To celebrate Billy Sherwood's 60th birthday, we take a dip into the chronology of one of the bands he's been in, CIRCA: Every lineup has featured Billy Sherwood and Tony Kaye, and other faces involved over the years include Alan White, Jimmy Haun, Jay Schellen, Johnny Bruhns, Ronnie Ciago, Scott Connor, and Rick Tierney. Hear what we have to say about the history and the music.
Ronnie Ciago joined us for an interview! Drummer, drum instructor, clinician, author, vocalist, songwriter, and producer, he's worked with a LOT of people! In the Yes sphere, he has performed with Patrick Moraz at the Baked Potato and the Musicians Institute in 1996, on a cover of "Los Endos" from 1998's The Fox Lies Down on Broadway - A Tribute to Genesis, and the track "One Day in June" which ended up on Moraz's solo album Change of Space. And in 2011, he was part of a lineup of Circa: that also included Johnny Bruhns, Tony Kaye, and Billy Sherwood. Beyond all that, he has also worked with the likes of Jeff Berlin, Robert Downey Jr., Mick Taylor, Bill Ward, and more! During the interview, there were internet issues, but we were able to get him back on as the broadcast progressed.

On this episode of The Film Situation, we sit down with gaffer-turned-DP Tom Chaves to discuss his 15-year journey in the industry, the challenges of transitioning from lighting to camera, and the harsh realities of being pigeonholed in the film business. Tom shares insights on AI's growing impact on cinematography, the evolving landscape of indie filmmaking, and his own experiences working on everything from music videos to micro-budget features to high-end commercial gigs. We also dive into his deep love for cinema and discuss scenes from the Brazilian film CITY OF GOD and Tony Kaye's AMERICAN HISTORY X. Hosted by Zef Cota
Guitarist Johnny Bruhns joins us for an interview! We'll be talking a bit about a recent album he played on titled Tempus Sidereum II, as well as his history with Yes music and Yes members! He used to be in Yes tribute band Roundabout with Jon Davison, rehearsed with Yes in 2008 as they waited for Steve Howe to join the In The Present Tour rehearsals, played with Tony Kaye and Billy Sherwood in both Yoso and Circa, was chosen by Chris Squire to play guitars when Chris was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at Bass Player Live in 2012, played with Awaken: The Yes Music Experience, and has played with Yes tribute band Total Mass Retain. Join us as Johnny gives an update on how he's been doing, and sheds light on the future of TMR.
Dan and Steven go live with the first Yesshift episode of the year, and also the first Yesshift News Desk Edition of the year. Off the top, we acknowledge the passing of Peter Banks' Flash bandmate Colin Carter. We also give January birthday shout-outs to Tony Kaye, Trevor Rabin, and Jon Davison. And the news items include how you can get involved in a Chris Welch Q&A we're hosting via www.DrumTalkTVBrilliance.com , a new set of tour dates for Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks (which includes changes in the personnel), and some upcoming releases pertaining to Yes, Yes members, and prog rock.
Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
Yes had achieved chart success in the U.S. beginning with their third LP, The Yes Album. Original keyboard player Tony Kaye would be let go after that album, with former Strawbs keyboard player Rick Wakeman joining in mid-1971. Both the albums Fragile and Close to the Edge would be considered both fan and critical favorites, with a successful tour a triple-album live album and concert film in Yessongs. However, during that tour drummer Bill Bruford left for King Crimson and was replaced by Alan White, and Jon Anderson and Steve Howe began working on new music that would become one of the band's most controversial albums - Tales from Topographic Oceans.
In Production: Tales from Topographic OceansListening guide YesBooks.com Produced by Wayne Hall, Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller We spoke to publisher and Yes author Stephen Lambe this week about his (relatively) recent book Rock Classics - Yes 90125. The book delves deeply into the story of the 1983 album that became Yes' best selling record of all time and saw the rebirth of the band after the events following the Drama tour. It could all have been very different if Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, Tony Kaye and Alan White had stuck with their original plans of creating a much more stadium rock orientated band called Cinema. Stephen Lambe helps us to discover the unsung hero of the album's creation and the man who was responsible for bringing Jon Anderson back into the fold. Listen out for that later on in the episode and get hold of a copy of Stephen's book at Burning Shed or your favourite retailer. Who is the unsung hero of 90125? Did the members of Cinema want it to morph into Yes? What are the keys to the longevity of the album? Let us know if you agree with us! There are only 100 of these packs available, so buy yours now! The gang bites the curb this week as they review the hard-to-watch but meaningful film, American History X. Anyone who has seen this movie can usually pick out 2-3 very hard to watch scenes that are burned into their heads forever. It's not for the faint of heart, but for a purpose. One of the more impactful films, in the likes of Come and See, or Requiem For a Dream, where many times the viewer is a different person after watching the film.
