Something amazing happens when we are brave enough to ask the questions, have the simple conversations and try to understand, right? We hear the saying," be slow to speak, quick to listen and slow to anger" but often times that simple phrase is so hard to do when we are unable to give space for understanding. Today, I welcome you all to a special conversation with guest Aaron Abernathy. This is the first face to face interview I've had the honor to do in over 15 weeks and what a treat it was to do it with Aaron. He is a mutli-talented artist with a gift of using his voice and passion for music to build bridges between men and women, especially black and brown men and women. We went on a journey on this episode and dove into how do we move from anger to disappointment to the final destination of understanding. We went there y'all and it got real and Aaron dropped some powerful nuggets. He even gave us a challenge that I believe we all can do and if we do healing can occurr in our communities and families. I want to also invite you to head on over to Spotify and check out Aaron's 'Affirmation' album. To stay connected to what Aaron is doing in the world, follow him on IG @aaron_abernathy and www.aaronabernathy.com. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/braveinvision/support

WASHINGTON, DC) July 19, 2019 – Award-winning recording artist Cecily (Harmonius Grits, LLC), releases new single “Clumsy” from her tantalizing upcoming 5-track EP, Awakening Pt.1, available July 26th. “Clumsy” is part homage and throwback to the gritty sound that made soul music stand out: sensual vocals, funky bass lines, introspective lyrics, warm Rhodes, and bebop-inspired horn arrangements. You’ll hear influences of J Dilla and Roy Hargrove. For this song, Cecily collaborated with Soul/Jazz artist Drew Kid, and bassist Malik Hunter, who plays with Black Milk and Aaron Abernathy. Lyrically, songwriter Cecily was inspired by the following quote from Thich Naht Hahn's book How To Love: "To love without knowing how to love wounds the person we love.” “The song”, Cecily says, “is about being vulnerable enough to say, ‘I don't love myself the way I should, and I don't want to hurt you while I figure out how to do that.’ It’s about rejecting the fear of being alone.” The track is symbolic of the rest of Awakening Pt. 1, which is an album about loving yourself. “These are stories of choosing love over fear, and I hope these songs serve as a reminder to my listeners to do the same.” – Cecily
Aaron Abernathy, is a pianist/soul singer and multi-talented entertainer. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Abernathy comes from a long-line of historical pioneers including Civil Rights Leader, Rev. Ralph David Abernathy and student of the same high school music program as the late R&B great Gerald Levert. He joined the ranks of artists like Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack as a graduate from the prestigious music program at Howard University, where he sharpened his piano playing and musicianship by majoring in jazz piano. With outstanding talents as both a pianist and a vocalist, he has acted as musical director for global touring acts Black Milk and Slum Village and collaborated with Grammy-nominated artists including Jack White, The Foreign Exchange, and Eric Roberson. His professional music pursuits began on the historical steps of Howard University, where he formed the band Ab and The Souljourners and developed a buzz on the local DC music scene with the release of his self-produced debut album Lyrically Inclined 1.3: The Odyssey. After graduating from Howard, they embarked on a US Tour. The band's talent and showmanship style caught the eye of several artists, most notable Eric Roberson, Marsha Ambrosius, and Slum Village. Eric Roberson featured Abernathy in his NYC based showcases and on his 2009 single "Howard Girls." Slum Village hired Abernathy to be their musical director from 2005-2010, revamping their performances from the traditional DJ and Emcee format to live band hip-hop experience. He also was featured on the single "Dance" from their 2010 album Villa Manifesto.

Vocalist and songwriter Cecily releases her first full album entitled Songs of Love and Freedom on May 4th. The sound pulls heavily from 1970’s soul and R&B, specifically the work of Gil Scott-Heron, The Isley Brothers, and Norman Connors. On this project Cecily collaborated with Aaron Abernathy, Diggs Duke, Drew Kid, and John Daise and Brother Spanky of the group Columbia Nights. The album includes Cecily’s newest single “Pisces.” Kim Hines of Soulbounce reviewed the song saying, “With a honeyed soprano reminiscent of the great Minnie Riperton, Cecily continues to draw you in with her positive, introspective lyrics.” Cecily explains the inspiration behind the project, “With each song I tried to capture a moment. I tried to give you the moment I sat in the grass in London feeling the sun on my face appreciating not having to please anyone but myself. I tried to give you the moment I was in Ghana’s lush green Volta region and felt the power of Wli Falls spraying my back — how alive that felt! I tried to give you the moment I sat in my room in silence looking at Spring outside my window and knew that the Universe was holding my hand and leading the way, if only I let my ego go. I tried to give you the moment I learned of the murder of Jordan Edwards, just 15 years old and killed by a police officer. The moment I found Hope in hopelessness.”Known for her sweet soprano, honest lyrics, and pure vocals, Cecily brings her own vulnerability to each song, telling her story, and hopes that, at the end, the audience feels vulnerable enough to tell their own stories. In her hometown of Washington, DC Cecily has opening for Grammy Award winning jazz and soul artist Gregory Porter, R&B stars Johnny Gill, Kenny Lattimore, and Elle Varner, and alternative soul pioneer Bilal.

On 2016's Monologue, soul man Aaron Abernathy explored his journey from a boy to the man he is today. Abernathy had every intention of continuing that story in his next song cycle, but a funny thing happened on the way to that follow up: The world went crazy... and Abernathy began asking questions. LOTS of questions.A spiritual heir to Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, Dialogue finds Abernathy looking at the world around him, and searching deep inside AND out for answers to the daily horrors that seem to have taken over the zeitgeist. What does it mean to be decent in a world that seemingly only rewards depravity? How can an African American survive in a society that continues to not just perpetrate, but ostensibly celebrates systemic white supremacy? Do even the smallest of human actions matter? These questions and more provide the framework for that rarest of things, a true soul record that trades as much in heart as it does universal truth and meaning. Join Kevin, Marcus K. Dowling, and Eduardo in the basement as they have their own dialogue about the world today and one of the most relevant and powerful albums to date of this new American landscape.
