Benvenuti in America.

Jay Schellen has been with Yes for almost a decade though he didn't become the full-time drummer until the passing of Alan White after 50 years in the band in 2022. As Yes are taking their Fragile Tour to the UK this April (and we covered the tour on episode 263, beware of setlist spoilers), we sat down with Jay to learn more about his long career, journey to Yes and the band's future. Jay grew up in New Mexico and developed an early love of music and drumming. At a young age he moved to LA and immediately connected with Yes alum Tony Kaye who became a mentor, brother and friend to Jay. From there he worked with many bands and artists like Peter Banks (Yes), Billy Sherwood (Circa, Yes) and Geoff Downes (Buggles, Asia, Yes). Once he made his way into the orbit of Yes, it was a no brainer for him to fill in when Alan White was unavailable, to share the stage with Alan and eventually be hand-picked as his successor. We talk about Jay's amazing career, the fun of playing Fragile in its entirety, their upcoming tour of the UK & Europe this spring, new music coming from Yes this year and a return to Japan and the US. The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Billy Sherwood discusses the upcoming YES UK tour featuring the complete Fragile album. He traces his path from drummer to bassist, learning the instrument by playing along to YES records, and development in groups Lodgic and World Trade. Sherwood details his first collaboration with Chris Squire in 1989, writing ‘The More We Live – Let Go,’ and his refusal to become YES’s lead singer during the Union era. The conversation centres on Squire’s final weeks, and Squire making Sherwood promise to stay with YES and keep the band moving forward. He also reflects on his extensive tribute album work, and YES’s current recording process for albums The Quest and Mirror to the Sky. Dan and Steven discuss The Yes Album on the 55th anniversary of its release! The third Yes album overall, this was the first to feature Steve Howe as the guitarist, and also the end of their three-album run with Tony Kaye as the keyboardist, long before his eventual return. Where does this album rank for you? We'll be reading some fan comments as well!
“Has anything you've done made your life better?” Join Ian, Liam, Megs & Kev for our 317th episode as we confront anger, ideology, consequence, and redemption in Tony Kaye's incendiary and unforgettable American History X (1998). This week, we're also joined by BFF of the BFE: Hermes Auslander, and — in a huge moment for the podcast — we sit down for a special interview with director Tony Kaye himself. This one is heavy. Necessary. Complicated. This week we discuss: Edward Norton's blistering performance — charismatic, terrifying, magnetic. Is this one of the great transformations of the 1990s? The black-and-white vs colour structure — memory, myth, and moral framing. How does the visual language shape our understanding of Derek's journey? The film's central question — can hate be unlearned, and if so, what does it cost? Hermes joins us to unpack the film's cultural and political legacy — why it still resonates, and why it remains controversial. The prison sequence — brutal, pivotal, and narratively dangerous. Does the film handle trauma responsibly? We examine the fine line between depiction and endorsement — does the film risk glamorising the ideology it condemns? The ending — inevitable, devastating, and still capable of knocking the wind out of an audience. What does it ultimately say about cycles of violence? Our special interview with Tony Kaye — reflections on authorship, conflict over the final cut, working with Edward Norton, and how he views the film now, decades later. The legacy question — has the film aged well? Has it been misunderstood? Has it been weaponised? And finally, whether American History X is the Best Film Ever — or one of the most important and confronting films we've ever covered.