Hey there!
Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Brad Birzer. Brad is the Russell Amos Kirk Chair in American Studies and Professor of History at Hillsdale College. He is also the co-founder of and Senior Contributor at The Imaginative Conservative, and the author of a number of books, including Neil Peart: Cultural (Re)Percussions. Find him online at bradbirzer.com or @bradleybirzer on Twitter.Brad's Music Pick: YesTell the moon dog, tell the march hare! We take you close to the edge of the south side of the sky this week as we discuss the early adventures of Britain's answer to all the questions raised by hippies during the Seventies, the New Age of Atlantic: Yes. Yes were one of the pillars of British progressive rock music, but also (perhaps surprisingly) a major commercial success in America long before their peers. They were also a truly singular band during their lengthy heyday; the band underwent endless lineup changes as personalities clashed and artistic visions ran amok, and yet they have always sounded like themselves and nobody else successfully has.Starting with local janitor Jon Anderson on countertenor vocals, Pete Banks on Hendrixian guitar, Tony Kaye on groovy late-Sixties B3 organ, fussily precise jazz drummer Bill Bruford keeping time, and Chris Squire playing a bass so aggressive it intimidates people into crossing to the other side of the street, Yes exploded out of London's club-gigging scene after drawing inspiration from watching a newly born King Crimson play the circuit. Their early style mixed originals -- first halting, then increasingly assured -- with spectacularly imaginative covers of everything from West Side Story to Buffalo Springfield and Simon & Garfunkel. But as Banks was jettisoned for Steve Howe, and then Tony Kaye traded in for Rick Wakeman, Yes ascended from a series of records beginning with The Yes Album and Fragile (1971) to superstardom, with all that entailed: sidelong songs, triple live albums, and extended soaks in the topographic oceans. All set to some of the most inscrutable lyrics but gorgeous music written during the decade. So turn on your lava lamp and get ready to call over valleys of endless seas as you and I climb crossing the shape of the morning -- it's time to sink into a elevated musical fantasy world created by Yes during this, the first part of their career. We take the story up through Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973); next time around, we'll get a relayer to go for the one without too much drama, but for now click play and enjoy the sound of perpetual change.

In this latest episode of the Deep Dive spinoff, Gaius is joined by JC of @mercwiththemovies of Instagram to discuss 1998's American History X. Directed by Tony Kaye and written by David McKenna, the film stars Edward Norton and Edward Furlong as two brothers from Los Angeles who are involved in the white power skinhead and neo-Nazi movements. The older brother (Norton) serves three years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, is rehabilitated during this time, and then tries to prevent his brother (Furlong) from being idocrinated further. The supporting cast includes Fairuza Balk, Stacy Keach, Elliott Gould, Avery Brooks, Ethan Suplee and Beverly D'Angelo. This week, we watch a film that tackles the subject of nazis in the US. Edward Norton's Academy Award nominated performance leaves us with mixed opinions, as well as the undercooked characters of everyone around him. Still, this film has a few very important points to get across (which feel frighteningly more relevant today than at the films release) and is worth watching for those alone. American History X (1998), directed by Tony Kaye.

