Esther thought of herself as a reluctant reader until she read John Irving's, The World According to Garp in her teens. From that day on, she discovered that she loves books! These days, she mostly listens to audiobooks. Esther's writing career grew from the stories she told her children. Book after book poured out of her as she began to put the words down on paper. Kääntäjä Aleksi Milonoff sai viime vuonna parhaalle kaunokirjallisuussuomennokselle myönnettävän Mikael Agricola -palkinnon John Irving -suomennoksestaan Vimeinen tuolihissi. Romaanin kääntäjä on yksin vastuussa kaikesta. Miten yhdistää työn analyyttinen, tutkijamainen luonne ja luovaa uskallusta vaativa intuitiivinen prosessi? Keane, brings together fifty varied voices--including some underappreciated ones--and reflects on their cultural, political, literary, and religious influence. His smart, accessible style brings thought leaders into conversation with a Catholic sensibility, opening unexpected insights into our current moment.  Among these fifty figures are John Kennedy Toole, Kirstin Valdez Quade, Dorothy Day, Jon Hassler, Mary Karr, Martin Amis, Toni Morrison, Graham Greene, Shusaku Endo, Andre Dubus III, Iris Murdoch, Colm Tóibín, J.F. Powers, Salman Rushdie, Mary Gordon, Wendell Berry, Thich Nhat Hanh, Sigrid Undset, Alice McDermott, and John Irving.   Reading Culture through Catholic Eyes combines Keane's breadth of knowledge of literary and cultural voices with a deep background in Catholic theology and spirituality. For general readers who appreciate lively and relevant writing, this book is a must-have.

Amateur sleuth Evan Wycliff is a disillusioned divinity student who is fascinated by astrophysics and given up both. He's returned to his small-town farm roots in Southern Missouri. He is also disappointed in love. His beautiful fiancé was a brilliant Jewish scientist, a defense contractor who was killed in a rocket attack in Syria. These days Evan gets guest preacher gigs and uses his investigative skills as skip tracer for the local car and tractor dealership. In this second novel in the series, Evan counsels a boy who is afflicted with schizophrenia and has been accused of rape. Along with related abuses of the child welfare system, he uncovers a teen trafficking ring run out of a luxury casino resort by a Russian oligarch.“This is literature masquerading as a mystery. Carefully yet powerfully, Gerald Jones creates a small, stunning world in a tiny midwestern town, infusing each character with not just life but wit, charm and occasionally menace. Winner of 7 Book Awards in Literary Fiction - Included in the Prize-Winning Literary Fiction Series from LaPuerta Books and MediaIntrigue on the white sands of the Indian Ocean. From the award-winning author of Clifford's Spiral. A lonely widower from Los Angeles buys a tour package to East Africa on the promise of hookups and parties. What he finds instead are new reasons to live. Aldo Barbieri, a slick Italian tour operator, convinces Harry to join a group of adventuresome “voluntourists.” In a resort town on the Indian Ocean, Harry doesn't find the promised excitement with local ladies. But in the supermarket he meets Esther Mwemba, a demure widow who works as a bookkeeper. The attraction is strong and mutual, but Harry gets worried when he finds out that Esther and Aldo have a history. They introduce him to Victor Skebelsky, rumored to be the meanest man in town. Skebelsky has a plan to convert his grand colonial home and residential compound into a rehab center – as a tax dodge. The scheme calls for Harry to head up the charity. He could live like a wealthy diplomat and it won't cost him a shilling! Harry has to come to terms with questions at the heart of his character: Is corruption a fact of life everywhere? Is all love transactional? Harry Harambee's Kenyan Sundowner is an emotional story of expat intrigue in Africa, reminiscent of The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene and The Constant Gardener by John le Carré. Praise for Clifford's Spiral (Independent Press Awards 2020 Distinguished Favorite in Literary Fiction) We've seen and noted the comparison of this author by other reviewers to literary giants like Roth and Vonnegut. And we can't disagree. Yet we feel there may be yet another strata for Gerald Everett Jones, who arguably is doing the best work of his career. We predict that he lacks only a mention in the The New York Review of Books or, better yet, Oprah, to become a nationwide best-selling author. Five-plus stars to Clifford's Spiral, a true literary novel if ever there was one. We say in all seriousness that if you only read one novel this year, this should be it. - Don Sloan, Publishers Daily Reviews Preacher Finds a Corpse (NYC Big Book Awards 2020 Winner in Mystery, IPA 2020 Distinguished Favorite in Mystery, Eric Hoffer 2020 Finalist in Mystery) This is literature masquerading as a mystery. Carefully yet powerfully, Gerald Jones creates a small, stunning world in a tiny midwestern town, infusing each character with not just life but wit, charm, and occasionally menace. This is the kind of writing one expects from John Irving or Jane Smiley. - Marvin J. Wolf, author of the Rabbi Ben Mysteries, including A Scribe Dies in Brooklyn

