Send us a textEpisode 128. Vahn Black is a Detroit-born vocalist, songwriter, producer and memory worker. She has crafted a sound-world of her own that marries her love of history, jazz vocalists, Black folk traditions and hip-hop producers. As a teenager, Black attended Detroit School of Arts High School where she studied classical and jazz music as a Vocal major. In 2014, Black placed runner-up in the Detroit Jazz Festival's Youth Jazz Vocal Competition. She later enrolled in Spelman College's music program, focusing on classical vocal performance and modern composition, becoming the first student of the program to perform a senior recital of original non-classical compositions. In 2023, Black was selected to perform at NPR's Tiny Desk on the Road Tour stop in Atlanta and has also performed as an opening act for MAJOR., Anthony Hamilton, Chrisette Michele, Elle Varner, and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.Black's latest work, "Walk in the Rain," is the second of a trilogy that centers the story of Blues singer Gladys Bentley as told in the 1952 article "I Am a Woman Again". Displaying Black's passion for archival research and amplifying the voices of Black music elders, this project bridges the gaps of Bentley's small archive to create a more complete, imaginative story of her life. This explores Bentley's life-long desire to belong and be loved, the elements of life that brought her joy and the fluid nature of her gender expression and sexuality.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. If you've ever found yourself relaxing on the couch with a warm cup of tea, lost in thought about your day, Cecily's beautiful music is exactly what you need to enhance those moments. Cecily is an amazing vocalist and songwriter based in DC, known for her soothing and rich voice. She describes her music as a blend of soul with strong influences from jazz, 90's R&B, and a touch of folk. She's shared the stage with some incredible talent, opening for award-winning artists like Gregory Porter and Jose James, as well as R&B stars like Johnny Gill, Kenny Lattimore, and Elle Varner. She's even performed alongside folk artist Becca Stevens and alternative soul pioneer Bilal. Just this past June, she released Awakening Pt. II, the follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2019 project Awakening Pt. I. I had the pleasure of chatting with her virtually on Zoom, and it was truly inspiring. We explored her musical influences, reminisced about her experiences at the Umbria Jazz Festival, and discussed her connection to Gil Scott-Heron. We also delved into the messages and creative process behind Awakening Pt. II. We wrapped up our conversation by talking about her approach to songwriting and the challenges of releasing an album independently. It was such a delightful exchange, and I really hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed our conversation!

His credits include Rihanna's ANTI World Tour, Regina Hall (Scary Movie, Girls Trip), Rah Digga of Flipmode Squad, Tiffany Haddish, KJ Smith (Tyler Perry's “Sistas”), Charlemagne Tha God, Desus Nice, Kash Doll, Aisha Hinds (9-1-1, True Blood), Chris Spencer, Tammy Townsend (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), Camille Winbush (The Bernie Mac Show), Elle Varner, Paloma Ford, Miss Nikki Baby (Love & HipHop Hollywood), Olympic gold medalist English Gardner, Wanda Durant, Birgundi Baker (The Chi), Lauren E. The HamilTones are performing at Salute Her Charlotte, but first, they stop by Cafe Mocha to talk about the debut of their long-awaited EP and becoming comedy YouTube sensations. We all know Elle Varner (@ElleVarner) is a songbird, but did you know what go-to routine literally inspires her EVERY move? On this episode, host Julee ‘Global' Wilson sits down with the songstress to talk about letting go of deadweight (within your body and your soul…#justsaying), and how she believes all Black women should be putting themselves first in a world that puts them last. Speak on it, sis!!
Today we discuss Miley & Liam's breakup, the Emmy's going hostless, Danny Trejo saving a baby, Emily Ratajkowski's armpit hair & Elle Varner joins the table.
