Hello Listen Localers! On today's show we catch up with Senate District Seat 6 Candidate Steve Cotariu. Steve talks about his background, the main platform he's running on, and what the deciding factor was for him to throw his name in the ring of a crowded Republican-side of this election. Also, while you may not know Steve's real name, you may have heard of his alter-ego, Hudson the Magician. He dives into a little about why he got into Magic, after a prolific career in the Army and the big-business sector. After Steve heads out the crew chats about the Local BLA Happenings, including the Candidate Forum that happened Tuesday night. While it was after this show was recorded, the Listen Local team felt they needed to add their thoughts on the "craziness" that went down at that event. Including a belligerent fella who was shuffling around the Forum in Snuggie yelling profanities. Yes, a Snuggie... Tune in to hear all about it. And as always... Ok, Listen Local Fam....Almost each week we have a guest(s) that brings so much to the shows... but let us tell you today's episode was one of the MOST ENTERTAINING YET! Local Celebs Tess Taylor (host of The Morning Mess on WJJY) and Tony Bonsante (Former Pro Boxer and Reality TV Star) stop by the studio. While they thought they were just coming on to discuss everything Lakes Area Dancing with the Stars - which trust us, we did - it also turned into one of the best all-around episodes in the history of Listen Local. Everything from their backgrounds to what led them - or brought them back - to the BLA to their professional careers to why this community means so much to them. There was even a point when it looked like Tony and Colton were going to turn the studio into a boxing ring as they each were sticking up for their alma maters (Pequot Lakes and Crosby High Schools)! While we like you to tune into each and every episode, this is one of those CAN'T MISS. Especially if you are looking for some good laughs and conversation! Thanks so much to Tess and Tony for stopping by, mainly to discuss how the community can support Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity and Lakes Area Dancing with the Stars. Come back anytime! Hi everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! On this final episode of 2024 the Listen Local crew goes BIG and talks all things Vikings with a former Vikings Pro Bowl Linebacker and a long-time Twin Cities Sports Director! With the Vikings beating the Packers this past weekend, they now head to Detroit in arguably not only the biggest regular season game in franchise history, but also in NFL History. Both teams are 14 and 2 and the winner of this Sunday's game against the Lions will be the number 1 seed and will have Home Field advantage throughout the playoffs. Vikings games mean so much to so many people and businesses around the BLA and all over MN, which is why the crew wanted to have this Vikings-centric show. The first guest on today's show is none other than former KARE 11 Sports Director Eric Perkins to talk about not only this year's team, but also reminisce on past seasons. Perk also tells the crew what some of his favorite memories cover the Vikings are. After Perk, Vikings Legend Chad Greenway joined the show. Chad, who had been on the show in the past, talks with Isaiah and Jacob for quite some time about everything from his thoughts on how far this year's team can go, to similarities he sees between them and the '09 team he was on that made it to the Conference Finals, to thoughts on coaching and culture. Before we let Chad go we had to talk to him about what it is like being a fan now of his daughters who are some of the best high school basketball players in the State. He also chats about his partnership with Ziegler Cat and running his hobby farm. As always, thanks to Chad for joining and Skol Vikes! Lastly... THANK YOU SO MUCH TO ALL OF OUR LISTENERS IN 2024! Hello Listen Local Listeners! This is OFFICIALLY our last episode before the election, and man have some of these local elections started to heat up, specifically... Nisswa Mayor. That Race has gotten not only local and statewide attention, but even national stories! So, while we planned on doing a big breakdown of the Best of Brainerd Lakes contest, and some other local BLA hot topics, we did have a surprise guest stop by towards the end of the show to really give some great insight on some of Nisswa's main discussion points. Councilman - and Nisswa native - Jesse Zahn dives into, and provides the public facts, on points that both Mayor Ryan and Jennifer Carnahan mentioned while they were on their respective Listen Local episodes. From discussion of Nisswa's current debt (plus bonds and levies) to the city's potential big picture projects and even dives into his thoughts about both mayoral candidates. Very, VERY good stuff from Jesse. Thanks to him for taking time to stop by! And as always... Hello everybody!! Hope you are all doing well! It FINALLY feels like fall-weather is here. Man, do we have an episode for you all! Not only does our pal and sponsor Dr. Andy Vantreese fill-in for Colton, but with Fire Prevention Week coming up the Listen Local crew felt it was the perfect time to bring on Pequot Fire Chief Mike Schwankl and Nisswa Fire Chief Shawn Bailey. Both talk about everything from events coming up - including open houses at the Nisswa Fire Department next Tuesday Oct. 10th and Pequot Fire Department on Wednesday the 11th - to fire prevention, the importance of checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly, and how both cities are looking to hire firefighters. On that note of Nisswa and Pequot needing firefighters, both Chiefs make their pitch to Jacob on why he should join their department. While one of them offers the cover of the firefighters calendar and a brand new ladder truck, the other offers being right next door to his favorite spots Main Street Ale House and Ye olde Pickle Factory. So, as you can imagine, Jacob is eating up this recruitment process... In all seriousness though, if you have ever thought of joining a fire department, stop by or reach out to your local fire chief. Like Pequot and Nisswa, many are looking to hire more firefighters. Thank you so much to Chiefs Bailey and Schwankl, and we highly encourage our Listen Local listeners to stop by the open houses next week! Thanks to all of you, our amazing listeners, and of course thank you so much to our sponsors Hanneken Insurance, Lakes Area CPAs, Outlet Recreation Crosslake, Posture Pro Chiropractic and our presenting sponsor Tyler Gardner with Pequot Lakes and Gull Lake Sanitation! Good day, BLA! On this episode the crew gets a little serious. Well for a little bit at least...Joining Jacob and Isaiah on this show is Mayor Tyler Gardner - who is filling in for Colton - along with Pequot Lakes Chief of Police Mike Davis. The topic for today... The new laws affecting School Resource Officers (SRO), and how that is leading many Police Departments removing their SROs from schools. This is one of the most informative episodes we've had on Listen Local as Chief Davis really breaks down the guidelines of this new law, and how there is a ton of "grey area" with the verbiage. Also, as Mayor, Tyler gives us a view from a city's perspective as well. After Chief Davis leaves, it seemed like the seriousness of the show did as well... It gets a little unhinged as Jacob, Tyler and Isaiah discuss everything from Tyler getting in a heated facebook dispute to Jacob's singing skills to Isaiah's feelings about patty melts... Oh and the Vikings blaming the fans for their latest loss. Also before the guys sign off, they chat about some local events this coming weekend, a sports update and another Lakes Jam artist announcement! The Listen Local crew chats with them about everything from how the band was formed to being "local BLA celebrities," to the importance of music within their whole family.
