1300. Rebuilding Life After Loss: Bob Saget's Widow Kelly Rizzo on How to Move Forward + Find Love Again

Heal Squad x Maria Menounos

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 24, 2026 48:50

Hey, Heal Squad! Kelly Rizzo is back today, and her story about the night her late husband, comedian and Full House icon Bob Saget, passed away continues. If you've ever lost someone you love, or you're trying to support someone who has, this conversation can help understand grief, trauma, and transformation on a deeper level. Kelly shares what happened the night Bob passed away unexpectedly, the phone calls that followed, the moment she received the news, and the surreal reality of waking up the next day in a world that no longer looked the same. She opens up about the small details she still remembers, the severe sore throat she was battling that suddenly disappeared, and the overwhelming realization: "This is my life now."But this conversation isn't just about loss. It's about what happened to Kelly's world after. She talks about the incredible support she received from Bob's family, the Full House cast, and the comedy community, as well as the perspective that completely changed the way she views grief. Rather than focusing on what was taken from her, Kelly shares why she chooses to focus on what she was lucky enough to have. We also get into something so many people are afraid to talk about: what happens when life keeps moving. How do you walk into his closet when he's no longer there? And how do you give yourself permission to love again? Kelly opens up about dating after loss, her relationship with Breckin Meyer, and the realization that helped her make room for both grief and happiness in the same life.Whether you're grieving a spouse, a parent, a friend, or simply navigating a season of profound change, this episode is filled with wisdom, hope, and the reminder that you're not alone.  HEALERS & HEAL LINERS Grief Changes You—But It Doesn't Have To Define You: Kelly shares that the hardest part wasn't just losing Bob—it was figuring out who she was afterward. Grief may become part of your story, but it doesn't have to become your entire identity. Focus On What Was Given, Not Just What Was Taken: One of the most powerful lessons Kelly learned after Bob's passing was that perspective matters. When we can shift our focus from what we lost to what we were lucky enough to have, healing becomes possible. Love Doesn't End When Someone Is Gone: Kelly's journey reminds us that moving forward doesn't mean leaving someone behind. Love can exist in memory, in gratitude, and even alongside new chapters we never thought we'd have the courage to begin. We decided to rerelease this story because it gathered so much attention when it first ran. This is part one of a two-part story with Anna Astwood. Anna is a survivor of teen dating violence. It happened about 25 years ago, but she has lived with it every day since. As a survivor herself of sexual assault and teenage dating violence from the ages of 12 to 18 years old, she knows the pain, the trauma, the guilt of what relationship violence brings. Most importantly, she knows the healing that can take place after trauma. Although not an easy task, Anna explains that by taking the steps to heal and being willing to be vulnerable and authentic with what she has experienced, will bring back the power and peace that was stolen from her many years ago. Listen for warning signs in her story. See how not feeling you can go to your friends or family only makes everything worse. Anna suffered emotional and physical abuse. She had to figure out, on her own, what to do about it: How to cope. How to live. Most of us aren't stuck. We're cluttered. That's one of the first things Diana Firth said in this conversation. Diana is an Intuitive Guide, Author, and Speaker, and one of my closest friends for over 25 years. She's also one of the clearest, most grounded people I know when it comes to helping people cut through the noise and actually hear themselves again. In this episode of the Game On Girlfriend® podcast, I sit down with Diana to talk about spiritual simplicity — what it really means, what spiritual clutter actually looks and feels like, and why the feeling of being stuck is almost never what it looks like on the surface. One thing worth noting before you press play: Diana recorded this conversation in the middle of her own grief, having recently lost her father. The grace and clarity she brings to this conversation, from inside that loss, are something I hope everyone gets to witness. It's a living example of something she teaches — that our emotions are here to guide us, even the hard ones. If things have felt loud, heavy, or like you can't quite hear yourself right now — this episode is going to help.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN  Why feeling stuck is almost always a clutter problem, not a you problem What spiritual simplicity is — and what spiritual clutter actually looks and feels like in real life How to train your mind to come back to the present moment without overhauling your entire life Why your purpose and your job don't have to be the same thing — and why that matters What opened up for Diana the moment she let go of the fear of judgment How working with your emotions instead of storing them changes what's available to you   SPECIAL GIFT FROM DIANA FIRTH Diana is offering a single-session intuitive guidance experience at a special introductory rate for the first six months of this year. Rabbi Manis Friedman joins the show for a profound and soul-stirring conversation on the true essence of relationships, love, and spirituality in a disconnected world. From challenging the popular myth of unconditional love to exposing why a lack of exclusivity is destroying modern intimacy, the Rabbi breaks down why today's society is trapped in a shallow pursuit of fleeting feelings instead of unbreakable bonds. Friedman also dives into the use of substances for consciousness expansion, the importance of reclaiming sacred respect within marriage, and how to distinguish between artificial religion and a raw, authentic connection with the Creator. Watch until the end to understand why giving from your true essence is the only way to heal the existential void and how to stop being a 'consumer' of people to become someone capable of genuine devotion. Don't let the noise of the modern world cloud your purpose; learn to elevate your perspective and find true peace through the wisdom of the eternal.

