California held its primary election a week ago and we still don't have a governor or a Los Angeles mayor. Here's why — and why none of it is as simple as either side is telling you. This week Phil and Camille break down everything happening with California's election system in real time. How does counting actually work in the largest voting state in the country, and why does it take so long? What are "ballot dumps" — and are they actually suspicious? What does documented voter fraud in California really look like? And what could genuinely fix a system that produced 23% turnout after mailing a ballot to every single registered voter? They also cover the two races still being decided as this episode airs: the governor's race, where Xavier Becerra and Steve Hilton have now been projected to advance — and the story of how Becerra went from 3% polling in March to first place; and the LA Mayor's race, where Spencer Pratt held a 40,000-vote lead on election night and watched it disappear over six days as Nithya Raman overtook him to face Karen Bass in November.Plus: the viral claim that Pratt received zero votes in a 24,000-ballot dump — debunked by Trump's own Justice Department. The Voter ID proposition headed to your November ballot. And the live Supreme Court case that could change how California counts votes before November even arrives. No spin. No team. If you've ever understood exactly why you do something, and then did it anyway (again), then this episode is for you.I spent nearly 2 decades doing genuine, deep, inner work. Therapy, somatic practices, learning, even helping clients. I could name every wound, explain every pattern, and still spent years trying to 'get out of my own way'. Feeling at odds with different parts of myself. So, let's dive deep about the paradox of being a deeply self-aware person who still self-sabotages. Why awareness alone isn't the mechanism of change. What's actually happening in your nervous system while you're busy being frustrated that nothing is changing. And what I finally learned was 'the thing' that moves the needle.

Today, we're diving into something I've been sitting with deeply, and it's this: you look successful, but you feel trapped. And here's what's actually happening inside. From the outside, your life looks like it's working. Great title, solid income, the kind of stability other people point to as the goal. But on the inside, there's a restlessness you can't shake. A low-level dread on Sunday nights. A moment in a meeting where you think, I don't actually want to be in this room anymore. Maybe you're scrolling LinkedIn watching other women seem to have figured it out, and you realise with a jolt that you said "I can't keep doing this for two more years" two years ago.The loneliest part? You can't really talk about it. Who complains about a good salary and a stable job? So you keep quiet, keep performing, and hope a different perspective in the morning will make the feeling go away. This episode is about what's actually happening beneath that feeling of being "trapped", because it's not what you think.I'm sharing the three layers I see showing up again and again with the women I work with: the very real mismatch between who you've become and the career container you're still inside; how your identity has fused with your role in ways that make any change feel like genuine danger to your nervous system; and the embodied beliefs that keep you frozen even when your heart knows it's time to move. I also give you a personal update on where I've been for the past month, training in body-mind maturation coaching, and why this work is changing how I understand everything I do with my clients.I also share three things I want you to take away from this episode: you are not broken, you are not confused, and you do not have to choose between security and change. There is a third path, and this episode is about helping you find your footing on it.As part of my body-mind maturation coaching training, I have a small number of free practice sessions available. If you're curious about what this work feels like from the inside, I'd love to offer you a taster. Metabolism gets oversimplified all the time. Eat less, move more. That's the whole conversation. For a lot of people, that's where medical gaslighting begins. In this solo episode, I wanted to slow down and actually explain what metabolism is: your body's system for managing energy. Not a measure of effort or discipline, actually a biological process influenced by multiple factors at once. I walk through four of the most important ones: food quality, insulin signaling, the microbiome, and mitochondrial function. I also get into why the "calories in, calories out" model doesn't account for how differently your body processes various foods, and why nutrigenomics, the study of how food communicates with your genes, changes the way we should be thinking about nutrition entirely. We also talk about Akkermansia, a gut bacterium that's showing up more and more in metabolism research, and the role of polyphenol-rich foods in supporting it. The episode closes with a practical checklist you can actually use: healthy fats, eating a wide variety of colorful plants, reducing refined sugar and flour, incorporating intentional movement, targeted nutrients, and consistent sleep. The goal of this conversation is less blame, more clarity. Fewer generalizations that leave people feeling stuck or at fault for something that has a real biological explanation. The Truth About Cheat Meal: How It Triggers Binge Mechanism

Fall in Love with Fitness

