Samuel's faithful preaching to Israel called God's people to repentance for their idolatry, and Israel listened. As Samuel led the people in confession of their sins, the Philistines used the opportunity to attack. This time, Israel implored Samuel to pray for them and sought the LORD's counsel. After the LORD won the victory over the Philistines for Israel, Samuel set up a stone and named it Ebenezer as a remembrance of the LORD's help for Israel. Rev. Andrew Jagow, pastor at Bethany Lutheran Church in Alexandria, VA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study 1 Samuel 7:3-17. "A Kingdom Unlike All the Nations” is a series on Sharper Iron that goes through 1-2 Samuel. This time in Israel's history has its highs and lows, but the LORD's faithfulness never wavers. He provides His Word to be proclaimed faithfully through prophets like Samuel and Nathan. Even as princes like Saul and David sit on an earthly throne, the LORD remains King over His people, even as He does now and forever through the Lord Jesus Christ. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org

Why would Israel want a king? What were the good and the bad from having a king?
1 Samuel 7:3 | Preparar vuestro corazón a Jehová... y os librará. In this week's sermon, Grace and Gratitude: We are the Reformed and Always Reforming, Rev. Cam Thomas explores the themes of God's unmerited grace and our ongoing journey of transformation. Reflecting on 1 Samuel 7:12 and Exodus 3:10-15, Rev. Thomas delves into how God's faithfulness and call upon our lives lead us to a deeper gratitude, shaping us as a people who are "Reformed and always reforming." As we remember the grace that brought us here, we are invited to reflect on how we continue to be transformed by God's presence and love. Tune in for an inspiring message of thankfulness, renewal, and the continuous work of God in our lives. Send us a textAnd that wraps up today's episode! Though we cannot force God's Spirit to move toward revival, we can do three things to prepare our hearts and lives for it. We must put away the idols of our hearts, devote ourselves fully to the LORD, and serve him alone. These were Samuel's instructions to the Israelites, and they are God's to us today.
