in common, so striking up a relationship was very easy. There are many facets about Peter that were appealing, but when he became angry about something, he turned into a whole different person. Not only in his behavior, but also the look on his face, in particular, his eyes. He promised he would not allow himself to become that angry again. But he was not able to do that. Although a very strong person in many ways, Anne made the mistake of allowing Peter into (and taking control of) her life. This took time to happen, but later had the appearance of an overall plan. There were many unfortunate decisions made by Anne, but they were attempts at making Peter more comfortable and increasing his self esteem. We ask ourselves how could a smart woman like Anne allow this to happen, but she was a good person who was trying hard to lift Peter up in life. He took full advantage of her good acts. Like with each of our survivor stories, there are many lessons to be learned from hearing Anne's story. If you're in an abusive relationship, dealing with trauma from childhood, or supporting someone who is, this episode offers validation, insight, and hope. Content Warning & Disclaimer This true story contains detailed accounts of emotional abuse, psychological abuse, and a near-fatal poisoning. It includes descriptions of prescription drug misuse. Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse, trauma, or those struggling with suicidal thoughts. Listener discretion is strongly advised. We decided to bring one of our early survivor stories back for you. It is a story of a man being abused by a woman. From Psychology Today: Abused men often don't tell their stories due to a combination of deep seated, social stigma, internalize expectations around masculinity, practical fears, and systemic barriers. The silence isn't unique to men – abuse victims of any gender face shame and fear – but the dynamics hit male victims particularly hard because of cultural norms that frame men as inherently strong, self-reliant protectors, who cannot or should not be victims – especially at the hands of a female partner. J.D. McCabe maintained a living relationship with his wife for nearly 20 years before their marriage, family, and world begin to crumble. Their foundation had always been rooted in trust. That trust is the bedrock of a healthy relationship. His wife always claimed things wouldn't, couldn't work without trust. But one day, for reasons, J.D. could not fathom, his wife became suspicious of his every move. She enlisted her mother in her efforts, and together they forged the words of family, trust, and honesty into a hammer that beat him into the ground. Their accusations accumulated and eventually it resulted in J.D. being involuntarily hospitalized. This is an unusual story of abuse. And one of the few brought to this podcast where it's a man being abused by a woman. There are plenty more of these stories, however, men are reticent to come forth and speak. But J.D. does in this episode of WHEN DATING HURTS. Content Warning & Disclaimer This true story contains detailed accounts of emotional abuse, psychological abuse, and narcissistic abuse that began in childhood and continued into adulthood. It includes descriptions of prescription drug misuse, recreational drug abuse, failed suicide attempts, and completed suicides. Please proceed with caution. This episode may be highly triggering for survivors of abuse, trauma, or those struggling with suicidal thoughts. Listener discretion is strongly advised. Throughout the interview, you'll hear the term DARVO — a common manipulation tactic used by abusers. DARVO stands for: Deny Attack Reverse Victim and Offender It occurs when the abuser flips the script, making the victim believe they are the problem and positioning themselves as the victim. This powerful form of gaslighting is explained clearly during Riel's powerful testimony. When I sat down with Riel, I thought I understood the broad strokes of her story. What unfolded was far more shocking and complex than I anticipated. The layers of betrayal — not just from her long-term partner, but also from her own mother — were deeply disturbing and completely unexpected. Riel survived 20 years in a toxic, chaotic relationship that should never have begun. Her story is a sobering reminder of how narcissistic abuse and childhood trauma can trap someone in a destructive cycle for decades. Stories like Riel's highlight critical warning signs of narcissistic abuse and emotional manipulation. Recognizing these red flags early can help you or someone you love avoid years of pain and escape the “conveyor belt of chaos” that toxic relationships often become. If you're in an abusive relationship, dealing with trauma from childhood, or supporting someone who is, this episode offers validation, insight, and hope. Host: Bill Mitchell If you're experiencing intimate partner abuse, coercive control, or narcissistic abuse—or if you suspect someone you care about is—Riel's story offers critical perspective on spotting red flags early, breaking free, and finding support. We conducted this interview a few years ago. We decided to bring it back now. It is a valuable discussion on how law enforcement can be helpful years after horrible crimes have taken place. This is worth an investment of your time. J R Waltemyer is a valuable contact at the Office of Victim Advocate (OVA) in Pennsylvania. OVA is the state agency with the authority and duty to advocate for the rights and needs of crime victims. OVA accomplishes their mission through victim services, which