NORTON WEEK continues! This is of course referring to the legendary actor Edward Norton who broke out big-time with his first ever on-screen appearance in the '96 legal thriller Primal Fear which garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Two years later in '98, he delivered two VERY memorable performances in two VERY different movies which both left their marks on any one frequenting the cinema for years to come - these two seminal films came out just about a month apart and they would make a truly BIZARRE double feature. :) Tony Kaye (mostly before Norton took over during post, as has been reported since its release) directed a very searing portrait of two brothers Daniel and Derek Vinyard who have immersed themselves in hate and bigotry. The older brother Derek is played by Norton in a performance which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor - he becomes the leader for a Neo-Nazi gang and is eventually sent to prison after committing a brutal murder in front of their home. His younger brother Daniel is played by Edward Furlong who eventually joins this gang after his brother is incarcerated. The story follows the struggles of both brothers along with their mother played by Beverly D'angelo. Other co-stars include Fairuza Balk, Elliott Gould, Stacy Keach, Ethan Suplee, Guy Torry, and Avery Brooks.WARNING: There are some racial epithets spoken by characters in this movie contained within clips from the movie included in this podcast.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
To hardcore fans of Yes, 1983's 90125 was a big departure from their progressive rock sound of the 1970s. But for the MTV generation, it was our first introduction to Yes and the immense talent within the band. Driven by new member Trevor Rabin as the guitarist, sometime lead vocalist & dominant songwriter and former lead singer Trevor Horn as producer, Yes went in a more commercial and pop direction. Anchored by the return of singer Jon Anderson, stalwart Chris Squire on bass, long time drummer Alan White and returning member Tony Kaye on keyboards, they sold more than 3 million copies in the US and were all over MTV thanks to Owner of a Lonely Heart. But what did the progressive rock Yes fans think about 90125? Was it too far a departure from their prog rock roots? Was the guitar too heavy compared to the picking of Steve Howe? UK fans didn't embrace this album like the US fans did and now Yes, led by Steve Howe who was in supergroup Asia during the recording of 90125, don't play songs from this record. Owner of a Lonely Heart hit #1 in the US but ony #28 in the UK and the rest of the videos were seen more in the US than England. We go track by track, review all the videos and talk about the politics and lineup changes that are very much a part of the legacy of Yes as 90125 turns 40 November 11, 2023. We don't know whether to dance or weep on this edition of Overlapping Dialogue, which once again continues our journey through the 90s with a pairing that would leave even the hardiest party animal crying in the club: The Last Days of Disco and American History X. But before we put on our dancing shoes, we dig into a Blue Plate Special slate celebrating the lives of Terry Funk, Bray Wyatt, and Bob Barker; mull over the status of the ongoing Hollywood strikes; and offer up some thoughts on the latest chiller from Universal Studios, The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Upon surviving the Count's subpar attempts to subdue us, we tackle two striking portraits of American whiteness while considering their traditions within the yuppie coming-of-age story and the trial-by-fire political drama respectively. In this rollercoaster of a podcast, Andrew talks about the ups and downs of his life and the ebbs and flows of the VFX industry. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Happy birthday to Jon Davison, Trevor Rabin, and Tony Kaye!
Yes keyboardist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Tony Kaye returns to the show to discuss the making of Yes's 1987 album Big Generator. The band was not in a good place when producer Trevor Horn brought them together for the 90125 album. Because that album was such a surprise hit, the team came back together for the follow up, only to have more dysfunction and infighting. Surprisingly, with hits like "Rhythm of Love" and "Love Will Find a Way", the album became another hit almost in spite of itself. Tony recounts all the ups and downs, songs he co-wrote, tension with Trevor Horn, and much more. Fascinating story for an excellent album that's sometimes overlooked by its predecessor. Enjoy! www.patreon.com/thehustlepod
Join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of when One Live Badger and the Yessongs film were recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London December 15-16, 1972! Badger was original Yes keyboardist Tony Kaye's band, and Yessongs is considered a classic in both Yes and prog rock fandom. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/yesshift/support
Love him or hate him, there are very few actors out there as consistently great as Edward Norton. From his first, explosive starring role in Primal Fear (opposite Richard Gere) through co-starring parts in The People Vs Larry Flynt and more, Norton became one of the hottest stars of the nineties in pretty short order. Within two years of his debut, he was leading American History X, in a performance that drew raves but also revealed the extent of his demand for control behind the scenes, with him infamously feuding with director Tony Kaye. Nevertheless, his career went from strength to strength for years, with iconic parts in Fight Club, The 25th Hour and more. He was even The Incredible Hulk, but he lost out on the role in The Avengers, once again, due to the difficult label. So WTF Happened to Edward Norton? We go deep into his career in this episode of WTF Happened to This Celebrity, digging into the high points of his career, as well as some of his drier periods. Through it all through, one thing is clear - Edward Norton is absolutely brilliant and really cares about his craft, and if that fact earns him the “difficult” label, so be it. We here at JoBlo are serious fans, as you'll see here!
