Celebrating the third anniversary of Yesshift with a few topics! An icebreaker topic Dan came up with is the question of what one ABWH song we'd each have liked played on the Union Tour. Then we'll touch on July birthdays by talking about what Peter Banks era Yes songs we'd like to see on a new tour as a nod to him, notable Igor Khoroshev keyboard moments on The Ladder, and Trevor Horn's somewhat recent release Echoes: Ancient & Modern (a covers album follow-up to his earlier Reimagines the Eighties). And we'll collectively give our overall review of the Talk 30th anniversary release. (Steven definitely has a couple critiques that can pertain to Yes re-releases in general.) Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller Mark and I had a fun time this week re-watching the ABWH Brother of Mine video and the new Mirror to the Sky one. Listen out for our thoughts in a few minutes' time and see if you can count how many times I call the song Long Lost Brother of Mine by mistake. Also, do check out the show notes below before or during listening to Mark and me banging on because I've added lots of screenshots from the videos that we refer to in the conversation. You can also watch both videos as well without having to do that dreary web searching thing - it's just one of the services we offer to listeners. Are there any similarities between these two videos? How are videos used to help promote songs, today and in 1989? Are lyric videos any good? Let us know if you agree with us! Episode 129: Tommy Talton Tribute, Yes Minus One (ABWH), Lots More February 8, 2024 As I kick back and enjoy the warmth of the south for a month (lucky me), the weekly show spins on. Technology, amazing thing. I've got some live shows being uploaded into space and reflected back to earth to RadioFreeNashville and zip zip. They magically appear at 5PM Central time Wednesdays and with a little finesse they show up here and on many podcast apps. Life in the 21st Century. Ain't nothin' like the ‘60s & ‘70s, is it? Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller We took a break from Tales from Topographic Oceans this week to consider what Yes were up to in the 1980s. Across just four albums (if you are happy to call ABWH a Yes album), Yes music was somewhat different to what had come before. You are probably aware that our friends and YMP Patrons Stephen Lambe and Dave Watkinson wrote a whole book about Yes in the 1980s so don't forget to check that out if you don't already have a copy - it's currently available for a reduced price at Burning Shed (see below). Mark and I choose our favourite songs from each of these four albums and consider what makes the Yes music of the 1980s great. Are all the 80s records similar? How would you define the Yes music of this decade? Why isn't there more of it? Let us know if you agree with us! A (relatively) in-depth analysis of Bruford (the jazz-fusion band assembled and led by British drummer Bill Bruford) in (just under) fifteen minutes. Mathew is in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.
On this Yesshift interview recorded October 11, 2022, we interviewed bassist Jeff Berlin! Yes fans may be familiar with his work with Patrick Moraz, Bruford, and ABWH. We touched on those aspects of his career and more, but we also talked a good deal about his recently released album Jack Songs, a tribute to Jack Bruce featuring an all star roster of musicians. Join us as we celebrate and discuss the 50-year-old Yes album Close to the Edge! Chime in with any memories of how you discovered the music on this album or saw them play any of the songs live! The album line-up consisted of Jon Anderson, Jon Anderson – lead vocals, Steve Howe – guitars, electric sitar, steel guitar, backing vocals, Chris Squire – bass, backing vocals, Rick Wakeman – keyboards, Bill Bruford – drums, percussion. After recording this alum, Bill Bruford found the album particularly laborious to make, which culminated in his decision to quit the band after it was recorded, to join King Crimson. He said he would wit until they found his replacement for the tour, and Alan joined with just days to learn and rehearse the entire show. Bill would not play CTTE or “And You And I" until the ABWH tour in 1989 and never performed "Siberian Khatru.” Whether studio or live, this music is amazing and raised the bar for all things prog rock and is still known to most as the highest benchmark. When Jon Anderson went off to do ABWH, Yes members Tony Kaye, Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, and Alan White were left to ponder what to do next. They considered continuing as a quartet, and then considered replacing Anderson with Billy Sherwood, Steve Walsh, or Roger Hodgson. On this episode, we discuss what it might have been like had Yes West gone on without Anderson. Dan recalls when Alan told him about the touring plans with Supertramp before the whole Union thing came together, and we go over the tracks that Yes West worked on around that period, ending with each of us saying what we think the ideal track list for such an album would have been. 40 years ago, on August 1, 1981, MTV launched with The Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star" (viewable here: https://youtu.be/PJtiPRDIqtI) To commemorate the occasion, we talk not only about the music videos for that song, but also other music videos by The Buggles as well as Yes music videos that probably aired on MTV. We even talk a bit about Asia, ABWH, and Trevor Rabin's "Something to Hold Onto" music video. But before all that, we touch upon the 49th anniversary of Alan White's first Yes gig (7/30/1972), comments about the song "Mystery Tour" which will be on The Quest, a very brief update on the Monkman situation (you may have already heard), and a Tom Brislin post with a clever Yes reference. A wonderful night of top notch prog with Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe at the Greek Theatre Sept 6 & 7 1989. Great classic Yes tracks and solos for miles.