Owen Meany is a fictional character in John Irving's novel, A Prayer for Owen Meany. If I could give you a one paragraph commentary on I Corinthians 15, it might be this. Here is what he says:I find that Holy Week is draining; no matter how many times I have lived through his crucifixion, my anxiety about his resurrection is undiminished—I am terrified that, this year, it won't happen; that, that year, it didn't. Anyone can be sentimental about the Nativity; any fool can feel like a Christian at Christmas. But Easter is the main event; if you don't believe in the resurrection, you're not a believer. (John Irving, A Prayer for Owen Meany)Paul would like that. In fact, Paul actually hints at that when he says that, by denying the resurrection, perhaps many had believed in vain. Resurrection is the gospel! In our text this week, Paul basically asks those who are doubting the bodily resurrection of Jesus to have the courage of their convictions, and then he outlines a bunch of things that are true if there is no resurrection of the dead. It is terrifying. Terrifying but essential. This Sunday, we will talk about what life and reality look like if Jesus is not raised from the dead. We are so often tempted to think of Christianity only in terms of morality, as we often see parents who have long abandoned the church return, only so that their children can get a moral basis for life. Paul would basically tell you that is really a ridiculous proposition. How so? Join us Sunday and we will talk about it.

Trigger Warning: This book and conversation contain discussions of rape, incest, and abortion.   Happy 2024 everybody! We're excited to start our reading for the new year with Ian's pick, John Irving's: The Cider House Rules. Ian chose this novel partially because he's wanted to read the story for a while and because it's Buffalo's Literary Center's Babel pick for March—the novel centers around a young Homer Wells who is an orphan at Saint Clouds. It deals with many topics such as abortion and morality and is very Dickensian in its voice. At the very least, it's an important piece of literature but spoiler alert, it's more than that.    Check out the podcast, let us know what you think, and read along with us next month when we start Ronnie's pick, The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer. VTDigger is re-releasing some of our favorite interviews of the past decade to mark the 10th anniversary of The Vermont Conversation.John Irving, widely hailed as one of America's greatest novelists, is back, and he has a lot to say.Irving, 81, is the author of 15 novels, including the international bestsellers “The World According to Garp,” “The Cider House Rules” and “A Prayer for Owen Meany,” which is his top-selling book. Irving's latest novel, “The Last Chairlift,” was released Oct. 17. It has been seven years in the making and at 900 pages, it is his longest work. He says that “The Last Chairlift” will be his last long novel.John Irving wrote his first novel at age 26. He competed as a wrestler for 20 years and coached wrestling until he was 47. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Irving has won a National Book Award, an Oscar and a Lambda Literary Award, among numerous other recognitions. His books have been translated into more than 35 languages.John Irving was born in Exeter, New Hampshire. He lived for many years in Vermont, first in Putney and later in Dorset. He sold his Vermont home in 2014 and now lives in Toronto. He is a dual citizen of Canada and the U.S.Irving has long tackled controversial issues in his novels. “The World According to Garp” (1978) has a transgender character, “The Cider House Rules” (1985) deals with abortion and “A Prayer for Owen Meany” (1989) confronts the fallout from the Vietnam War. His books have periodically been banned.“What are they banning? They're banning books about abortion and they're banning books on LGBTQ subjects,” he told The Vermont Conversation. “What they're saying to young, gay, lesbian, trans kids, they want them to feel even more alone and isolated than they already feel. They don't want those kids to have access to material that will let them know they're not alone. They already feel alone. There's a cruelty to that that is unspeakable.”Irving is a sharp critic of American politics today. Speaking about the recent Supreme Court decision striking down abortion rights, he said, “What they did is more in step with the Vatican than it is with the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.”Irving's advice to young writers: “You can't let outside factors get under your skin. You have to stick to your purpose and be a kind of horse with blinders on. … You also can't get down on yourself after somebody's just kicked your tail. You've got to do it again and get better.”

