On today's Bible Answer Man broadcast (02/14/25), Hank discusses the origins of Valentine's Day, looking at the Orthodox Church's veneration of Saint Valentine, the Presbyter from Rome, for his martyrdom and as for all its saints, honors St. Valentine as a model of the life in Christ. According to The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church, the traditional association of St. Valentine's Day with courtship is likely connected with certain customs of the pagan festival Lupercalia. If so, this would be another example of Christians usurping a pagan holiday and Christianizing it for the glory of Christ.Hank also answers the following questions:Can you comment on Reza Aslan's book, Zealot, and his claim that there was no census at the time of Jesus' birth? Tom - Kansas City, MO (15:12)How do we understand Matthew 6:15 in light of salvation and the forgiveness we have in Christ? Mark - Wichita, KS (18:35)My wife says you don't need to attend church to be a Christian. Can you address this according to Hebrews 10:25? Ronald - Garland, TX (22:42)
Today I'm publishing an archival episode with Reza Aslan, who called my book Exvangelical & Beyond "[a]n insightful exploration of faith, identity, and activism in a nation at the crossroads of religious fervor and social change…At once alarming and hopeful, this is a book that every American must read, regardless of religious affiliation.” Exvangelical & Beyond is available in stores now! Check out my newsletter, which links to all my recent appearances. In the season 1 finale of Powers & Principalities (originally published on 11/30/2020), I spoke with Reza Aslan about what we've learned about the United States during the Trump administration. In particular, we discussed what it means that 70 million Americans voted for Trump to be re-elected, the cult-like characteristics of Trumpism, the 'geography of identity' of Trumpism, the role of the media, and much more. Reza Aslan is author of several books, including God: A Human History, Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, and Beyond Fundamentalism. He is also Professor of Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside and executive producer of Rough Draft with Reza Aslan and the CNN documentary series, Believer. Georgia's future is hanging in the balance. The former Soviet republic has seen mass protests for weeks, coming to a head today as riot police clashed with pro-European demonstrators after its parliament passed a controversial "foreign agents" bill which critics say mirrors a law in Russia used to crack down on any opposition, dissent, and NGOs. Georgia's president Salome Zourabichvili joins the program from Tbilisi. In this week's show out guest is Raphael, a religious Jew who lives in Israel near the West Bank. As students of history we are looking for answers to the ethical as well as moral concerns about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In the latest episode of the Jimmy Dore Show Dr. Norman Finkelstein displayed many inconsistencies in his approach to the issue. Although, I respect his work I also feel that it is important to hold people accountable for their rhetoric. He justifies Hamas' incursion as a last ditch effort for freedom. However, in 2012 I contacted him and asked him the following questions:1. What do you think would be a national solution for the Palestinian people since they have two territories controlled by two different parties. Is there a three state solution that is possible?2. If the people living in the Palestinian territories have not been able to create a sustainable government in order for them to achieve their aspirations for a nation including seccesion, what is the international community to do to help them become independent?3. What rules of war should be used when the two opposing parties do not agree on any type of conventional norms such as the treatment of captives fairly, not shooting at civilian targets and not using certain weapons which are indiscriminate while hitting targets and the area around them?4. Israeli supporters of the occupation of Gaza and the West Bank claim that the checkpoints are necessary for security. 5. Lately Palestinian writers and supporters have been calling Gaza a ghetto, calling the offence against Gaza worse than the Holocaust and saying that the attacks on civilians are similar to pogroms. Is it really fair to use terms that are painful to the Jewish people to compare current events with Jewish persecution throughout history?6. According to Reza Aslan's dissertation on Muslim Nationalist groups there is a difference between Islamist (Muslim Nationalist groups), Jihadists ( who want global domination) and moderate Muslims who are the majority. Do you feel that Hamas has changed the debate since they would fall under an Islamist framework?7. According to Democracy now, Egypt is also blowing up the tunnels that connect Gaza with the outside. Is there any legitimate concern about weapons being smuggled into Gaza to support militant groups instead of a legitimate military?9. Do you stand against all forms of military wars, both of aggression and defense?10. Do you think Israel is racist and imperialistic like some of the other critics say? Do you differentiate between the hackish current leaders and some racist Ultra-orthodox taking over the political parties in Israel and the population of Israel and other Jews in America? We left conversation there after he shared being unavailable to address these concerns in full. In my opinion people's minds are being poisoned by two conflictive narratives which are neither fully true nor absolute and in a binary world we will never find a common ground if we compare people to nazis, the most hated evil group in human history. Reza Aslan is not just a creative writing professor at the University of California, Riverside. He is also an internationally renowned writer, scholar of religions, an Emmy- and Peabody-nominated producer, and the recipient of the prestigious James Joyce Award.rnrnIn his latest book, An American Martyr in Persia, Reza Aslan traces the extraordinary journey of Howard Baskerville from the halls of Princeton to the middle of a democratic revolution in Persia (modern-day Iran). After graduating from university, Baskerville traveled to Tabriz in 1907 to teach at a missionary school. While there, he became immersed in the lives of his students who were dedicated to fighting for freedom in the Constitutional Revolution of Iran. Baskerville, who died during the Battle of Ghazan, is often remembered as the "American Lafayette of Iran" and an "American martyr" for the country. Using Baskerville's life as a touchpoint, Aslan examines the power and allure of freedom and democracy and how Americans view these ideals outside of their own country.rnrnJoin us at the City Club as we hear from Professor Aslan for the inaugural Siddiq Forum on the Islamic World.

