As Myanmar ramps up its response to the earthquake that struck last week, those efforts are being complicated by the country's civil war. The military government has been blocking emergency aid from entering areas controlled by armed resistance movements. That's leaving earthquake-stricken areas deprived of doctors, medicine, and bare necessities like food and water. Also, South Korea is reckoning with the dark past of its international adoption system. And, a visit to Africa's only Bahai temple.Listen to today's Music Heard on Air. There is no one right way, no simple formula for how to do it. But it is necessary to keep in mind the concept of contextualization. How cognizant are we of the biblical cultures and times? The cultures and beliefs of those with whom we are sharing the Gospel? Or, the assumptions and biases of our own culture and beliefs? Here on part two of our conversation with author, scholar, and world-religions expert Dr. Win Courduan, we examine some basic premises about contextualization and how Jesus "fits into" other faith traditions. Winfried Courduan (PhD, Rice University) is professor emeritus of philosophy and religion at Taylor University, Upland, Indiana. The answer to the question for us today is no different than it was in the culture of Jesus' day. Our neighbors today include a broad range of people from many different countries who hold to a wide variety of different beliefs and religious traditions. How can we as Christians intelligently engage our non-Christian neighbors of so many different faiths? There is no one simple formula, but there is wisdom and experience of those who have engaged with people of other faith traditions. Our guest this week and next on the Profile is author, scholar, and world-religions expert Dr. Win Corduan, who took the time to share with us some of his invaluable wisdom and insight from decades of traveling the world and engaging people of other religions.Winfried Courduan (PhD, Rice University) is professor emeritus of philosophy and religion at Taylor University, Upland, Indiana. In the Old Testament, God's prophet Daniel saw visions of what would happen throughout history. Those prophecies are being fulfilled in our time. This episode deals with the culmination of the 2300-day prophecy of Daniel 8 and 9. It shows that the same animosity that caused the crucifixion of Christ will be manifested at the end of time. In the corridors of secret societies, and in New Age thinking, there is a movement to destroy those who believe in salvation in Christ and the truth of His Word. This presentation gives evidence for the plans to eradicate those who stand for truth and righteousness, including discussions of the judgment hour message, significant happenings in 1844, the Bahai faith, the theory of evolution, the Georgia Guidestones, and the plans for worldwide population depletion. The invitation put forth at the Interview Suite was:  Let Your Voice be Heard! In total, I interviewed 71 women. I was truly fortunate to sit with women as they spoke so profoundly from their hearts about their faith-in-action toward the Parliament's themes of:  a call to conscience, the support of the human rights and dignity of women, and the care of the next generations of children (which, of course includes care of our earth). This series of interviews gave me a sense of peace and reassurance.  The women are activated, and their love cannot be stopped.  And I believe that you will find, as I did, that listening to women speak from their fierce hearts, empowers us as women to find our own voices and to take action from our hearts as well.   Please return each week for a new interview here.  And please help me share these women by subscribing! With love,DaleSupport the show

204 The  Baha'i Faith [Part 2] with Steve Matthews and James WalkerJesus once asked His disciples who they thought He was. Rightly did Peter confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Such a confession was not revealed to Peter by flesh and blood, but by the Father, as Jesus told Him. There are adherents of the Bahai'i Faith, an offshoot of Shiite Islam that began in 1844, who claim they follow the teachings of Jesus too. There are some 8,000 Baha'i centers of worship in the U.S. and many Americans adhere to the Baha'i faith. But who do the Baha'i say that Jesus is? Is he the same Jesus of the Bible? This week on the Profile we continue our conversation with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews, who continues to unpack the syncretistic and contrary doctrines and practices of the Baha'i faith. Steve Matthews  is a Christian countercult apologist who is not only passionate about researching the more established cults, but also in responding to the newer emerging groups as well. You have