Lucas 15:17-24

This week, James and Will are joined by journalist, author and cyclist, James Witts. James writes for a host of prestigious titles including the most prestigious of them all, Cyclist magazine, along with The Guardian, GQ, Rouleur and Men's Health to name but four more. James also edits the annual official Tour de France guide and has penned four books including his most recent, Dope, which explores the doping landscape of sport, from opium and the Ancient Greeks to modern athletes and micro-dosing EPO. In this episode, James explains what constitutes a banned substance; how performance enhancers such as EPO work; how the biological passport catches cheats; how evasion might still happen at altitude camps; and what ‘legal' methods athletes might still use. We also discuss the recent night-time testing at the Tour de France and what it might mean; how anti-doping agencies are funded and why that model is so murky; why athletes dope in the first place (it's not what you might think); and that million-dollar question – is cycling actually clean?Dope by James Witts (Blink Publishing) is out nowWe also discuss the tragic news of the death of cyclist Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal. The 2026 Vuelta a España rolls out from Monte Carlo at the weekend, and we'll be on the ground for the eleventh straight year to bring you all of the action, starting with our race preview. Before Daniel Friebe and Larry Warbasse assess the route and riders, we reflect on the devastating passing of Finlay Tarling in last week's Volta a Portugal. Harrison Wood was also racing in the Volta. He gives us the rider's perspective of what occurred. For our look ahead to the Vuelta, Larry honestly answers the question of whether he or any of the other riders in the field can realistically hope to beat Tadej Pogačar (clue: it's a fairly resounding ‘no'). Having established that, we look closely at a decidedly spicy route and what opportunities it may offer riders not targeting the GC.In Loving Memory of Finlay TarlingFollowing the tragic death of Finlay Tarling in stage 8 of the Volta a Portugal, a fund has been set up, with the blessing of his parents and in Finlay's name, with the goal of providing an opportunity to help future generations of young Welsh riders. Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin discuss the tragic death of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal before getting into what Tadej Pogačar's decision to start the Vuelta a España means for his chances at the Worlds. They also go through a roundup of recent results, like Wout van Aert's impressive showing at the Tour of Denmark, and transfers, including rumors of Primož Roglič going to Lotto-Intermarché, and what Isaac del Toro renewing with UAE means for his future as a Tour de France contender, and whether it kills any chance of Paul Seixas going to the superteam.
