In another disturbing case of women's safety being not at all a priority, a man in Minneapolis turned images of some 80 women he sort-of-but-not-really-knew into graphic p*rn. When his WIFE found out, he fled town with his laptop in hand, probably to infiltrate a new town with his predator ways. Police threw their hands up and said, "Uh, we don't know what you want us to do. Is this illegal?" Turns out, it is and it isn't. One of the victims talks to Toxic about how she's using her law background to help make sure future women get the justice they deserve against gross men who can't literally make everything in the world about getting off. Every survivor story comes with reasons to listen carefully and learn the many facets of dating and domestic violence. This story is certainly no exception. For those of you thinking domestic violence doesn't happen to people like you, Jamie's narrative stands as evidence to the contrary. She was a college graduate. A law school graduate. And then a prosecutor in a district attorney's office near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. What is so ironic? She was the prosecutor of criminal cases oftentimes like what she was experiencing within her personal life at that time. And yet, she was not thinking of her difficulties as abuse. When she realized she was technically a domestic violence victim, she felt guilt and shame for not coming forth and taking the kinds of legal steps against her abuser she would have urged her clients to take.Jamie wants to underscore dating and domestic violence can—and does—happen to anyone in any profession. This is what finally helped her turn the corner on her shame. This interview is her way to reach out to the world and use her story to help shine the light of knowledge about abuse. This is part one of two parts with Amanda. This interview comes with all the trigger warnings.Amanda lives in Australia, but her story could have taken place anywhere in the world. The treatment Amanda and her twin sister (named J.J.) received as babies continued into their teen years. It is shocking, disturbing, inhumane, and, frankly, impossible to comprehend. But it is true, nonetheless. This is Domestic Violence at its ugliest. The redeeming facet about Amanda's story is how it never managed to break her. Her generous spirit can be witnessed here. She somehow was able to find a way to live through it all and took a heroic path in life. This is Amanda's story.NOTE: If you want to share your story of abuse on the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast, email me: BillMitchell@WhenDatingHurts.comThank you for listening to our podcast, Bill MitchellWhenDatingHurts.com- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Thanks to my wonderful sponsors. This is part two of three parts with Sabrina. She met him in her freshman year of college. He was a senior. Was it love at first sight? Maybe for her. Not for him. Jake had other ideas. This story is meant for parents with daughters in, or soon entering, college. It should be a time when they begin to take off in life and learn to find their way. But it be a time when they display their innocence and are easy prey for predators.Sabrina was a trusting young woman who put her life in the hands of a man who knew how to manipulate her until she had no power at all. The more she gave the more he took.We ask ourselves how these kinds of toxic/dangerous relationships take hold. We ask why a smart person doesn't just pick up and leave. This story will explain this from the POV of someone who still cannot understand how she had this happen to her. This is Sabrina's story. This is part one of a two-part story.Taylor is a 39-year-old survivor from northern New York. She is two years with no contact from her emotionally abusive ex-partner. The only way she was able to escape was by educating herself about these types of individuals, and she thinks it's important to reinforce the gut feelings that most of us feel when we first get involved.Taylor felt sorry for her ex-partner and let her empathy overpower her intuition. She has learned much since leaving this man and truly feels like she is a completely different person now.She has boundaries, self-love, and self-respect once again. She says, “Leaving was the hardest thing I have ever done, and I truly feel that if I did not leave correctly I would have been murdered.” The final straw was when he used intimidation as well as stalking. He showed who he truly was at the end, but she also showed him who she truly was by never giving in.Taylor: “I'm so incredibly grateful for podcasts like yours. It's two years later and I still think of him daily. These types of people are imbedded into our psyches. The knowledge (WHEN DATING HURTS) passes along is invaluable and definitely keeps me headed in the only safe direction which is far away from him. Thank you so very much.” Listen to Taylor's story and watch as the warning signs are made present—and how she disregards them. This is another cautionary tale that offers us insights into how dating and domestic violence sneaks in and take innocent people over.NOTE:If you want to share your story of abuse on