Neo-Nazi Family Drama: Tony Kaye's American History X Some films simply don't age well. With the passing years the problems of a narrative can become glaring. Such is the case with Tony Kaye's American History X (1998). A difficult subject that would have been better served with a revised script and a stronger director, American History X suffers from a forced and simplistic narrative. Good performances and interesting cinematography (by director Kaye) are simply not enough to overcome a story that my partner dismsses as "after-school special". Although this film is widely admired in some circles, your favorite movie podcasters are less than impressed. Take a listen as we break down the problems this film carries. It's an interesting conversation; continuing our look at a collapsing and disintegrating America. As always we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com - Many, Many Thanks. Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Wayne Hall, Ken Fuller and Jeffrey Crecelius This week, Mark and I returned to the show to talk about the Yes classic album, 90125 from 1983. It is clearly, we believe, a great album but what makes it a great Yes album? It wasn't originally going to be a Yes album at all and only became one at the last possible moment when Jon Anderson arrived on the scene. The band Cinema, consisting of Tony Kaye, Alan White, Trevor Rabin and Chris Squire had basically finished the record with Trevor Horn but, as you can read in full detail in Stephen Lambe's excellent book about the album, there were several reasons that band was ultimately replaced by the name and the aura of Yes. What do you think Mark and I came up with for our 6 reasons and would you have chosen the same features? Let us know in the show notes for this week's episode. Is this a real Yes album? What makes it great? Who makes it great? Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Wayne Hall, Ken Fuller and Jeffrey Crecelius This week, Mark and I enjoyed coming up with 6 reasons why the band's third record, The Yes Album, is a great Yes album. As I'm sure you know, this was Steve Howe's first album with Yes and also Tony Kaye's last. It is correctly viewed by many fans, critics and Steve Howe himself as the first Yes masterpiece. Clearly, we could have found dozens of reasons why this is a great Yes album but that would have left less room for you to be involved. So please do add your reasons in the comments below. What do you think we chose? Is this album the start of the progressive sound of Yes? Was the success of the album all down to the musicians? To celebrate Billy Sherwood's 60th birthday, we take a dip into the chronology of one of the bands he's been in, CIRCA: Every lineup has featured Billy Sherwood and Tony Kaye, and other faces involved over the years include Alan White, Jimmy Haun, Jay Schellen, Johnny Bruhns, Ronnie Ciago, Scott Connor, and Rick Tierney. Hear what we have to say about the history and the music.
Ronnie Ciago joined us for an interview! Drummer, drum instructor, clinician, author, vocalist, songwriter, and producer, he's worked with a LOT of people! In the Yes sphere, he has performed with Patrick Moraz at the Baked Potato and the Musicians Institute in 1996, on a cover of "Los Endos" from 1998's The Fox Lies Down on Broadway - A Tribute to Genesis, and the track "One Day in June" which ended up on Moraz's solo album Change of Space. And in 2011, he was part of a lineup of Circa: that also included Johnny Bruhns, Tony Kaye, and Billy Sherwood. Beyond all that, he has also worked with the likes of Jeff Berlin, Robert Downey Jr., Mick Taylor, Bill Ward, and more! During the interview, there were internet issues, but we were able to get him back on as the broadcast progressed.

We also dive into his deep love for cinema and discuss scenes from the Brazilian film CITY OF GOD and Tony Kaye's AMERICAN HISTORY X. Hosted by Zef Cota
Guitarist Johnny Bruhns joins us for an interview! We'll be talking a bit about a recent album he played on titled Tempus Sidereum II, as well as his history with Yes music and Yes members! He used to be in Yes tribute band Roundabout with Jon Davison, rehearsed with Yes in 2008 as they waited for Steve Howe to join the In The Present Tour rehearsals, played with Tony Kaye and Billy Sherwood in both Yoso and Circa, was chosen by Chris Squire to play guitars when Chris was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at Bass Player Live in 2012, played with Awaken: The Yes Music Experience, and has played with Yes tribute band Total Mass Retain. Join us as Johnny gives an update on how he's been doing, and sheds light on the future of TMR.

Face the Music: An Electric Light Orchestra Song-By-Song Podcast
Yes had achieved chart success in the U.S. beginning with their third LP, The Yes Album. Original keyboard player Tony Kaye would be let go after that album, with former Strawbs keyboard player Rick Wakeman joining in mid-1971. Both the albums Fragile and Close to the Edge would be considered both fan and critical favorites, with a successful tour a triple-album live album and concert film in Yessongs. However, during that tour drummer Bill Bruford left for King Crimson and was replaced by Alan White, and Jon Anderson and Steve Howe began working on new music that would become one of the band's most controversial albums - Tales from Topographic Oceans.