probably seen the bumper sticker "COEXIST" made up of several different symbols representing different belief systems and religions. But that bumper sticker is a command, an imperative. The fundamental question about that bumper sticker is "Who is issuing this command?" The Baha'i Faith is no exception to this inclusivism. They attempt to affirm that other religions are valid revelations of God and even ascribe to some of the teachings of Jesus. But this inclusivism is not really inclusive, as the only proper interpretation of the world's religions is given through the ultimate authority of the Baha'i faith, Baha'u'llah, who died in 1892. This week James Walker, the president of Watchman Fellowship, speaks with counter-cult apologist Steve Matthews who gives us an in-depth analysis of the Baha'i faith and why their doctrines of inclusivism and of Jesus are both contradictory and in error. Steve Matthews  is a Christian countercult apologist who is not only passionate about researching the more established cults, but also in responding to the newer emerging groups as well. Four Iranian emigrants talk about their homeland one year after the death of Masha Amini, and Laurent Uhres tells us about the inspiration behind his book. Iran - the situation one year on Masha Amini died on 16 September 2022, aged just 22 years, in the hands of the morality police in Tehran, Iran. Since then, there's been international coverage of the bravery of other women, and men, in the face of the morality police. Mass protests, crackdowns, women defying the defined dress code... things seem to have taken an immovable turn towards personal choice for women. My guests include Vahid Beheshti, an Iranian-born British independent journalist Human Rights Activist, and Director of DorrTV. He went on a 72 day hunger strike camping outside the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to ask the UK government to proscribe the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) an international terrorist organization, now backed by 125 MPs. Shabnam Sabzehi is an Iranian-American activist living in Luxembourg since 2014. Shabnam left Iran aged just 17 and has not been able to return since. After Mahsa Amini's death, Shabnam has been busy amplifying the voices of #WomanLifeFreedom movement. Shabnam is the co-founder of Iranian Diaspora Luxembourg. Nahid Mohammadi worked in the banking sector in Iran for 14 years and talks to us about that experience. She moved to Luxembourg in 2017 to pursue an MSc at the university here. Hooman Eslami brings us the Bahai perspective. His family faced discrimination due to their faith. Bahais are not allowed to study in official universities and so have founded their own, unofficial institution, BIHE University, despite government pressure to shut it down. In 2017, Hooman relocated to Luxembourg to pursue a master's degree, and now PhD at the University of Luxembourg. All of these guests are putting their own life and their families lives at risk in Iran by speaking out. "Creative Convergence" Laurent Uhres is a Luxembourger living in Poland. Throughout his life, Laurent has combined tech knowledge, innovation, education and music in a whole range of careers. This has culminated in his book, Creative Convergence, which delves into the connections between disciplines, demonstrating their interdependence and collective potential for innovation. By examining the fusion of art, science, engineering, and design, the book reveals how interdisciplinary collaboration can lead to remarkable breakthroughs and shape our world. The book presents a rich tapestry of inspiring examples and compelling stories of individuals and teams who have pushed the limits of human knowledge and creativity. The book was inspired by the "Abstract: The Art of Design" episode on Netflix about and with Neri Oxman. Neri introduces "The Krebs Cycle of Creativity," a concept based on the Krebs cycle in biochemistry. Her cycle provides insights into the interplay of science, engineering, design, and art. I am thrilled to share this conversation with Rainn Wilson—Yes, that guy … the actor best known for his role as Dwight Schrute in The Office. In the conversation we talk about his recent book, Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution. Rainn Wilson is a NY Times Bestselling author and three-time Emmy nominated actor best known for his role in NBC's The Office. Besides his many other comedic and dramatic roles on stage and screen, he is the co-founder of the media company SoulPancake and host of the docuseries Rainn Wilson and the Geography of Bliss. Rainn is the author of the New York Times Bestseller Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution, The Bassoon King: My Life in Art, Faith, and Idiocy, as well as the coauthor of