What do you do when faith says “love wins,” but real life says “the mortgage is due”? In this episode, Joe Rockey challenges a common tension: love can't be deposited in a bank account—so how is “the way of love” actually practical? Father Boniface Hicks responds by reframing the claim: love may not show up on a ledger, but it animates the person who can show up, endure, work, persevere, and make hard choices with integrity. Without love, we “die before we die”—we quit internally long before life collapses externally. From there, Father widens the lens: love empowers courage (sometimes even “superhuman” resolve), sustains hope when outcomes are uncertain, and becomes the only thing that can go into death and beyond—everything else passes away. The martyrs become the ultimate witness: the final decision is whether we compromise truth, betray love, or “risk it with Christ.” Joe brings it back to everyday life: we prepare for that final decision by the daily ones—small choices that either build relationships or erode them. Because when lives implode, the common thread is often a broken relationship. Love is the track that keeps relationships alive—and relationships are what make a life worth living.Key IdeasLove doesn't pay bills directly, but it generates hope, courage, identity, and agency—the inner fuel that enables everything responsible adults must do.Love can empower extraordinary sacrifice and strength, while still honoring ordinary limits.Everything else fades—money, power, pleasure, reputation—love alone remains, even into death and beyond.Martyrs (“witnesses”) model the ultimate test: will I betray truth/love to preserve comfort, or stand with Christ? The “final decision” is trained by daily ones: choose love in small moments, or you won't choose it in the last one.Everyday application: relationships strengthen through small choices—listening, serving, and preferring the beloved's good.Links & References (official/source only)None explicitly referenced with clear official/source URLs in this transcript.CTA: If this helped, please leave a review or share this episode with a friend.Questions or thoughts? Hey everyone... This episode is a stream of consciousness check in following my 36th birthday. I talk about the moving goalpost that makes it feel like I never arrive. How I'm living inside the dream I had 15 years ago but it doesn't feel the way I thought it would. Learning to turn off my threat detector and find peace here and now. Accessing flow states vs. ego states. The guilt I feel for being happy in today's world. The kind of environment I want to raise my daughter in. And what A Course in Miracles says about war.  If you want to read my diary, this might be my rawest entry yet. Hope you enjoy it.

Why is our nature to only love people who treat us well? Why do we feel the need to get even when we are hurt? And what does it say about our faith if we refuse to love our enemies? Because Jesus makes it clear–this isn’t optional, it is the clearest evidence that our lives have truly been changed by him. From Matthew 5

Many of us grow up assuming marriage is simply the next step in life. But what happens when that story doesn't unfold the way we expected? In this episode, we explore the quiet disappointment many people carry regarding relationship status: whether that's longing to be married, navigating singleness, divorce, dating later in life than expected, or feeling lonely within a marriage. We also talk about how cultural and church messages around marriage can intensify this grief. When something is framed as inevitable, not experiencing it can feel like falling behind or missing something essential. Using insights from attachment research, we explore why relational disappointment can feel so personal and painful, and how to separate grief from shame. In this episode we explore: 1. Why relationship disappointment runs so deep 2. How cultural and church messages shape expectations around marriage 3. Attachment and the human need for connection 4. Hold longing without tying it to your worth

