"This record is somebody's pathway to not jumping off that ledge." With that profound truth, Maurice “Piranhahead” Herd ushers listeners into a sonic and spiritual odyssey on Detroit is Different. A master craftsman of music and energy, Piranhahead unpacks how his Mississippi roots led through Muskegon to Detroit's east side, eventually shaping a global funk and house music legacy rooted in community and Black excellence. From making cassette deck beats as a kid to orchestrating full string arrangements for legends, he reflects, “It's more to life than the funk.” His stories stretch from shoveling snow at Grandma's to jamming with Enemy Squad, to late-night spiritual calls with mentor Paul Riser. Whether recalling his Detroit studio days with Mollywop or being moved by Donny Hathaway, Piranhahead reminds us, “Some records will change somebody's life… everything, the heart got to be there.” He challenges Detroiters not to give up their land, not to forget their sound, and to reclaim the city's rhythm. “Detroit is heaven now... got a little hell in it though.” Detroit is Different is a podcast hosted by Khary Frazier covering people adding to the culture of an American Classic city. Tune in as we pay tribute to the incomparable Roberta Flack, who we sadly lost last month. From her 1969 debut album First Take (featuring Open Studio artist Ron Carter on bass) to her iconic collaborations with Donny Hathaway – we dissect why what Flack didn't play was just as important as what she did. We'll explore how this classical piano prodigy, who entered Howard at 15 and didn't write her own songs, became the Quiet Storm Queen that influenced every soul, R&B, and jazz singer since. You'll hear why her understated yet commanding vocals and that classic 70s kick drum made “Killing Me Softly” a hit, grooving duets like “You've Got A Friend,” and deep cuts that redefined ballads. Join us to uncover the genius of Roberta Flack.
The “I”s have it! And Lightnin' Licks Radio has the “I”s. Ten of them to be exact. Jay and Deon discuss their favorite vinyl records filed under the letter I. It's intimate and intense. It's immersive and inspiring though, ironically, they're idiots.--In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past half century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2024, idiotic, introverted award-winning* hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-fifth episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works. We lost another musical legend yesterday, Roberta Flack. We have lost another music icon—Roberta Cleopatra Flack passed away this week at the age of 88. Born in North Carolina, Flack's musical genius was evident early on. At just 15, she earned a full scholarship to Howard University, making her the youngest freshman in the school's history. Though she started as a classical pianist and teacher, her talent led her to jazz and pop, performing in Washington, D.C. clubs in the late 1960s. Les McCann discovered her at Mr. Henry's restaurant, leading to her record deal with Atlantic Records. From there, Flack delivered some of the most timeless and soulful music of our generation. Her hits like “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Killing Me Softly with His Song,” and “Feel Like Makin' Love” topped the Billboard Hot 100, and she became the first artist to win back-to-back Grammys for Record of the Year. Though Clint Eastwood's use of her song in Play Misty for Me catapulted her into mainstream fame, her collaborations with Donny Hathaway and others defined the soundtrack of our lives. After being diagnosed with ALS, Flack retired from performing but remained active in philanthropy, supporting music education and animal rescues. Reports say she passed at home, though her manager stated she suffered cardiac arrest on her way to the hospital in Manhattan. Roberta Flack leaves behind a legacy of groundbreaking music and timeless artistry. May she rest in peace and power. For more on her life and legacy, follow @TanyaHollywood and visit @aurnonline. Happy New Year and thanks for downloading my favourite selections from The Disco Podcast's 2024 sets. And there was something powerful about February's mix, because that was by far your most popular download of the year. Quite a few tracks from that set have made it onto this Best Of, including Anane, Dave Leatherman, Paolo Bardelli, Saturday Love, Hold Tight and Ken@Work. 2024 definitely had more of a soulful disco vibe and that's reflected by edits and remakes of the inimitable Lou Rawls and Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, plus my personal favourite track of the year from Tamiko Jones - "Let it flow". Welcome back to The Round 12 MOTIVATIONAL MASTERY Podcast Show! Episode #137 “BY ANY MEANS!” …The Malcolm X Speech and Ossie Davis Eulogy! Good Sunday morning to everyone who decided to check in on the Round 12 Podcast again today. Last week's episode was a presentation of the famous Martin Luther King Jr., “I have a Dream