SoulPancake: Chew on Life's Big Questions. Some of this you may already know about Rainn, I'm sure, but something you may not know—but will learn from this conversation—is that, in addition to Rainn being a practitioner of the Baha'i faith, he is deeply spiritual, has studied many religions, and has a unique ability to capture the deepest of existential philosophy and social behavior in common cultural references and everyday language. Among many other things, we talked about what spirituality is ... what soul is ... who or what God is or isn't ... Hello and welcome to the Baha'i Blogcast with me your host, Rainn Wilson. In this series of podcasts I interview members of the Baha'i Faith and friends from all over the world about their hearts, and minds, and souls, their spiritual journeys, what they're interested in, and what makes them tick. In this episode we come full circle to where the Baha'i Blogcast all began, with me and Baha'i Blog's co-founder and Blogcast producer, Naysan Naraqi. We're getting back together to wrap up our final episode, marking the end of this iteration of the Baha'i Blogcast as we know it. We're not sure where things will go from here, but it's been an amazing journey with so many fascinating guests and conversations over the last six years! In this episode, we talk about the Baha'i Blogcast, my new book called Soul Boom, and we share a Baha'i quote we've been reflecting on. Join me and Naysan one last time, on this final episode of the Baha'i Blogcast! You can watch a video of this conversation on Baha'i Blog's YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omAvTG4gujU Find out more about some of the things we mentioned and covered below: - Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution can be purchased from book retailers including Amazon: https://amzn.to/45dhE9v - find the whole playlist of Blogcast episodes here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLePDtgwcyKAQmifUJTw0Kk-hBGL2ZGMJi - we mention a couple of episodes specifically such as the one where Michael Penn says "human beings are the most powerful receptors". Baha'i Blog has been working on creating content related to mental health, health, healing and overcoming difficulties: https://www.bahaiblog.net/collection/themes/health-healing-overcoming-difficulties/ - "hope has become a depleted resource" is from a letter dated 25 November 2020 to the Baha'is of the World. This quotation is from Paris Talks. - Naysan also quotes Abdu'l-Baha's Paris Talks: "...all effort and exertion put forth by man from the fullness of his heart is worship, if it is prompted by the highest motives and the will to do service to humanity. This is worship: to serve mankind and to minister to the needs of the people." Teena Purohit's new book Sunni Chauvinism and the Roots of Muslim Modernism (Princeton University Press, 2023) maps how various Muslim modernists from the 19th to the 20th centuries used their Sunni normativity to construct social and political boundaries around conceptions of tawhid or Islamic unity. The book distinctively focuses on how Muslim modernists such as canonical figures like Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, Muhammad ‘Abduh, Rashid Rida and many others, focused on communities such as Shi‘as, Ismailis, Ahmadis, and Bahai's in their activist and intellectual projects that aspired for a singular unified Islam against encroaching western modernity.  For Muslim modernists who were anxious to reclaim a “lost unity” of Islam that existed in the past and believed could be achieved again in the future (though lacking in their time), non-Sunni groups, like Ahmadis for Muhammad Iqbal or esoteric groups for Rashid Rida, became communities that received disparaging attention and intolerant attitudes that led to a particular Sunni chauvinism, Purohit argues. And as such, this obsession with unity (tawhid) and the privileging of Sunnism that went with it was found in all forms of Muslim modernism. This book then invites a rethinking of our conceptualization of Muslim modernism in light of these thinkers approaches to esoteric (i.e., Sufi) and Shi‘a groups who were viewed as problematic for the social and political goal of tawhid. This accessible book will be of interest to those who think and write on Muslim modernism and non-Sunni movements in Islam. It will also be a great teaching resource for undergraduate and graduate classes. Shobhana Xavier is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Queen's University. There were numerous TWL (Today We Learned) moments in today's grid, for instance, 28D, Two-stringed Chinese instrument, EHRU; 26A, Faith that follows the teachings of The BáB, BAHAI; and 32D, Spaces where people pay to destroy household objects with sledgehammers, RAGEROOMS (yikes!).
