In this special episode in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the passing of Abdu'l-Baha, I'm joined by Kathryn Hogenson, author, and attorney, who joins me in my home in California. She tells me how she became a Baha'i and about Ruhiyyih Khanum and her time at the Baha'i World Centre. She also talks about the first Western Baha'i pilgrims to Holy Land, and she shares unknown stories of Abdu'l-Baha and the Bahai's of that time. I'm sure you'll enjoy this conversation as much I did! Naturally, the friends habitually look to the teachings to set the standard to which to aspire. In this debut episode, Madison and Abbey give a brief history of why they started Bristlecone Firesides. They discuss disconnection from the Earth and the tragedy of living decontextualized. And more to the point, they discuss the spiritual impacts of living in the culture of disconnection and how we can subvert those impacts through At-One-Ment and regaining a connection to the Earth. *Forgive the audio quality in this first episode. True to form, Madison is good with dirt, but bad with technology. **Corrected Aldo Leopold Quote because Madison's memory is bad: “There are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from the grocery, and the other that heat comes from the furnace.” Books and Links: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold The Art of the Commonplace by Wendell Berry Let Them Eat Dirt by B. Recently, the Mormon apologetic organization FAIRMormon has released several aggressive new videos via their YouTube Channel starring the actors Kwaku El, Cardon Ellis, and Brad Witbeck. These videos are intended to appeal to younger Latter-day saints, but also launch aggressive attacks against me (John Dehlin) and Jeremy Runnells (author of the CES Letter). The historical accuracy/honesty of these videos has also been called into question by many. Today we interview Anthony D. Miller - a wise and thoughtful post-Mormon - about these latest events. Some of the topics we hope to cover are listed below. We would also welcome your questions/comments. Topics for today: Motivations behind Mormon apologetics. Differences between Mormon apologetics and critical scholarship Contrast traditional apologetics and more progressive, nuanced apologetics Examples of people who have shifted from apologetics towards critical scholarship, and their explanations as to “the why.” Examples of people who engage with critical scholarship, but operate within Mormonism with a mostly a metaphorical paradigm with an apologetic bent. Contrast how GenZ, Millennials, GenX, and Baby Boomers engage with information. How GenZ at times experiences fragility, catastrophizing, call-out culture, and perception of violence in speech, and how these things affect engagement with apologetics and scholarship. (Jonathan Haidt’s book, The Coddling of the American Mind). Current spectrum of apologetics Approaches and methods for distribution Firesides and conferences Radical Orthodoxy proclamation, Deznat, etc. Adaptations to respond to social media, YouTube, TikTok What we might expect going forward Will this approach work? Will it backfire? Is it ethical?

Hello and welcome to the Baha’i Blogcast with me your host, Rainn Wilson. In this series of podcasts I interview members of the Baha’i Faith and friends from all over the world about their hearts, and minds, and souls, their spiritual journeys, what they’re interested in, and what makes them tick. In this episode, I'm joined via zoom by Dr. William H. Smith, or “Smitty” as he's affectionately known. Smitty is the Founding Executive Director of the National Center for Race Amity, and he's truly lived an exceptional life. He talks to me about growing up during segregation, and shares how he became a Baha'i. We talk about the challenges of balancing social activism while trying to obey the law, and he stresses the importance and serious impact genuine friendships can have on creating justice and lasting social change. We talk about food shaming, the power of the 12-step program, and all the ways the virtues can be incorporated into all aspects of our lives. She tells me how she became a Baha'i, her passion for restorative justice, what's she's working on now, and her recent experience in India at the largest school in the world. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! There is none other God but Thee, the Help in Peril, the Self-Subsisting." -Baha’u’llah * Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program: https://bit.ly/2BCBcuC * Year of service: https://bit.ly/3eAQmz2 * Dara shares these quotes by Baha'u'llah: "Intone, O My servant, the verses of God that have been received by thee, as intoned by them who have drawn nigh unto Him, that the sweetness of thy melody may kindle thine own soul, and attract the hearts of all men. Whoso reciteth, in the privacy of his chamber, the verses revealed by God, the scattering angels of the Almighty shall scatter abroad the fragrance of the words uttered by his mouth, and shall cause the heart of every righteous man to throb. Though he may, at first, remain unaware of its effect, yet the virtue of the grace vouchsafed unto him must needs sooner or later exercise its influence upon his soul. Thus have the mysteries of the Revelation of God been decreed by virtue of the Will of Him Who is the Source of power and wisdom." "O MY SERVANT! The best of men are they that earn a livelihood by their calling and spend upon themselves and upon their kindred for the love of God, the Lord of all worlds." "O SON OF SPIRIT! It’s fighter season Firesides, and Marvel vs Capcom Infinite dropped not to long ago. Since Maurer is still trying to stop the Gambit movie like a sad remake of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back... Mendte, Features, and Baby Huey break down the pros and cons. Is the story worth it? How does it stack up against Injustice 2? Plus they gush about Future Fight again... because yes... we’re all still obsessed. Except Maurer, he’s hunting down his current obsession. So pick your fighter and let’s go a couple rounds. Welcome to Fireside.
This episode of Firesides sees hosts Gregory Edwards and DJ Hansen getting nostalgic with Boss Dungeon writer Michael Carey and friend of the show Raz Hampton. They reminisce over the seventh generation of home consoles, now snuggling up in its death bed, waiting for the reaper. The group recounts their highs and lows of the generation, both with games and trends, and find out that, while companies may have taken consumers for a wild ride, they had fun with it.
In the third episode of The BD Firesides, Greg and DJ are once again joined by Michael Carey to discuss the Final Fantasy franchise. Memories are stirred up and everyone gets in the mood to replay at least one game in the franchise as it gets both lavished with praise and harshly lambasted.
Our hosts are joined by fellow Boss Dungeon writer Michael Carey for discussion about the Tales JRPG franchise. They discuss every game they've played in the series, as well as some of the additional media such as the Tales of Vesperia prequel movie. (Spoilers: Tales of Vesperia is beloved)
A fireside I did on God’s Grace and my view of the Doctrine of Christ. There is a powerpoint associated with this episode that is available for sale on the products page which is great for Firesides. In the first episode of a new podcast for Boss Dungeon, hosts Gregory Edwards and DJ Hansen are joined by guests and fellow writers Julian Rittmayer and Tobiichi Karlsson for a discussion on the entire Resident Evil franchise.