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 30, 2026 20:18

In this episode, I want to take you deeper into something that so many people experience but rarely understand:What really happens when a “cheat meal” turns into something much bigger.Because what starts as one planned moment of freedom…often becomes a cycle of urgency, overconsumption, guilt, and starting over. And here's the truth:It's not about willpower. It's about your nervous system.1. The Weight of the Word “Cheat”I want you to pause and really feel into this phrase:“Cheat meal.”That word alone carries judgment. It creates polarity — good vs bad.So now food isn't just food…it becomes emotional.“I cheated.”“I messed up.”“I broke the rules.”And that starts to shape your entire relationship with eating.2. When One Meal Becomes a “Session”I've been there myself. What I thought was a structured “cheat meal” often turned into what I now call a:“Cheat meal gone bad” moment.Where:One meal becomes hoursYou're eating past fullnessYou feel out of controlAnd there's one thought driving it all:“I have to do this now… because I won't be able to later.”That's not hunger. That's scarcity.3. The Real Trigger: Scarcity & “Now or Never” ThinkingAnytime you hear yourself thinking:“I'll start again Monday”“I'm not allowed to have this tomorrow”“This is my only chance”You've created artificial scarcity. And your body responds as if it's real.4. What's Actually Happening in Your BodyWhen you restrict food — calories, carbs, fats, or entire food groups —your body shifts into what I call protection mode. This is your survival system. And it does two key things:Slows down your metabolismActivates a natural binge mechanismBecause biologically, your body is preparing for famine. So that moment where you feel out of control? That's not failure. That's a survival response.5. The Cycle That Keeps You StuckHere's the pattern I lived in for years:Restriction → Craving → Binge → Guilt → Restriction againAnd the longer you stay in this cycle:The stronger the cravings becomeThe more disconnected you feelThe harder it becomes to trust yourself6. The Shift That Changes EverythingThe goal is not to control food. The goal is to shift your body out of:Protection modeand into:Safety modeBecause when your body feels safe:Cravings calm downUrgency disappearsYou feel grounded around food7. Appetite Correction — Relearning Your Body's SignalsOnce you regulate your nervous system, the next step is:Appetite correction. This is where you begin to:Reconnect with hunger cuesRecognize when you've had enoughUnderstand what your body actually needsBecause after years of dieting…You're not eating from intuition. You're eating from rules.8. What Your Body Truly WantsHere's the truth most people don't realize:Your body doesn't actually crave chaos. When you feel safe:You don't want to overeatYou don't feel urgencyYou don't feel pulled toward extremesYour body starts asking for:Real foodNourishmentBalanceStruggling with emotional or binge eating? We Will Not Be Aging Quietly: Claiming Your Most Powerful Season with Katie Fogarty Description: What if the years everyone warned you about turned out to be the ones you'd been waiting for? Today, Jen and Amy sit down with Katie Fogarty—a former journalist, career coach, and the voice behind one of the most vibrant midlife podcasts in the country, called A Certain Age—for an honest, energizing hour about what it really means to thrive in this season. Katie launched A Certain Age thirty-five days before her 51st birthday with one mission: blow up the narrative that women become less relevant as they get older. Five years and 230-plus episodes later, she's interviewed hundreds of midlife women—and she has thoughts. Big ones. They dig into the myths about midlife that refuse to die, why Katie calls this season an "accelerant" rather than an obstacle, what it looks like when women stop waiting for permission and start claiming their lives—and what she's hearing that gives her real hope for the women coming behind us. If you've ever felt like midlife was quietly trying to make you smaller—this episode is your push back. Thought-provoking Quotes: “Sometimes the word ‘reinventing' implies we're completely changing our lives and getting rid of everything that came before. It's more about reimagining, because we're drawing on all of our expertise to apply it in new ways, big and small.” – Katie Fogarty “Midlife is that moment where you say, let me get going. The kids are grown, the career maybe is established, life is sort of on track, moving forward, and we have this moment with space in our brain, maybe on our calendar, to actually hit go on whatever it is we've been thinking about for so long.” – Katie Fogarty “If you are feeling disconnected from relationships, or like you're not being supported, find people that you are visible to. There are communities of people out there who care about what you care about, who want to see you, who will see you.” – Katie Fogarty Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Jen's first colonoscopy - https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWz8nTvgo6p/ Sophie Grégoire Trudeau on Life, Emotional Regulation and Midlife Reinventions - https://www.acertainagepod.com/shows/sophie-grgoire-trudeau-on-life-emotional-regulation-and-midlife-reinventions Tamsen Fadal - https://www.tamsenfadal.com/ Grown Woman Talk: Your Guide to Getting and Staying Healthy by Dr. Sharon Malone - https://amzn.to/4t14kQY The New Perimenopause: What's Actually Happening to Your Body with Dr. Mary Claire Haver - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-64/the-new-perimenopause-whats-actually-happening-to-your-body-with-dr-mary-claire-haver/ When Life Happens: The Mindset Shift You Need to Manage Stress, Build Confidence, and Break Free by Dr. Rachel Goldman - https://amzn.to/4mnvZsY Midlife Private Parts: Revealing Essays That Will Change the Way You Think About Age - https://www.midlifeprivateparts.com/ The Midlife Book Club - https://www.themidlifebookclub.com/about Jen Hatmaker Book Club - https://shop.jenhatmaker.com/collections/book-club Sandwich by Catherine Newman - https://amzn.to/3QauFNM Same As It Ever Was by Claire Lombardo - https://amzn.to/4mkK8XI The Grand Paloma Resort: A Novel by Cleyvis Natera - https://amzn.to/4meEQNi The Secret Book Society by Madeline Martin - https://amzn.to/47MkGnX Guest's Links: Website - https://www.acertainagepod.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/acertainagepod/ Podcast - https://www.acertainagepod.com/episodes Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. Fertility Is a Health Marker: The Bigger Picture of Hormones and Women's Health with Dr. Natalie Crawford

For The Love With Jen Hatmaker Podcast

Description:This week, Jen and Amy sit down with double board-certified OB-GYN and reproductive endocrinologist Dr. Natalie Crawford, author of The Fertility Formula, for a wide-ranging conversation about hormones, inflammation, stress, and the powerful (and often misunderstood) signals our bodies are constantly sending. While Dr. Crawford's work is rooted in fertility, this episode zooms out to something much bigger: how hormone health reflects our overall well-being — and why midlife is often the moment when the body stops whispering and starts speaking clearly. But this conversation isn't just for women trying to get pregnant. It's for women in perimenopause and menopause wondering what their bodies are doing now — and why. Because fertility is more than reproduction; it's a health marker. The same patterns that shape our fertility years — inflammation, hormone signaling, metabolic health, stress — also influence how we experience menopause, what symptoms show up, and what kinds of support our bodies will need. And it's also for women stepping into the grandparent years — who want to better understand what their daughters, daughters-in-law, and younger women in their lives are navigating. Because the more we understand our own bodies, the more compassion and clarity we bring to the next generation. Together, they unpack: Why your menstrual cycle (even in its changes) is one of your most important health indicators Natalie's experience with pregnancy loss and how it shaped her approach to women's health The effects of societal and political shifts on women's reproductive choices How cycle awareness can support both fertility outcomes and menopause transitions Whether or not you are thinking about fertility — or are long past that season — this conversation reframes it as something more expansive: a reflection of vitality, resilience, and how supported your body truly feels across every stage of life. Thought-provoking Quotes: “We're living in a different era now, luckily, where women are demanding more knowledge about their bodies.” – Dr. Natalie Crawford “I think that my own experience reframed how I educate my patients and the public in taking charge and learning how to listen to your body and believe it. What are those little red flags—whether it's my cycle, whether it's symptoms, whether it's fatigue, and how do I get answers or try to modify those so that I can have more control over what is happening to me?” – Dr. Natalie Crawford “Anybody who's trying to sell you a quick fix, especially if it comes in a bottle, is most likely not in your best interest. That doesn't mean there aren't medications or supplements that can help, but that comes after you've done what you can do.” – Dr. Natalie Crawford Resources Mentioned in This Episode: The Fertility Formula: Take Control of Your Reproductive Future by Dr. Natalie Crawford – https://amzn.to/47HZ1NR The New Perimenopause: What's Actually Happening to Your Body with Dr. Mary Claire Haver - https://jenhatmaker.com/podcasts/series-64/the-new-perimenopause-whats-actually-happening-to-your-body-with-dr-mary-claire-haver/ Fora Fertility Clinic– https://www.forafertility.com/ Guest's Links: Website - https://www.nataliecrawfordmd.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nataliecrawfordmd/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/nataliecrawfordmd/ Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/c/NatalieCrawfordMD/videos TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@nataliecrawfordmd Substack - https://substack.com/@nataliecrawfordmd Podcast - https://www.nataliecrawfordmd.com/podcast Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. Let us know what you think about the podcast!Episode 212: When Your Adult Child's Spouse is Controlling, Critical, or Cold - This is What's Actually HappeningAnxiety doesn't always look like worry and stress. In families, it will often look like controlling, critical, or cold behavior. If you've been following this series, you've heard me talk about anxiety moving through the family system — rippling outward, affecting everyone it touches. But a lot of you have written to tell me the same thing: the person you're dealing with doesn't look anxious. They look difficult. They look controlling. They look like they're just choosing to make things hard.  