Speech.” When I decided to present this important historical speaking event, I felt it wouldn't be complete without appropriate credit and recognition to one of the most important change agents the United States and the world has ever known… Malcolm X! This, his 1964 speech at the founding rally of the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU), was the beginning of the end for him. Shortly after this event he was assassinated while speaking in the same building. Included in the episode are the words of his Eulogy, spoken originally by the illustrious actor and activist, Mr. Ossie Davis. Yes, there are many of us who heard about or saw the Spike Lee Movie called, Malcolm X, which received rave reviews… but even after all these years, this man Malcolm X is still one of the most misunderstood, revered and simultaneously reviled men of all time. So, I felt compelled to give this African American man, his fair and equitable moment here with me on my humble journey. My hope and my goal are to take historical perspectives like these and learn from them, so I can continue to do my part to Make Our World a Better Place to Live In. Wish me luck! …And as always, I wish you Peace. BE SURE TO CLICK THE ATTACHED LINK TO SEE OUR DETAILED INFORMATIONAL EMAIL OR TO SUBSCRIBE: https://conta.cc/3NpLS1e Intro & Outro Music Provided by... In which the Curmudgeons end their epic series of odes to the music of a nine-year period that transformed everything--and then some--in popular music. By 1972, the hangover from the revolutionary vibes of the 1960s had subsided, and that era's outgrowth of freedom and experimentation truly started to blossom. The Rolling Stones filtered American roots music through a dirty, sweaty prism to create a true rock masterpiece. David Bowie perfected glam rock and intergalactic theater to create a masterpiece of his own. And Stevie Wonder, Al Green and Curtis Mayfield set Black music on a wilder, more lush course. We explore all of that and much more during this episode. In which The Curmudgeons stand up to the man and deliver the best of the best of a special era for both cinema and music, when African-Americans anti-heroes lit up the screens and imaginations of a generation of young Black people. And also young Black artists, who cranked out stunning funk, soul and disco anthems to accompany these films. Isaac Hayes, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and The Staple Singers were among the legends who contributed to this electrifying canon. We enter our wayback machine and revisit some of the best Black music of its time. Winter, spring, summer, or fall... all you have to do is call, and Strong Songs will be there with an in-depth analysis of one of the most influential songwriters of the 20th century. This episode takes a deep dive into Carole King's ever enduring, much-covered tribute to friendship, "You've Got a Friend." What starts in Laurel Canyon in the early 70s spread outward to the world, thanks to King's revolutionary 1971 album Tapestry. 50 years later, those songs are still with us, and "You've Got a Friend" remains one of the most meaningful tributes to simple, platonic love. Donny Hathaway was a singer, songwriter, and performer so inspiring that he compelled Stevie Wonder to change the way he sang, got Amy Winehouse to name-check him in her lyrics, and made musical giants like Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin stand up and take notice. But he was as troubled as he was talented. He suffered from hallucinations and paranoia, and was haunted in the recording studio just hours before his mysterious death at the age of 33. Soul is one of those concepts that is often evoked, but rarely satisfactorily defined. In The Meaning of Soul: Black Music and Resilience Since the 1960s (Duke University Press 2020), Emily J. Lordi takes on the challenge of explaining “soul,” through a book that zooms in and out between sweeping ideas about suffering and resilience in Black culture and fine-grained, close readings of individual performances by soul musicians. Rather than centering big musical gestures and major popular hits, Lordi pays close attention to musical practices like falsetto, ad-libs, and false endings to ground her analysis. She focuses on artists that are some of the most recognizable Black singers in the United States such as Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, and James Brown, but she also spends a lot of time with more obscure figures including Donny Hathaway and Minnie Riperton. She ends the book with a powerful contemplation of how the logic of soul, born in the political and social tumult of the late 1960s, still resonates with some of today's most popular women singers. Emily J. Lordi is an Associate Professor of English at Vanderbilt University. The Meaning of Soul is her third book. In addition to her scholarly work, she is an active cultural critic and music journalist published in venues such as Billboard, The Atlantic, and NPR. Kristen M. Kristen M.