Not every performer can make a hit, let alone land a few that make waves on the charts. In an era where music heads consume, create, and demand quality music all the time, it's difficult to let songs that could stand on its own, time to grow. Singer-songwriter Elle Varner's never had that problem. Debuting in 2012 with a pair of R&B hits that were a breath of fresh air for the genre, the LA native is back with Ellevation, an EP project that was made on her own terms. Varner stopped by the POTB set to chop it up about her approach to crafting a hit, and what's required to be consistent. "It doesn't matter if you have all these co-signs, or if someone 'hands it to you', it doesn't matter. You can't cheat the hard work," Varner said about staying loyal to your craft. "So the ones that will last, the ones that will stand the test of time, they must ride peaks and the valleys. There's no way around it." Highlights How has her writing process evolved over her career Adopting Kobe's winning mindset to her live shows The state of women in R&B Serena Williams' impact on Compton What's required for her to get into her "Flow state" Crafting songs for your core audience, b side tracks Defining success as an artist on her own terms The first hip hop, r&b albums you give your kids The greatest songwriters to study Her musical family Versus: The greatest 90s movies soundtrack of all time. And more. On The Points On The Board podcast, we interview the closers and finishers from every discipline. Each week, digital producer, journalist Kyle Harvey sitdowns with rising athletes, sportswriters and creatives to breakdown the lessons they learned from the field of competition and how they applied to dominate it their crafts. We're back. Did you miss us? Admit it, you missed us. We'd probably miss us too, cause we're awesome. But enough about us. This week we get into Blood Orange, Elle Varner and Nas' albums respectively (big shoutouts to Elle Varner. We love you, come do the podcast). We also get into everyone wanting to storm Area 51 and a couple conspiracy theories, R Kelly finally being taken into custody, the Bagel Boss guy having a "little" bit of fame (sorry we couldn't help it), the girls answer some questions the guys have been wanting to ask for a while and much much more. Rare form on this one. We were like Kobe in the 4th quarter (CLUTCH). So sit back, relax and................oh you know the rest of it by now. An in depth review of Elle Varner's new album “Ellevation.” After 7 years and numerous singles that led to nowhere Elle Varner has released her second album. Although she has a unique voice that I've never heard anything like it before, that doesn't always lead to a successful career. I really had to open my mind on this one and see exactly what I was dealing with. The talent was there but was the content good?? You will have to listen to the podcast to find out!! Additionally, I talked about losing a good boss, how I felt about The Lion King and other random stuff (business as usual). Just opinions from my side about the albums (lyrics, concept, jokes, etc). ENJOY!!! Requests are always welcome. Follow me on twitter @bluntcuzicar365. We are back on the #SoulBackPodcast despite some serious technical difficulties. Our mics had issues which would explain the sound quality of our podcast but it's all good because we still have some great content. Our boy Dan Bamber joins us as a special guest co-host as Edd is off this week. This somehow coincidentally falls on the same week that we have Elle Varner in the building. In this interview with Elle, we talk to her about her hiatus, her amazing debut album "Perfectly Imperfect" as well as her new album "Ellevation". Elle Varner talks to us about how happy she is currently as an independent artist and the freedom she feels she has when she's recording her music. The SoulBack trio is back with a new episode of the podcast. There wasn't a lot of new music this week so we looked back at some of our least favorite eras of R&B including 2009-2010. We also debate if Usher's "Yeah!" is a timeless song or if it's just a trendy song for its time. We also compare "This Is How We Do It" to "Yeah!". We also talk about Sisqo's second album and if it's the worst R&B album of all time. We also bring in Spectacular Smith from Pretty Ricky to talk about the successful Millennium tour, Pretty Ricky's history as well as his success with his company Adwizar. The company is ranked as one of the fastest growing companies in the world right now, so we pick Spectacular's brain a little bit about social media. Vocalist and songwriter Cecily releases her first full album entitled Songs of Love and Freedom on May 4th. The sound pulls heavily from 1970’s soul and R&B, specifically the work of Gil Scott-Heron, The Isley Brothers, and Norman Connors. On this project Cecily collaborated with Aaron Abernathy, Diggs Duke, Drew Kid, and John Daise and Brother Spanky of the group Columbia Nights. The album includes Cecily’s newest single “Pisces.” Kim Hines of Soulbounce reviewed the song saying, “With a honeyed soprano reminiscent of the great Minnie Riperton, Cecily continues to draw you in with her positive, introspective lyrics.” Cecily explains the inspiration behind the project, “With each song I tried to capture a moment. I tried to give you the moment I sat in the grass in London feeling the sun on my face appreciating not having to please anyone but myself. I tried to give you the moment I was in Ghana’s lush green Volta region and felt the power of Wli Falls spraying my back — how alive that felt! I tried to give you the moment I sat in my room in silence looking at Spring outside my window and knew that the Universe was holding my hand and leading the way, if only I let my ego go. I tried to give you the moment I learned of the murder of Jordan Edwards, just 15 years old and killed by a police officer. The moment I found Hope in hopelessness.”Known for her sweet soprano, honest lyrics, and pure vocals, Cecily brings her own vulnerability to each song, telling her story, and hopes that, at the end, the audience feels vulnerable enough to tell their own stories. In her hometown of Washington, DC Cecily has opening for Grammy Award winning jazz and soul artist Gregory Porter, R&B stars Johnny Gill, Kenny Lattimore, and Elle Varner, and alternative soul pioneer Bilal.

Anyone whose had the pleasure of knowing singer, business woman, songwriter pianist, reality television star and Memphis native, K. Michelle since her childhood is aware that she was destined to be the woman she is today. Gymnastic, swimming and piano courses kept her inquisitive spirit busy until age nine, when the time arrived for her to begin vocal lessons with renowned children’s vocal coach Bob Westbrook (Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears etc). A lifelong affinity for country music (The Judds are a personal favorite), lead to Michelle earning a scholarship to Florida A&M for yodeling. With Michelle’s second and final season of L&HHA’s beginning this spring, it couldn’t be a more fitting time for the release of her debut album, Rebellious Soul. For the millions of fans who have watched the no-nonsense cutie fight for what she feels is right on television every week, her album title is most apropos. “I’m a rebel, a firecracker,” she tells. “I do what I want to do. My music is like that as well. I rebel against anything that society tries to use to keep us boxed in––racism, judgment, anything that makes you feel inferior as a woman.” The result is what she describes as an “old-school” but “aggressive and urgent” music feel. Expect the guest list of vocalists to include Elle Varner and Michelle’s mentor R. Kelly, who will also embrace some maestro duties.