This episode is the answer to that question. Before we go any further in this series, I want to give you the framework that everything else is built on — because once you understand what anxiety actually looks like in a family system, the behavior that's been confusing you will start to make a different kind of sense. Not excused. Not ignored. Just understood. And that changes how you respond.5 things you'll learn in this episodeWhy "anxiety" in a family system rarely looks like worry or nervousness — and what it actually looks like in the real behaviors you're experiencing every dayThe difference between acute and chronic anxiety, and why chronic anxiety creates a tension that never quite goes away — even when nothing dramatic is happeningThe three channels anxiety travels through in a family system — and how to recognize which ones are operating in your family right nowThe five most common disguises anxiety wears in a difficult spouse: control, hypersensitivity, withdrawal, reassurance-seeking, and criticism — and the nervous system logic behind each oneWhat the "identified patient" concept means, and how shifting from "who is causing this?" to "how do I change my part in this?" is the move that makes everything else possibleDo you now another parent who's been trying to make sense of a family situation that just doesn't add up? Send them this episode. Sometimes the right framework is all it takes to go from absorbing the confusion to finally seeing the pattern — and that clarity is worth sharing.  Tina Gosney is the Family Conflict Coach. What's Actually Happening Tonight? | Christ For YouEaster Vigil | John 20:1 and Matthew 28:1–7Why does this service feel so strange? Why does everything feel so mixed up, so out of order, so full of both grief and joy at the same time? Why do we sing “Alleluia, Christ is risen” while the church is still dark, the tomb still seems sealed, and death still looks so real? And if Christ has already won, why does life still feel so broken? Why do prayers seem unanswered, suffering seem pointless, and graves still open for the people we love?In this Easter Vigil sermon, Pastor Rojas explores the deep strangeness of this holy night and why that strangeness teaches Christians how to live. On the surface, everything around Jesus' death and burial looked like failure. The disciples fled. His enemies rejoiced. His body lay cold in the tomb. But underneath, the exact opposite was true. The angels rejoiced. The demons trembled. The Father was well pleased. And Christ was not defeated in death, but proclaiming His victory. Why does this night feel so different? Because it teaches you how to live by faith when your eyes give you the wrong story. This sermon is for those who look at their sin and wonder how they could possibly be forgiven. It is for those who look at the chaos of the world and think the devil is winning. It is for those who stand at graves, carry unanswered prayers, and wonder why everything still hurts if Christ has already changed everything. This sermon proclaims the answer with clarity and comfort: the victory is real before it is visible. Christ is risen. And because He is risen, your sins are forgiven, Satan is defeated, death is doomed, and what is now hidden will not stay hidden forever. Description:For years, women in their late 30s and 40s have walked into doctors' offices saying the same thing: “I don't feel like myself.” They're exhausted but can't sleep. Gaining weight but eating less. Anxious, foggy, irritable, disconnected. And too often, they're told it's stress. Aging. Depression. Just part of being a woman. But what if it's something else? This week, Jen and Amy sit down with board-certified OB-GYN and menopause expert Dr. Mary Claire Haver to talk about what's really happening in perimenopause — the hormonal transition that can begin years before your final period and affect nearly every system in your body. Drawing from her new book The New Perimenopause, Dr. Haver explains: Why the brain may be the first organ to notice hormone shifts Why antidepressants are often prescribed before hormones are even discussed The dangerous legacy of outdated research and underfunded women's health How bone density, cholesterol, muscle mass, mood, libido, and cognition are all connected And why midlife is not a decline — but a powerful window of opportunity This is not just a conversation about hot flashes. It's about the “Zone of Chaos.” It's about medical gaslighting. It's about reclaiming your body as your ally, not your enemy. If you've ever whispered, “What is wrong with me?” or spent your sleepless nights up Googling dramatic questions like “is my brain broken?” — this episode is for you. You're not broken. You're not weak. And you are definitely not alone. Thought-provoking Quotes: “We got some bad f*cking advice…Power through! You built this life. You asked for this. Oh, and also be thin, and make yourself smaller, and don't take up space, and make sure you put everyone in your family before your needs. That's the only way you're gonna be rewarded, elevated, celebrated is on this altar of self-sacrifice. You know what that did for my mother and my grandmother? Dementia and sarcopenia. I'm saying we're going to take a different path.” – Dr. Mary Claire Haver  “Men build rockets. Women build healthcare systems.” – Dr. Mary Claire Haver  “One of the good things about menopause is that women lose their give-a-shit filter.” – Dr. Mary Claire Haver “I just want menopause to be taken half as seriously as erectile dysfunction.” – Dr. Mary Claire Haver Resources Mentioned in This Episode: The New Perimenopause: An Evidence-Based Guide to Surviving the Zone of Chaos and Feeling Like Yourself Again by Dr. Mary Claire Haver – https://www.amazon.com/New-Perimenopause-Evidence-Based-Surviving-Yourself/dp/0593736613/ The New Menopause: Navigating Your Path Through Hormonal Change with Purpose, Power, and Facts by Dr. Mary Claire Haver - https://amzn.to/4aUtrx3 The Blue Lagoon film (1980) – https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080453/ Menopause.org The International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH) - https://www.isswsh.org/ The Pause Life - https://thepauselife.com/ MidiHealth - https://www.joinmidi.com/ Guest's Links: Website - https://thepauselife.