Iranian-American scholar Reza Aslan talks about his article for The Atlantic, "How to Avoid the White Savior Industrial Complex," which tells the story of his childhood hero, missionary Howard Baskerville. Reza argues that the world needs more good, white saviors like Baskerville. Joel wants nothing to do with trying to be a good, white anything in today's political climate. Reza tries to convince him anyway. But it doesn't come without costs - as Reza knows well from having his TV show canceled by CNN due to some controversial comments he made on social media about politics. Reza Aslan is a leading expert in world religions and his bestselling books have touched on a range of issues related to history, extremism and spirituality. His latest work, An American Martyr in Persia, challenges us to look at how seriously we take our ideals of constitutional democracy and whose freedom do we support. Aslan illuminates these issues by exploring the real-story of Howard Baskerville, a 22-year-old Christian missionary from South Dakota who traveled to Persia (modern-day Iran) in 1907 for a two-year stint teaching English and preaching the gospel. Baskerville arrived in the midst of a democratic revolution led by a group of brilliant young firebrands committed to transforming their country into a fully self-determining, constitutional monarchy, one with free elections and an independent parliament. In death, Baskerville became a martyr who spurred the revolutionaries to remove the shah from power, signing a new constitution and rebuilding parliament in Tehran. At this critical time when many people are questioning it, Aslan's new work offers a powerful parable about the universal ideals of democracy―and to what degree Americans are willing to support those ideals in a foreign land, Iran, a country frequently demonized and misunderstood in the West. Aslan along with Ray Suarez will explore how one person can still make a difference when freedom is at stake. NOTES In association with World Affairs. Iran is in upheaval. The death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, in the custody of Iran's “morality police” has sparked an uprising throughout the country. Protesters have turned the current regime's revolutionary iconography against it. Faced with what might be the biggest test to its legitimacy since 1979, the Iranian government has imposed a brutal crackdown on dissent. Countries and human rights organizations around the world condemn the government's violence. In the United States, President Biden has paused nuclear negotiations and expressed his administration's support for the protesters. But there is little consensus on how and whether this support should transform into official U.S. policy. This week on None Of The Above, EGF's Mark Hannah speaks with Assal Rad and Reza Aslan, two experts on Iranian politics and culture. They discuss Iran's history of uprisings and revolutions, the importance of international solidarity, and why Iran's future is ultimately in Iranian hands. The Iranian Islamic regime is currently up against the biggest threat in more than 40 years. Can the coalition of Iranian protesters succeed in bringing down the dictatorship? Mosheh recently spoke to Iran expert and NY Times bestselling author, Reza Aslan, who has a new book out: An American Martyr in Persia. Aslan was born in Iran and his family escaped the rise of the Islamic regime in 1979. We discuss his family history, what led us to the current revolution and what is next. We go through various scenarios on why this revolution might succeed as well as what might cause it to fail. We also discuss his book, which tells the extraordinarily compelling, true story of Howard Baskerville, 22-year old Christian missionary from Nebraska who became a commander in the 1906 Iranian Revolution. Baskerville's story has lessons for the latest revolution, more than a century later. And finally, Aslan talks about the evolution Islam is currently going through and how it compares to how Christianity and Judaism changed over time. – Please remember to subscribe to the podcast and leave us a review. – Mosheh Oinounou (@mosheh) is an Emmy and Murrow award-winning journalist. Reza Aslan believes a 22-year-old Presbyterian missionary from North Dakota offers a spiritual lesson for those losing hope in democratic institutions and liberal values. In a new biography, Aslan introduces the events surrounding the 1906 revolution in Iran that sparked aspirations of self-determination and hope in empires subjected to oppressive and arbitrary leaders.
Reza Aslan doesn't mind being called a pantheist. In his own “roundabout spiritual journey” and study of the world's religions, which has led him to write books on Islam, the life of Jesus Christ, God, and most recently an American martyr in Persia, he has come to believe the Sufi notion that religion is just a shell one must break through to truly understand God—and that if God is anything at all, then all is God. He joined Tyler to discuss Shi'a and Christian notions of martyrdom, the heroism of Howard Baskerville, the differences between Sunni and Shi'a Islam, esoteric vs. exoteric expressions of religion, how mystical movements arise more organically than religion, the conflicts over Imams in the Islamic world, how his upbringing as an Iranian immigrant shaped his view of religion, his roundabout spiritual journey, the synthesis of Spinoza and Sufism, the origins of Wahhabism, the relationship (or lackthereof) between religion and political philosophy, the sad repetition of history in Iran, his favorite Iranian movie, and more.