How do you navigate a world that feels empty after a 38-year conversation ends? In this episode of Everyone Dies, we dive into the "radical honesty" of actor Richard E. Grant as he navigates the profound grief of losing his wife, Joan Washington. We explore why he rejects the idea that "time heals" and instead advocates for an unfiltered, open approach to bereavement. We also tackle the complex realities of spousal loss through a listener's story of grieving a partner lost twice—first to addiction and finally to illness. From the unexpected relief that can follow years of chronic caregiving stress, to the heartwarming story of NFL players are joining the ranks of the most trusted profession, this episode is a safe space for the raw, honest, and often unspoken truths about death and dying.   https://bit.ly/4sWAJrlWhat You'll Learn in This Episode:The Most Trusted Profession: Why nurses have topped Gallup's honesty and ethics poll for 24 consecutive years and how former NFL stars are now joining the ranks.Richard E. Tired of the Valentine's Day script that swings between pressure and apathy? We take a deeper path, rooting marriage in the wide, long, high, and deep love described in Ephesians 3—and showing how that truth can turn a single holiday into a daily habit of generosity. Through honest stories of winter weariness and unmet expectations, we uncover how remembering God's faithfulness shifts love from performance to overflow, and how grace breaks perfectionism's grip so you can act with courage, even on hard days.We walk through Romans 5 to rediscover what it means to be loved when least deserving and how that transforms the way we treat our spouse when they are least deserving too. Then we bring theology to the kitchen table: practical, specific ways to study your spouse, create meaningful time, offer reassurance, rekindle physical affection, and plan thoughtful moments that reflect their unique needs. We also lean into spiritual intimacy—simple rhythms of prayer, Scripture, and community that strengthen connection and build hope that doesn't disappoint.Expect a clear mindset shift: love is gift, not transaction. Anchored in Galatians 2:20 and Luke 6:38, we explore why giving often leads to deeper joy and how God equips you right now with everything needed to love generously. If you're ready to trade the card aisle for a life of intentional care, this conversation will help you start today. Send Sherry a Text MessageLove doesn't start with a person—and it definitely doesn't start on Valentine's Day.This episode of It's a Single Mom Thing is not about dating advice, relationship status, or pressure to be “okay” with where you are. It's about your heart—and where it's been drawing love from.Whether you're dating, healing, resting, hopeful, guarded, or choosing peace right now, this conversation meets you where you are without trying to move you anywhere. We talk about why people make terrible sources, why your heart may feel tired instead of broken, and what shifts when love stops being something you look for and starts being something you live from.Rooted in faith and honest reflection, this episode reframes love away from being chosen, pursued, or claimed—and back to its true source. Because when love has a steady source, everything else stops carrying the weight of your worth. No sappy clichés. No Valentine's Day pressure. Just a freeing reminder that you're not waiting for love to begin—it already has.Support the showIt's a Single Mom Thing, Not the Single Thing That Stops You!

Send us a textWe were told that love never fails. But what happens when you loved deeply and still lost the relationship? In this honest and unflinching message, Pastor Dan Minor confronts one of the most damaging ideas many of us inherited in faith spaces: that if love is real, it will fix everything. Drawing from Scripture, lived experience, and hard-earned wisdom, Dan reframes what “love never fails” actually means and what it doesn't.This episode challenges the belief that:Leaving means you didn't try hard enoughBoundaries mean unforgivenessWalking away means love failedInstead, Dan offers a different vision of love, one rooted in truth, integrity, and wholeness. A love that doesn't demand denial. A love that doesn't require self-erasure. A love that may not save every relationship, but refuses to destroy the person offering it.If you've ever stayed too long, gone quiet to keep the peace, or believed that suffering was proof of faithfulness, this conversation may help you finally exhale.Because love doesn't fail when a relationship ends.Love fails when we lose ourselves trying to save it.#HarvestSarasota#PastorDanMinor#LoveAndTruth#HealthyFaith#FaithAndRelationships#ChurchHurt#ReligiousTrauma#FaithJourney#HealingFaith#BoundariesAreHealthy#SpiritualHealing#Unlearning Harvest is a fully affirming, inclusive (including the LGBTQ+ community) progressive Christian church located in Sarasota, Florida.Follow us on Social Media:Instagram - Instagram.com/harvestsarasotaFacebook - Facebook.com/harvestsarasotaTikTok CLICK HEREDONATE to support our podcast HERERecorded live at Harvest Church in Sarasota by Michael Thomas Regina and Stephen Lehman of Boardtown Creative

One of the fastest ways intimacy erodes in marriage is through assumption. We assume our spouse knows what we need.We assume they understand how we feel.We assume love means they should just “get it.”But marriage doesn't work on mind-reading as we have talked about before, it works on communication. When we assume things, we stop asking questions. And when we stop asking questions, we stop truly knowing our spouse. Over time, those assumptions turn into unmet expectations, and unmet expectations almost always lead to frustration, resentment, or emotional distance.Dr. John Gottman, one of the leading marriage researchers, talks about “bids for connection” the small moments where one spouse reaches out for attention, affection, or understanding. When those bids are ignored, often because of assumptions, couples slowly drift apart. Assumptions also damage sexual intimacy. When one spouse assumes rejection, disinterest, or “now's not a good time,” desire goes unspoken. Silence replaces vulnerability. And eventually, intimacy feels awkward or distant, not because love is gone, but because communication is.In this episode, Nick and Amy talk about how making assumptions or assuming things in marriage can crate a lot of disconnect and conflict.Healthy marriages don't assume. They ask. They clarify. They check in.They choose conversation over silence.Because love isn't proven by how well you guess, it's proven by how well you listen. If you haven't already, go check out the Ultimate Intimacy App in the app stores, or at ultimateintimacy.com to find "Ultimate Intimacy" in your marriage.
