Christian and Josh are joined in the Patchwork studio by the handsome and hilarious Nelson Allingham, host of the Read It On Reddit podcast. Christian welcomes Nelson by confessing that he often passively listens to his podcast while completing chores before tragically revealing that he prematurely retired one of his jumpers from rotation by wearing it to bed. Nelson sympathises and offers a compromise of sleeping with no clothes but believes one of the tell tale signs of a sleep top, is the neckline. Josh reflects on waking himself up while sleep talking; Nelson sleep barks.  Christian then opens up to Josh and Nelson about having a fridge full of half filled jars of different sauces, pastes and whatnots. How do you prevent this from happening? Should you use the entire contents of the jar every time a new one is opened, like Nelson and Josh? Or do you wait for the mercy of mould before you throw the jar out? Josh gives us the lowdown on the sharehouse experience while Christian sings the praises of baby food. We then discuss whether particular foods have greater rights over freezer space than others? Bread or salmon? Finally, Nelson offers up a fresh take on how to save space in the fridge - the King's Cup. After a particularly bad experience, Nelson asks Christian and Josh for help identifying the circumstances in which you can ignore a friend of a friend you see walking down the street. Does it matter whether you're having a bad day? Do you need to at least head nod? What if you can't think of anything to chat to them about? What if you don't want to get locked into a long chat? After walking us through his bad experience of being ignored, Nelson finally reveals that the 'friend of a friend' is in fact one of our own.       With very special guests "Mad Lifts" and "Copy Cat" (Frank Walker from National Tiles). This episode we are venturing into outer space to discuss a very British UFO encounter in 1950s Scotland. While our American cousins had been seeing aliens regularly for almost a decade, the British had been much less willing to disclose any extraterrestrial encounters. That was until pulp fiction writer and amateur astronomer Cedric Allingham spotted a saucer while walking on the Scottish coast.Cedric wrote a book on his experience of meeting and trying (with little success) to chat to a Martian. A curious choice to be sure, but Traitor's Purse is a powerful tale marking a moment in crime fiction history that echoes into modern classics. There's enough Golden Age goodness to scratch your mystery itch, and the spy fiction speeds this novel through a string of stunning setpieces.

Here on Death of the Reader, it's a rare stop on your Murder Mystery World Tour that gets a double-feature. Often it's to show the stark contrast between two portrayals, sometimes over decades, and the chosen double for this year was Albert Campion. Coming in at 12th for our 2022 recommendations, Cargo of Eagles was the final Campion novel penned by the series' creator, Margery Allingham, one of the oft-lauded four queens of Golden Age Crime. More spy-thriller than mystery, Campion's novels snuck their way onto your Murder Mystery World Tour on account of the legend that the spytective was originally envisioned as a parody of Dorothy L. Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey, and also because there are some fantastic novels in the Campion catalogue.

Coming in 15th place for our 2022 recommendations is Dorothy L. Sayers with ‘Whose Body?'. One of the Golden Age of Murder Mystery's four ‘Queens of Crime', alongside Christie, Marsh & Allingham, it would be difficult to overstate the significance of Sayers' contribution to the genre, as founding member and third president of The Detection Club, as well as a trailblazer in arts academia for women. Unfortunately, it would also be difficult to understate our enthusiasm for ‘Whose Body?'. There is a certain genius to its construction, a sharply poetic mind evident in its odd stylistic non-sequiturs and unusual if eloquent dialogue, but whilst that makes it fascinating to discuss, it doesn't make it the easiest read to recommend.