the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast, email me: BillMitchell@WhenDatingHurts.comThank you for listening to our podcast, Bill Mitchell WhenDatingHurts.com- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Thanks to my wonderful sponsors. My three-part interview with Annie reveals a smart, innocent, creative, and fragile young woman giving her best to find a sustainable life for herself. Her desire to share her successes and failures is on full display here. Annie takes us back to her childhood days moving from Wisconsin to Texas to Alaska and back to Wisconsin. Her father's Air Force career makes the transfers necessary. Her biggest move was after college when she looked for work in Brooklyn, New York.Making friends was difficult, and loneliness was a constant. Her introspection allows an extraordinary view into the thought process of a woman working through a maze she thinks she created for herself.Annie describes intimate relationships that launch with hope, but in every instance, something gets in the way. The relationships which became abusive are where she shows us what she didn't know, and here is where we can gain the most learning.Annie's desire was to inform our audience about what can be going on in the mind of a person who doesn't get the kinds of help she needed from childhood to adulthood. She was left to fend for herself.Annie is another courageous survivor who knows sharing a personal story can inform—and often free—another innocent victim or survivor.NOTE: If you want to share your story of abuse on the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast, email me: BillMitchell@WhenDatingHurts.comThank you for listening to our podcast, Bill Mitchell WhenDatingHurts.com- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Thanks to my wonderful sponsors. This is part one of a two-part narrative. Let me say upfront that I totally admire this woman! This is a cautionary tale for parents and children. There is much to be learned as Cherice Bloom tells of years of abusive behavior while dating and being married to Cody (not his real name).Growing up, early family life offered little comfort. Cherice's father's job took him away from home most of the time. Her mother was schizophrenic, which created shocking upheavals for young Cherice. Still in her teens, she was forced to flee her own home. During that time, she met a slightly older boy who swept her off her feet. She admits she was naïve and innocent, but he was not. Even in the earliest stages of dating, you will hear how unhealthy behavior crept in.Cherice was not aware that the warning signs she experienced would lead to all kinds of trouble. So, she stayed with Cody. Cherice Bloom overcame many hurdles placed in her path. You will learn how her journey made her strong. You will benefit greatly from hearing her tell it all for your benefit.NOTE:If you want to share your story of abuse on theWHEN DATING HURTS Podcast, email me: BillMitchell@WhenDatingHurts.comThank you for listening to our podcast,Bill MitchellWebsite: WhenDatingHurts.comContent/Trigger Warnings: domestic abuse, domestic violence, alcoholism, and graphic violence.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -Thanks to my wonderful sponsors. If you purchase one of these products, a portion of the sale helps to keep this podcast running.BlendJet• Use my special link: zen.ai/WhenDatingHurts12 to SAVE 12% at blendjet.com.The discount will be applied at checkout!Cure HydrationTry Cure today and feel the difference for yourself!• Use my link: https://zen.ai/WhenDatingHurts1for 20% OFF your order, coupon activated at check out!Nom NomTry Nom Nom today, go to trynom.com/whendatinghurtsand GET 50% OFF your first order plus FREE shipping.
This is part two of a two-part narrative. The voice you hear on this WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast episode was created by artificial intelligence. It is not a real person's voice. The words spoken are a composite of beliefs and concepts expressed by dating and domestic abusers found within notes and interviews. They have been collected over nearly two decades. They have been combined to form complete ideas and thoughts. The purpose of this episode is to illustrate how abusers often portray themselves as the victims. There is not one "portrait" that fits all abusers, of course. But let it be said that many never take ownership of their words or actions, and they justify any abusive and destructive behaviors. This is part one of two parts with Alexandra. Her story follows along the path of many dating abuse victims. There were ample warning signs presented, but she didn't recognize them for what they were. And she stayed on a path that could have been her destruction. Taylor took advantage of Alexandra with every opportunity he created. When listening to this episode of the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast, see how many red flags you can spot. It is good practice so you never fall prey to the various ways Taylor manipulated and compromised Alexandra. The relationship lasted only nine months, but for someone who is a victim, it can feel many times that. This is part two, the final episode