In Production: Tales from Topographic OceansListening guide YesBooks.com Produced by Wayne Hall, Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller We spoke to publisher and Yes author Stephen Lambe this week about his (relatively) recent book Rock Classics - Yes 90125. The book delves deeply into the story of the 1983 album that became Yes' best selling record of all time and saw the rebirth of the band after the events following the Drama tour. It could all have been very different if Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, Tony Kaye and Alan White had stuck with their original plans of creating a much more stadium rock orientated band called Cinema. Stephen Lambe helps us to discover the unsung hero of the album's creation and the man who was responsible for bringing Jon Anderson back into the fold. Listen out for that later on in the episode and get hold of a copy of Stephen's book at Burning Shed or your favourite retailer. Who is the unsung hero of 90125? Did the members of Cinema want it to morph into Yes? What are the keys to the longevity of the album? Let us know if you agree with us! There are only 100 of these packs available, so buy yours now! The gang bites the curb this week as they review the hard-to-watch but meaningful film, American History X. Anyone who has seen this movie can usually pick out 2-3 very hard to watch scenes that are burned into their heads forever. It's not for the faint of heart, but for a purpose. One of the more impactful films, in the likes of Come and See, or Requiem For a Dream, where many times the viewer is a different person after watching the film. Hey there!
Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Brad Birzer. Brad is the Russell Amos Kirk Chair in American Studies and Professor of History at Hillsdale College. He is also the co-founder of and Senior Contributor at The Imaginative Conservative, and the author of a number of books, including Neil Peart: Cultural (Re)Percussions. Find him online at bradbirzer.com or @bradleybirzer on Twitter.Brad's Music Pick: YesTell the moon dog, tell the march hare! We take you close to the edge of the south side of the sky this week as we discuss the early adventures of Britain's answer to all the questions raised by hippies during the Seventies, the New Age of Atlantic: Yes. Yes were one of the pillars of British progressive rock music, but also (perhaps surprisingly) a major commercial success in America long before their peers. They were also a truly singular band during their lengthy heyday; the band underwent endless lineup changes as personalities clashed and artistic visions ran amok, and yet they have always sounded like themselves and nobody else successfully has.Starting with local janitor Jon Anderson on countertenor vocals, Pete Banks on Hendrixian guitar, Tony Kaye on groovy late-Sixties B3 organ, fussily precise jazz drummer Bill Bruford keeping time, and Chris Squire playing a bass so aggressive it intimidates people into crossing to the other side of the street, Yes exploded out of London's club-gigging scene after drawing inspiration from watching a newly born King Crimson play the circuit. Their early style mixed originals -- first halting, then increasingly assured -- with spectacularly imaginative covers of everything from West Side Story to Buffalo Springfield and Simon & Garfunkel. But as Banks was jettisoned for Steve Howe, and then Tony Kaye traded in for Rick Wakeman, Yes ascended from a series of records beginning with The Yes Album and Fragile (1971) to superstardom, with all that entailed: sidelong songs, triple live albums, and extended soaks in the topographic oceans. All set to some of the most inscrutable lyrics but gorgeous music written during the decade. So turn on your lava lamp and get ready to call over valleys of endless seas as you and I climb crossing the shape of the morning -- it's time to sink into a elevated musical fantasy world created by Yes during this, the first part of their career. We take the story up through Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973); next time around, we'll get a relayer to go for the one without too much drama, but for now click play and enjoy the sound of perpetual change.