Campion visits Elsy, Oates, and other allies from his venture thus far, gearing up for a final showdown, rescuing Dido and Morty in the dying seconds. Can the gang clear out all the skeletons in the closet? Our intrepid newcomer on Death of the Reader, Lachlan, awaits his fate and the points Herds is fated to steal. We also speak with Australian author Chris Hammer to talk about his latest release, 'The Tilt'. Named after an iconic geographic feature in the Murray-Darling region, the novel sees Ivan Lucic and Nell Buchanan return from their last venture in 'Treasure and Dirt'. As the town starts to fill up with gawkers, can the spies see through the noise and stop the killer before they escape with riches. We also speak with Kate McCaffrey, YA author and crime-debutant about her latest novel 'Double Lives'. Radio journalist Amy Rhinehart has found the perfect show to beat her rival station at the ratings, a true crime series where the listeners can shape the investigation. Her house became an Air Raid Wardens' post and a First Aid centre, and Allingham herself became responsible for 275 East London evacuees in a rural community of just over 600. Commissioned by American publishing friends to recount what life was like, she began The Oaken Heart in the autumn of 1940, when the Battle of Britain gave way to the London Blitz. More Work for the Undertaker by Margery Allingham is our book this fortnight, and so we take a highly enjoyable trip through an eccentric, absurd, and Dickensian London with amateur detective Albert Campion and his companions. It's a complex, slightly fantastical mystery, but as usual with the Golden Age writers, evoked with deep insight and acute observation. Margery Allingham wrote a plethora of Campion books, so if you loved this one, good news! There are plenty more. As always, spoiler alert! @ Abbey Arts Centre, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal 7pm Sat 11 Nov ‘17 Unlike Ballyshannon's other famous son, Rory Gallagher, poet William Allingham (b. 1824) spent most of his adult life in his native town before moving to London in 1870. His lyrical and descriptive poetry, while somewhat out of fashion today, was a huge influence on W.B. Yeats and, later John Hewitt. Yeats made his observation shortly before Allingham's death in 1889, but later softened his view. So where does Allingham stand in the pantheon of Irish poets? Was he any good as a poet? To discuss these and related matters History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham, was joined for a lively discussion with Anthony Begley, Moya Cannon and Pauric Travers.

In Albert Campion, Margery Allingham created one of the timeless golden age detectives, often spoken of in the same breath as Lord Peter Wimsey and Inspector Alleyn. Faeries have been documented throughout history.  Around 1000 B.C., the Greek poet Homer wrote The Illiad, in which he describes, "watery fairies dance in mazy rings."  ("Mazy" means maze-like, or like a labyrinth.)In the 12 century, Gervase of Tilbury described portunes (one kind of small faeries) in detail.  He said that some are as tiny as one half inch tall, or as little as a small finger.Later reports confirm his descriptions.Shakespeare popularized the image of playful, tiny faeries in his play, A Midsummer Night's Dream.  However, he didn't invent them.  (Nobody invented faeries.  They already existed.)There are many theories about the origins of faeries, going back to the time of Genesis in the Bible.  We know so little about faeries, it's difficult to decide what's true about them, except that they exist. In this 13-minute podcast, Fiona Broome talks about many faerie (or fairy) topics.* Little faeries in history * The possible importance of our belief in them* Early descriptions of faeries as "pygmies"* William Allingham's poem, The Faeries, and the clues in itMusic: Moods of Man, written & orchestrated by James Underberg

When he was about ten years old poverty forced him to take a job in a factory to provide for his family. Now he was so ashamed of his time there that he never told anyone about it, but he couldn't hide the secret totally. According to Philip the experience surfaces in the actions and the attitudes of many of Charles Dickens, especially in Ebenezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol . Philip Allingham is a professor in the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay; he's also a Dickens scholar. CBC reporter Cathy Alex asked him what inspired Charles Dickens to write A Christmas Carol . Philip V. Allingham, Faculty of Education, Lakehead University, Dickens Scholar: He was fascinated by German ghost stories; in fact, he had written himself one in the middle of Pickwick Papers in 1836. In the fall of 1843 he was invited to go to Manchester, where he saw a good deal of urban poor, prostitution, other social ills. He and a number of other Victorian reformers including Cobden and Disraeli were to speak and so he heard all the tales of horror in industrial society. He saw a great deal of it; he stayed with his sister whom he loved very much--remember Scrooge's relationship with his sister. And his sister had a little boy who was lame; he probably had what we call now Pot's disease, tuberculosis of the bone, if you can imagine. So there is Tiny Tim, who was originally by the way called "Tiny Fred" after Dickens' younger brother, but "Tiny Fred" doesn't really make it does it. So in proof he corrected that to "Tiny Tim." He also put in the famous "God bless us, everyone!"--it wasn't in the original manuscript. And I think he was also interested in trying to help the ragged schools that were trying to educate poor children at night. These children worked in factories during the daytime. And so all of these things were fermenting in his mind and, like a great Coleridgian dream, A Christmas Carol was born.