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/drmaryclaire Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/drmaryclaire Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@drmaryclaire TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@drmaryclaire Substack - https://drmaryclairehaver.substack.com/ Podcast - https://thepauselife.com/blogs/the-unpaused-podcast Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. You got off the call feeling great. The conversation flowed, they seemed interested, and you said — "I'll send over a proposal." And then you spent the next two hours writing it, the next two days waiting for a response, and the next two weeks following up. Sound familiar? If you are a coach, consultant, brand designer, VA, marketing agency owner, or any kind of service provider who is sending proposals to get business, this episode is your wake-up call. Proposals are not the professional, polished move you think they are. For most service providers, they are quietly killing your close rate, draining your time, and handing control of your sale over to a document that can't answer questions, handle objections, or guide anyone to a decision. In this episode, Jamila breaks down exactly why proposals are working against you and makes the case for package pricing, the shift that speeds up your sales cycle, puts you back in the driver's seat of every sales conversation, and helps you close clients in one call instead of one month. Key Topics Discussed The hidden cost of proposals that most service providers never stop to calculate Why your sales process might be the reason deals are stalling — not your pricing The simple pricing shift that helps entrepreneurs close clients in one conversation A real client story that will make you rethink how you're currently selling The quick audit that tells you exactly where your sales process is breaking down Key Takeaways Proposals hand control of your sale to a document. When you send a proposal and get off the phone, you remove yourself from the most important part of the process — the moment your client is deciding. You can't answer questions, address hesitation, or guide them. The proposal has to do all of that alone. And it can't. Package pricing closes clients faster. When your offers are defined in advance and you walk clients through them on the call, the decision happens in real time. No waiting. No follow-up. No guessing. Two packages is a great place to start. Package A and Package B. Define your deliverables clearly, know the differentiators between each tier, and put it somewhere you can pull up on a sales call. That's it. Your business is not too custom for packages. Your expertise doesn't change client to client — only the context does. Packages exist to give clients a range to find where they fit within what you offer. That's not less personal. That's smart design. Confidence in your offers is part of the sale. Arriving at a sales conversation with clear, defined packages sends a message: I know what I do, I know what it's worth, and here's what it looks like to work with me. That energy closes clients. In this episode, I break down how to improve your client experience and how that supports smarter decisions and sustainable small business growth. We all want our business systems and customer journeys to run smoother, but most of us don't stop to map out what's really going on. I'm walking you through why it matters to see the gaps between what you think should happen and what your clients are actually experiencing. Those small friction points aren't just annoying, they can quietly cost you time and erode trust with your clients and customers. You'll get simple steps for mapping out your real customer journey and identifying exactly where things break down. I'll share how I've streamlined my own processes, plus the low-hanging fruit you can automate today using website strategy and smart tools. And because I don't believe in massive overhauls or random changes, I'll help you decide what to fix first for the biggest impact with the least effort. If you want a client experience that builds trust (and maybe frees you from those repetitive emails), this episode is for you.01:34 - Why you need to map out your real client journey (not the idealized version)03:54 - Three common gaps eroding client trust and how to spot them05:53 -  Real-life example: Catching and fixing communication breakdowns09:52 - Simple automation wins for smoother customer experiences11:53 - How to prioritize what to fix first in your client processLinks & Resources:KitThrive CartContent SnareMakeWatch this episode on YouTube.Follow me on Instagram @kristendoyle.co Let's talk about your website and systems: Book a Website Gameplan Call Explore your options for working together: Web Design Services Rate & review Small Business Savvy on Apple PodcastsShow Notes: https://kristendoyle.co/episode182 Send us a text!