Join us as we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Yes album TALK! This was the last album to feature the lineup of Jon Anderson, Tony Kaye, Trevor Rabin, Chris Squire, and Alan White. In this latest episode of the Deep Dive spinoff, Gaius is joined by JC of @mercwiththemovies of Instagram to discuss 1998's American History X. Directed by Tony Kaye and written by David McKenna, the film stars Edward Norton and Edward Furlong as two brothers from Los Angeles who are involved in the white power skinhead and neo-Nazi movements. The older brother (Norton) serves three years in prison for voluntary manslaughter, is rehabilitated during this time, and then tries to prevent his brother (Furlong) from being idocrinated further. The supporting cast includes Fairuza Balk, Stacy Keach, Elliott Gould, Avery Brooks, Ethan Suplee and Beverly D'Angelo. This week, we watch a film that tackles the subject of nazis in the US. Edward Norton's Academy Award nominated performance leaves us with mixed opinions, as well as the undercooked characters of everyone around him. Still, this film has a few very important points to get across (which feel frighteningly more relevant today than at the films release) and is worth watching for those alone. American History X (1998), directed by Tony Kaye.
NORTON WEEK continues! This is of course referring to the legendary actor Edward Norton who broke out big-time with his first ever on-screen appearance in the '96 legal thriller Primal Fear which garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Two years later in '98, he delivered two VERY memorable performances in two VERY different movies which both left their marks on any one frequenting the cinema for years to come - these two seminal films came out just about a month apart and they would make a truly BIZARRE double feature. :) Tony Kaye (mostly before Norton took over during post, as has been reported since its release) directed a very searing portrait of two brothers Daniel and Derek Vinyard who have immersed themselves in hate and bigotry. The older brother Derek is played by Norton in a performance which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor - he becomes the leader for a Neo-Nazi gang and is eventually sent to prison after committing a brutal murder in front of their home. His younger brother Daniel is played by Edward Furlong who eventually joins this gang after his brother is incarcerated. The story follows the struggles of both brothers along with their mother played by Beverly D'angelo. Other co-stars include Fairuza Balk, Elliott Gould, Stacy Keach, Ethan Suplee, Guy Torry, and Avery Brooks.WARNING: There are some racial epithets spoken by characters in this movie contained within clips from the movie included in this podcast.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
To hardcore fans of Yes, 1983's 90125 was a big departure from their progressive rock sound of the 1970s. But for the MTV generation, it was our first introduction to Yes and the immense talent within the band. Driven by new member Trevor Rabin as the guitarist, sometime lead vocalist & dominant songwriter and former lead singer Trevor Horn as producer, Yes went in a more commercial and pop direction. Anchored by the return of singer Jon Anderson, stalwart Chris Squire on bass, long time drummer Alan White and returning member Tony Kaye on keyboards, they sold more than 3 million copies in the US and were all over MTV thanks to Owner of a Lonely Heart. But what did the progressive rock Yes fans think about 90125? Was it too far a departure from their prog rock roots? Was the guitar too heavy compared to the picking of Steve Howe? UK fans didn't embrace this album like the US fans did and now Yes, led by Steve Howe who was in supergroup Asia during the recording of 90125, don't play songs from this record. Owner of a Lonely Heart hit #1 in the US but ony #28 in the UK and the rest of the videos were seen more in the US than England. We go track by track, review all the videos and talk about the politics and lineup changes that are very much a part of the legacy of Yes as 90125 turns 40 November 11, 2023. Yes keyboardist and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Tony Kaye returns to the show to discuss the making of Yes's 1987 album Big Generator. The band was not in a good place when producer Trevor Horn brought them together for the 90125 album. Because that album was such a surprise hit, the team came back together for the follow up, only to have more dysfunction and infighting. Surprisingly, with hits like "Rhythm of Love" and "Love Will Find a Way", the album became another hit almost in spite of itself. Tony recounts all the ups and downs, songs he co-wrote, tension with Trevor Horn, and much more. Fascinating story for an excellent album that's sometimes overlooked by its predecessor.