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow follows Sam Masur, Sadie Green, and Marx Watanabe from their time in college, through their collaborative work of creating video games and running a company.

Naopak, tak, ako znie titul slávneho filmu s Barbarou Streisand a Robertom Redfordom: “The way we were”. Lebo, to sme my. Hrdinovia aj zloduchovia. Áno, aj takí sme boli. A možno iba tzv. A ako sme vlastne v tejto konfrontácii so zlom - páchanom neraz nami samotnými, historicky obstáli? A napokon, čo o týchto kapitolách našich vlastných dejín vieme a najmä: Chceme to vôbec vedieť?O našej pamäti, o tom, kým sme boli a z čoho vyrastáme ako i o tom, kde bytostne dejinne koreníme. Pekný deň a pokoj v duši praje Braňo Dobšinský.

It's SHORT TIME SHOTS … a quick look at the day's top wrestling stories. Here's the good stuff for Monday, October 16.-The University of Iowa's women's wrestling team recently opened its doors to Ukrainian wrestlers in need of a training facility. Due to political unrest and inadequate resources in Ukraine, the athletes were struggling to find a suitable place to hone their skills. The collaboration not only provides the Ukrainian team with top-notch training conditions but also offers an invaluable cultural exchange experience for both parties. This initiative underscores the global community's role in supporting athletes irrespective of geopolitical challenges. Read Vanessa Miller's full story at thegazette.com.-The giant women's basketball game and Iowa's entry into the college football Top 25 despite an anemic offense were also newsworthy in Iowa, but so was the return of a literary heavyweight. Acclaimed author and former wrestler John Irving returned to Iowa City to share excerpts from his unpublished novel and reflect on his past. Known not just for his literary contributions but also for his wrestling background, Irving discussed how the discipline and rigor of wrestling influenced his writing career. The event offered attendees a multifaceted view of Irving, blending the worlds of literature and athletics. His visit underscored the enduring impact of Iowa City on both his writing and wrestling journeys. More at the Daily Iowan.-Eliana Bommarito secured her second straight gold medal at the Beach World Series, earning her the prestigious title of UWW Senior Beach World Champion. The event, a significant milestone in the wrestling calendar, showcased her dominating performance over a series of matches. Her back-to-back victory cements her status as a leading figure in the realm of beach wrestling. This latest win adds another high-profile accolade to her already impressive career, solidifying her reputation on the international stage. A Michigan native, she's currently a wrestler at Indian Hills Community College in Iowa. The full recap is available at The Mat dot com-Kyle Klingman from Flo Wrestling had a dynamic interview with one of the top young women in high school wrestling - Minnesota native Gigi Bragg. Klingman dove into topics about Bragg's experiences wrestling in two states, why she represents Michigan in the offseason and her singing of the national anthem at wrestling events nationwide, starting when she was in elementary school. -The Drexel University wrestling team has released its 2023-24 schedule, featuring four tournaments, eight conference duals, and appearances at the EIWA and NCAA Championships. In their conversation, Mark and Terry talk about: Terry's latest novel, A NEW SEASON, and the unique approach he took to his latest book Retiring from his day job as a communications/public affairs consultant in March 2022 Having wanted to write full time since the release of his first novel fifteen years earlier The precarious reality of the earnings an author is most likely to make, even if they are a successful author who regularly hits the bestseller lists in Canada How the novel was derived from fears (something Terry was inspired by John Irving to consider), and from events that unfolded during