of JaNae's story. . JaNae was studying to become a nurse. Tony was studying to be a doctor. To all who knew them, this looked like the perfect marriage of two smart professionals. Their parents were happy and proud of them. Nobody expected what was really happening in their “perfect world”.At home, when Tony couldn't get his way or felt like dispensing some abuse, JaNae was bore the brunt of it. But she felt married for life and tried to get them to peace and maybe counseling.Nothing seemed like it was working. As time wore on, Tony described the pressure he was feeling in school. It made his time sharing in household duties negligible. His way of dealing with the stress was to play video games all evening and into the morning hours. JaNae carried the entire load of housework, and that's while attending to her het own demanding studies. This story has several twists I never saw coming. I surmise you will feel the same way when you hear this two-part story.Bill Mitchell WhenDatingHurts.comZencastr An Attractive Offer for You: Hey, if you're a podcast host, here's some advice for you: Use my special link zen.ai/whendatinghurtsand use "whendatinghurts" to save 30% off your first three months of Zencastr professional.I want you to have the same experiences I do for all my podcasting and content needs. This is part two of a two-part true dating abuse/violence story with Olivia Engstrom.Olivia was stretched to the limit by a man who swept her off her feet from the start. Never before had she felt so good about a guy—or about herself—as she did when dating him. That was his insidious scheme to capture her and keep her.At times, Olivia's story will take your breath away. You will hear how this man speeded up every step of the dating process, so she felt she needed to either comply or lose him. Bonus episode This is my story. The third one, to be precise. I decided to read a story from my book, Why I Survived, by Jennifer Lee. It was published in February 2023. "Never apologize to anyone for trusting your gut" ~ Jennifer Lee During a break, a man approached me and asked about my podcast. “I'm a survivor of armed robbery and abduction and started my podcast to create a place where survivors of life events can share their stories. I focus on uncomfortable topics—domestic violence, human trafficking, fentanyl, the foster care system, etc. I partner with local, national, and international organizations providing trauma survivors resources. In addition, I put a spotlight on the unique traumas our first responders face,” I replied. I asked him the same question. As he spoke, I was listening to him, but I was also observing him. “I interview people who . . .” His words were being drowned out as I developed a feeling that something wasn't right. My instincts were alerting me to pay attention. He finished speaking and asked if he could take our picture. “Sure,” I said. We exchanged business cards and headed off in our directions, the something- isn't-right feeling lingering after he walked away. Saturday morning Matt and I walked the conference center halls, burning off some calories from breakfast. We passed Creepy Guy as he headed in the opposite direction. At this point, I walked past him with my head down, not wanting to acknowledge his presence. “He watched you the whole time as he passed us,” Matt told me. This is part one of two. It's a story you can relate to — and learn from. See how innocently this relationship began. Everything seemed perfect. It looked like it had a long future. What took place later could happen to anyone. Amy fits many of the characteristics of an abuse victim. She is affable, generous, optimistic, loyal and forgiving. Quite the opposite from the man she met online, thought she loved, and lived with along with her young daughter.Like many women, Amy met a guy she quickly fell for. Brian perfectly met her checklist of the kind of a man she was hoping to find. But he was well-practiced in deception: knowing how to bring her along and portray himself as an engaging partner. When he had her where he wanted her, the real Brian emerged. And her world turned upside down.Amy's story of abuse gives insights into how someone can get trapped by a calculating abuser. See how a woman can come to doubt her own reality. Amy considers herself fortunate to get out alive. Mikkel Becker joined with me months ago for her interview. Since then, I am happy to say she and I have kept in touch. She asked if there was anything she could do for the WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast. Mikkel offered to record her thoughts looking back upon two marriages she had with husbands who turned out to be abusers. What she created is a stream of thinking I hope you agree is priceless in its honesty and its generosity for relaying powerful insights that can keep you or someone you care about safe. What you will hear is worth sharing with your dating-age child, a friend, a co-worker—or anyone who needs to hear this. Part one of Meagan's story of abuse, takes her from Canada to New Zealand to Australia. Along the way, she meets a man she thinks is just the one she needed at just the right time. Her narrative soon becomes an