The fourth in our podcast's regular series of "deep dives" into books that, for whatever reason, have the popularity, subject matter or complexity to justify an extended discussion. This time we tackle one of the more popular novels in the past several decades, a book that has struck a nerve with a great many American readers in particular, and was loudly championed by none other than Mr. Stephen King: John Irving's 1989 bestseller 'A Prayer for Owen Meany.' It's a book that certainly manages to cram quite a lot into its hefty 600-page length, and certainly has its admirers as well as its detractors. On which side will your twin hosts ultimately find themselves in this debate; how did the diminutive, prophetic titular character strike them; and what are some of the enduring merits and/or flaws of this widely read novel? Episode 34 leaves no stone unturned to try and wring some meaning out of the enigmatic seventh novel by Mr. Irving, previously best known for titles such as 'The World According to Garp' and 'The Cider House Rules.' BOOKS DISCUSSED/MENTIONED/RECOMMENDED IN THIS EPISODE What Jude is currently reading/plans to read next: 'The Reason for the Darkness of the Night: Edgar Allan Poe and the Forging of American Science,' John Tresch - 'The Abstainer,' Ian McGuire - What John is currently reading/plans to read next: 'The Book of Margery Kempe,' Margery Kempe - 'Time O'Clock,' Foster Mullins - Books/Writers discussed in this episode: 'A Prayer for Owen Meany' by John Irving Planned next episode of the Book XChange podcast: "Go Big or Go Home" - in our next discussion we will talk about "big books" - books that aren't afraid to go to great lengths (literally) to entertain, inform and risk possibly infuriating their readers. Why do some books decide to "go big," is it true that weighty tomes aren't quite as popular now as they once used to be, and of course... what are some of our favorites, and why?

We are finally engaging in actually reading our own work of art.  My Ebook "The Power of Choice" was introduced in our last episode with the opening song of that episode given to us by India Arie titled 'A Prayer for Humanity".  This episode begins with audio song titled "One Song" by Prince.  "One Song" begins with a verbal monologue from Prince speaking to us about the current conditioning of the world before he breaks out into song.  His words are worthy of your listening, but the song is about a translation of the "WORD" ...UNIVERSE!!! From our last episode, we spoke of how we really want the world to be because my deepest desire is that "We" all "LOVE" each other MORE!!! This is my greatest desire. With this as my thought, I have decided to personally read aloud my ebook titled "The Power Of Choice/Path of Divine Royalty to Conquer Darkness".  I really gave thought to what that really looks like, so I decided to read the message as the message, with words and feeling and my personal expository as we good deep into what the "Spirit of Truth" has revealed to me to share with you all.

William Jay said of prayer: “Prayer is the design of trouble, the evidence that it is sanctified, its solace, and the medium of deliverance from it.” Observations on prayer such as this stem from contemplation of passages like Psalm 86 which incidentally is titled: 'A Prayer of David'. This is the only Psalm of its type in book 3 of the Psalter. If Psalm 86 was the meditative source of William Jay's quote on prayer, one might wonder if such a passage moved David to write his song. Exodus 34:5-7 would appear to be such a text – the meditative source of Psalm 86. The historical occasion for David's prayer could have been any number of trials he encountered throughout his storied, often troubled, life. One example serving to illustrate the usefulness of Psalm 86 could be the kidnapping of his family and the families of his men at Ziklag (I Sam 30:1-6).

Hello and welcome to the Baha’i Blogcast with me your host, Rainn Wilson. In this series of podcasts I interview members of the Baha’i Faith and friends from all over the world about their hearts, and minds, and souls, their spiritual journeys, what they’re interested in, and what makes them tick. In this episode I'm in Toronto, Canada interviewing husband and wife Mary Darling and Clark Donnelly. Besides having more kids than I can ever keep track of, they have their own media company called WestWind Pictures, which aims to promote themes of beauty and unity. Among many other things, they are known for their popular TV comedy series called 'Little Mosque on the Prairie', and I ask them how the series started and what sort of impact the show has had. They share the challenges of working on a comedy that deals with things that are sacred, and how they bring Baha'i principles into the creative process. We discuss the importance of consultation, what it's like working as a husband and wife team, the role of a producer, and how they each became Baha'is. They also share what books they're reading, what they personally strive to be better at, and their favorite Baha'i Writings. O my God! Thou seest me in my lowliness and weakness, occupied with the greatest undertaking, determined to raise Thy word among the masses and to spread Thy teachings among Thy peoples. How can I succeed unless Thou assist me with the breath of the Holy Spirit, help me to triumph by the hosts of Thy glorious kingdom, and shower upon me Thy confirmations, which alone can change a gnat into an eagle, a drop of water into rivers and seas, and an atom into lights and suns? O my Lord! Assist me with Thy triumphant and effective might, so that my tongue may utter Thy praises and attributes among all people and my soul overflow with the wine of Thy love and knowledge.