the pandemic, and the way Terry had to evolve his writing from the usual "bend" of humor he employed in his previous books Casting off the shackles/tyranny of humor Some of the "trademark" self-depracating humor of Terry's narrators (Jack McMaster in this one, Daniel Addison in his first couple of novels) Not being able to believe that he's currently 63 and the experience of writing a narrator (Jack) who is closer to Terry's own age Terry's experiences playing ball hockey every week and how ball hockey can be a bit of a time machine Writing the scenes from trying to speech French when in Paris from personal experience Terry's friendship with Jim Cuddy (of Blue Rodeo fame) via his weekly ball-hockey and how the musician allowed Terry to write him into his novel The examination of make friendship which is an important aspect of this novel Terry's history of being a "closeted" singer-songwriter, which he's been doing since he was seventeen years old The song "More Than The Game" which Terry wrote about the comradarie of his ball hockey league Laying a few of Terry's songs into the audiobook produced by Penguin Random House The 42-year-old love song that Terry wrote for his University girlfriend (who he has been married to for 36 wonderful years) The long-time romantic tradition of Terry singing the love song to his wife on Christmas Eve Terry's personal connection to Paris and how it, like ball hockey, is a kind of time machine Writing a scene of the novel at the seat of Hemmingway's favorite table at a Paris cafe Hailing from the "why use 6 words when 12 will do" school of writing The saga of Constance Stanley's diaries becoming the final piece that Terry needed to complete the story How the title A NEW SEASON refers to so many different elements from the novel The next book that Terry has already started to work on, which has even more intrigue and suspense than two of his previous novels Advice Terry would have for writers who have long wanted to do it, but haven't yet taken that step And more...   After the interview, Mark reflects on the idea of writing books from passion and intense interest. THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO by Taylor Jenkins Reid /  THE HOTEL NEW HAMPSHIRE by John Irving This week, Andrew revisits friend of the podcast (we wish) Taylor Jenkins Reid when he reviews THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO, a twisty journey through imagined old Hollywood scandal. Then, Bailey journeys to the bizarre world of John Irving's HOTEL NEW HAMPSHIRE, thereby crossing paths with not one but two performing bears. We also share our latest shame, plan the books we'll take on vacation, and discover one of Bailey's secret book passions.

MBCer Suzanne told us to use our scientific method on Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus, a book which as of now has spent 38 weeks on the NYTs bestseller list. It looked like a romcom, it smelled like a romcom, and, dear listeners, spoiler alert, it WAS NOT a romcom! Mean Booker Michelle B told us to read the NYT bestseller because “the premise sounds enticing… this totally goes off the rails and was a complete disappointment.” Wrong Place Wrong Time (a misleading title), spent 5 weeks on the bestseller list and was a Reese Witherspoon club pick in 2022. John Irving, one of the world's greatest novelists of all time, joins Zibby (who idolizes him!!) in this once-in-a-lifetime interview to discuss The Last Chairlift, a sweepingly cinematic, multigenerational ghost story about a slalom skier, her accidental pregnancy, and, years later, the son who returns to Aspen to uncover her story. After discussing this latest release, Mr. Irving describes the fascinating process behind each of his iconic books, revealing he has piles of notes waiting to be turned into novels (but refuses to start writing them until he knows exactly how they will end!). He also shares how helpful and influential his first readers (like Kurt Vonnegut!) and editors have been in his career.