includes post-sentencing notifications of offender status and movements within the Department of Corrections and the parole system; restorative justice programs that promote resilience and healing; and they are currently developing new initiatives around crime prevention. OVA envisions a Pennsylvania in which justice thrives. They collaborate closely with fellow state agencies and community groups to develop and promote trauma informed programs. You will find this episode useful if you want to know how the system works to help all survivors of violent crimes. For a long time, I have wanted to share some chapters from my WHEN DATING HURTS book with you. I am happy to have this for you now. This is part two of a two lengthy episodes. In this case, lengthy means I am sharing a lot... The WHEN DATING HURTS book is a memoir about my daughter Kristin's murder in 2005 due to dating violence. Reviews describe it as having short, gripping chapters that mix raw family story with lessons learned. It's more narrative than structured—think chronological heartbreak plus practical takeaways. If you're interested in this book (that can save lives), find it on Amazon in audiobook, paperback, and e-book. People mostly call it "heartbreaking—like, gut-punch level sad—because it's a dad's raw account of losing his daughter Kristin to dating violence back in 2005". Readers say it hits hard emotionally, leaves them in tears, but also feels eye-opening and urgent. They love how Bill mixes the family's grief with real talk on red flags—like controlling stuff or jealousy—that everyone misses until it's too late. On Amazon it's sitting at 4.9 stars from over a hundred reviews; folks write things like "this book will save lives" or "it stole my heart and educated me." Goodreads averages around 4.5, with people urging parents, teens, even teachers to read it—phrases like "must-read for every parent" or "I feel like I knew Kristin" pop up a lot. And, "It's not just sorrow; it's inspiring too". Readers admire the Mitchells turning pain into advocacy, saying it empowers you to spot abuse early and speak up. They say, "Super recommended if you're into true stories that double as wake-up calls." I hope you read my book. I wrote it for you even though we have never met. We cannot bring back Kristin, but she would want you to live a long life and be happy. Thank you for your attention to the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast. Most of the episodes in this podcast are populated with survivors telling their stories. But there are many more survivors who are not prepared to be interviewed and have their full stories heard around the entire world. For this very special episode, we asked survivors to either record or email us stories. The recorded stories include the actual voice of survivors. If survivors emailed us their stories, we used computer-generated voices to tell their stories for them. If you want to tell your story on WHEN DATING HURTS but do not want to be interviewed, either record and send us your narrative to us–or write your story as an email, and we will take it from there. Survivors need to know they are not alone. Your stories are precious because they bring comfort to others, and they influence victims to seek help in recovering their freedom. Thank you for listening to WHEN DATING HURTS. Trigger Warning / Content Disclaimer This raw, true survivor story contains explicit details of heavy drug use, narcissistic abuse, physical violence, and attempted murder. Listener discretion is strongly advised. In this powerful episode of When Dating Hurts, we interview Abe, now 20 years old. Before diving in, we strongly recommend listening to episodes 310 and 311 where Abe's mother, Heather, shares her own harrowing story of serial narcissistic abuse, near-fatal domestic violence, and survival at the hands of her ex-husband Rick. Abe was also repeatedly emotionally and physically abused by Rick during those years. Abe bravely opens up about his experience starting at age seven and lasting until he was thirteen. He paints a vivid picture of daily abuse in a home where a child feels powerless — and reveals how his own actions played a key role in helping his mother survive. Heather and Rick were both deep in active addiction throughout this nightmare. While many assume drugs caused the abuse, Heather has always been clear: drugs do not cause narcissistic abuse or domestic violence — they make it far more dangerous and deadly. This episode drives that truth home through a child's eyes. In this episode you'll hear: • What it's really like growing up with narcissistic parents and early childhood trauma • A string of emotionally and physically abusive acts from a violent stepfather • How a young boy became an unlikely hero in his mother's fight to survive attempted murder • The brutal reality of drug addiction combined with intimate partner violence • A child's perspective on living in constant fear with no escape It is nothing short of a miracle that both Heather and Abe are alive today. If you or someone you love is trapped in narcissistic abuse, domestic violence, toxic relationships, or addiction-fueled trauma, this story delivers raw hope, validation, and proof that recovery and freedom are possible. Perfect for anyone searching: • Narcissistic abuse recovery stories • Domestic violence survivor interviews • Child survivors of narcissistic abuse • Escaping abusive relationships with children • Healing from narcissistic parents • Drug addiction and intimate partner violence • Real stories of surviving attempted murder