New(ish) YES drummer Jay Schellen joins us to talk about his journey as a musician, influences, playing with Peter Banks, and his long friendship with Tony Kaye. Produced by Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius Lrheath / CC BY-SA This week Mark and I have been considering why Yes wanted Eddie Jobson. He stayed with the band for about as long as a British Prime Minister but there must have been compelling musical reasons why he was asked to join in the first place. So that's what we are beginning to explore in this episode. While Eddie isn't very well-known outside the Prog world, he certainly had the capacity to take Yes in a different and perhaps very interesting direction before he was replaced by the returning Tony Kaye. Another parallel with the UK political situation? Child prodigy to Prog legend - an amazing story. What skills did Eddie have which attracted Yes?Did he have the experience to join Yes? Take a listen to the episode and then let us know what you think below! expose.org / CC BY-SA Facebook has just changed how pages work which means that I've had to establish a new place for us to post and discuss Yes-related happenings. It's a new group entitled, rather creatively, YMP Discussion Group. For the moment it's open to anyone to join but I'll be adding rules and joining requirements when I have time. One of the advantages of the new format is that all members of the group have the same ability to post content, so it's a bit more egalitarian, or somesuch. Please do search for the group and join in. https://www.facebook.com/groups/3216603008606331/ If you haven't already done so, please sign up at tormatobook.com to the email newsletter. Tony Kaye's 1998 film, American History X is the choice for this week's movie talk episode. It's a story about 2 brothers who overcome their racial hatred that was taught to them growing up. Starring Edward Norton and Edward Furlong, it's a great movie with a lot of heavy subject matter. At the top of the show, we mention other movies that we've seen in the past couple weeks and those are: Nope, Magnolia, Interstellar, Pieces of a Woman, Tenet, Hocus Pocus and The Guilt Trip. It is again with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode about yet another fallen drummer: the amazing Mr. Alan White. The YES drummer passed away on May 26, 2022, at the age of 72 after dealing with some more recent illnesses. Kevin has a very deep connection to YES and Alan as a lifelong fan and student of their music. While not an obscure band by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers have sold 13.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US, as well as more than 30 million albums worldwide and in 1985, they won a Grammy award), Alan had a number of side projects and collaborations during his 50-year tenure with YES. Another tough loss for the classic and progressive rock community.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the LOST. We are paying tribute to another titan of rock drummers! Rest In Peace Alan. It's our 200th episode! And to celebrate, we are going to cover a group we reference frequently in other episodes - “all roads lead to Yes.” The third studio album by Yes was simply entitled The Yes Album, and it was both a critical success, and a much-needed commercial breakthrough, hitting number 40 on the US album charts. It was the first album not to contain any cover songs, and was also the first album to feature guitarist Steve Howe in the group. This iteration of Yes consisted of Jon Anderson on vocals, Chris Squire on bass and vocals, Steve Howe on guitars and vocals, Tony Kaye on keyboards, and Bill Bruford on percussion. This album would be the last with Kaye on keyboards until the 90125 album in the 80's. We're also spending some time talking about the podcast, our experiences over 200 episodes, fans from different places, and more What The Riff trivia. We hope you enjoy this milestone podcast! Yours Is No DisgraceThe opening track was written by all five members of the band. It is a song about the Vietnam War, telling the returning soldier that the war wasn't his fault, and that he had no choice but to fight.Starship TrooperRobert Heinlein's novel of the same name inspired the name of this song. The epic consists of three movements, "Life Seeker," primarily written by Jon Anderson, "Disillusion" mostly written by Squire, and "Würm," largely written by Howe. I've Seen All Good PeopleThis is another lengthy epic of a song, not uncommon for Yes with it's prog rock sensibilities. Jon Anderson and Chris Squire wrote this song and it's two movements. The first movement, "Your Move," uses chess as a metaphor for relationships, and was released as a single which became a top 40 hit. The second movement, "All Good People," would be re-incorporated into the song when played on FM rock stations at the time. It references John Lennon in several places. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the motion picture “Love Story” This romantic tragedy starred Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neil. It was released in December 1970 and was a big grossing film in February. STAFF PICKS:Temptation Eyes by The Grass RootsWayne's staff pick is a California group which charted frequently in the early 70's, including this song which went to number 15. The band originally was founded by Lou Adler and the songwriting duo of P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri. If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot Brian's staff pick is the well-known Canadian singer-songwriter. This song was inspired by Lightfoot's divorce. It has been recorded over 100 times since Lightfoot wrote it by artists like Liza Minnelli, Barbara Streisand, Glen Campbell, and Johnny Mathis.Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? by ChicagoBruce brings us the first song the band recorded together on their first album in 1969. It wasn't released as a single until late 1970 after "Make Me Smile" became a hit. This encouraged the group to go back to this song and cut it down to single length. Robert Lamm wrote and sang lead on this song, inspired by a quip he received from a Brooklyn movie theater usher. What Is Life by George HarrisonRob's finishes the staff picks with the “quiet” Beatle. It is off his triple album "All Things Must Pass," and this second single from the album went into the top 10 on the U.S. charts. Eric Clapton played on this album, and it was produced by Phil Spector. It is a love song that appears to be directed both at a woman and a deity. INSTRUMENTALTRACK:The Clap by YesThis live instrumental piece was brought to the group by Steve Howe, and appears on The Yes Album. It was written in celebration of the birth of Howe's son, Dylan.