inexplicable story of serial mistreatment. Like many accounts of abuse told on this podcast, Meagan's story left me speechless many times. How such an agreeable, young, smart woman could become captured by one man's vicious web of abuse remains beyond anyone's comprehension. Hear this narrative and hope you never meet up with someone like Max: a man so devious, so thoroughly awful. Max found ways to keep an inescapable grip on Meagan time and time again. Often, we ask ourselves why (how) anyone would go back to their abuser. But there is more to these tangled relationships than we know. There is a pull there most of us have never felt. This episode helps us gain understanding. Max appeared to be just what Meagan needed to make her feel complete. But he came to represent a serial abuser who made her life a complete nightmare. Things start out slowly. But hang on. This is going to become unbearable. Part two of Meagan's story of abuse picks up immediately after she escaped certain death had she fallen from her fourteenth-floor apartment balcony. Her fall would have been precipitated by her boyfriend, Max. She is not sure what o do about this abuser/boyfriend. Is he an unfortunate victim of himself, or a serial abuser bent on making her life a living Hell?Meagan is presented with a few chances to leave Max. But she wonders if a few facets of their relationship can be turned around, maybe it can become what she thought in the early days. In this WHEN DATING HURTS episode, there are times when Meagan chooses to remain with Max over finding her own freedom. It's a vicious cycle many victims find themselves stuck in. She isn't sure whether to go to the police, call a domestic violence agency, or return home to endure further emotional and physical abuse from this man. One morning, when Max was determining whether to kill her or let her live, it was time for her to decide her own fate. This episode points out examples of abuse like "love bombing', "gaslighting", and more classic techniques worked to perfection by today's abusers. Be sure to listen to the end. My guest, Kaytee Gillis, is a psychotherapist, author, and consultant working with survivors of traumatic relationships—whether familial or romantic. She is also a domestic abuse survivor herself. She will talk about this. Her recent book, Invisible Bruises: How a Better Understanding of the Patterns of Domestic Violence Can Help Survivors Navigate the Legal System, sheds light on the ways that the legal system can perpetuate the cycle of domestic violence by failing to recognize patterns that would otherwise hold perpetrators accountable and protect survivors.Kaytee has been featured on iheart radio, the Dr. Wendy Walsh Show, CP24 News out of Toronto, Newsweek, Shaye Ganam's radio show, and numerous articles online including Psychology Today, Psychotherapy Networker, Choosing Therapy, The Mind Journal, The Good Men Project, and many more. She provides training on recognizing patterns of domestic violence and family trauma, and helping survivors move forward.Bill Mitchell WhenDatingHurts.comAn Attractive Offer for You: Hey, if you're a podcast host, here's some advice for you: Use my special link zen.ai/whendatinghurts and use "whendatinghurts" to save 30% off your first three months of Zencastr professional.I want you to have the same experiences I do for all my podcasting and content needs. Bianca contacted me wanting to share a situation her daughter, Gracie, experienced in high school. It was not in any way a romantic relationship, but had all the markings of an unhealthy relationship with Liz, another high school student.Gracie was lured into this abusive relationship during the high water days of Covid, when students needed to stay at home. So, getting access to school friends was limited. Time spent with Liz made it possible for her to manipulate Gracie until it became what could be termed “classic abuse”.This WHEN DATING HURTS Podcast episode demonstrates how students at the ninth and tenth grade levels can be taken advantage of if they are not introduced to the warning signs of unhealthy relationships. It is often within these relationships our young gain experience with how words and actions affect others.Gracie learned a tough lesson—as did her parents. This is part two of an astonishing account by Melissa Byers, who lives in Florida.Melissa has always been a trusting soul. Today, she is a true survivor. She was the victim, several times, of the insidious methods predators use to lure innocent people into relationships and then slam an emotional door shut on them.Today's serial abusers are crafty individuals. They practice their techniques and learn what makes them attractive and then how to turn the screws. When they get a target in their sights, they don't stop until a successful capture is made. Melissa only saw the good in these men she married. Men who took complete advantage of her.It would be tempting to believe this would never happen to one of us, but when you hear Melissa's story, you might think differently. This is her survivor's story, so you know it will have a positive ending. But the path to Melissa's freedom came with life-threatening perils.