As the 1980s came to a close, the famed progressive rock group Yes had achieved major commercial and critical success over the course of several albums, but their lineup became splintered over time. A chance meeting between current Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin, and original vocalist Jon Anderson, who had recently formed a new supergroup with several other previous Yes members. (ABWH) The two brainstormed demos off of each other, and expressed an interest in collaborating. This discussion would make its way back to Yes' management, who turned the small collaboration between Anderson and Rabin into a merging of Yes' current lineup and ABWH.The album was appropriately titled Union, saw release in 1991, and featured a massive 8-member lineup of Yes that was inevitably too stacked and front-loaded to not turn into a mess behind the scenes. The record itself meanwhile was mostly dismissed by critics, who considered the album bloated and uninteresting, while the band members themselves largely reject Union to this day, referring to it more as a failed project than a proper Yes record. On this episode of Jukebox Zeroes, Lilz & Patrick meet up with Austin Scholl, the musician behind the post-punk outfit ThornBrain, and a YouTube streamer under the StrawHatNO channel. Join them as they give a listen to Union and decide for themselves whether the album was a failed project or not.Local Music Feature: "Bird Ghosts" by Smell

Episode 51 – Yes Part 15, Keys to Ascension & Open Your Eyes The almost full Palaver of Joe, Paul, Ken, Jay and Tom tackle both Keys to Ascension albums and Open Your Eyes in this episode. The musical parallels between Keys and Tormato are explored at some length whether or not they actually exist. Either way it seems this group can’t stop talking about that particular album (Ken suggests a drinking game). Tom sees Keys as a reaffirmation of a great band while Joe posits that Keys represents what ABWH should have been. Paul suggests a Mr. Crowley influence and Ken points out that Keys features a VERY restrained Rick Wakeman. Open Your Eyes fares less well in the eyes of the Palaver. A canon album in name alone, the group finds little redeeming here which is interesting given the obvious relationship between this album and The Ladder. Episode 48 – Yes Part 12, ABWH & Union For this episode of the Yes Palaver Paul, Ken and Joe discuss the curious period in Yes history with the albums Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe and Union. These two albums represent a very dynamic period in the band’s history. The interweaving timelines for the two Yes camps that resulted in these albums is fascinating and is ultimately punctuated by management intervention, producer shenanigans and “too many everybodies” vocals. Neither of them perhaps realize the potential for these groups of musicians but there are some highlights. For ABWH those highlights include Themes, Brother of Mine, Birthright and The Meeting (although all agree this song is better live than on the record). Highlights of Union include I Would Have Waited Forever, Lift Me Up and The More We Live, Let Go (not the questionable Mira-kill of Life or Angkor Wat). Ken posits that these are the two best Jon Anderson solo albums and Paul ultimately points to the real value of Union being the 8-man tour that opened fans such as ourselves to the magic of Awaken. ABWH in all its wonderful variety Produced by Robert Nasir, Jeffrey Crecelius, Wayne Hall, Preston Frazier and Bill Govier Depending on your point of view, this week we take a detour from Yes - or not.
